(More customer reviews)My mom loves her flat model, and so I asked for a Foodsaver for Christmas. My folks got me this upright model, which I only opened up to use for the first time today. I am familiar with the Foodsaver, I have used my mom's, and I am the type of person who pores through the user manuals when setting up a new appliance. First of all, there was no user manual really - just a quickstart guide. It is inadequate, especially in terms of troubleshooting. Like the other reviewers here before me, I found inserting the bags to be a huge hassle - it is hard to get the plastic to trip the plastic "baffles" inside to tell the machine to start vacuuming and/or sealing, and once the process starts I found that the "seal" button would often start flashing, indicating an error.
So I started trying different things... pressing "seal" when the machine indicated the vacuum was at maximum, instead of letting the appliance decide when to seal the bag (the guide provided in fact invites you to do this if you wish), trying to reset the appliance by either going power on/off or unplugging the thing entirely, seeing what effect using or not using "cancel" has when the seal light started blinking its error message.
Still frustrating and still took me way too long to accomplish what I wanted to, so I went to the Internet to see if there was a more complete guide. No dice. So I called customer support at the number provided on the machine, finally getting someone after 15 minutes of waiting. *NOT* worth the wait! Sherice (?) kept stopping me, and kept seeming to be confused about what I was having trouble with, even after I could see that she needed me to slowly tell her step by step what I had tried so that she could respond step by step.
We didn't get far before she stopped the whole discussion (she really didn't seem to want or be able to listen to me) to give me a very condescending speech about inconsistent usage and how I would be unable to successfully use the appliance and she would be unable to help me figure out what was going wrong until I made consistent use of the machine. I was very taken aback, as was my husband (I had the phone on speaker).
Okay - different tactic and different topic. I mentioned that I thought it would be useful if I could have access to a more thorough user manual rather than just a quickstart guide, and that I had tried to find something on the Internet (at the Foodsaver website and generally) before I called in. Apparently this was the cue for some more warm-voiced, almost baby-talking condescension. Again. "You don't *need* a user manual, that's what you have the phone number for!" ...along with an unstoppable explanation (I tried to stop her!) of where the number was - ridiculous to be telling me when I had called it to talk to someone!
At this point I couldn't believe that I had not succumbed even to raising my voice - exasperating! I had to pause to take this in, and then I told her that it was unlikely that I would be calling in as it took 15 minutes of waiting just to connect with a live person this time around - that the wait time confirmed for me that I would rather have a more detailed manual. She cranked up the vocal sunshine to assure me that I wouldn't *have* to call very often, implying that Foodsaver was such a good product and the customer service phoneline was so helpful that I would swiftly get all the help I needed and then never be at loose ends with my appliance again. All this while being *unable (unwilling?) to help me*.
Some dead air space ensued while I shook my head to uncross my eyes and my husband scooped his jaw up off the floor. Stopping her before she could launch into another odd little speech, I told her that I had found the conversation very frustrating and so I was going to end the call right there.
Ow.
