Alessi 9095/3 B La Cupola Espresso Coffee Maker 3 Cups Review

We bought this coffee pot (correctly called a Moka) in Sicily 9 years ago. Since then we have used it regularly to make what we think is great coffee (although I'm no expert). The 3 cup size is perfect for a large 12oz. cappuccino or for two 8oz cappuccinos (yes - I know the maths don't add up!). Once made the mistake of putting part of the pot in the dishwasher which dulled the aluminium. Since then we've followed the instructions and only rinsed the pot in warm water, leaving the coffee residue to coat the insides of the pot. The rubber seal(gasket) needs to be changed every year or so. Try to buy a few when you get buy the pot then your retailer should be able to give you the correct ones, otherwise look on-line for Bialetti replacement gaskets - they sell a 3 pack with a new aluminium sieve.

La Cupola, presented four years after La Conica, is the latest development in Aldo Rossi's on-going research into coffee makers. Cast from aluminum and sold at around a third of the price of its older sister (which is made from stainless steel and has a thick copper base), it is Rossi's answer to the classic espresso coffee maker, and his attempt to fulfill his dream of a "coffee maker for all".

I wanted to disagree with the other reviewer's opinion and say that this is an excellent stovetop espresso maker, especially for a larger size. Strong, easy to pour, and good looking. It is important not to cook it too hot so that the entire batch will percolate correctly.

Just bought this and it works great. You put water in the bottom, add coffee to the filter/funnel. As steam builds, it forces water up through the funnel and then through the coffee and you get this lovely espresso. My only warning (and this applies to all brands of stovetop espresso makers of this type) is that you have to stay close by as the coffee brews. Once all the water has boiled off, you have to turn off the heat or move the pot off or else you will have a nasty mess.

12 years ago I went to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. It lasts two weeks...way too long when your "job" is basically to attend every party thrown. Somewhere in the middle of it I met a gorgeous German journalist. We ended up in London afterwards for a few more sodden days. When she came to visit me in L.A., she brought this Alessi 6-cup Stainless Steel Espresso maker as a gift. The relationship didn't last but ever since then, from L.A. to New York and back to L.A.; on open fires while camping; on snowboarding trips and aboard sailboats, I have made two pots of coffee a day and can't imagine life without it. Somewhere around 4 or 5 thousand pots and 7 years later, the lower half developed hairline cracks that allowed the water to leak out. Alessi replaced it for free.
The coffee is great but if you are looking for thick, strong espresso with the foam on top, this isn't it. It's more like strong coffee, which is perfect because the "6 cups" of espresso fills up one large mug and that's what I drink. It tastes delicious but is very much its own thing. Guests love it.
I like well-made machines and this is a coffee machine. The handle snaps down with an incredibly satisfying feel. The metal is thick and lustrous. Here's something great: because the whole pot heats up on the stove, the coffee inside will stay hot for an hour. Make sure you use a pot holder to grab the handle, though.
Here's one thing I can guarantee: from time to time you will forget the pot cooking on the stove until the smell of scorched coffee grounds reminds you. You will rush back to find the lower half blue with heat and bone dry, with the coffee burnt and boiling in the top half. At this point, don't do anything. Leave the whole thing on the stove to cool and take it apart only then. Pouring out the coffee and running cold water on it will cause the metal to weaken and leave you with the cracks mentioned above. Metal doesn't mind heat and would rather cool gradually.
Over time, the lower half will lose its brand new look but that's true of all of us I suppose. It you don't use abrasives on the top half it will remain new-looking forever. After a few years you may want to replace the rubber ring that seals the two halves.
Buy this espresso maker. You will not be sorry. Or buy it for a friend whom you want to remember you every time he makes coffee...for years.

Bene Casa's 6-cup "cafetera," as they call these units in Spain, is an excellent substitute for the WAY over-priced Bialetti. Clearly some folks like the "charm" of being able to say that their "cafetera" was manufacture in Italy instead of China (wher Bene Casa's unit is made), but if the quality of the unit is equivalent, is it worth paying $20 extra for the name? I do not. This is all aluminum, just like Bialetti's, and all three disassembling parts join flawlessly. The espresso made is the same as that by Bialetti's and other "cafeteras." So, unless you have money to burn, buy the Bene Casa brand and you'll enjoy a quality unit that produces the same excellent espresso. Now, if I can only find a 12-cup unit by Bene Casa...

These are original Bialetti parts and work perfectly. I just couldn't tell from the photo how many gaskets were included, so I bought two packages. It turns out that each package contains one metal screeen and 3 gaskets. Since the gasket is the only thing that has ever worn out, and has usually lasted me a year or more of daily use before disintegrating (or liquifying in one case), I now have a six year supply of gaskets and 2 extra screens. I hope I still enjoy capuccino as much in six years as I do now!

Bialetti Cuor Di Moka, 3 Cup Polished Aluminum Review

Bialetti Cuor Di Moka, 3 Cup Polished Aluminum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this little pot to make convenient and decent homemade espresso. Yes, I know that it's only steam pressure, so it's not *really* espresso. But, used correctly this little pot does a great job. It produces a dark, concentrated double shot of espresso that satisfies. I generally pour this into a mug and add hot water to make a cafe americano (yeah, I'm not a purist).
But ... and this is a big but, using it correctly is not intuitively obvious. I searched the instructions, the internet and the Bialetti website in vain for guidance because I had problems. That is why I'm posting this review and writing up a set of instructions for using the Cuor Di Moka.
How the Pot Works: Bialetti built this pot with a valve in the stem that cuts off the flow of water from the bottom to the top at a certain point. The goal, as they state it, is to provide just the "heart" of the coffee. It's the certain point that creates the problem.
The Problem: Often I was only getting a tiny portion of coffee--something like half a shot of espresso, instead of the two shots that this little pot should produce. I cleaned the pot, thinking that it was clogged, but got no reliable improvement. I did, at one point, consider setting this pot aside as another mistaken purchase. But, further experimentation brought me to ...
The Solution: What I finally realized is that the certain point where the shut-off valve operates is based on temperature. A couple minor adjustments in how I set up and used the pot now allow me to consistently produce a full double shot of strong espresso. Heat is what causes the valve to shut off the flow of steam through the ground coffee into the receiving chamber. 1) Fill the bottom chamber with very cold water. It doesn't matter how full the bottom is because only half the water gets pushed to the top in any case. 2) Wash out the receiving chamber, and the stem inside which contains the shut-off valve, with very cold water as well. This is the real key. Starting with the valve very cold permits the largest volume of water to pass into the receiving chamber. 3) Use a moderately low temperature on the stove top. I use 4 (out of 10) on my stove. It generally takes 7-9 minutes for the Cuor Di Moka to finish at this setting.
Cold water. Cold stem valve. Low heat. By following these three steps I'm very happy with the coffee produced by this machine.

Cuor di Moka is an innovative stove top espresso maker developed by Italy's premier coffee companies- Bialetti and Illy.Cuor di Moka has an original design and cutting edge technology. An innovative and patented pouring system called "controlled pouring" extracts only the best optimal coffee flavour. The design features a heart- that represents the 'cuor' or 'heart' of the coffee that is produced by the machine.Compared with a traditional moka of the same size, the new Cuor di Moka by Bialetti makes slightly less coffee because not all the water contained in the lower chamber passes through the filter, but only the amount necessary for extracting the best coffee blend, without any extraction dregs. The result is a coffee with excellent organic and flavorful characteristics.

Vev Vigano 8196 Kontessa Inox 6-cup Coffee Pot Review

Vev Vigano 8196 Kontessa Inox 6-cup Coffee Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using a french press for years and love coffee this way, but I used to have an aluminum "moka" pot from Italy that made excellent coffee without the breakable glass carafes. I didn't want the aluminum so I looked at all the Vev Vigano stainless pots. After studying all the reviews on Amazon, I chose the Kontessa 6-cup for the styling and seemingly good quality (and, yes, it makes 6 SMALL espresso cups of coffee -don't expect American sizing here. but, n.b. you can get 3 full cups of American style coffee from a 6-cup moka by making "Americanos" -half water half espresso).
The coffee pot is beautiful and looks great sitting out on my stove. I use it daily, and it makes delicious coffee. You can avoid the problems with the "seal" or steaming that one reviewer wrote about by making sure there are no grounds on the "lip" or gasket before screwing the top to the base.
After a year of daily use, I have not had any problems with corrosion of the interior lining as one reviewer wrote about -perhaps there is an issue with their water quality?
My big complaint is that after a year of daily gentle use the lid hinge broke (actually, the welding broke, the hinge & "bolt" are still intact -think eyeglasses). I purchased the espresso pot from Espresso Zone, and since I moved since purchasing the coffee pot I couldn't find the warranty information.
Well it took Espresso Zone a week (too long) to tell me that Vev Vigano doesn't warranty these pots and that they had no repair locations in the US. Since Espresso Zone doesn't guarantee their products longer than 30 days, I was out of luck. I'll stick to Amazon from now on.
I did read another reviewer here say that they've had their Vev Vigano repaired so I'm not sure what the deal is -is there a repair service or not? Regardless, one year is not acceptable for such an expensive moka pot. Apart from the hinge becoming unwelded, it appears that this unit would otherwise last a long time. If I could find a repair shop, I would rate this 4 stars. 5 stars if it didn't break in the first place.
If anyone has the address of a vigano repair shop in the states -please post it!

First off, I usually don't go out of my way to review a product unless I am very happy with the item. This is a very nice moka pot! After looking at other models I knew I wanted stainless steel and one with a larger cup capacity. The Liberta is made very well with high quality materials. It also comes with an extra gasket and a reducer filter so you can make half of a pot. Water chamber is coated with non-stainless tint, although the Vivano customer service is very secretive about it. Immediately it developed rust spots just after running water through the pot. Its very peculiar that stainless steel would be coated with staining tint--defeats the whole purpose. I sent it back without ever brewing coffee in it out of fear of contamination. Customer service not very informative or responsive about the matter. Vivano other pots are like that too--stay away until they even are aware of the problem.

Bialetti Musa 4-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker
Average Reviews:

We having been using the Italian made Bialetti aluminum espresso maker for about 4 years and really like it. However, the aluminum Bialetti can't be used in a dishwasher (it oxidizes and turns dark.) We thought that a stainless model would be more convenient to clean. However, this Indian made coffee maker isn't made to as exacting a standard as the aluminum Italian one. The top and bottom pieces don't screw together as well and is very hard to prevent the steam from leaking.
Two year update: This model got better with age. The pieces screw together better and doesn't leak anymore. In addition, slightly looser fit of the rubber gasket made it easier to remove and clean. It cleans nicely in a dishwasher and is very durable. Now will give it a four star.

With this sleek little pot, you can make espresso on the stovetop like they do in Italy. The Venus Bialetti is easy to use-- if you use a countertop drip maker, you can handle this. It takes only 3 minutes on my stove to make 4 shots.
I have been using this daily for a little over a year, usually one pot for myself and one for my husband and the gasket is still doing well.
It does not make the same quality as an industrial espresso maker but it certainly out performs the various countertop models I've tried. I would even go out on a limb and say that a countertop model that outperforms this would be in a price range of roughly 10 times this cost. Those take up a lot more real estate in small kitchen too.
The Bialetti Venus is also adorable. Not that I want to marry my espresso pot or anything. . .
