I have an almost identical version of this washer, but mine is a different color. For more than 10 years, I owned an appliance business so I was pretty meticulous and careful in researching the pros and cons of the different brands and models.
I was very impressed with the SilverCare technology in this Samsung washer. I like to think that I'm pretty knowledgeable about appliances, but prior to doing my pre-purchase research, I had no idea that silver had a sterilizing effect.
According to Samsung (and other sources), the introduction of tiny bits of silver into the wash cycle will kill most bacteria and neutralize odors. The result is, your clothes will be sterilized even in not-so-hot water. The trace bits of silver remain in the clothes, inhibiting the *formation* of bacteria, minimizing the problem of stinky socks and smelly t-shirts. The down side is, your fabric softener sheets and other perfume-laden chemicals will also be de-stinked.
If you like using fabric softeners (in the washer or dryer), these products will do little more than inhibit static cling, IF you use the SilverCare feature. Most of these pleasant odors are *also* neutralized with SilverCare. Fortunately, SilverCare is an option and not something you have to use with every wash.
Another surprise is that the average wash cycle (with SilverCare) is 1:42. That's one hour and 42 minutes and that's what shows on the display, but this is not REAL time. Counting down the minutes on a timer, I find that 1:42 on the washer time is usually 1:52 or more on my mechanical timer. Perhaps that's a problem with water pressures, yet we have 3/4" copper lines to the wash line. Hard to believe that those lines deliver lesser-than-average water pressure.
One of the primary reasons I chose THIS appliance is that this model can be stacked. In that I had only a small space, I opted to stack the washer and dryer and that worked out really well. The washer is down low, but the dryer is eye-ball height. The stack kit was a mere $20 and even thought it's plastic, it's a good fit for these two units and feels snug and secure. Accessing washer or dryer door is easy and simple.
We did learn that stacking is NOT going to work with a 6' dryer cord. We had to pay an electrician to fabricate a special four-prong 220v cord (10') to reach the dryer. That's the downside of stacking these units.
Back in the day, stackable washer and dryer meant TINY capacity. The Samsung washer is a massive 3.83 cubic feet, which means you can wash a king-size comforter. It really is a VERY large machine and hard to fill up full.
I am very impressed with the quality of these appliances. The metal cabinets are well made and sturdy, the washer and dryer door have a large chrome ring (easy to wipe clean) and the drums are stainless steel. When the machine goes into high-speed spin, they're pretty much vibration free. When the cycle is finished, the washer sings a little tune. Very cute and something I never saw advertised. The "chime" (cycle finished) feature can also be silenced.
Clothes emerge from the washer mostly dry (dryer time is usually 40 minutes or less) and it does a superior job of soil extraction. And it uses tiny amounts of water, hot water, energy and detergent.
One of the best features is the "door unlock" feature. I had one of the very first Maytag Neptune front-loading washers (and was very disappointed in its performance). When you found that recalcitrant sock on the staircase and wanted to add it to the wash cycle, you'd have to wait FOREVER for the Neptune to unlock the door so you could add the sock to the wash. It took up to two minutes for the Neptune's door to unlock. Turn off the Samsung and it releases the door lock in less than 10 seconds. Yay for Samsung!
The Neptune also had a problem with mold (and bad smells) from water trapped in the door boot. I've never had that problem with the Samsung.
I highly recommend these appliances. They're easy to use, pretty to look at, fun to operate and they get the job done. Plus, the glass doors on the front of the appliances provide lots of entertainement!
