E-Composter Review

Other than easy assembly and the resonable price this product is not worth buying. The plastic is brittle and after one week of use the hinges don't stay together and one of the pannels has already cracked. Perhps if you duct tape it together before you put in the clippings it would help. It is not easy to mix the mulch on a weekly basis and when the bin is full the water does not circulate to te bottom. Definitely not worth buying. I am now looking at getting a new composting bin and will do a more thorough job in my research. Hope this helps anyone who considers buing this product.

Tumbleweed 200003 58-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin, Green Review

Tumbleweed 200003 58-Gallon Rotating Compost Bin, Green

We have just gotten our second one. This is a great product because we can just push to tumble instead of using a shovel or rake or special compost turner. Since we both have back problems that just didn't work.
It works real well even in the shade. We have ours on the north side of our house (in CA) so it takes longer than four weeks, but it still works. It does get fruit flies and other insects and worms, but we haven't had problems with rodents or raccoons, which do live in the area. If you don't put meat or fat in it, it doesn't smell like food, it smells like dirt, so mammals aren't attracted.
However once you get it filled you do need to let it sit and compost without adding anything else (it helps to keep turning). Then you need to find a place to store the compost and to move it, which was too strenuous for us. So our solution was to buy two, one for storage, one for putting new stuff in. The second one doesn't take up a lot of extra space because they both use the same space to rotate.
So start with one, then when you find out how easy it works you'll want the other one.
We ordered ours through Planet Natural and it came quickly and in good shape. It's real easy to put together (but you do need 2 people) and not that heavy when empty (about 30 pounds).

The Tumbleweed compost tumbler has a neat, compact design makes it an ideal compost bin for any level composter with any amount of garden space. By giving the Tumbleweed a spin every few days, it's easy to create fresh compost. The 100% UV protected, recycled plastic is a dark green color. When the sun hits the dark compost bin, it heats up the contents inside, speeding up the breakdown process. A stainless steel bar going through the compost bin breaks up any larger clumps that might form, further helping the breakdown process. The galvanized steel leg base makes this composting unit extremely sturdy, no matter how heavy the compost inside gets. These legs won't rust, so the composter will last many years out in the elements. With dual-end twist lock lids, it's easy to add or remove material no matter which end is up. The locking lids also prevent any small animal pests from getting into the bin. The lids are also vented, keeping the compost aerated while allowing any compost tea to drain out into the soil under the bin. The Tumbleweed compost tumbler holds up to 58 gallons of materials while continuously breaking down kitchen scraps, yard debris and other compostable materials into rich, organic compost that plants will love.

The Wizard Jr. is a great composter. It is very easy to use. The lid is easy to remove and the bin is very easy to turn to rotate your compost. It's a bit on the large side for one or two people who don't produce much waste, still works.

RTS Home Accents 5554-000100-4200 62-Gallon Collapsible Compost Bin Review

This RTS Home Accents Composter fitted poorly and the instructions were not very clear. The lid does not lock properly and WILL blow away in the wind. The door is a struggle to fit - no instructions on how to - and will undoubtedly be tough to open and replace when removing compost. The only thing preventing me from returning the item was the hassle involved. It should function (time will tell) despite the inconvenience. I suppose a brick on the lid should keep it in place.

Earth Machine Compost Bin Review

Earth Machine Compost Bin

I bought the earth machine from a boy scout project, and spent much less than the amount listed here. however, it is probably worth the higher price! I have had this bin for 1 1/2 years. This past spring I used soil from the bottom of the bin for planting. We are moving, and thought the bin was going to be hard to empty. Not so. Everything inside had composted, and I had been adding kitchen scraps to it right up to the end of September. It is just November, and everything is composted. I also seldom turned the materials inside. I did add 40 pounds of dehydrated cow manure at the beginning of the winter in 2009 and fall of 2010.
Amazing idea. I filled it with 90% kitchen scraps with just a few thin layers of grass clippings and garden waste.
Great product!
