Venta LW44 Air Humidifier and Purifier All-in-one Review

Update on January 15, 2008:
Yesterday, the motor in my Venta unit began making a grinding sound after nearly six year of flawless operation. I called Venta customer service this afternoon. After wating a rather long time on hold, I was connected to a very pleasant man, George, who asked me to put the phone next to the motor so he could hear the noise. I did, and he did.
Without a moment's hesitation, George said he would have a new motor shipped at no cost to me, and that delivery could be expected within 5 - 7 business days.
It's always a pleasant surprise to find a company standing unquestioningly behind their warranty. If only more understood that's all it takes to create loyal customers.

Update on September 17, 2007:
I'm pleased to report , my review, below, is still true in every detail. This product has been a terrific investment.
*****
I live in a desert~like New York City apartment and have owned my Venta Air Washer for almost exactly two years. During this time it has been operating on the "high" setting, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The Air Washer lives up to all of the manufacturer's claims.
The Air Washer is a product of fanatical German engineering, over~design and bullet~proof construction, which accounts for it's rather grotesque price. However, I have owned products of inferior engineering and construction that have had to be replaced after one or two seasons. It is obvious I will own my Air Washer for many years to come.
The principles of operation could not be more simple (it's like a High School science project developed into a luxury product):
1) A fan blows room air straight down into a reservoir of water.
2) In this reservoir of water, a few dozen disks are slowly rotating to multiply the surface area that is wet.
3) Because you are blowing air onto a enlarged wet surface you are multiplying the rate of evaporation.
4) Humidified air is exhausted out of the Air Washer through vents in the side.
THIS WORKS.
On the "high" setting the water reservoir needs to be refilled daily in my apartment (this is highly dependent on your local weather or heating cycle). I end up carrying a couple gallons of water to the device or carrying the device to the bathtub and then back to its spot in my livingroom.
The design of the Air Washer is "neutral." It sits unobtrusive and un~noticed in a corner. It is nearly silent. It is built like a tank: It would be a challenge to damage this product on purpose.
Why not Five Stars?
The Venta Air Washer consumes expendables. You need a water treatment solution to prevent mineral deposits forming on the rotating disks mentioned above (weekly). AND you need a periodic cleaning solution to remove deposits that develop pn the bottoms and walls of the reservoir. I have tried operating the Air Washer without these things. They are required for optimal performance.
Like the device itself, the Venta treatment and cleaning solutions work perfectly and simply. But, THE EXPENDIBLES ARE EXPENSIVE! Assume youy will spend US$50.00 per year.
Also, you would think that for a company selling a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR humidifier, the Venta aroma therapy scents would smell a bit less like a Central American bordello (not that I've ever seen one of those). Skip these even if they're free samples.
If you want the very best at any price, buy this product.
I am not affiliated with either the manufacturer or Amazon.

Air that feels good must be properly humidified. Heated air dries out the mucous membranes (weakening your resistance to viral infections). Overheated dry air makes you feel tired and listless. Your skin dries out, your plants suffer and your wooden furniture starts to show cracks. The Venta-Airwasher is ideal to reduce chapped lips, stuffed up noses, sore throats, and dried out eyes. Protect your valuable wood furniture and floors as well as musical instruments from drying out. Dry indoor air is difficult to clean; every movement causes millions of particles to be stirred up and become airborne. However, humidification keeps a large number of airborne particles down on the floor; making the two-in-one humidifier/purifier? more effective than air purifiers alone. The Venta Airwasher humidifies the air while simultaneously drawing in and removing dust, pollen and other contaminating particles down to 10 microns ( 10/1000 mm ) in size from the air. Easy maintenance. No filters to change or clean or cumbersome containers to fill. The simple design and convenient access to the tank allow for easy cleaning. 3 gal. tank capacity. Measures 16.5" x 11.8" x 13". 3 speeds. Humidifies/purifies up to 720 sq. ft. 10 Year Limited Warranty. Made in Germany

This is not as big as it looks in the picture. It is tiny! You have to heat up the water yourself separately and then pour it into this piece of junk. There is no electric heating. Stay away from this.

Grossan HP100 Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus Irrigator. Review

Grossan HP100 Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus Irrigator.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife has suffered from cronic sinusitis for all of her adult life. She is an international flight attendant and spends a considerable amount of time breathing the rarified air onboard planes. It really makes her already cronic problem even worse.
She has been getting allergy shots for years and with no real improvement, she was getting very discouraged. She can easily go through a half of a box of tisseus a day blowing her nose and when allergy seasons arrive, she is a total disaster.
I started researching her condition on the Internet and discovered all the wonderful results people were getting with nasal irrigation. I found several discussions about the Grossan Hydro Pulse Irrigator in an allergy newsgroup. I decided to take the plunge and buy one for her. I decided that the cost (not insignificant at almost $100) was ultimately negligible if it could provide any relief from her condition.
The unit arrived and she immediately started to use it. Believe me, this thing is not quiet by any stretch of the imiganation. Especially in the "pause" mode, it is very loud, much louder than an electric shaver or electric toothbrush for instance. Nonetheless, the sound is not that big of a deal, after all it is results we are looking for and my wife quickly decided that it was helping alleviate her sinusitis symptoms. In fact, after about a month of use, she decided to discontinue her allergy shots with no ill effects so far. The only other thing she is doing in addition to the nasal irrigation is to use fluticasone propionate nasal spray.
So the concept of nasal irrigation has proven its worth, at least as far as my wifes' condition is concerned.
Now let me talk about the Grossan machine. It is an over-priced piece of junk. The first unit we received began to leak internally after only a week of use. During and after each use, there would be a large puddle of saline solution leaking out of the bottom of the machine. My wife followed the usage instructions precisely. When we called the company to inquire about the leaking problem, we were grilled relentlessly by the person answering the phone. We were asked whether we used un-iodized salt (we were), whether we were disiinfecting the machine every week with diluted clorox (we were) and other questions pertaining to the usage and care of the machine. As I said, my wife followed the instructions in the manual precisely so we were definitely not contributing to the problem. The machine itself was the problem. The company representative stated rather coldly that "we sell hundreds of these machines every day and if there was a problem with the machine we would certainly have lots of other complaints about it." The implication was quite clear, we were being blamed for the machines failure.
Ultimately, the company said they would send a brand new replacement machine under the terms of the warranty and that we needn't return the defective machine. So we were initially quite happy about that.
The second machine arrived a few days later and started to leak in the same way as the previous machine. So this time we call the company and they tell us to send the machine back to them for repair...not replacement... and that it will take 6-8 weeks. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Since I still had the old machine, we hooked it back up and my wife still uses it while we wait for the replacement machine to be "fixed". In the meantime I decided to take the machine apart to have a little look-see inside. Wow, what an instructive little journey that was. You would not believe how cheaply made the machine is. It consists of basically a cheap electric impulse motor and a cheesy nylon pump that propels the water from the tank through the tube/nozzle. It is easy to see why the machine leaks once you see how it is put together. In fact I don't really understand how it could not leak. It would seem that they are destined to leak. So we wait for the "fixed" machine to arrive while the old machine continues to pour saline water all over our counter each time it is used.
In conclusion, nasal irrigation could have a profoundly positive result on your sinusitis condition but the Grossan machine is a piece of junk and I would definitely look at a standard oral irrigation unit and use a nasal tip on it. Or you could also use a non-mechanized neti pot which can be bought at CVS for about $12.
A little Google searching will reveal a chinese made oral irrigation machine called the Oratec ViaJet Pro, selling for half the price of the Grossan machine. The Oratec ViaJet Pro sells for $45. Draw your own conclusion. Buyer beware.

Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135 Review

Air-O-Swiss AOS Ultrasonic Humidifier - 7135

(More customer reviews)
I got this to humidify my kids room. Previously we had been using the old vick vaporizer but it only put out for about 6 hours and had some other issues with getting the mineral content of the water just right.
Anyway this is without a doubt the best humidfier I've ever used. Setup was a little confusing at first (where little parts went. The tube hole through the tank was a little disconcerting but after I understood its function I saw it wasn't going to slosh water everywhere.
For a humidfier it has a amazing number of options.
Warm Mist vs Cool
I had always used "warm mist" but my wife wanted "cool mist", this was the only one that had both. Warm and cool are relative terms however. When I think of warm mist I think of the Vicks which can scald you if you get to close. It heats the room up in operation. This device the warm mist is sort of warm. It takes a few minutes to warm up and if you put your hand over the output you can feel its warm but not hot. It goes to warm by pre-heating the water before it hits the vaporizer. In cool mist it just vaporizes.
Output-
You have two output controls, relative humidity and mist volume for lack of a better term. Think of it as fan speed (but no fan)You set the humidity and it spits out water as needed. I don't know where the sensor is but the position of the output nozzel can really affect its reading.
The tank seems to hold enough water for 24 hours of output or 2-3 nights of use. The output is plenty adequate for a bedroom.
Controls-
Lots of controls on/off, heat/no heat, humidity, output, timer, auto mode and more. This is the big difference betwen this and the lower end model. Someone finally figured out how to put a timer on a humidifier (imagine that). So it runs as many hours as you set it. The sleep mode sets all settings automatically and runs 8 hours. I love it.
Noise-
What noise, this thing is silent. No bubbling or hissing or fan noises.
Filling the tank-
Take it out, flip it, unscrew the deminerlization cartridage and fill er up. Not the most stable but it works. Carry handle makes it easy to take back.
Its everything you could possibaly want in a humidifier. Low maintence, easy enough to fill, quite, lots of settings for any need.
Beats the heck out of the old vicks and some fan based whicking mold catching filter units I've used. The closet thing I ever had was a drugstore one that spit out the good stuff for 15 minutes and then broke. This is a quality product (and price) and should last (I've had it 2 weeks at the time of writing). It may be expensive but it does what you want and will outlast many of the others. If you've got the money its worth it.

Austin Air Allergy Machine Jr. Review

Austin Air Allergy Machine Jr.

This is the first time I've purchased an air purifier not based on the cadr, so I was a little nervous. But it is great. From day one, the air in my bedroom has smelled very fresh. In addition, I purchased this because of a potential mold problem in my apartment. Since using it, I have experienced less symptoms than before. I like it so much, I'm thinking of purchasing another one for my second floor because the old Hunter I have isn't sufficient.
I would recommend this air purifier to anyone, especially if you have allergies. The only reason I didn't give this a 5-star rating is because it is a little noisy on high (although for normal uses, it probably wouldn't need to always be run on high like I'm doing because of my mold problem). Also, you have to have some place out of the way to put it as it must be set 8 inches from the wall with the air output facing away from the wall.
