This olive pitter pinches your fingers! It is awful! I have thin fingers, but somehow the meat on my pointer gets caught between the metal pieces when I squeeze it closed! Ouch!!!

Leifheit Cherry Stoner Review

I have used this cherry stoner with smaller sour cherries and larger bing cherries. It works well no matter what the size of the cherry. I can pit 2 lbs of cherries in about 10 minutes. There is minimal squirting which can be controlled by placing your hand around the stoner near the opening to the chute down which the cherries travel. So there is no need to wear an apron while using the device. The one problem I had was trying to remove the spring and puncher from the handle. The first time I tried to pull the handle apart to remove these parts for cleaning, I couldn't squeeze the handle sides hard enough to pull the handle apart. I ended up wrapping a thin piece of rubber around the handle and then using pliers to squeeze the handle so I could pull it apart. This was only necessary the first time I tried to pull the handle apart. I can now squeeze the handle with just my hands to get it apart. So maybe the plastic is too stiff or something when the unit is new.

You might of thought that the designer of this device called a 'Cherry Stoner' would have considered that people may wish to use it to de-stone cherries. And perhaps may even have tested that it works for that purpose.
If they had, I'd like to point out a couple of issues that they would have discovered on the first day. As I did:
Firstly, it requires three people to operate. One each to load and shake the hoppers and the other to operate the handle.
The hopper loaders need to have at least three independently swiveling eyeballs so that they can watch as they load cherries; shake the hopper at exactly the correct moment and with the precisely calibrated amount of jiggle to induce the cherries to drop into the receiving holes; and be ready to snatch their hand away before the insanely sharp pitting impaler impales their fingers.
The handle operator needs the strength of an olympic weightlifter coupled with the finesse of a grand master chess player to apply precisely the correct amount of force normal to the rotational moment of the axle so as to avoid lifting the device from the table and strewing cherries on the ceiling.
Secondly, the holes that the cherries fall into in order to be pitted are so deep that when filled with a cherry they provide a smooth launching pad for subsequent cherries to roll over - directly into the pitted cherry receptacle.
Thirdly, the discarded pit channel has been designed to channel dry, perfectly smooth, absolutely spherical balls. Pits, on the other hand, being none of these do not slide along the channel and instead overflow into the pitted cherry receptacle.
Fourthly, the insanely sharp impaler is extremely poorly attached to the cam lever. Thus if it impacts something like -oh, I don't know, say, um, a cherry pit - it immediately bends.
Fifthly, you can't remove the cam in order to clean the insanely sharp impalers which, by the time you're ready to clean them, are bent into all sorts of improbable angles and are forming a thicket of razor edges that is probably of a size and shape to be banned by the Geneva Conventions.
Having said that, I did process several boxes of cherries - and as there were cherry pits all over the kitchen at the end, there must be some pitted cherries in my freezer. And the process was quite fast if you remove the time spent in the emergency room.
So my recommendation is: if you have an extraordinary number of cherries, an excessive number of digits and a good dentist then this product is right for you.

I got one of these so that I could safely feed my toddlers cherries and fancy olives more easily...this pitter served that purpose very well. If your goal is to pit enough cherries for a pie or similar recipe, however, this is *not* the cherry pitter for you. I just spent an hour and a half using this thing to pit enough cherries for a cobbler - not something I ever plan to do again. Until I get a plunge-style pitter, I plan on keeping cherries in the "delicious snack" category, not in the "baking ingredient" one.

My husband bought me the ice cream maker attachment for my KitchenAid mixer a few weeks ago, and he has been on my case to make him some cherry orchard ice cream, a flavor he remembers from his childhood. After juicing a couple of dozen limes for the sorbet he was craving, I told him he would have to pit the cherries himself or add a cherry pitter to the gadget drawer. We visited a local kitchen store where they had cherry pitters out for people to try. I narrowed it down to two choices, this one and the Oxo. I was leaning toward the Oxo because it has a splatter guard, but on careful examination, I noticed that after only a few days of being used as a demo, it was developing stress fractures. I'm sitting here with little cherry juice splatters on my shirt, but the Westmark pitter made quick work of over 5 pounds of cherries. Next time I'll wear an apron, but it's the only reason why I didn't give it five stars. Given the ease of use, I think I'll make some cherry jam as ell.

This is a great pitter for your home kitchen. It works 90% of the time for me. The other 10% of time I have the pit remains within the cherry as it fails to get punched out. I still give it a high rating since this is a mechanical solution which depends on several factors such as: the size of the cherry (medium size works best), the speed and amount of pressure you punch the pit (operator skill can improve the success rate). The one negative comment I have is that the pitter get rust very easily, and it comes without instruction on how to clean it. I found out that if you let it sit for drying after a handwash, it will get rust. What you want to do is to take the pitter apart, wash and dry them with a towel immediately after use. You can take the assembly apart by simply uncrew the black pitter handle. The spring and the metal rod can now be pulled out for cleaning. Enjoy!
