Bunn My Cafe Pourover Commercial-Grade Pod Brewer Review

I purchased this brewer in December of 2008 and it has worked perfectly every day. Here is the review I wrote on 26 April of 2009 for an older Amazon listing of the same coffee maker:
"I read the reviews about how unreliable this machine was, but I figured that people who are satisfied with their purchases are less likely to write a review than people who have problems. So I took a chance.
My only complaint so far is the difficulty of the start-up procedure. I had to use a baster to force water into the reservoir pump to get it started. I learned this trick from another reviewer on this website. Bunn would do their customers a great service by including a similar tool more suited to the task with each MCP they sell, along with the accompanying instructions. I have used this coffee maker everyday for five months and it has worked perfectly. Yes, it is noisy, but who cares? I finally have a GOOD, HOT cup of coffee in the morning!
While researching coffee makers I went to the Bunn website and discovered a helpful page called "Bunn Coffee Basics" which explained how a good cup of coffee is made. Bunn says that the water temperature during brewing should be between 195 and 205 degrees and that the best flavor comes from the beginning of the brew cycle (brew too cool and too long and you get bitter, acidic coffee). These are two elements of brewing that that drip coffee makers get horribly wrong. Conventional drip brewers never get hot enough, and to make matters worse they take a very long time to brew because they heat their water on the fly. The Bunn MCP pre-heats its water in a stainless steel tank. When I first set-up my MCP I tested the temperature of the water after brewing and it was consistently above 190 degrees (some temperature is lost during the brewing cycle).
I justified the high cost of purchase in two ways:
1. The convenience of brewing at home cannot be overstated. I get my coffee when I want it, the way I want it.
2. Coffee pods cost about 20 to 25 cents each. Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts coffee costs a dollar thirty and up, depending on where you live. For me this machine will pay for itself in less than a year."
Nothing has changed about my opinion of this brewer. It makes hot, great tasting coffee fast.

On getting ready to order another Cafe Uno I decided to read some other opinions. Hmm. Here's a recommendation for everyone who orders any one of these one cup coffee makers: Use a paper filter. With this unit I simply cut a paper napkin into 16 little squares and place one in the basket on each making. On the other two one cup makers I purchased I used regular coffee filters (small ones). The other two units I bought were made by Brookstone and Black & Decker. I've owned the Brookstone for several years. It's been excellent. It's just getting old and the coffee doesn't taste as good as it used to. The Black & Decker lasted for a month before it burned out (sometimes with these I forget to add water, realize my mistake, then put the water in without letting it cool down). You shouldn't shock the heater that way, but on the other hand, both the Brookstone and the Uno One have been very forgiving. The one thing the Uno One doesn't have that the others had is an automatic shut-off. On the other hand, forgetting to turn off the lighted switch doesn't seem to hurt anything. By the way, the porcelain cup that comes with this little guy is only about 7 oz. One other point, I've found that very slightly less than a level scoop of Yuban coffee grounds makes the best cup. Why am I buying another? Because this one makes better coffee than any coffee maker I've ever owned .. so I want another for a spare .. just in case.

I love coffee. And, I'm kind of an elitist when it comes to coffee. I can only use really good beans-- right now I'm using Lavazza, but my every day coffee is starbucks brand. The problem is, I cannot produce a good POT of coffee for the life of me. I don't know why. I use filtered water. I clean out the carafe. My regular every day machine has a water filter. I don't know why my pots of coffee are horrid compared to my husband's pots of coffee, which taste as if they came from the local coffeehouse/espresso bar.
So, after getting a free senseo (YUCK!), and giving it to a friend, I bought this little coffee maker. IT makes a really good cup of coffee I have not messed up even one time. And, I use it 5-10 times per day. It is just excellent. I've been looking at the higher priced one cup makers, such as the Tassimo, but I'm not sure I need it. With freshly ground good beans, this little coffee maker does the job.
This coffee maker, by the way, makes a hot cup of coffee-- definitely as hot as every full-size coffeemaker I've ever had. I'm wondering if the other reviewer just got a machine that didn't work too well. Or, maybe he just likes it from boiled water. Whatever the case, if you're used to drinking coffee made from regular drip machines, this one is fine.
I've had this coffeemaker for at least two months now, and I literally use it 5 to 10 times per day. I keep expecting it to break, because it's definitely not made expensively, but it keeps going. I think it's a great choice for someone like me or someone in an office.
This comes with a durable reusable gold-colored metal filter.

The perfect size for home, office, RV, or dorm-room use, this single-cup coffeemaker quickly brews one delicious cup of coffee at a time--no more wasted, leftover coffee turning bitter in a pot. Brew directly into any favorite mug--most will fit inside the compartment--or brew into the ceramic 10-ounce mug that comes included. The unit accommodates a variety of mug sizes and comes with an extra base to fit large mugs. In addition to making coffee, the appliance also produces hot water for tea, hot cocoa, instant soups, and more. Other highlights include an illuminated "on/off" switch, a water-level window for easy filling, a permanent nylon filter, and a small footprint that takes up minimal space on the counter or desk. The personal-size coffeemaker measures 5-2/7 by 6 by 8-2/7 inches and carries a two-year limited warranty.

What a failure!
Seemed just right for a simple way to make a quick single brewed cup of coffee. Small, low profile and uses little space on the counter. The science is so simple and established that I figured there could be no problems.
Wrong, it cannot deliver more than 6 ounces of water through the system, even though the water well holds 12 ounces. If you drink more than six ounces (smaller than a juice glass) of coffee, this is not the unit for you.
The well is filled with 12 ounces and the machine starts to brew. Good. Then, about half way through the process (VERY slow) it simply stops. I used my own 12oz mug which fits well but the pot seems pooped and just keeps on heating the water without delivering it through the plumbing. I have "plunged" the small water hole in the bottom if the well with no results.
I've tried it five times, wasting coffee and time and it simply doesn't want to work.
I'm planning to use it for a planter. Small cut wildflowers will look nice. For coffee, I'm going to a real working product.
It doesn't pay to return this item because the time and postage will make it too expensive.
This is junk, pure and simple.
