DISCLAIMERS
There is no way that buying a $875 - $4000 machine was in the cards for me, so I performed no investigation on alkaline water. Maybe alkaline water works; maybe it doesn't. I was interested in Hayashi's claim that it was the hydrogen dissolved in the water that has a therapeutic effect rather than in the water's alkalinity or Oxidation/Reduction Potential.

What follows is not to be construed as medical advice.
While I have attempted to perform a sanity check for myself, this sanity check was to informal personal standards which may not satisfy the standards of a given reader.
REASONS NOT TO BUY THE HYDROGEN STICK
Alkaline Tap Water. The hydrogen stick relies on a chemical reaction between water and metallic magnesium: Mg + 2H2O -> Mg (OH)2 + H2. This reaction proceeds faster in an acidic environment and slower in an alkaline environment. Therefore, if your tap water is exceptionally alkaline, the hydrogen stick is probably not for you, unless you are willing to use bottled water instead of tap water. Or instead of using bottled water, maybe you could acidify the tap water with vinegar, bringing it to a more neutral pH - it's worth a try. On the other hand, if your water is really acidic, my guess is that the hydrogen stick will produce bubbles like crazy but probably won't last very long. Any water with a fairly neutral pH - say 7.0 or 8.0 - should be fine. 636cathleen (creator of the "Don't Buy the Hydrogen Stick" YouTube videos) has tap water that is extremely alkaline - pH 10.1, so her poor results with the Hydrogen Stick are understandable and predictable.
Drinking Habits - You Like to Drink Water Constantly Throughout the Day. The instructions for the stick emphasize that once you get it wet, you need to keep it wet. If you are the kind of person who sucks water all day long from a bottle, keeping the stick wet can be a problem - especially if you plan to use multiple sticks in a single bottle. Sergey Manukyan's review mentions the difficulty of maintaining the stick, and he makes an excellent point. I am not a big water drinker, so this problem didn't affect me, but if you are someone who wants to drink hydrogen-rich water all day long, keeping your bottle topped off will be a pain. Personally, I chug a bunch of hydrogen-rich water in the morning, top off, and then chug a bunch more at night and top off again. If you sip water all day long, it would be a hassle to keep the bottle topped off - you'd need a source of water and a way to top off the hydrogen water bottle without spilling the water and making a mess. If you happen to be near a drinking fountain or a Sparkletts water dispenser this is probably not a big deal, but if you don't have ready access to a water supply it's something to seriously consider before buying the stick.
HOW I HEARD ABOUT THE HYDROGEN STICK
I first stumbled across Hydrogen Sticks on eBay, when I searched for "alkaline water ionizer" and strange entries about plastic sticks and other entries about assorted rocks encased in stainless steel sticks popped up. I read an Ebay description for the Hydrogen-Rich Water Stick (Water Ionizer Outperforms Machines alkaline ORP pH) with a great deal of skepticism, but decided to do a little research before discounting it - primarily due to the huge difference between the cost of the Hydrogen-Rich Water Stick and that of a typical water-ionizer machine ($75 vs. $875-4000).
WHY I DECIDED TO BUY A HYDROGEN STICK
It Really Does Put Hydrogen Gas Into Water. The presence of molecular hydrogen gas in water treated with a Hydrogen Stick was confirmed by a scientific study: "The hydrogen concentration in a water bottle was maintained between 0.55 and 0.65 mM over an 8 week period." (H2 exists as a gas at Standard Temperature and Pressure.) However, the study used 2 sticks per 500ml - four times the concentration of the 1 stick per 1L that I use.
Antioxidant Activity. Molecular hydrogen, H2, specifically targets the hydroxyl radical - a Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that is one of the most plentiful and virulent species, and which evidently does not play a part in cell regulation ("Hydrogen acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals").
Health Benefits. According to a scientific study, drinking hydrogen rich water for 8 weeks resulted in a 39% increase in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and a 43% decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in urine (TBARS are a measure of the oxidized and damaged fats in your body). Additionally, an 8% increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and a 13% decrease in total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol was observed from baseline to week 4. If you want to boost your SOD levels by 40%, $75 for a 6-month supply is a bargain compared to the cost of supplements that would accomplish the same thing over the same time period. And improving your HDL/LDL ratio by 13% by merely drinking water every day seems like an easy way to improve that statistic (though I am no fan of the cholesterol scam, and once spent $350 of my own money just to get my doctor off of my back about my cholesterol levels).
Safety. "The portable magnesium stick was a safe, easy and effective method of delivering hydrogen rich water for daily consumption by participants in the study."
I Got to Perform a Personal Experiment Where a Placebo Effect Was Unlikely to Occur. I found a Hayashi article where he describes what he means by "hydrogen rich water" ("Japanese Cardiologist Dr. Hayashi's Two types of Water"). Oddly enough, this article was featured on a "Kangen Water" site, yet in it Hayashi claims that it is hydrogen-rich water that really matters, rather than pH or ORP. In his article, Hayashi says, "A week or two after people begin to use Hydrogen Rich Water, they notice that their feces have literally changed in comparison to when they were using tap water (hydrogen poor water). That is, the "blackish brown, bad-smelling, hard, heavy feces" of the tap water days changed to "light brown, soft, light feces without a strong bad odor" similar to the bowel movements that appear in the diapers of a breastfed baby...We adults tend to think that it is natural for adults feces to have a bad smell, but this is actually a great misconception...Every breastfeeding mother knows from her experience that when her baby has light- colored soft stool with very little bad odor, she can be sure that the baby is healthy, drinking plenty of breast milk, and growing well. On the other hand, when the baby has "blackish, bad-smelling, hard stool," the baby is cranky and feverish, and sometimes vomits up milk. The condition of producing offensive feces is generally called abnormal fermentation of gastrointestinal tract, which indicates the opposite of normal fermentation, but simply put, it is "decay." In other words, if the food we take in by mouth has a rotten smell (bad smell) when it is excreted from the anus, this means abnormal fermentation has taken place." Softer, less smelly stools can be easily verified, and it would be difficult to trick the body into making them.
PERSONAL SUPERSTITIONS THAT I OBSERVE WITH THE HYDROGEN STICK
Don't clean it any more than you have to. If you put it in an acid such as vinegar, the magnesium will be consumed at an accelerated rate, and your stick will not last as long. Obviously, if your stick is dead and doesn't produce bubbles any more, it's time to stick it into some vinegar that's been diluted 4:1 and hope that it comes back to life. Or if it starts looking green and moldy, by all means clean it - use common sense.
I use an old Schweppes Tonic Water bottle, because the closure seems secure. It seems to work fine, and the price was right.
Once or twice a week, I dump out all of the water, rinse off the stick, and vigorously rinse out the bottle. Just in case something has started to putrefy or I have some old germs in the water.
I originally used tap water, but I like the taste of Arrowhead bottled water better. This is all personal taste, and I doubt that it makes any difference on any therapeutic effects that the water might have.
I try not to have too big or too tiny of an air bubble inside of the bottle. If the bubble is too small, there doesn't seem to be as much hydrogen gas in the water (but this could be a hallucination - please reread the title of this section!). If the bubble is too large, I'm afraid that I'm producing a bunch of hydrogen gas that will be instantly blown off as soon as I open the bottle. I generally leave a bubble that includes the neck of the bottle and maybe 1/3" - 1/2" of the top of the shoulder.
I top off the bottle as soon as I take a drink. I try to pour the water into my open mouth rather than sucking on the bottle, to avoid backwashing and potentially contaminating the bottle with food particulates. I attempt to pour the refill water down the side of the bottle rather than splashing it into the center, because I have a superstition that the more the water is agitated, the more hydrogen gas will be dislodged and escape out of the open mouth of the bottle. Before I started drinking alkaline water I was bloated, tired and had an array of other health issues like IBS. Chanson VS-70 Alkaline Water Ionizer Review

(More customer reviews)I found out about Chanson Alkalinizer products in late 2008 while searching all over trying to find a manufacture whose products not only have reliable backgrounds, positive customer reviews but solid sales records, besides the indispensible science behind their products. I didn't like what I found out there, mostly without an available manual to check out. After reading around on Chanson's U.S. site as well as its Taiwan site, I decided to give Chanson a try, since they are a Taiwan company that is selling ionizers all over Taiwan with a seeming monopolizing popularity, and have also sales department conveniently in Shanghai, China.
I have two residences, one in the U.S., the other in China. I initially wanted this installed for my house here (hopefully this summer I will find time and a good plumber to get this done, since I can't at all DIY). I can comment on the VS-70 that got installed (by Chanson's own visiting staff) in Feburary 2009 in my China residence.
First of all, I was nervous when I talked to a lady in Chanson's Taiwan headquarters and was told that they have a 'factory' in Shanghai. I didn't like that fact at all! You know, with all the outrage about China's nutorious quality (and often safety) deficiency in their domestic as well as export products. But then my mother contacted their Shanghai department directly and found out that they are not fully equiped to 'manufacture' these machines, but only essembling the parts originated from their Taiwan factory for the purpose of lowering labor costs for sales in mainland China. Their price was slightly cheaper due to this I guess, by a few hundred dollars.
The nice thing was that they actually flew a staffer from Shanghai to Dalian (my actual location) to install the VS-70 and the H3 filters (yes I added the H3 filters although the water quality in Dalian is superior for China, but I wanted to be safer). I recommend a water softening armor if your water is hard, but neither of my abodes would need it.
The Chanson employee was adorable and professinal, flew into Dalian, brought along the equipments and installed it in a hour and a half. We actually had to remove a no-longer-useful little faucet from the metal sink and drilled its hole bigger to fit the Chanson fauset in, which took some struggle. So if you plan to do the same thing, you better seek help from a professional. btw, you do need some undersink space if like me, you want trash disposer, Chason's unversink unit (which is not huge) and a H3 filter set (of 3 filters).
Immediately after the installation we tested the water. Dalian's tap water, for China, is among the least polluted, and tastes crispy and sweet already with our old 3-step filters - but not without a metalic note. Now no more strange tastes, only yet sweeter. The guy showed us how to operate the machine, it took a couple of days of getting used to, and the only thing I don't like is that the voice is so tiny (there is only one little "speaker" - some needle holes on the back of the top LCD display) and easily overwhelmed by running water.
I drank the water daily at 8.5 ph level for 5 weeks before I returned to the U.S., I had prior exprience with alkalinizing bottles and drops, which I've back on now unfortunately without a Chanson installed here :-( but of course Chanson does it much better than the primative bottles and drops (which are more suitable for travels), with added filtering and inonizing. Since my consumption of alkalinized water 8 months ago (my first bottle is made by a venture brand by the Korean company Lotto), the most noticeable change I've felt is less fatigue (I'm only 32 but I've been "semi-healthy" for years due to stress), less breakouts in skin, and more regular bath-room routine! I also noticed faster hydration if I drink this water after work-outs versus the bottled mineral water sold at the gym.
I didn't have the need to dispense acidic water yet, but when the upper faucet was discharging 8.5 water (I had this setting locked for convenience), I would put a container underneath the small faucet to catch the acidic water, and save it for washing soiled kitchen towels, it gets rid of the grease like a charm, without the need for detergent! Know that at the biginning of the cycle, before the LCD and voice tell you that ionized water is dispensing, there is a brief 'generating' period, I didn't PH test this part of water, and think it is merely 'purified', but sine it's brief enough (for seconds) and Dalian's tap is already at 7.3 to start, I also consumed the 'generating' period's water. In about 5 weeks of normal consumption (of drinking only, by 4 people), the machine self-cleaned 2 or 3 times (whenever it 'decided' to) at the end of a dispensing cycle, all it did was by a 'reverse cycle' let water out of both faucets for a minute or so.
My kitchen in Dalian, regardless of it being in China, is nearly chemical free. I now have the Chanson, and Lotus sanitation system (sold also on this site Lotus Sanitizing System with Multi Purpose Bowl - LBU100), and when I have to use detergent, Mrs. Meyers. (Yes, a little high-maintanenced, but I do bring or ship personal supplies into China from America, but in this highly contanimated world, this is not at all too much work).
I am going to install a VS-70 in my house here as soon as I return from my vacation - in the short 3 weeks since my return from China, I've grown increasingly unhappy with my water bottle and drops.

(More customer reviews)I know this is a lot of money, BUT. . .I tried water from this machine at a girlfriend's health product store in Newark Delaware recently. The taste was soooo different. You use bottled water. Pour the water into the machine, set the number you want it on, then run it thru the machine. You see this little tornado like in the picture and it breaks up the water molecules and does all this scientific stuff to the water to make it easier for your body to absorb. It also adds minerals to the water based on the filter that comes with the machine. I have not gotten to all the nitty gritty yet, but I understand the filter is to be replaced once a year and costs about $85. You are supposed to work your way up in the intensity of the water from 9 to 27. I am only at 11 right now and the water tastes so fresh and clean and makes you feel really good when you drink it (energy good). Can't wait till I get up to 27. My friend said that you can make your water about 2 weeks ahead if you want to, more if you refrigerate it. Once you try it, you might not ever want regular water again. There are supposed to be a lot of health benefits to this water, too. You can easily make yourself up some and take it to work or in the car or give it to a friend to try.
My first impression of this water was such a crisp invigorating taste. It reminded me of water I experienced directly from the upper part of the Athabasca Glacier in Alberta (Western) Canada. It tasted so healthy and so pure.
I will be back when I get to 27 to give you an update.
Update Nov 25, 2008-I am up to 20, and still loving it. It has such a clean, satisfying taste. I usually brew up a bunch of bottles while I am in the kitchen getting ready for work.
Update Dec 12, 2008-I am up to 27, and still loving it. I have made some water up for several friends and they love it too. Most people can really taste the difference and seem to feel much more energized while and after drinking it. It seems to be a piece of the health puzzle. You can do some google searches on hexagonal water to find out more about clustering within the water and see some pictures of before and after water molecules.

I said sure, and thanks. Received the order in a couple of days. My wife and I are extremely happy with the purchase. I did approximately twenty hours of research on all the Ionizer(s) Why? (More customer reviews)It amazes me how the simple process of electrolysis of water (running an electric current through water) to change its pH can be marketed into devices costing thousands of dollars. With a little basic understanding of the process of electrolysis of water, the concept of electrolytes in solution in water (salt or trace minerals), you can technically make your own device with by picking up a plug-in power adapter, some metal wire, some clips, a couple plastic jugs, a section of plastic plumbing pipe, and a sack membrane.
Even $198 is way overpriced for this simple contraption. With a combination of my laziness and the neat and tidy job these guys did in making this contraption, it is still $198 well spent, especially if you really look hard at those other models costing thousands and dissect them. Sure they look more technologically advanced, but they produce the same result in the end. Sure they have a water filter built in, but I have a perfectly functional Brita water filter that I've been using, and I just use that before I dump the filtered water into my $198 water ionizer and add a pinch of trace minerals.
This budget ionizer does the job as promised, is simple, foolproof, and brings results. The picture you see in the product page is exactly what you get. With such simple technology, fewer things go wrong, and you have complete control over the amount of trace minerals you throw in, the pH (by varying the time you electrolize the water), and you can feel good about how you only spend $198 while other victims of mass marketing and network marketing get scammed out of their hard-earned greenbacks.
Please do yourself a favor and don't get scammed into parting with thousands of dollars. Educate yourself with some basic knowledge and have some common sense.

(More customer reviews)Before I bought this product I did plenty of online research on alkaline water. I was trying to understand what the benefits were and why people would pay thousands of dollars for the water ionizers. Some of the conclusions that I came to was that the alkalinity of the water was not the beneficial aspect of the water ionizers, but rather the antioxidant effects of the water. As I understand, the antioxidant effects of water or solution is measured in ORPs, which stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential, also called Redox. ORPs also measure the oxidizing effects of water.
The effects of oxidation can be witnessed when metal rusts, when a sliced apple browns, or when a material is burning. Oxidation probably works similarly in the human body, though I am not a biologist or scientist and cannot make any claims. It seems that this is why antioxidants are so popular and said to be such an important part of the body's diet. If oxidation has the effect of breaking down, then antioxidants could be said to have the effect of building up, or at least not breaking down. Please do your own research to verify the accuracy of this information.
We were contemplating purchasing one of the less expensive water ionizers ($700 range), but it didn't seem to make sense when some of the portable and inexpensive water ionizers such as this stick were making claims of producing negative ORP, which would be antioxidant water (I think). The expensive machines claim to produce water with an ORP in the range of anywhere from -200 to as high (or low) as -1100. As you might guess, ORP in the negative range is an antioxidant, whereas ORP in the positive range is an oxidant (again I think). I don't know where exactly the transition point is, meaning if 0 ORP is perfectly neutral or not.
So I decided to purchase a digital ORP meter ($100) that also measured pH at the same time I ordered the portable ionizer sticks (I ordered a NewCell Alkaline Hydrogen Portable Water Ionizer Stick and a Alkaline Hydrogen Water Stick aka Diet Water Ion Stick), since using a meter is the only way to determine the ORP and this is the critical measurement. Fortunately everything arrived at the same time. Over the next few days I ran a battery of tests using different waters and taking measurements before using the stick and after. The tests were performed in my kitchen and not highly controlled, although I did do my best by rinsing everything with each new sample using the water of that particular sample as the rinse. By the way, the two portable ionizer sticks were identical, the only difference was that one cost twice as much.
Per the instructions on the portable water ionizer I placed the stick inside of a water bottle and shook for 30 seconds, then let sit for 20 minutes. I took before and after samples. Here are the results of the tests:

Conclusions: As you can see from the results the ionizer sticks had the most significant effects on the distilled and tap waters. Also, I forgot to remove the stick one morning and it sat in the water for almost 2 hours. It raised the pH of the water by about another half point from the standard results but had no appreciable effects on the ORP. It seems that shaking the water vigorously for a longer period of time will get you lower ORP.
I think that these products are definitely worth the money, and I would recommend purchasing an ORP meter if you are serious about getting the results you want.
