After this percolator stopped working, we were instructed to send it to Dulalit's service center for repair (Electra Craft, Inc.) Customer service at the repair center was very unprofessional -- they would tell us the package was shipping out to us, and nothing would arrive. It was only after persistent calling that they finally shipped the percolator to us and it arrived in worse condition. It took them four months to return the percolator to us. They refused to replace the percolator because we owned it for more than 30 days. Amazon was very helpful and understanding and assisted us with a refund.
We unfortunately own two of these percolators and when the lid broke on the second one, I had to contact Electra Craft, again. They were able to provide the part, a simple stainless steel lid, for $25.00 plus shipping and handling! I'm sure their other replacement parts are overpriced as well!

Hi all~ Please read the latest November 15, 2010 update below my initial review.ORIGINAL REVIEW-- Just wanted to give a quick counter balance to the sole review here.
This is our third 30+ cup urn purchased in the past 3 years or so. We received our coffee maker within 2 days of ordering using Amazon Prime.
The Maxi-Matic itself appears very attractive. We purchased it based on the insulating factor included in its design. We primarily use our coffee makers as hot water units for tea and french press. They run 24 hours a day under frequent use. We do not plan to use it as a coffee percolator.
Our household was happy to see the unit heats water to a higher temperature than many coffee makers and so far it seems to maintain the hot temp under its warming cycle. It is plenty hot enough to steep tea and coffee in our presses.
We did not find the machine to be noisy at all. In fact I think it is quieter than the Continental Electrics and West Bend brands we had previously.
I should also mention we can actually keep another 8-10 cups of water in the tank when not using the coffee pan.
We only buy stainless steel now after reading articles that suggest aluminum coffee makers leech more minerals and/or side-products that may be harmful to health.
I cannot speak to the previous reviewer's complaint about the percolating stem. To me it looks the same as most I've seen.
We purchased directly from Amazon so we are reassured that our 30 day return guarantee will give us sufficient time to see if there are any kinks. I'll report back if we find any serious ones.
-------------
UPDATE November 15, 2010-- Spigot broke off our 2nd urn. Sadly, I have to change my rating now from 3 stars to 1 star and ask that you DO NOT buy this product.
-------------
UPDATE September 5, 2010-- Our 2nd urn is still working. The handle seems to be holding up a little better than our last one, however we've noticed this urn doesn't keep the water as hot as our previous one which is a little disappointing. Today I'm feeling this is at 3 stars over the long term..
-------------
UPDATE May 10, 2010-- Sadly, our spigot handle broke off. It is clearly a weakness for this unit. Actually, a couple of months ago, half of the handle portion broke off, but we could still manage to use it without too much trouble. A few days ago the rest of the spigot handle broke vertically in half, separating & falling off, rendering the urn unusable. We've had it just about 5-6 months.
The urn heats so well though compared to the 2 or 3 others we've had- perfectly for a large hot water service pot for tea station, that we are ordering another. Figured the cost for mailing the unit back under warranty probably is not worthwhile. May do it later to have a back up.
We will reinforce the spigot on the new pot.
Down to 2 stars from 4.
----------------
UPDATE Nov 29, 2009-- Continues to work very well. Maintains a hot heat through the day. No issues to make me dissatisfied at this point.

This coffee maker WAS great! Now, less than a year later, it switches from Brew mode to Keep Warm ("Ready") mode prematurely before coffee is half brewed. It now delivers "coffee-stained" water that is not too warm. I think the thermostat has gone south because "Ready" light comes on rather quickly now and brewing stops abruptly. Good while it lasted; wasted money in retrospect.

Hamilton Beach 40540 Brew Station 40-Cup Coffee Urn, Silver

This urn is supremely functional, with no bells and whistles. It advertises brewing times of 45 seconds per cup, but I've found that it's closer to the minute per cup advertised by other models: you'll buy back very little setup time with this model (heating 2 gallons of water took 35 minutes for example). Plus, like all other coffee urns, this one sings its moany little song while brewing, so if there's a chance it might be a distraction, you'll need to plug it in ahead of time so it's done brewing by the time the main event occurs, or you'll need to brew in another room and move it to the buffet table once it's hot. The one-handed dispensing works fine if the cup being dispensed into is solid, like a coffee mug, but common sense is confirmed that paper cups are not sturdy enough to depress the button without collapsing. In order to dispense one-handed with a paper cup, you have to push the button with your knuckles, which puts your fingers in the path of potentially hot liquids. Finally, and this is something that there's no way to know before reading the owner's manual, there's a little strainer right above where the liquid comes out. The owner's manual warns not to tip the urn while dispensing in order to prevent clogging of this strainer with coffee grounds. That's all well and good, except that due to the placement of the dispensing nozzle, the coffee becomes inaccessible when the level goes below about 10 cups--that's 1/4 of the total brew for a full pot!! It's this waste factor that resulted in the 4 stars instead of 5. For its price, it's a tidy little machine--the nozzle is particularly good at preventing drips. However, I'd rather clean up dribble from a lower-placed nozzle than have to find a way to decant 10 cups of coffee.

The Hamilton Beach BrewStation 40 Cup urn offers one-hand dispensing, so there is no need to put down a buffet or party plate to fill up a cup of coffee. In a busy buffet line, that means cups can be filled faster, saving time and reducing crowding. Disposable cups are never a problem, either - the dispensing button was designed to work with foam as well as classic ceramic cups. For added convenience, the dispensing area has a higher cup clearance than most urns and the drip tray removes for easy cleaning. The last drops of a 40-cup coffee urn have rarely tasted as good until now. In the BrewStation urn, a powerful center heater brews the entire tank quickly (45 seconds per cup versus the normal 60 seconds). Once brewed, the center heater shuts down and a gentle, keep-warm heater maintains a perfect temperature without scorching the coffee. Coffee tastes great longer, from the first cup to the last.

I do not understand what has happened in the coffee maker industry. It seems as if every coffee appliance I buy fails. This one is no exception. I bought this one only because most of the reviews praised it. Now I am sure that the reviews are phony and must be posted by the manufacturer. There is no control over the time of percolation which for whatever reason has been designed to be too short. The coffee comes out weak especially if you try to make less than 12 cups, the water just doesn't make it through the strainer for less cups??? The manual suggests using 20 spoons for 12 cups of strong coffee. At this rate I will essentially be using double the coffee grinds to make the same amount of coffee as I did with a much older Faberware I had and the coffee is still weak. The new faberwares are just as bad as everything else manufactured these days. The reviews and the item description also touts that this coffee percolator has a glass knob. This is an outright lie, it is plastic!!!! I was initially pleased with the design although I feel it is made with a lighter guage metal than it should be. I would gladly pay double for this product if it worked. Don't buy it, it is another coffee maker dud!!!!!

Brewing from 4 to 12 cups of coffee, this classic stainless-steel percolator offers an elegant way to serve coffee to dinner guests. Its ready-to-serve light indicates when coffee is ready to enjoy, while the detachable cord provides the ability to serve fresh perked coffee right at the table without any hassle. Other useful features include a precision drip-free spout, an easy-grip knob on the unit's lid, and a stay-cool bottom that allows the percolator to sit safely on any surface without scarring. The appliance combines present-day technology with the retro look of a '50s kitchen for creating a perfect compliment to any kitchen decor. I have owned several Hamilton Beach Coffee Urns in the past 20 years and I'm a pretty heavy duty user. I've preferred them in the past because of all the brands I've ever owned, they keep the water the hottest. They don't last the longest (the spigot usually develops a leak), but that's the trade-off considering the price. My current objection has to do with the plastic cover on top, and it's become a real health hazard. The cover on mine started to disintegrate into tiny black pieces that fell into the water. If you're making coffee, you won't even notice it at first (I only noticed it because I use my urn to brew large quantities of plain hot water).

Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker Review

Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, the reason we bought this is because, in general, percolators make great tasting coffee. They can turn even the worst quality beans into a good cup of coffee. Initially, the Presto lived up to our expectations. And after doing the following, it is once again making great cups of coffee.
Tip #1 - Grind your coffee using the appropriate setting.
After some usage, we would at times get a mouthful of grinds. We realized it was important to use the percolator setting on the coffee grinder at the supermarket. Since then, an occasional coffee grind finds its way into our cup.
Tip #2 - Clean the filter basket with a brush.
Despite cleaning the pot before each usage, the coffee was gradually getting weaker each day. We then realized that the holes in the bottom of the filter basket were clogged. We could not unclog them using a sponge so I started poking each one individually with a toothpick before deciding there was no way we would have the time or patience to do it every day. So, we tried a brush with plastic bristles and, within seconds, the basket was completely unclogged. So, we bought a small brush with a long handle and use it to clean the filter basket and the bottom of the pot.

Paula Deen 8-Cup Stovetop Percolators Review

Paula Deen 8-Cup Stovetop Percolators

In seeing so many nasty reviews about this little perk pot, I am putting in my two cents. First of all - What do all these one and two star folks think this percolator is supposed to do for them?? Take them to Starbucks... I mean, seriously......
The reason I bought this percolator was because I had tried some stove top espresso makers, which clearly made much richer and fully flavored coffee, the only problem was that is was much too strong. It was evident something about the water and steam passing though all the grounds fully, and very slowly was making all the difference in the world. So I bought this percolator to see if this could make a richer home brew - that was not as strong as espresso. Indeed this old fashioned process adds to the flavor and if properly perked - your coffee will turn out just fine. The coffee is so rich that I save the left overs for iced coffee in the late afternoons during the summer.
Best thing to do is follow the instructions - which say to let the water come to a boil then turn it to low heat. Yes, this means you need to stand there by the stove - . Yes, if you over cook it, it will taste bitter. Yes, if you put too much water in the percolator it will over flow onto your stove. However, if you fill the percolator and coffee basket half way, all should go well.
The design is nice and this is a very sturdy item. Would have been very helpful if this came with a silicon grip in this day and age. Yes, you have to use a pot holder, just like way back when. Also, the orange is close to a bright red, the red is a very dark red, and the blue is nearly an aqua green.
Would be five stars but for the lack of a silicon grip. Nice job Ms. Paula Deen. Thank you!

Farberware 50124 Classic Yosemite Stainless Steel Percolator Review

Farberware 50124 Classic Yosemite Stainless Steel Percolator
Average Reviews:

Perked coffee is old school, to be sure, but a well-made cup of percolated brew is robust and satisfying in a way that drip coffee isn't. Not only does the percolation process provide a deeper and fuller mouth, I think, but a percolator, bubbling away, is a lovely sight and sound.
If you don't like perked coffee, don't bother with any percolator. But if you are interested in something other than drip brew, consider this Farberware percolator. I'm not one to ooh and ahh over design, but this is a darned handsome piece of kitchen equipment. Take a look and the large picture and I will spare you the adjectives. :)
The stainless steel construction makes it sturdier and heftier than thin-metal percolators you might buy in the camping gear section of a chain store. While the name "Yosemite" evokes coffee bubbling over a campfire, I'd probably not use this on a wood fire to avoid blackening. I mean, this thing really is shiny and pretty. But as heavy-duty as it is, perhaps it would clean up well.
It's a capacious pot, making eight cups of coffee. The interior basket and rod are well made, fitting tightly together and clamping in place with the lock-down lid. It makes more coffee than my old electric percolator, but it does take up a burner on the stove-top.
Lastly, should you buy this unit, remember: Perked coffe may be good, but it's a danged sight hotter than drip brew. Of course, you'll probably figure that out for yourself...

I am pretty particular about coffee. I like to gind my own beans and have never used a perc coffee pot in the past. But we were having a huge family gathering and I needed a lot of coffee.
I ordered this Party Perk machine and when it came in I almost returned it because it seemed so flimsy, but I figured I'd give it a chance.
I'm glad I did. All the information I read on the Internet about coffee said that perc'd coffee is not very good because the water is boiled and constantly recirculated through the grounds and this does not equate to how to achieve the best tasting coffee.
Well, while this was not the BEST coffee I have ever had, the coffee was none-the-less very good.I used Berkley and Jensen ground coffee (available at BJ's Wholesale club)and I could not have been more pleased with the results from this Party Perk. I used a little more than 2-1/2 cups of ground coffee for the full 42 cups and the information I read about expecting the pot to brew the coffee at one cup per minute seemed pretty accurate.
There were a lot of compliments on how good the coffee tasted. It did not taste burned, even after being kept warmed in the pot for a few hours.
I cannot comment on the durability of the machine as I haven't had it that long. My parents saw this pot and remarked that they had the same one for many many years before they gave it away and never had the first bit of trouble with it.

Farberware Percolators Review

Farberware Percolators

I've happilly enjoyed Farberware's larger 20-cup electric percolator that is still brewing some wonderful coffee after 10 years. All I had to replace was the electric cord, which petered out after 3 years.
I've had this model for a few months and think that it will also last a long, long time (don't know about the cord, though). This machine looks terrifically retro, is easy to clean and keeps the coffee consistenly hot for hours. After tasting coffee here, you won't go back to your old drip machine.
My advice to you is:
1. Don't overfill the basket with grinds, because it's very easy to make a STRONG cup of coffee with this. We like strong coffee, so this is a good thing.
2. Clean it w/soap & water as soon as you are finished with it to protect the pot. I also clean it out with Dip-It every 6 weeks or so to remove the coffee stains from the inside and make it shiny and new-looking.
3. At most supermarkts you can buy little paper disc filters that sit in the bottom of the jar and keep the smaller grinds from falling into the water. It also filters out alleged carcinogens that are not removed by traditional percolators or coffee presses.
I would actually give this 4.5 stars, because sadly, these newer models are now made in China rather than the Farberware factory in the Bronx.

Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker Review

Bialetti 6800 Moka Express 6-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker
Average Reviews:

Every family in Italy owns one of these machines. Here are a few tips:
1. In Italy this is NOT called an espresso machine, but a Moka machine. An espresso is what you would drink in bar made with a steam or high pressure machine with the crema on top.
2. Smaller size Moka machine tend to make better coffee.
3. Never wash the Moka with detergents, just rinse it under tap water
4. You've gotta use it often for a good coffee.
5. If you haven't use it in a while, make a weak coffee ("lungo") and discard
6. DO NOT put the MOka in the dishwasher.
7. Use drinking water. Avoid tap water especially if very chlorinated
8. Never compress the coffee.
9. For a strong coffee fill the filter with ground coffee and make a small cupola that slightly protrudes beyond the rim. Do not press down.
10. For best coffee, heat at very low heat. It's ok if it takes 10min.
11. As soon as coffee reaches the top, remove from heat
12. Do not let the coffee boil
13. Use good quality coffee, not too strong, medium grind (try Illy for a good commercial brand)
14. Sip while still hot, enjoy!

I got my Bialetti 6-cup about a week and a half ago. It took me a while to learn all the tricks of the trade, so I thought I'd piece it together here.
1. Rinse out the pot, preferably with warm water and not with any abrasive cloth.
2. Fill the bottom of the pot with water to the line. If you go over it, the pot might explode. Seriously.
3. Fill the middle filter with ground espresso roast (dark) beans. Grind them a little bit finer then auto drip grind, to about the grain of fine sand. Level off the filter, and put it in the pot.
4. Screw on the top hard. Don't use the handle to screw it, because it could snap off.
5. My stove goes LO, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, HI; I usually set it between 3 and 5. It takes 5-ish minutes to finish. Take it off the stove when you hear it gurgling and sputtering.
Things I've learned:
*If it's going to be mainly you drinking the espresso, consider a 3-cup. I usually make a double cappuccino in the morning, and the rest of my family uses no more than 3 shots total. I stick the left-over in a Tupperware container and refrigerate it (a practice sure to make Italians shudder) to mix with milk and sugar when I come home from work.
*You can open the top to watch the espresso come out, because it is really cool. Just be sure to close it before it starts sputtering, because it goes all over.
*Read an article in a magazine or something while you wait--just don't wander off, because the time between when it first comes out and when it's finished is brief.
Moka pots make great 'espresso,' plus they're cheap and quick. From what I've gathered, Bialetti's the best maker. So I definitely recommend this.
