The yardman came with high recommendation from the local Home Depot. The recommendation was based largely on the Kohler engine. The lawn mower is a no frills unit that starts without issue (no priming of the carb) and is solidly built. I have only used the mower a few times but, at this time, I have no complaints.

I bought this mower when it was at the presale price. Well, I got it sent to my home(Free Shipping was awesome!) and finally got the mower out to use over the weekend! Well, I could not be more pleased! At first turn of the key it started and I was off! It ran smooth and pretty quiet!
I did not use the bag and it mulched the leaves into little pieces! It works really well! I am very happy!Update...Here it is April 2010 and I uncovered the mower, put some fresh gasoline in it and turned the key......It cranked right away! I thought that I might have to baby it since it had not been used in several months!! No such thing!! I am so glad that I bought this and you will be also!

I bought this mower a year ago and am extremely disappointed. Though featured as mulch optional, there is no plug for the side discharge. I have tried everywhere to find one but can't. E-mails to Poulan are not replied to and the 1-800 number is a recording saying to call during normal hours (I called 2 hours after they were supposed to be open). Don't buy this thing.

Sun Joe MJ401E Mow Joe 14-Inch 12 Amp Electric Lawn Mower With Grass Bag Review

Sun Joe MJ401E Mow Joe 14-Inch 12 Amp Electric Lawn Mower With Grass Bag
Average Reviews:

My background:
1st time using mower, lawn has never been mowed before.
Experience:
Assembly is straight forward, simple and succint. After assembly, took it out for a test drive. I ended up mowing my whole lawn and had the urge to mow some of my neighbors lawn with it just because it was so fun. It has 3 settings high mid and low. High setting was already fairly low. The blade was clean cut and managed to get a relatively smooth cutting over the whole lawn. Using electric was also a plus. No gas smell and is a lot less noisy than my neighbors behemoth. The grass catcher is easy to detach and reattach. The handle bar has a safety button which gets kind of annoying because once you stop, you have to repress the button and start again.
Overall is very excellent. It is a little mower with great potential. Though don't try to run this through huge amounts of grass like a light saber. It won't work. Just take it slow and it'll do its job.
Highly recommend for first time buyer. Maybe second time buyers if you are looking for something small.

Black & Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 amp Corded Electric Lawn Mower Review

Black and Decker MM1800 18-Inch 12 amp Corded Electric Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just bought my first house and the yard was finally long enough to need a cut this weekend.
We have a pretty small lot, maybe 1/4 acre, and the backyard had almost no grass because of the way it was landscaped. I decided that I didn't need a big self-propelled mower, and originally through maybe I'd get a reel mower before I decided that keeping the blades in shape would be too much of a bother.
I did a little research and found that the MM875 had excellent reviews here on Amazon. This one, the MM1800, had no reviews, but from everything I see it's exactly the same but with a slightly narrower cutting diameter.
I ended up picking it up from Lowes, and then made another trip back after realizing that my extension cord was only 25' and not quite enough for my hard.
The mower is really very light and easy to set up in about 5 minutes. Starting it up is as easy as pulling the lever up against the handle, which I love because growing up, my dad's mower took 50 pulls to get it going.
The mower is very easy to push, and has an adjustable handle for different height preferences. The adjustment for the cutting height is also very well done, where you just have to move a single lever on one of the back wheels and it takes care of the whole mower.
I used the mower on mulching mode and didn't notice any piles of clippings anywhere; they were very very fine and evenly distributed. I have not tried the bag yet.
The only possible negative that I can bring up after this first mow is the cord, which is something that you should have gone into purchasing this mower knowing. I always used to mow the lawn twice around in a circle, then cut a diagonal down the center, and then follow that diagonal back and forth each direction. With the cord, this technique left me having to stop and adjust the cord a lot near the end of my mowing. In the future, I will do the two laps and then simply start at one end (either diagonally or horizontally) and mow progressively away from the outlet.
Pros:
No need for gas, and no battery to wear out
Quiet, compared to most gas mowers
Easy to push, comfortable to hold, very little vibrations in the handle
Easy to adjust the cutting height
Easy to turn on/start
Cons:
Cord can get in the way if you don't plan your cutting patternEDIT: I've now had the mower for a few months and used it 10 or more times, and I really have no complaints still. The only possible thing I can add is that I have found that the "plug" for when you're using mulching rather than bagging can get a significant amount of grass build-up on it as compared to some other mowers I've used, but I don't see that as an issue whatsoever.

Fast, powerful, and easy to start, the Black & Decker MM1800 18-Inch Electric Lawn Mower helps make yard work less of a chore. Thanks to its powerful electric motor, this high-performance mower will help you create and maintain a manicured lawn without the hassles, expense, and emissions of a gas-powered model.
Power and PerformanceThe MM1800 has a 12-amp motor to provide plenty of power for mulching or bagging the grass with the rear-bag assembly, and its improved blade design provides better cutting results.
Fast Starts and Quiet OperationThe MM1800 is incredibly easy to use. First, it starts instantly with a quick pull of the handle. And once started, its quiet operation--much quieter than gas mowers--means you can mow when you want to--without worrying about disturbing your neighbors.
Easy Adjustments and StorageThe one-touch height adjustment means you can quickly alter the cutting height of all four wheels at once with the pull of a single lever. And unlike traditional mowers, the MM1800 can be folded for upright or compact storage, making it ideal for those with limited space in the shed or garage.
Mulch or Rear-Bag CollectionThe mower is equipped for mulching the clippings back into your lawn, which provides a natural fertilizing effect. For easy grass collection, the MM1800 is designed with a rear bag that conveniently lifts through the handle for easy emptying.
Eco-Friendly Design Creates Zero EmissionsAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), gas powered engines from outdoor lawn equipment produce over one million tons of polluting air emissions per year. The MM1800, in contrast, produces zero harmful emissions in your yard.
The MM1800 is backed by a two-year warranty and lifetime deck warranty.

This mower seems good overall - I didnt realize it had electronic start and it arrived with everything except the keys! I tracked down the manufacturer and they sent me new ones in a week or so. And the pull start works without keys so I was able to mow. It was pretty easy to assemble but it sure weighs a lot. I have never had a power drive mower before so maybe they are all heavy. It doesnt always start on the first few tries but will after 4-5 pulls usually. It cuts very well and the bagger fits on nicely.

WORX WG712 13 amp 16-Inch Electric Lawn Mower Review

WORX WG712 13 amp 16-Inch Electric Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I confess. I was a bit skeptical, especially when I realized the Worx electric mower was only 16" wide-- I'm replacing a 20" Snapper. Even a little more skeptical when I pulled it out of the box-- I never, ever imagined a lawn mower could appear like something half space-ship, half cartoon in real life and still do a decent job-- but it looks very cool and modern! Then I noticed those familiar styled little plastic wheels that used to adorn my kids' Big Wheel trikes-- another strike. Finally, I flustered trying to "snap" together the 2-piece plastic grass-catcher.
But not to worry-- really, this is a "positive" review.
Once I got over all that and pulled the machine out onto my small urban front and back lawn, all doubts blew away.
The Worx 16-inch mower "works" like a dream (couldn't resist that). The 16" swath it cut was just right for my two 12x15' patches of grass. The 13 amps were perfect to cut my overgrown semi-wet grass without any trouble at all. I was relieved to discover the mower engine has a not-too-loud blower sound a little like a turbine. That seems to be less obnoxious than other electric mowers reviewed on Amazon. And the cutter deck height was simple to change with their single lever 6-height adjustment feature.
I stored the catcher untouched in my small garage. Using the mulcher attachment, most of the grass easily & cleanly worked its way back into the lawn with little obvious mess. About only thing that needs improvement here is use of a small black plastic clip to hold the attachement in. I'm sure that will eventually be lost.
As far as the "Big Wheels" go-- I wish it had real rubber ones, but so far the mower performance has eclipsed any complaints I might have had initially. I also am not impressed with their catcher-- I'd much rather see a 1-piece molded plastic version on future models.
So, as of its first use, I love my new mower and have happily laid my old smoking Snapper to rest. I'll report back after the summer has past with my final evaluation.

Swisher ST65022DXQ Trim Max 6.5 HP Trimmer Mower Review

Swisher ST65022DXQ Trim Max 6.5 HP Trimmer Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I flashed the plastic and my Swisher DXQ was delivered less than a week later. Having used it for several days now, I'll post my review here.
Some assembly is required. You'll put on the wheels, and the handle. I noted what another reviewer said here previously about the handle coming loose, so I used lock-tite on the handle nuts, and they have not come loose yet. Yes, the wheels are plastic, but remember this unit is under $400. Besides, you'll appreciate the lighter weight (no self-propel on this model).
The unit comes with a small can of Briggs oil, just enough to fill the crankcase, nice touch. Put in some gas and the engine cranked right up for me and ran well.
What I use it for: I have some open areas (septic fields, horse barn areas, etc) which tend to get overgrown with high thick weeds. I use the Swisher to 'pre-cut' those areas, going in and knocking down chest-high overgrowth to about 4 inches. After this, I follow up with the rider mower and put on the finish cut.
I have found the DXQ is adequate for this task. The 6.5HP Briggs flat-head (not OHV) engine is just about the smallest motor acceptable for this work. In very thick or high overgrowth you'll find this motor challenged with the the load, and you can even stall it if you push too fast. But if you slow down your pace a little it will pull through it fine. For most knee-high weeds and overgrowth, this motor is sufficient to take you through it at a steady slow walking pace (yeah, just like the TV commericals for the DR mowers :).
You won't make a smooth pretty cut with this machine. When you're done with an area that had substantial heavy overgrowth, it will look rough and overlaid with 'hay', like a tractor had gone over it with a bush-hog cutter. If this is what you want, you're good to go. For me, I wait a couple of hours for the hay and clippings to dry out, then I go over it with the rider mower. It's a lot easier on the mower than plowing through the high stuff straight off, and the results look beautiful.
The trimmer head spins clockwise, as viewed from operator's position. I have found it helps to 'outline' an area, then go around it in shrinking counter-clockwise loops. This lets you throw the cut debris to your right, away from the uncut area that you will cut on the next pass.

The machine is LOUD. There's the engine noise, plus a nearly ultrasonic noise from the trimmer line. You will definately want earplugs, or some form of hearing protection.
The size of the trimmer line is .130 or .150. I've found this size line blazes away through vegetation overgrowth, but it doesn't like trimming up against hard solid objects such as concrete foundations or wooden fence posts. Doing that makes flex too much and it breaks off quickly, back at the spindle. You'll want to carry some spare pieces of line in your pocket, for those instances. Or just keep the Swisher in the open overgrowth areas, and it'll be fine.

I removed the guard around the trimmer head, in order to let the machine 'breathe' better and more easily eject the cut vegetation. I'm not recommending this for everyone, but just saying it works better for me. The Swisher comes with a free set of eye protection goggles. You'll need them. Stuff flies everywhere.

Another reviewer mentioned the cooling air intake on top of the engine getting clogged, and this does happen. This Briggs engine cover has a fixed stationary grille over the air intake. With all the debris blowing around, a lot of it will get stuck on that grille and it will reduce airflow into the cooling fins. Other Briggs engine models have the grille attached to the flywheel, so it's spinning around at engine speed, and tends to be more self-cleaning. That would have been helpful here. So every so often you'll want to reach down with your (gloved) hand and brush debris away from the intake grille. It comes off with two small phillips screws, so remove it and clean it out good every few hours.
This is a hard-working engine when you're cutting substantial overgrowth, so it goes through a tank of gas pretty quickly. In addition, I'd suggest doing about a 5 hour oil change interval for the same reason. The machine gets dirty. Keep a brush handy for removing debris from the air cleaner, carb, gas cap, etc.
When you're buying equipment like this, it's important to analyze your needs honestly, and choose the appropriate machine for the task. With that said, the DXQ is basically a decent ENTRY LEVEL machine. It has the smallest size engine acceptable, no electric start, and no self propel. It's not going to have the power or features of it's big brothers. (That is, if you're planning to knock down multiple acres of heavy overgrowth, or have challenging terrain to deal with, you maybe should be looking at a bigger machine.) But you're not going to be paying $1500 to $2000 for this machine either. Just 400 bucks lands the DXQ on your doorstep in about week. My particular needs are to control of seasonal and occasional overgrowth of smaller (sub-acre) areas. And the DXQ does that job quite well.
I found the other reviews here helpful in letting me know just what I was getting into. Based on that and the attractive price tag compared to all the other models, I felt confident in ordering this unit.
After using the Swisher DXQ for a few days, learning its strengths and limitations, I actually found myself having too much fun using it. Those bad boy gangsta weeds had tormented me long enough, and now they were goin' down before me. I was feeling a little like Al Pachino in 'Scarface': "You want a piece of this?? Well say Hello to MY LITTLE FRIEND!"

Enjoy and be safe.

The Swish 6.5 HP Trim Max trimmer mower is designed to reduce back stress associated with hand-held mowers, yet it provides three to four times the power for effectively trimming overgrown edges and mowing high weeds and lawns. Equipped with a 6 HP Briggs & Stratton engine, the Trim Max maneuvers rugged landscapes and manicured lawns with ease. While many other standing trimmer mowers feature sharp steel blades, the Trim Max uses a .155-inch diameter cutting line for greater safety. Users can adjust the line's tension belt for better performance and extended belt life. The trimmer mower cuts a wide 22-inch swath and automatically turns off when idle, saving fuel and adding further safety. Powdercoat paint covers all metal parts for greater durability. The trimmer head is located on the left side of the mower while 14-inch wheels allow the trimmer mower to turn corners deftly while providing clearance in rougher terrain. To prevent debris from clustering around the machine, Swisher built a debris guard onto the rear of the trimmer mower. The Trim Max also benefits from easy care as all bearings are sealed, so there's no need for lubrication. The simple task of replacing the cutting line requires no tools, and the trimmer mower runs on regular unleaded gasoline. What's in the Box Mower, one container of engine oil, replacement trimmer line, and protective goggles.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I'm out mowing, I'm thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it. So needless to say, I've thought a lot about this. Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:
1. It's cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back. It's probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.
2. It's light. A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they're so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn't need to be self-propelled. You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.
3. It's easy to start. No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start. Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.
4. It's quiet. Well, okay, it's not THAT quiet. But it's quieter than most.
5. It doesn't smell. The lawn doesn't smell like gas fumes after you're all done.
6. It's better for the environment. Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.
Sounds great so far, right? Well, before you click that "Add to Shopping Cart" button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:
1. The cord. Yep, there's no battery here, so you're attached to your house's electricity the entire time. In practice, I haven't found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it's easy to manage. But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore. If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.
(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you're choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)
2. The optional mulching bag is small. If I'm collecting my grass clippings, I'll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run. It gets to be pretty annoying. As a result, I usually just let the clippings return to the lawn, which is better for the lawn anyway, even if it doesn't look as pretty.
And there you have it. Six reasons to buy it, and two not to. You'll have to make your own decision. As for myself, I've been very happy with my purchase thus far, and will probably make my next mower a Black and Decker electric model as well.

When the Item was received, several small parts were missing. After contacting the Swisher company, I was assured that the missing parts would be provided at no cost. That promise was fulfilled.
However,, I have the following comments concerning the design of this machine: (These comments are keyed to the Swisher Owner's Manual, 10696 Rev-06-32).
1.The pull start is located on the engine. Most modern lawn machines with a 'handle safety squeeze bar' are configured with the pull handle mounted within easy reach of the handle.
2. The machine does not have any method of acheiving accurate cutting height, other than the operators ability to judge the distance between the cutting cords and the ground. The plastic threaded roller (item 10) is inadequate and the distance from the ground should be adjustable by the operator.
3. Operation of the machine causes cut material to pack into the space between the rear drive pulley (item 2) and the rear cover (item 5).
4. The engine 'cooling' design is self defeating because as material is cut it is sucked onto the top engine grill over the air flow intake and prevents air from flowing over the engine. That is not good and must prevent adequate engine cooling.
These changes in the aforementioned flaws would make your machine a much more usable item.
It would be nice if you responded to my comments.

An ideal back-saving alternative to heavy handheld gas trimmers, the Swisher 6-horsepower standard trimmer is three heavy-duty yard machines in one. The trimmer's extra-wide 22-inch cutting swath rivals that of most lawnmowers, while its user-friendly design offers unsurpassed, precision trimming, and edging performance. Equipped with a powerful 12-volt starter for easy and reliable start-ups, the trimmer also features 14-inch ball bearing wheels for plenty of clearance and smooth rolling over rough terrain. A 6-horsepower, Briggs and Stratton quantum engine offers optimal power and long life for all types of domestic trimming and edging.Additionally, a tough, .155-inch diameter cutting line provides ample cutting strength for weeds and thick overgrowth, and the trimmer automatically shuts off when the handle is released for added safety. The trimming head also pivots to follow the contour of the ground, swiveling left to right for easy cutting around obstacles and hard to reach areas. And, when it's time to edge, the head rotates 90-degrees for touching up boarders around sidewalks, driveways, and flowerbeds. The cut line is easily replaced, too, without the use of tools. The trimmer comes with a 2-year warranty on materials and workmanship.
