YAMA 8 Cup Vacuum Pot Coffee Brewer - Coffee Siphon Review

When I first seen this product, I was trying to decide between it and the Bodum. Having made a side by side comparison, I decided I liked the handle on the Yama model better (it looked more sturdy). I was a little hesitant about buying it at first because it was made in Taiwan, but when my pot arrived I knew i made the right decision. The coffe pot is hand made and the quality of the craftsmanship is exceptional. When I purchased this unit, I also purchased a cory glass filter from ebay to us in place of the filter assembly that comes with this unit for about $15.00 (shipping included), I highly recommend this and it works great. I have used this brewer several times now using coffe ground for auto drip and it works great; my friend who is a coffe fanatic said it was better than starbucks and is buying one of these as I write this review. I did not buy this product through Amazon because quite frankly the 20 dollar shipping charges that the seller (Expresso Parts Northwest) is charging for this item is outragious! (Sorry Amazon). Shop arround, I payed what Expresso charges here on this site with shipping included. I buy a lot of things from Amazon and wanted to write a review for the Amazon shopping community. If you love the taste of a good cup of coffe, buy this brewer you will not be disappointed. There is a little more work involved than a automatic drip machine and if you are all about convenience, than don't buy this product, but if you love coffe and don't mind a little extra time and effort in producing an exceptional cup of coffe than this product is for you!

8 cup vacuum pot coffee brewer. The Yama Vacuum Brewer ships with one filter cloth, the filter assembly, a measuring spoon, lid/stand, and vacuum brewer. Additional filters are available for an additional charge. "Cup" refers to Yama's idea of what a cup should be and equals about 3-4 ounces for each cup. Directions for use: Use a slightly finer grind of coffee, somewhere around "auto drip" however you may experiment to taste. Drop the washable, reusable cloth covered filter into the infusion chamber with the chain hanging down into the glass syphon tube. Pull the chain down until you can hook it to the bottom of the siphon tube. Fill the bottom carafe to the 8 cup mark with hot water and place 8 measuring spoons of coffee mark in top chamber. Using the wire trivet between the coffee siphon and the burner place the coffee siphon on the burner and turn on to medium heat. DO NOT TURN THE BURNER ON HIGH As the water boils, it will be siphoned up to the top chamber where it will infuse with the ground coffee. A little water will always remain in the bottom water chamber. Let brew about 60 seconds, then remove the pot from the heat source. Once the coffee starts to cool the liquid is siphoned back down into the bottom carafe. Remove the top, placing it in its convertible lid/stand, and bring the pot to the table for serving. Gently rock the upper carafe back and forth until it can easily be removed and placed into it's stand. Serve and enjoy your fresh great tasting coffee. Although Isopropyl (Rubbing) Alcohol which is available at all drug stores can be used in the alcohol burner, Denatured Alcohol which can be purhcased most hardware stores will burn hotter and help heat the water quicker. Smoothest cup of coffee I've ever had. There's no acid and the flavor of the coffee is out standing. Usually I can only drink two cups of coffee and then my stomach starts to bother me, with the cold brew I can drink coffee all day long.

Krups FME2 12 Cup Glass Programmable Coffeemaker Review

Krups FME2 12 Cup Glass Programmable Coffeemaker

I was a little concerned about opening up shop away from home, 3 states away, and having to leave my tried and true Krups Pro Aroma behind. Granted, its an 8 year old model, but it made a great cup of coffee, and I had mastered the fairly simple interface for programming and setup.
In my search, I read a LOT of negative reviews about the new Krups product family. Really not a surprise cause even the Pro Aroma had its many quirks, but still.....the coffee. So, after reading a bunch of bad reviews on Braun, Mr Coffee, Cuisinart, and Krups coffeemakers, I figured $60 was worth the risk to plunk down on this model. My first impression when I opened the box was that the coffemaker was solid and well constructed, but that the carafe was too light and thinly formed. But after two weeks of use I really cant find anything to complain about.
Yes, the carafe is very light, but I like it. And it pours well with no drips. I havent yet attempted to program the machine cause thats not a necessity for me, but hit the "ON" button and in about 5 minutes you have a fast, hot, and extraordinarily flavored pot of coffee. And this is honestly the best coffee I've ever had from this machine, even much better than my old Pro Aroma from the same manufacturer.
I dont know how Krups does it, and I dont care, this machine is just one of the best on the market today, and probably thee best when we're talking about the quality of the end result...which is all that matters. 5 beans

Combining appealing and distinctive design with a powerful, fully programmable brewing system, this 1100-watt coffeemaker provides fast and efficient brewing. The unit features a cascading brew head that delivers a shower of hot water to ensure even extraction, while its flavor-control aroma switch maximizes flavor--perfect when brewing smaller amounts. Even more, the coffeemaker's bright-blue, illuminated LED control panel makes it easy to program the clock and timer, which allows for waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and offers automatic shut-off options (from one to five hours). A glass carafe comes included, complete with a stay-cool handle and a drip-free pour spout. For sneaking a quick cup of coffee midbrew, simply remove the carafe from the machine to pause the flow of coffee, then replace the carafe to continue the brewing process--a nice feature, particularly for those in a hurry for that first sip. Other highlights include a 60-ounce water reservoir, an empty water-reservoir detection function that shuts the unit off automatically if empty, an audible "ready" signal at the end of the brewing cycle, and a DuoFilter water-filtration system that removes chlorine for better-tasting coffee and helps reduces mineral deposits for longer machine life. The sleek-looking coffeemaker measures 10-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 13-3/4 inches.

Jacobs Kroenung Coffee, T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers, 16-Count Packages (Pack of 2) Review

Jacobs Kroenung Coffee, T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers, 16-Count Packages (Pack of 2)

This is a great cup of coffee for the Tassimo. I'm so delighted that Amazon has finally started carrying the European and Canadian brands and this one does not disappoint.
The taste is great - not bitter, and probably more on the lighter side than the stronger side (despite the very dark color of the final product). For the American folk - be warned: be sure to stand by the Tassimo to utilize the manual mode (for those who don't know, you can push the button when it blinks manual to add more brew). This Jacobs Kroenung Coffee, T-Discs for Tassimo Coffeemakers, 16-Count Packages (Pack of 2) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] t-disc makes about a 6 oz brew and I added some additional to make a full American cup with no issue.
When I first put in my normal amount of creamer (I use a sugar free Coffeemate Hazelnut) it was a little overkill, which suggests a slightly lighter coffee than my old mainstay, the Gevalia Crema.
All in all, a great little cup. I will be keeping these in my pantry for frequent use!

Nescafe Dolce Gusto for Nescafe Dolce Gusto Brewers, Espresso, 16-Count Capsules (Pack of 3) Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto for Nescafe Dolce Gusto Brewers, Espresso, 16-Count Capsules (Pack of 3)

In every sense, this is a fine quality espresso. I was surprised that Nestle could prepackage espresso in a capsule yet retain all of the desirable characteristics of a good espresso. The espresso is strong yet smooth, sweet without bitterness, and had nice thick crema. I haven't enjoyed an espresso this good in a long time, but this was a pleasure to sip.
I've been a fan of Green Mountain Coffee Extra Bold Espresso Blend, but I have to admit that the Dolce Gusto Espresso wins this battle.
This would also make a nice base for homemade coffee beverages. At 44 cents per serving, this is not only inexpensive but makes a nice afternoon pick-me-up drink.

Nescafe Dolce Gusto for Nescafe Dolce Gusto Brewers, Cappuccino, 16-Count Capsules (Pack of 3) Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto for Nescafe Dolce Gusto Brewers, Cappuccino, 16-Count Capsules (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

I bought the Dolce Gusto machine in 2008, and have been an avid fan of the machine and the capsules ever since.
While I do have a couple pointers (not quite complaints, but advice to make your Dolce Gusto experience better) that pertain to the machine itself -- and thus the final coffee product -- I feel the capsules themselves are not at fault for any of the machine's problems.
After many days of getting used to the machine, I've found that loosely following the recommended milliliter measurements on the boxes is a good start, and from there it's up to you. Personally, I do just the recommended amount of milk and then pour the espresso until I see the tiniest hint of transparency in the flow. From there I wait anywhere from half a minute to a few minutes (the longer you wait, the more espresso left in the capsule makes it's way to the bottom ready to get the last flush of hot water...but at the same time, the more the foam melts into the coffee), depending on what other busy morning activities I've gotten myself into while preparing the drink, and then push another few seconds worth of espresso out of the capsule. Does this make a world of difference in strength? I doubt it...but it gives me just that much darker of a drink and it makes me feel like I'm getting the most bang for my buck.
Ofcourse, the fact that I can get that much more espresso out of the capsule by waiting a bit isn't necessarily all the capsule's fault, but it is truly my only caveat (I also wonder if it's possible to make recyclable capsules...). Either way, unless I've really overdone the amounts of milk or espresso (or haven't gotten back to the machine in time to turn it off), getting a 'watered-down' cappuccino is not possible and, in my opinion, purely an 'operator problem' (see tip above).
Also something to note: a generally accepted typical single shot of espresso is made up of 8g of ground coffee and the final product shouldn't be any more than 35mL. The instructions on the package tell you to pour about 40mL (and there is exactly 8g of espresso in the capsule). In other words, if you overdo the espresso capsule, you'll be getting a noticeably watered down espresso (as for the whole cappuccino, I usually can't tell if I've overdone it a touch).
Guests have always commented on the excellent look (use clear glasses for quite the show), feel, and taste of the foam and milk. I have to agree that compared to using other capsule-based machines where one has to purchase an extra milk-frother (and deal with the clean-up, supplies, etc), this system easily produces a comparable (at least) milk and foam experience, with very little hassle (if any).
When it comes to flavors, there's been a long-standing tie between Cappuccino and the Latte Macchiato in my household. We tend to always have a supply of Cappuccino around with the occasional box of Macchiatto every month or two. Cappuccino is definitely a favorite. Top notch. Never had a problem with a bad after-taste, or at least nothing but the great taste of good espresso.
For those who like to know where their coffee comes from: the milk is from France and the coffee capsules are from England (although the actual 100% ground and roasted arabica beans themselves, I don't know). Also, there's 8g of ground coffee in the espresso capsules (the Latte Macchiato has less -- in fact, the Macchiato box recommends 50mL of espresso for a capsule that contains 6.5g...in other words, the amount of espresso that you'd find in a fairly small single shot with the amount of water reserved for a small double shot...perhaps one of the reasons I tend to prefer the Cappuccino).
And ofcourse, buying the boxes from Amazon.com with the subscribe and save is the most inexpensive option I've found.
Also, make sure to sign-up online at Dolce Gusto's website for the award points you get with every box. With a box of three from Amazon (through subscribe and save), AND factoring in the 5 award points you get with every box (with which you can redeem Amazon gift cards), the price per box drops to a little over 6 dollars (compared to ~9 dollars a box at Sur la Table and other retailers).
And since I'm a money-saving statistics addict, I'm especially happy about the fact that the online rewards program keeps track of all the points you've ever recorded (thus telling me how many boxes I've ever purchased). This helps me calc. how much money I've saved in total in comparison to, say, Starbucks.
All in all, if you're not quite willing to shell out major bucks for a real espresso machine, and have limited counter-space to begin with, the Dolce Gusto machine is an easy choice (they just released new and improved versions, too). **And, as of early October '10, they've revamped their boxes, giving them a classier, more matte-like finish (along with a recycle symbol on the bottom) and a cleaner look in terms of pictures and text. Great improvement to the design, and a fun, refreshing face-lift.**
In terms of capsules, the Cappuccino is a solid choice -- a staple in my cabinet.
