Early in 2010 I wanted the best electric knife sharpener I could find for home use. I had tried several different manual systems, including Lansky and Warthog, but although they did a fine job, they were labor intensive and time consuming. I decided to look for an electric/manual sharpener that would work much faster and keep all my knives razor sharp without the time & effort an all-manual system requires. After extensive online research, I decided on Smith's Diamond Edge Pro Electric Knife & Scissors Sharpener, Model #50023.
Smith's (established 1886) claims that this is the only non-commercial grade knife sharpener with interlocking diamond wheels that is available for home use. I can't confirm this, but I can tell you that it does an excellent and really fast job sharpening knives razor sharp for just a little over $100. (and free shipping from Amazon). There are two electric-powered sharpening wheels that sharpen both sides of the blade at the same time, and also two mannual slots, one with carbide wheels (for rough blade shaping) and a ceramic slot for fine finishing. The powered grinding wheels have two speeds, low and high. There is also a pull-out cylinder for doing scissors manually. The machine is compact (approximately 8" long x 6" deep x 5" high) and lightweight- about 4 pounds. It is very stable when sharpening, with it's rubber feet and low profile. The housing seems to be heavy-duty plastic with chrome accents. The box says it also sharpens serrated knives, but I haven't tested this function yet. It has a 3 year limited warranty.
It was the industrial diamond surfaced grinding wheels that captured my interest originally, and in my opinion they are what puts this sharpener in a league above the others. An excellent in-depth review on this feature can be found online, by Steven Dick in Tactical Knives magazine. In it, he says that the new model of this machine [#50023] has been significantly improved over the old model [#6001]. The review states that the main improvement on the new model was adding 12 diamond grinding surfaces to the 2 grinding wheels on the new model, as opposed to 4 diamond surfaces on the previous model.
IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. There are other vendors on Amazon that actually sell the older model [#6001] for more money than the newer one and are charging shipping as well. The older model looks similar, so carefully check the model numbers and be sure you get the newer version [#50023]. 2. This sharpener produces a hollow ground, thinner, extra sharp blade, as opposed to a more utilitarian V-shaped grind, which lasts longer for working purposes. If you want the longer lasting, but less sharp V-shaped grind, then this is not the sharpener for you.

Smith's is proud to introduce the Diamond Edge Pro Electric/Manual Knife and Scissors Sharpener with Edge Pro technology featuring interlocking diamond wheels in combination with manual sharpening elements. It provides a broad capability to sharpen multiple blade types and edge conditions. This one product allows you to easily sharpen extremely dull blades, maintain razor sharp edges on both straight and serrated blades & sharpen common household scissors. Edge Pro Technology features interlocking diamond wheels which delivers fast and precise sharpening of both sides of your blade at the same time. This reduces the amount of time needed to sharpen your knife, leaves no micro-burrs on the edge and assures equal treatment of both sides of the knife edge. Currently Interlocking Diamond Wheels can only be found on commercial grade sharpening machines. The Diamond Edge Pro will sharpen straight edge knives of alloy, carbon, or stainless steel in the electric sharpening slot. It is designed to sharpen your finest cutlery and other common kitchen knives. Do not attempt to sharpen any blade that does not fit freely into the electric sharpening slot. Diamond Break-In Period: The initial aggressive cutting speed of the interlock diamond wheels will slow with use and at the same time the abrasive finish will improve. Do not be confused by this break-in process because it is normal and should be expected. The diamond wheels are 'breaking in,' NOT wearing out. It produces a 'hollow ground' edge that is a time-tested and preferred -edge configuration because it offers the perfect compromise between sharpness, edge performance, and edge retentions. Features: Adjust 2 Speed allows you to control the sharpening process and ensures professional results every time. Low speed for knives that need just a quick touch up and high speed for knives that require more metal removal to resto
