Espresso Knock Box & Tamper Ready Base Stainless Steel Review

At first I felt that this knock box was too expensive and put off ordering it. But, having used it for several weeks, I see that it is worth the price. It is a very sturdy and well designed piece of equipment. I bought Terry's tamper and it fits very nicely in the base. It really improved my espresso-making experience.

This is a fabulous knockout box. It features a tamper ready base to consolidate espresso tools, keeping the knockout box and tamper within easy reach of the machine. The body is constructed of stainless steel and houses a removable rubber coated bar. The heavy rubber base resists sliding and includes a station for a tamper. It provides a convenient, no fuss, no mess way to safely dispose of your coffee grinds. An ideal gift for the discerning coffee drinker! Tamper NOT included, but is available separatelly

It's just what we needed. After a major bill to a plumber who told us that coffee grounds collect like sand and clog pipes, we decided that $30 for a knock box was money well invested.
As many have said, the box is too small for commercial use but it's perfect for home and it even fits under the pour spout on the espresso machine for storage. The rubber feet and squat design hold it steady on the counter. The bar is wide, sturdy and rubber coated so it's not likely to dent your filter unit. And the low cut front edge insures that you don't accidentally hit the handle or your finger on the edge.
I think $30 is too high of a mark-up, but nothing cheaper looked nearly as functional. If ours was stolen by a coffe loving burglar (I don't expect it will break) I would buy another immediately.

An excellent product. Sturdy design, easy to clean, and fits perfectly under my espresso maker's group head.
My only complaints are THE PRICE. Seriously, $30+ for a plastic cup?
Also the noise. Dreamfarm's website reads, "Thick and durable rubber sleeve protects the group handle, absorbs the striking force and makes it quiet to use."
I have to laugh at this. Knocking grounds out of my group head sounds like I'm hammering a grand piano with a 5 pound sledge. My neighbor even asked what all the banging was in the morning.
Sorry Dreamfarm. The Grindenstein's patented shape AMPLIFIES sound. Try it out yourselves sometime.
By far the best option on the market though. Go ahead and get one.

This is a good knock box if there is only one person in the house drinking espresso. Perfect for someone like myself who only has a double shot every morning. It holds about 8 double shot "pucks" comfortably. The color in this picture is accurate. The red definately stands out on the counter!

RSVP Endurance Bamboo Espresso Knock Out Box Review

We like this box very much. Unfortunately, it did arrive broken - one of the corner joints had completely popped open. However, some wood glue and a clamp for 24hours fixed the issue and we've been enjoying it ever since. Unlike another knock box we had previously, this box is easy to clean and looks as nice as can be expected on the counter.

You might think "flimsy and undersized" when you see this, but it's actually a very practical knockout box for an ordinary home kitchen. The heavy rubber base is a critical piece that you'd probably overlook in picking up a larger industrial knockout box, and it really is a great sound-deadening part of it. But here's the rub: that rubber sheath around the metal bar begins to come apart after six months or so, and not only ceases to keep you from banging directly on the metal bar, but decomposes into a mass of grimey rubber that partly coats the bar and partly just falls into the box. So whatya do? Take the bar down to your local hardware store and ask for a short length of rubber house to cover it. They'll help you get the right diameter. I bought 3" of handsome blue airhose (heavy rubber under blue rubber with nylon mesh to strengthen it) for $0.35 and it's been a dream.

Nothing better than enjoying your own home roasted espresso in the morning, no?
This is the knockout box I am replacing. One reviewer didn't like the rubber hose. I don't mind that sort of thing. The size is fine. The quality is fine. The object is inexpensive and highly utilitarian.
The reason I am replacing this one, though, is that the nuts holding the bar come loose periodically, requiring you to tighten them. Forget to tighten them and one will inevitably pop off in the middle of a vigorous pounding, leaving the puck to disintegrate into flying grounds (happened twice). The manufacturer should add lock-nuts to the construction.
Also, the black base is painted fiberboard. Eh. Solid hardwood would be nice, but would cost more. Solid rubber might be better. So, I will get either this one RSVP Modern Espresso Knockout Box, or one from SweetMarias dot com, the site where I get all my coffee roasting gear.
Good sipping and good hunting.
