QuicKutz SILHOUETTE-1 Digital Craft Cutter Review

QuicKutz SILHOUETTE-1 Digital Craft Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both a basic Cricut machine and a Silhouette. Each has pros and cons that I thought I would share here for anyone trying to make a decision about which one to purchase.
Silhouette--
Pros:
--You can cut ANY design in almost ANY size. You are only limited by your imagination and your computer skills. I have been having fun downloading clip art from the internet, and then using Photoshop Elements to break apart each piece that I want to do in a different paper color. You can save these pieces as .jpgs and import them into the Silhouette software. If you don't know Photoshop, you can use the pre-made electronic clip art from Quickutz or from other designers who do Silhouette files.
--Blade seems to last longer than the Cricut version
--Mat seems to last longer than the Cricut version
--Since you can use any True Type font on your computer, your titles are virtually unlimited. When I'm scrapbooking, I like being able to cut my title out of the same font that I use for journaling since it has a nice clean look. The ability to do any font on your computer makes purchasing the Silhouette a great idea.
Cons:
--I am a computer analyst and so the learning curve for me wasn't too bad on the software. But for someone who doesn't use any kind of computer, it will take a while to learn this. Typing words for titles, etc. is the easiest part.
--The machine is noisy. So much so that when I made my first cut I thought I was breaking it!
--They could improve the "depth gauges." These little pieces of plastic haven't broken yet, but they SEEM like they could break or easily get lost.
Cricut
Pros:
--so, sooooo easy to use
--a nice selection of cartridges
--blades and mats are cheaper to buy than Silhouette
Cons:
--limited to the designs made by Cricut
--limited in size of dies if you own the basic model. The Expression addresses this issue because it has a larger format, but the Expression also costs twice as much as either of these products.
I've stopped buying Cricut font carts because my Silhouette can do so much in this arena. But Cricut shapes are still worth it because, again, they are so easy to use.
Hope this helps!

I bought this thing a few years ago and I chose it because it was XYRON: a name I thought to be reputable. The software is NOT user-friendly, for starters. You better be pretty software savvy! The cutting mats don't last very long, either...then you have to replace them at $20 PLUS shipping (because...good luck finding some local store that does anything Wishblade....rumor has it Xyron isn't very nice to smaller stores).
The next problem I ran into was the compatibility issue when I went from XP to Vista. DID NOT WORK and Xyron did NOT offer updates. WTF!
Purchased a Windows 7 machine and thought I would give it a whirl. Nope. BUT...there IS an update from Xyron, but you have to pay $100 for the software. SERIOUSLY. When you fork out close to $400 for a machine, you shouldn't have to pay $100 for a patch!! UNREAL.
Next time, I am going Silhouette. They offer ALL updates for FREE from their website. It's a concept, I am telling you!

I've had this product for a year and a half. It takes some work to become comfortable with designing and cutting files, but well worth the effort. Lots of support from yahoo Groups and other web sites. Lots of FREE files shared, too. Xyron customer service leaves a lot to be desired, however. Also, I cannot use this with my new Vista computer. Drivers are available for 32-bit Vista, but not 64-bit. Apparently Xyron isn't making new drivers any time soon. Now I have an expensive machine that I love, but cannot use.

I love my Silhouette SD and have used it so much I needed to replace the cutting mat. Much to my surprise, when I received the mats (CR09309K), the stickiness was so strong that I couldn't get the paper off the mat without tearing. The response from Silhouette was that I must have ordered the wrong product. However, nowhere do they say pick the "stickiness" level you want.

The Inspiration cuts almost any shape imaginable...and you never need to buy a cartridge. You can draw your own, clip an image from the internet or cut just about any digital image you already own. As an example, I was able to clip a 3 color college logo from the internet. I used the Inspriation software to break the logo into its respective parts, sized the logo and then cut each piece out in the appropriate color. The result was a 3D logo in the size I needed for my project. Couldn't do that with a Cricut!
It was easy to install and set up the machine and took very little time to get to know the software. The software has all the functions I was looking for to cut out images but still needs a bit of work to make it even better. Sometimes I wind up manipulating images in PSP and then moving them into Inspiration to size and cut.
As for type, it comes with many fonts and also works with all true types fonts you have loaded on your PC so your imagination is the only limit. It's so easy to meld type into groups so you don't need to deal with indivdual letters.
While the accessories (mats, blades etc) are available only from online retailers such as Amazon or Pazzles.com right now, the Cricut mats work just fine and the new Cricut deep cut blade seems to be the same as you'd purchase from Pazzles. As I understand it, Pazzles makes the Cricut's for Provo Craft.
So, far, I've only used my cutting blade but I have recently purchased the embosser tool and mat and am looking for a project to try it out on.This is a terrfic product for any scrapbooker or paper crafter and worth the money!

eCraft Electronic Die Cutter Review

(More customer reviews)
I am an avid papercrafter and purchased this as a supplement to my Cricut. With promises of being able to cut multiple sheets without a mat - and software that would allow the use of SVG files, it seemed like it would be a good way to do some mass production. I have a love-hate relationship with the mats for my Cricut and was really excited about the possibilities for cutting without a mat. However, I have to say I have been pretty underwhelmed. The reasons are:
1. The software is not capable and has only rudimentary features. The first version was downright buggy and impossible to use. The one and only update that has come out fixed a lot of bugs but did not add any capability. For those of us used to using Sure Cuts A Lot or Make The Cut with our Cricuts and SVG files, this software is in the dark ages. A software update promised for late December has yet to materialize - and at this point, Craftwell is being very vague about when that update may actually become available.
2. The level of customer support from Craftwell is pretty underwhelming. There is one fairly active Yahoo group for this machine, but the owner of that group has pretty much limited it to "happy talk" so discussing problems with the machine and software is not welome there. Craftwell has a community on their website, but the level of activity there is very minimal. Their facebook page is an embarassment - people begging for information, updates, and help that just sit there unanswered. The documentation that comes with the machine is very slim - and Craftwell has been pretty spotty about answering questions.
3. The image cards that are available for the machine are - in my opinion - pretty cartoonish and not very interesting. Because the software is so limited at this point, the image cards are really the only way to robustly work with the machine.
I have not given up on this cutter yet. I have high hopes that Craftwell can get their act together on both the software and the customer service and make this a big success. Some more interesting image cards would be a big plus, too. But for right now, mine is not getting used very much while the warranty ticks away - waiting for vastly improved software and customer support.
Having said all of this - the machine itself is a wonder to behold. It seems to be solid and well-engineered. It has the potential to be something very special, but it just isn't there yet.

I have some doubts about buying this tool because of people who have complains, but I find it very useful, and I'm so happy I bought it.
It's so portable and takes almost no space for storing, it cuts very well, no cracking sounds, rolls perfectly, even cuts, and really good embosses.
I've been making some tests with different materials, and find a very thin plastic sheet at home that I put over the paper and when I cut this plastic protects my fleximat from taking marks, so it can last longer.
I really recommend this tool and the cookie cutters are also great.
Very affordable, and you don't need to buy extra plattforms, they're big enough to take big dies.

Silhouette SD Digital Craft Cutting Tool (Silhouette) Review

Silhouette SD Digital Craft Cutting Tool (Silhouette)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Quick summary: great for average to above average computer users, like creating my own designs, like not having to buy cartridges, cheapest way to go for die cutting machine (in my humble opinion), overall good investment
First, a little about me. I'm a graphic designer with training in Adobe Illustrator. The Silhouette appealed to me because I could create my own shapes and it was cheaper than buying a more expensive machine plus a million cartridges with something like Cricut. I did a lot of research on Wishblade and Silhouette and found the most positive reviews for the Silhouette so I decided to buy it.
I bought the SD because I liked the idea of an auto-load/eject vs. the original Silhouette manual crank. Now, though, I think it'd be ok with the manual crank. I've never used the "SD" feature of this Silhouette.
I was a little nervous about the learning curve with this machine, but it hasn't been a problem for me at all (I consider myself about a 7/10 for computer savvy). I think this cutting machine might be more frustrating for people who are less computer literate or those who don't want to hassle with setting up shapes to cut in the most economical way (so to not waste paper).
I use the red cap (for "thick" paper) most of the time as the yellow cap just wasn't cutting well enough. I think I use average cardstock from the craft store, like the DCWV stacks. If you have really thick paper like bristol, the plugin I linked to below allows you to set the blade to run over the design multiple times. I haven't tried cutting vellum yet, but supposedly this machine can do that with the blue cap. I tried to cut out some pre-printed designs, but it seems like it never cuts exactly the same way twice, so I gave up trying (even after creating the template I talk about below). This is the biggest reason why I didn't give it 5 stars.
PROS:
- make my own designs
- not much else to buy after the machine except cutting mats (see my tip below) and paper
- can cut very long designs (not even sure how long because I've never had paper longer than 12")
- small and light, super easy to store
CONS:
- with the proprietary cutting software that comes with it, paper is wasted
- a little difficult to use with Adobe Illustrator
- proprietary software is PC only Mac users need a plugin
- for some, may have to buy shapes through the Silhouette store, but they are inexpensive
- only cuts up to 8" wide (if you cut the 1/4-1/2" wider they claim it can, you have an indented line from the wheels)
- loud
- lint and pet hair clings to the cutting mats pretty easily. They are hard to keep clean, but still work fine when dirty like this
- when I bought in Dec 09, Vista users had to download a new driver from the Silhouette website (not really a con, just an FYI)
Even though I listed more cons than pros, this is a GREAT buy. I think the pros still outweigh the cons and I would buy it again and recommend it to friends. I guess I'm just paying more attention to the down sides that you probably won't read about anywhere else online.
I downloaded a free plugin for use with Illustrator (on PC, may work for Mac too) from the GraphtecCorp website: [...] .
You'll have to test and set up a template to get everything to cut on the paper with this plugin (I made a 8 x 12 document and added a small box to be cut just outside these borders and make sure all of my shapes are within a 1/4" margin of the document and haven't had a problem. The box doesn't cut on the paper, but it lines up everything else to cut properly. I can set shapes to cut almost right at the edges, so no wasted paper!!). If you know Illy and like the freedom it gives you, it's worth the frustration of figuring this out. This plugin gives you a lot of control over the cutting. You can set the paper type, pressure, how many times the blade runs over the design and even the line type (solid, dashes, dots!!).
My best tip: buy the Cricut brand cutting mats. They are thicker and I feel like they last longer. They are a lot cheaper than the Silhouette brand cutting mats. The only down side is that you'll need to trim them to fit in the Silhouette, but it's very worth it. I thought the Silhouette brand cutting mats were too sticky and pretty thin; I felt like I was cutting through them after a dozen uses. Paper doesn't stick to the Cricut ones but they hold it just fine.

Craft ROBO/ Silhouette CC330L-20 SD Digital Craft Cutting Machine for scrapbooking, crafts, vinyl, & more Review

Craft ROBO/ Silhouette CC330L-20 SD Digital Craft Cutting Machine for scrapbooking, crafts, vinyl, and more
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Silhouette SD after reading reviews for many similar products. I chose it because it appeared to be the best priced product that would suit my needs. I wanted to use it for paper art and book making. This is my first experience with digital cutters. I was hopeful, but based on the reviews I had read I was afraid that I would have trouble getting it to work with my computer, etc. As it turned out I had no problems whatsoever. I took it out of the box, designed a piece, and had it cut out within 3 hours. The machine has exceeded my expectations in every way. I had no problem getting it to work with my laptop. The drawing program that comes with the machine is much better than I expected. I did go ahead and purchase an older copy of Corel Draw so that I could make my own designs more easily. I downloaded the plug in for it and it cuts beautifully from Corel! I'm very pleased. I do think that a person needs to have a fair amount of computer savvy to be comfortable setting up and using the machine. Also, if you have never used a computer drawing program, the drawing aspect will take some practice. On a scale of 0-10, 0 being computer dummy and 10 being total techno-geek, I consider myself about 6.

Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine Review

Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a crafter or scrapbooker, but I am a mother who does the occasional project with her school-age daughter. I've never owned another crafting tool such as from the expensive Cricut line, and frankly, I was intrigued by a 'multi-function' crafting machine that doesn't use batteries, heat or electricity to get the job done, and I jumped at the chance to check it out for myself.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
"It's heavy and pretty big!" This could be considered portable, but I don't think I'd want to lug it around much, as with each function change you need a different cartridge such as the Xyron 3405-30-00 Creatopia Cutz Cutting Cartridge Starter Kit for cutting, and the Xyron 3404-30-00 Creatopia Border Patternz Roller Cartridge Starter Kit with Bonus Floral Cartridge for embossing, as well as the cutting and embossing cartridges that work with the starter kits for each. A buyer of this item would really want to have a space where they could use it and have ample storage for the cartridges that make it work.
"It's solidly made." I'm sure that with proper care this machine could be used effectively for all its muti-functions for many years to come. The Xyron Refillz (adhesives and laminates), Patternz (embossing), Cutz (cutting) and Shapez (die cutting - introduced in 2010), are all part of the Creatopia line that will be used to expand the possibilities of this machine. Each cartridge and starter kit that I received with my special Vine package were sturdy and milled to fit easily together for smooth operation.
"I could do a lot with this tool." The machine comes with a 25' roll of adhesive. I am already thinking of buying the Xyron 3402-06-40 Creatopia Refillz 2-Sided Lamination 40-Feet Cartridge to archive my child's school photos and awards and the Xyron - Creatopia Shapez - Shape Maker Die Press Starter Kit, COMING SOON when it's available. There are many cartridges that add to the versatility of this machine, and the bottom line: the cartridges you own MAKE the machine what you want it to be.
OPERATION: EASE OF USE
The directions that come with this machine are not great. Dare I say, for me at least, they were bad. I almost went to the Xyron site to see if I could find video tutorials, but after almost 2 hours of playing with the Cutz starter kit and the Patternz (embossing) starter kit, I finally figured out how to add and remove cartridges with ease and get the desired effect. I also learned how to position the adhesive cartridge to properly feed it through the rollers.
If you're thinking that I'm just bad with directions... I have built desktop computers from the ground up, and am always called by other members of my family to set-up home electronics. I think if there is one flaw in the Creatopia machine packaging, it's in the directions. Clear, concise, step-by-step instructions with photos that are bigger than a postage stamp would be a helpful reference when getting used to and setting up the machine for each new function.
Once you get past the 'how to do I put it together' thing, it's easy. Slide the cartridges you want to use into the machine until it locks the cartridge into place. Crank the handle clockwise as you feed the paper or fabric (up to 1/2" thick) into the machine.
VALUE
If you know what you want to do with the machine initially, you'll save yourself some money. The machine ships with 25' of adhesive and that's it. Starter kits for cutting and embossing will run between twenty-five and thirty dollars with limited options in each kit. You're mainly paying for the main cartridge that seats in the machine. The cartridges that expand each function run another ten to fifteen with 2 new options in each. Examples: Xyron 3404-33-00 Creatopia Border Patternz Border-Embossing Roller Cartridge, Stars and Xyron 3405-33-00 Creatopia Cutz Blade Cartridge Kit, Set of 2, Pinking.
Yes, this machine offers many handy functions in one portable, manually operated package, but the costs will rise quickly the more options you add to it. Not uncommon to specialty craft items, but something to be considered.
CONCLUSION
The Xyron Creatopia Multi-Function Crafting Machine allows you to cut, emboss, adhere, laminate and cut out shapes without heat, batteries or electricity. Items up to 12" in width and 1/2" in depth can be fed through this machine, adding to its versatility.
Cartridges that expand the uses of this machine are bulky and will need storage space. They are well made and serve their intended purposes well, but are somewhat heavy due to the rollers that are used. Starter kits are somewhat expensive, but needed to accomplish the tasks as promised by the machine.
Offerings for the expansion of this machine are somewhat limited at the time of this writing, but Xyron promises more options soon including a die cutting cartridge. Prices are reasonable when considering the 'multi-function' capabilities of the machine and other crafting tools on the market.
This machine will appeal to crafters who sew, scrapbook, or make cards, and also to teachers and parents who like to help their kids with school projects.
A good machine that seems to be durably built and full of promise.

With this multi-function machine on duty, crafting enthusiasts can let their imaginations run wild. The unit's generous size fits media up to 12 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick.
