iPet - Glucose Meter for DOGS and CATS Review

I brought my new I-Pet meter to my vet with the 24hour gloucose curve I created using the meter...As we are still in the initial stages of regulating the proper dose of insulin.
I asked him to let me check the I-Pet meter against his Alpha-Trak meter...just to make sure it was in the ballpark. I was not expecting it to perfectly match a meter costing 3 times more. If it was within 50m/dl, I would have been happy. It was not even close.
The I-Pet meter WAS OFF BY OVER 110mg/dl HIGH!!!!!!!
I asked the vet if it was possible his meter was off...he said they check it regularly against a sample sent to a lab.
I was in shock...so I thought it may be a bad batch of strips. I had a new vial of strips and chip with me so I tested again using the new strips. The first test came back perfect...within 10mg/dl of what the vet had.
We thought it was just a bad strip...but since we had a syringe of blood...I decided to run the test a few more times to be sure. The next two strips came back high by over 110mg/dl again!!!!
So using two different batches of strips and chips, with the same vial of blood, making sure the strip window had the proper ammount of blood...we got wildly innacurate readings...only one of the four tests was accurate!!! The others were way off, high.
Obviously, if I would have kept blindly using this meter, without checking it, to help dose my dog, I WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY KILLED HIM!!!
I sent this piece of junk back and spent the extra money for the Alpha-Trak. If you own this, please bring it with you to the vet to have him check it during your pets regular exam.
If I got a bad meter, then there have to be a lot more out there. These are made in China, and quality control was obviously seriously lacking in this case. This meter never should have left the factory.

AlphaTRAK Blood Glucose Monitoring Meter Kit Review

The AlphaTRAK system seems to be a good product if you can get a blood sample. The meter is easy to use and it calibrated well against the one my vet uses. I had a lot of difficulty getting a sample from my cat who is otherwise quite stoic and puts up with a lot. It's harder than it looks on the DVD. The lancets did not draw blood from the ear as I could not find a vein and they just bounced off the foot pads. Too bad the kit does not include a lancet pen. That would have helped a great deal according to a friend of mine who uses one on his cat. I called Abbott Animal Health Customer Service but they could not recommend a compatible lancet pen nor did they know if one would be available in the future. They took my name and number but I never received a call back about it so I assume the answer is no. I will likely go out and buy a lancet pen, but until I do this kit is unusable for me. I think an expensive kit like this should either include a pen or have a recommendation for a compatible pen.

This product does exactly what it says it will - provides a control number to ensure that the monitor/strips are reading correctly. Only negative is it is a little pricey considering you have to discard the bottle after 3 months whether you've used it once or it's almost empty.

My dog has been diabetic for about 5 years. Whenever she'd get sick, we'd have trouble keeping her diabetes regulated which meant several (expensive) trips to the vet. Now, with the blood glucose monitor, I can monitor here at home, get over the phone advice from my vet, and know that my dog's insulin needs are being met. Prior, it was a guessing game, one filled with anxiety. As the saying goes, knowledge is power, and this device has left me and my family feeling like we can now help her to the fullest extent with her diabetes. With that comes the incredible peace of mind of knowing that you're treating her appropriately. Fabulous product!
