FINALLY, a trimmer that I'm very happy with ... my Tanaka 240PF!
I tried several different brand trimmers, Sears Craftsman professional model ($300), a Ryobi from Home Depot ($167), Echo, Stihl, and a few others. I usually buy Husqvarna products, but not this time.
This Tanaka trimmer is amazing. It trims weeds as if they are made of butter with it barely running above idle! So far, I haven't needed to run it past 50% throttle! This is also the quietest trimmer I've ever used. You can actually carry on a normal conversation without raising your voice, while it's running. (if needed)
The bumper feed works so silky smooth that I wasn't sure it was feeding string at all - but it was! Because I never saw the string get shorter, I assumed there was a problem. No problem at all! I had bought the "no brainer" optional spooler, but I see no reason to use it because the standard spool is flawless.
I suppose that after experiencing past trimmers, including all the headaches, I wasn't used to a trimmer that actually works properly. This Tanaka is certainly in a different class, a commercial grade without a doubt.
Before I bought this Tanaka, I did read the other reviews regarding a few problems and complaints of it being made in China instead of Japan. Personally, I'm glad I ignored these comments.
The only criticism I have is - the gas cap leaks slowly if the trimmer is not level, whether you stand/hang it vertically or if you lay it down. It simply cannot be set down or hung tilted to one side. I can deal with this minor oversight.
As a summary and in my opinion, this trimmer is the best. I felt obligated to leave a review because there were only 2 reviews present. I hope mine has helped you make a decision.
Cheers, Jeff
ADDED INFO regarding the "No-Brainer" quick spool:
-------------------------------------------------
To be brief, the No-Brainer has lousy instructions which would baffle anyone of higher intelligence. It skips what to do if the included arbors do not fit the shaft of your trimmer.
For my Tanaka trimmer:
1. remove the black trimmer spool and set it aside. Examine closely what is now exposed. Do you see the metal threads and a thin nut?
2. remove these threads by using a wrench on that thin nut. Unscrew this in the same direction as the black spool. Set it aside. Now you can see an even smaller threaded shaft! These threads are what fits the No-Brainer spool, at least in my case.
3. BUT hold on a sec ... remove that brass washer and trade it for the included THICKER washer in the package. This washer protects the spine grooves of the shaft from getting damaged.
4. now you're ready to install the No-Brainer on the shaft by spinning it on tightly. You're all done .. enjoy!
NOTE: I didn't need the extra arbors. The one already mounted within the No-Brainer fit my Tanaka trimmer perfectly.
