(More customer reviews)After doing my research, I decided to give Coleman's Mosquito Deleto 2500 a try. I first considered the Mosquito Magnet Liberty Plus. But, after reading numerous reviews detailing all of the quality control issues and/or quirky problems people have getting that unit to start and stay lit, I decided that the street price for the Liberty Plus was just too high for a product that didn't seem very reliable or serviceable by the consumer. I also work with 4 people who own either the Liberty or the Liberty Plus and it turns out that 3 of the 4 people have gone through one or more of the well documented non-recoverable problems with these units. I also found a CBS News link that did an excellent test on both the Coleman 2500, the Liberty Plus, and third mosquito trap called the Skeeter Vac - and based on reading that article, I decided to get the Coleman unit.
The Coleman Mosquito Deleto 2500 unit I bought appears to be a re-engineered version of the Mosquito Magnet Liberty Plus, at half the cost, about $330. (Do not confuse the Coleman 2500 with the earlier Coleman mosquito trap which uses sticky paper to trap the bugs. Many reviews of that Coleman sticky trap unit show that it doesn't catch many bugs. - so I decided to stay away from that one also.)
After installing the unit in my back yard, I can tell you that it catches lots of mosquitoes and tiny no-see-ums, and it makes a big difference in getting bitten in my yard. I live adjacent to my town forest, so I placed the unit at the edge of the woods, thinking the bugs will get attracted to the unit before flying around my back yard and biting me and my family. I had a camp fire out back a couple of nights ago, and I was actually able to sit there in shorts without taking a DEET bath! The unit started up easily and I like the fact that Coleman used a simple battery pack which consists of 3-AA NiCad batteries which can be purchased cheaply virtually anywhere when they finally run out of juice. (Try replacing a dead "power module" on the Liberty Plus -HA!!! Good luck and empty your wallet!)
I do have to say that ALL of these propane driven mosquito traps have an inherent problem which potential buyers should be aware of. They use propane at an extremely SLOW rate. A 20 lb. bottle of gas is suppose to last about thee weeks - while running continuously. Because of this, the fuel nozzle opening is VERY tiny and is virtually guaranteed to eventually get clogged - don't be fooled, I believe that the majority of these type of mosquito traps will fail to work because of partial or total clogging of the fuel nozzle! In fact, my Deleto 2500 got clogged and stopped working after a while. What I like once again is Coleman's simple and practical solution to this problem. First of all - the gas nozzle is a $3 part and they give you an extra one. Secondly, it is easily removable by the use of a hand tool that is mounted on the trap so you don't loose the tool. Since you can remove the nozzle, unclogging it is accomplished by simply removing the tip from the nozzle - and cleaning it with a solvent like carburetor cleaner and blowing it out with compressed air. The solvent does an excellent job of clearing out a totally clogged tip and you don't have to shell out $$$ for CO2 cartridges every month to clear out the fuel system like the Liberty. Plus, CO2 alone doesn't clean out the tiny tip as effectively as a solvent - never can, never will!!! You will never be able to clean out the Liberty fuel tip with solvent because, guess what....it is NOT serviceable by the owner. What where they thinking when they designed this!!! Personally, I think this is why there are so many problems with the Liberty units during the second season of use. Coleman's approach to this problem is simple, practical, and cheep! I hope I continue to feel this way next year....only time will tell. Because of this, I think the Coleman Mosquito Deleto 2500 is the way to go, but don't forget, you will have to occasionally clean the tip out to keep it running(or replace it for $3 if you don't want to deal with cleaning it).

Will the Mosquito Magnet capture bees, moths, butterflies, ladybugs, or other beneficial insects? No. Blood seeking insects have receptors in their maxillary palps (mouth parts) that sense carbon dioxide. Non-blood seeking insects, without these receptors, are not attracted.

Is it possible to dramatically reduce the biting insect population in an area? Yes. 90% of the mosquitoes biting you live within 100 yards of where you are. The other 10% are brought in by the wind (most mosquitoes do not migrate). They cannot detect your carbon dioxide beyond 100 yards. As the females are trapped, the generations are eliminated, thereby interrupting the breeding cycle in that area. This usually occurs after 4 to 6 weeks of continuous use.
How many mosquitoes can I expect to capture? The quantity of mosquitoes caught varies greatly, depending on your region's infestation level and how it is placed on your property. In tests in the Florida Everglades (high infestation) 1,500 were captured in one night. In more urban areas, catch results may be much less. A good yardstick is "Am I being bitten?"
What maintenance is necessary to keep the Mosquito Magnet running effectively? The propane tank and octenol cartridge should be replaced every 21 days. We recommend having a full tank on-hand to swap out. The mosquitoes will quickly repopulate if the Mosquito Magnet is turned off. The net should be emptied when it is half full.
What other fuel can be used to run the Mosquito Magnet? Any combination of propane and butane can be used, including pure butane. Natural gas cannot be used.
Is the Mosquito Magnet cost-effective? Yes. Estimated propane costs are $10 - $12 per month. The Mosquito Magnet Liberty consumes about the same electricity as an electric clock.
Is the Mosquito Magnet quiet? Yes. The only moving part is the internal fan, which is virtually silent.
When can the Mosquito Magnet be turned off? The Mosquito Magnet should run continuously to catch both day- and night-biting mosquitoes until the temperature is consistently below 50º F.

(More customer reviews)We purchased this to try to address moisquitos getting into our cabin and bothering us at night. It picked up quite a few, although they still bothered us as well. But out of the box, the black light didn't work. As the text stated it was a new type, I didn't know how bright it should be. Called the 800 number and left a message. After a couple of days, opened it up and found the bulb wasn't plugged in, so plugged it in and then the light worked as well as the fan. The light and the fan takes some getting used to if you're trying to sleep in the same room with them, which we were. But three months later, I'm still waiting for Flowtron to call me back and address the question I had left with them. So the unit is OK, but the company isn't much on customer service (at least to this customer!).

(More customer reviews)We live in an area that has a protected county park right outside our backyard fence. This park is heavily wooded and quite damp as well. This means we have a major mosquito problem. After 8pm we were forced to go inside or be eaten alive. You could easily get 5 bites within 2 minutes after dark.
We tried everything from torches to incense. Nothing really worked all that great. This summer I am pregnant so I am unable to use any sprays that contain deet. That was our main driving factor for wanting a product like the skeeterVac. After looking at MANY different brands (Mosquito Magnet included) We decided to get the SV-27 1 acre version.
We hooked it up and the very first night it caught about 100 mosquitoes. I have to admit I was having fun going out to check on how well it was doing. It only caught maybe 10 during the day, but once the sun went down we brought in the swarms.
Placement is VERY, VERY important. You want to make sure you put it in a shady area near bushes/weeds/flowers or near wet areas. This will help attract the maximum number of bugs. The first place we put it worked out great. Every single night we catch hundreds and hundreds of mosquitoes. We've had it about a week now and already I can notice a difference when going out at night. I'm not swarmed and I can actually sit outside without being eaten alive! I can only imagine this will get better as the weeks go on and we cut down on the mosquito population.
Let me tell you why I think this product works so well and why you should buy this INSTEAD of the more expensive mosquito magnet (or other brands):
First off this unit is CORDLESS! It works on the propane tank and one AA battery. You can place it anywhere you want without having to worry about the cord. (think of what a pain a cord would be when its time to mow the lawn)
Even though its cordless its still quite powerful. Placing your hand near the fan you can easily feel the air that sucks the mosquitoes into the traps. (NOTE, this is the sv-27 1 acre version. The 1/2 acre version does NOT have a fan and may not work as well)
This product uses FIVE methods to attract and kill mosquitoes:
1) CO2
2) Fan suction
3) Scented Bait
4) Sticky paper in mosquito attracting black/white colors. (not found on most other units!)
5) Flashing colored LED lights (not found on most other units!)
These five items make it irresistible to mosquitoes. Now the only time I get bit is when I walk over to the machine to check on how well its working.
Not only does it have more methods of attracting and killing mosquitoes, but its also MORE AFFORDABLE than other brands! Why would you buy anything else??? Another bonus.... the bait in this unit lasts for SIXTY days vs the MM 30 day bait. (Another savings!)
I give this unit 5 stars. It works well and its more affordable than competitors. If you have a big mosquito problem like we did, its worth the investment. I know it seems like a lot, but start keeping track of what you already spend on repellent and you may be able to justify the cost.

I wanted to come back and edit my review to include an update on the product. 3 months after purchase we had problems getting the motor to stay running. It would ignite, the temp needle would climb for about 15 seconds, and then it would go out and the needle would go back down. I was told prior to buying the product that this was a known issue with ALL propane mosquito attractant systems. I bought the skeetervac knowing this might happen, but was reassured that their customer service was excellent. (Another reason I picked SkeeterVac over Mosquito Magnet)
Thankfully the other reviewers were right. Their customer service is GREAT. I called and explained the problem. They told me how to check the fuel filter as well as how to try and blow out the input line with some compressed air. Neither worked, but they were still very helpful and ready to send out a replacement right away! After receiving my receipt proving that I wasn't over my 1 year warrenty, they mailed out a brand new motor! I hooked the motor up on Sunday and its up and running again!
The only con is they do not pay for return shipping. It isn't too bad though b/c I was able to ship the motor back, (I choose to go with UPS) for around $12 (including insurance coverage). You can ship the cheapest way you want as long as you get it back to them, so you may find it cheaper to go with another carrier.
Customer service was friendly and helpful. I still give this unit 5 stars. I knew the failure possibility when buying the machine, but I also knew Blue Rino is the type of company to stand behind their products and properly replace them in an afforadable and timely manner. They were always very friendly and willing to help keep the customer happy! Northline Express does have the best prices on replacement tac traps and bait. We caught SO many mosquitos in just the 3 months we had it running, I was amazed!

It has significantly reduced the mosquito population in my back yard. It did take some time as promised to kill them off, but I can really tell the difference from one side of the yard (where the mosquito magnet is located by my deck) to the other. Keep in mind that this thing promises at best a 1 acre coverage and my yard is 2 1/2.

(More customer reviews)I've purchased this item from J&R a week ago. I've tested this item away from the window, near the windows, on the table, on the floor and so forth. All the tests were conducted in the dark at night. Every single mosquito or a fly didn't even think of coming near this unit. They all flew by and none got inside. The fan is LOUD! Forget about having this unit in baby's room since it's loud and the light is bright.
This unit is worthless since in 7 days it hasn't cought a thing. Very typical of Stinger products. Other person reviewing this item probably works for the company :)[...]...
I only wish flowtron would make similar product...

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Mosquito Magnet Defender (MMD) model about five weeks ago for my parents home on a wooded, heavily vegetated lot in Ohio.
Having recently seen a TV interview with a West Nile Virus victim that was nearly killed I felt a strong need to eliminate this risk to my parents, who are at greater risk because of their advancing age.
My father likes to sit outside on the patio for hours reading the paper and smoking. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes make it difficult to sit there sometimes. Even so, he is the type of person to brush off the risk and refuse to wear repellent. A prime candidate for West Nile should there be virus present.
I had a Defender shipped to their address and was anxious to set it up and start sucking in huge quantities of mosquitoes. I was hoping for spectacular results because I knew they would find out how much the unit cost and question my decision to purchase it.
We assembled the unit pretty easily but we did have to purchase a new propane tank before starting. The MMD appears to be a solidly built unit designed for constant exposure to weather.
Determining the correct location for the trap is important and the method is detailed on their website. You must also place the trap within reach of an electrical outlet. The cord is quite long but you will need an exterior outlet or a way to run the cord into your house.
Upon startup there is a brief warm up period where the status light on the power switch blinks red. When fully operational it turns to a solid red and stays that way until the unit runs out of propane. You can hear a quiet hum from the fan(s). The unit blows a downward plume of warm carbon dioxide and simultaneously vacuums up the air near the source of the plume. The warm CO2 and an Octenal cartridge (included) attract the biting insects. The insects hover around the mouth of the machine and make a number of passes at it until they get caught in a mild vacuum and sucked into a metal-screened net assembly. The air stream is strong enough to prevent them from flying out and they struggle to stand up in the net until they dry up and die. The open net is visible from the exterior of the machine through a clear plastic access door. You can check the contents of the trap without touching the machine. The net assembly is easy to empty and is sturdy enough to rinse clean and reuse many times. You're supposed to leave the MMD run 24/7 to maximize its impact on the mosquito population.
In the first couple of hours of operation my unit caught a few mosquitoes and a bunch of no-see-ums. The next couple of weeks were about the same. I wanted to see hundreds of mosquitoes but got a couple of dozen. The propane tank ran out after about three weeks and I had a few dozen mosquitoes, a bunch of no-see-ums and a tiny spider that crawled in to eat on the dead bugs. Not exactly a justification for purchase. But there simply were not many mosquitoes present in the yard at that point in their reproductive cycle.
It turned out to be a mistake to measure the machine by the number of mosquitoes in the net. As the previously laid eggs hatched the MMD then captured many of the newly hatched young. Now I am in week five (end of July) and the unit has captured about 50-100 mosquitoes in just the last 3-4 days. They appear to be newly hatched young. I am excited to think of all the offspring these insects WON'T be having and I am reassured that the MMD actually works in the presence of mosquitoes.
And this is the key to owning one of these machines. They are most effective over a period of time. Unlike a vacuum cleaner which does it job in just one pass, the Mosquito Magnet takes in the insects a few at a time and prevents them from reproducing hundreds more for the future. Mosquitoes do not migrate so once you've knocked down your local population it is difficult for them to recover. Having spent a lot of money, the temptation is for wanting a spectacular, instant return on your investment - but that is unlikely. The MMD does catch mosquitoes and probably does so better than other products. But the results are not instantaneous.
The real test will be after two or three seasons. If the MMD can create a mosquito free zone for multiple seasons it will probably have paid for itself. Of course, the more you dislike mosquitoes, the more valuable it will be.
The downside is the cost of the unit. Is there a cheaper way to do the job? Chemicals are probably cheaper, but those have a downside too. The MMD works constantly and with no effort on your part for three weeks at a time. It is easier, cleaner and safer than chemicals.
Unlike Citronella and DEET, which temporarily repels the mosquitoes only for them to return to bite another day and unlike poison which wipes out the entire spectrum of insects, the MMD selectively kills only biting insects. It permanently eliminates them in an environmentally conscious manner. Other insects are simply not attracted to the machine. The ease and cleanliness of the operation are appealing.
I would recommend the Mosquito Magnet Defender because it is promising over the long run. Its design and principle of operation are logical. It does seem to capture a large proportion of the mosquitoes that it comes into contact with and so far it appears to be a good investment.
But only time will be the final judge of its cost effectiveness.

(More customer reviews)I bought this item specifically for trying to bring down the mosquito population in my backyard but I had very disappointing results with it. There's not much to this unit, you snap on the brim, attach the cage that holds the mosquito attractant, hang the unit up, and plug it in. The unit works based on attracting mosquitoes into the cage area, then a vacuum sucks them down to the electrified grid where they then fall out of the bottom of the unit. I placed a sheet of white plastic on the ground directly underneath the unit and ran it 24 hours a day for a week. It has only managed to fry a single moth.I have seen mosquitoes land on the outer framework of this unit and then simply fly off. The vacuum on this unit wasn't strong enough to bend a blade of grass. It's possible that the unit I purchased is defective, either way I'm returning it. I would definitely recommend checking the return policy before purchasing this unit.

Bought and am using it now with success. Items that might be useful to your purchase decision are propane (16 days to replacement ($19.60 per tank)), supposed to replace tak-trap (approx. $8) also, plus every 30 days the manual suggests replacing the octonal (fine tune) at $17 each, making the monthly price you will be bitten by is approx. $35 per month in maintenance. Its worth it to us, but with an 8 month season (Florida), it isn't cheap. We find it useful to purchase two tanks and get refills both at once to cut down on tank transfers.
Have tipped it over once (backed into it with the golf cart quite fast) and it broke the plastic retention and cover holder into about three pieces and with some super glue, repaired it and it still works.
You'll also need zappers to be rid of flies and other insects since it doesn't seem help with them.
You'll hear some fan type noise but negligible if over 20' from unit.
All together, satisfied with its operation.

(More customer reviews)There are several different versions of this product, each one for increasingly large areas. This one--the smallest--is good for up to half an acre of protection. It's the perfect size for a large patio or deck and a modest lawn. Some may not like the zapping sound interrupting their nighttime outdoor fun, but it is probably the most environmentally-sensitive way to rid your lawn and patio of bugs. The 15 watts of power needed to run this machine also make it one of the cheapest bug eliminators.
One of the great things about this model is unheralded in the list of features Amazon gives. With the addition of an (included) strip of UV-activated bait, it's positively lethal against mosquitos. We've found it to be much more effective than citronella torches.
About the only thing that mars this otherwise excellent device is the need to place it in front of the area you mean to protect. This would typically mean placing it away from a house, not next to it. Depending on your particular site, this can mean using extension cords, which come with their own set of safety issues. Happily, however, this is an extremely energy-efficient device, so it's definitely not going to break your electricity budget.
