DeLonghi BAR42E Pump-Driven Espresso Maker with Electronic Controls Review

If you want automatic espresso that tastes fantastic, this machine it definitely for you - and I bought mine as a refurb for $119... what a STEAL! I looked into getting a non-pump, but no crema 50% of the time, and often it was simply not hot enough - two heat settings allow you to choose the heat of your coffee... I also owned at one point a Delonghi with the included milk frother - a true waste, unless you want to clean it after every use, this becomes troublesome. With this model, I get no scalding, great foam down tothe bottom if I want! the special two-part stem does a great job of isolating the heat from foam. Plus as the previosu commentor noted, everything comes apart for easy and thorough cleaning. One note,I imagine a lot of people took this machine back because when you first start it up, the pump is extermely loud and doesn't seem to draw water from the reservoir in the back - my advice, open the steam valve when you are first filling it - when water comes out of the steam spigot, the machine has filled. Turn off the steam valve and proceed as normal - you'll find this machine heats fast, is very low maintenance and puts out superior espresso and latte - a great buy!

Espressione 1377 Cafe Chic Cappuccino Maker, Anthracite Grey Review

Espressione 1377 Cafe Chic Cappuccino Maker, Anthracite Grey

I upgraded from a very cheap little steam-only machine with no pump, and the cafe chic certainly makes better espresso than that. The company claims that Cafe Chic is easy to clean, and they are telling the truth- the bad news is that as messy as this machine is, it has to be easy to clean or you'd never get to enjoy the products of your labors. As soon as I turn on the steam function, steam also comes out of the espresso maker, which has a very ineffective seal and leaks badly- I constantly have soggy coffegrounds all over everything. The steamer itself is nice, it does a good job in relatively little time, but it's in a very bad place. The steamer is off to the side, and very low, so it's difficult to get the steamed milk out without spillage. In the picture, the steamer actually looks usable, but the picture is NOT accurate- point in fact, the picture includes 2 espresso shot cups, which are not included. The espresso maker comes with a micro-filter that also has problems, your grounds don't drain, so the best of your espresso just sits there...Bottom line- it makes decent espresso, or as good as it can get while using a mere 15 bars of pressure, at an inexpensive price, but you get what you pay for. If you can, save up a little extra and go for something pricier- it'll be worth it. Wish I had...

I bought the predecessor of this model and it seemed to work fine--both for espresso and regular coffee. That is, until a year after I bought it. Then it began to leak every time I made coffee. It would spill about 1-2 cups on the counter through a overflow hole in the bottom of the unit. I couldn't locate the leak and, as it got worse, I decided to replace the unit. I found the new model and assumed the problem was a one-off. I bought this model at a good price and everything was fine until after 6 months, the same problem occurred. I took the unit completely apart and although I found the leak was coming from a built-in overflow tube next to the feeder tube for the coffee maker, there was simply no reason for water to be running out of the tube. In addition, the carafe or lid is a really bad design because if you don't pour slowly, it leaks all over the counter. All told, this is a frustrating piece of junk.

Saeco Odea Go Fully Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Saeco Odea Go Fully Automatic Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It lives up to the functionality described fairly well. However, there are a couple of things you should know.
1) Even at the full-cup setting, it doesn't really fill up a coffee cup. If you have a large cup, it might fill it up half way, if you're lucky.
2) Due to #1, the picture that shows two cups being brewed is somewhat misleading. The picture would look like the one shown only if the cups were left in place after the first brew cycle in order to run a second brew cycle into those same half-filled cups. This no faster than just brewing one cup and swapping in the next cup for the second brew cycle.
3) There is a low water sensor to let you know you need to fill up the reservoir -- which is good. However, it will stop brewing the instant the low water sensor triggers even if it is in the middle of brewing a cup. This ruins the cup in progress, but to make matters worse, the low water sensor triggers when there is about two cups of water left in the reservoir. There is pleny of water left to finish the currently brewing cup (and probably enough for yet another cup), but the brewing comes to a crashing halt mid-brew. I wish it would perform the low water sensor check AFTER finishing a cup so you know when to refill the reservoir withot ruining a brew cycle (or wasting beans).

Well the machine was good until the warranty ran out. It started leaking water a little at a time, then the water stopped flowing into my cup and just ran out from under the machine. I am pretty handy so I thought I would take the back off and see if it could be fixed. I found that the heating element that the water flows through has a small hole in it. No problem I will just order one and be done with it. NOT gonna happen. It appears that some genius at Delonghi made the decision not to let customers that spend over $1000 dollars on a $200 machine buy internal parts, of course they want to rape me on repair charges plus the shipping both ways. The repair takes all of maybe 15 minutes if I had the part. If anyone knows where I can order a heating element please let me know. I will NEVER buy another Delonghi product!!!

Gaggia Dose Espresso Machine (12800)

I have owned a number of Gaggia machines and liked them. I bought this for my girlfriend and it is the worst espresso machine I have used. it is a poorly manufactured plastic imitation of a Gaggia machine.
It is too light and you have to hold it down to attach the porta-filter.
The heating tray on top is practically useless as it doesn't get hot.
the Filter seal started leaking after 2 months and I have waited 3 months for a replacement.
It does not siphon water into the tank so you have to prime it everytime you use it.
Don't waste your money - spend more and get the Gaggia Baby or Coffee. both of these are great machines that will make better espresso.

The Gaggia Espresso Dose features a dosage button that allows the user to set their preferred water volume dosage for one or two cups of espresso ? a convenient twist on the classic semi-automatic Gaggia machine. Housed inside the warm silver ABS exterior lies a durable stainless steel boiler, the heart of brewing and steaming. Stainless steel is an ideal boiler material ? it provides excellent heat retention for properly extracted espresso, and it resists scale buildup and deterioration. Not to forget about those cappuccino and latte lovers, the Gaggia Espresso Dose uses a Pannarello frothing wand so you can foam and steam milk easily.

Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Recently my La Pavoni broke down after 3 years, so I had to look for another machine. My machine of choice for espresso has always been Cimballi, but I was not impressed with any of their machines, which did not require a water line. After some searching and recommendation from a friend I happened upon the Pasquini Livia 90.
As far as espresso machines go, the Pasquini Livia 90 is the best unit that does not require a water line. The water resevoir holds a very large amount of water and the espresso made with this machine is simply amazing.
A good espresso should have a thick layer of creme on top (goldish brown in color) which will hold the sugar poured in to the coffee afloat for a few seconds. The Pasquini Livia 90 was the first machine I've owned to accomplish the feat. I've owned a $700 Krups Fully Automated Machine, used a $3,000 Fully Automated Machine and owned the La Pavoni fully manual machine. However, the Pasquini was the only machine to provide the perfect creme.
The steam produced by the machine will froth milk for any of the popular espresso drinks and the ability to draw hot water from the unit is also a nice touch. Unlike some machines you can leave the unit on for long periods of time without having to worry about burning out the machine.
Best machine in its class.

I received my coffee maker and loved it for almost a year, until it stopped dripping the coffee. I had followed all the directions for cleaning and servicing the machine. I called the Arabee company from whom I purchased it.
They promptly made arrangement for me to get it back to them, as it was still under warranty. They have now had it for over 4 months and I can't get a proper response from them. I have been told that it took 6 weeks in the queue to get to service, then they needed a part, which may or may not have had to come from Italy. Now they won't even return calls or answer when I call. The next step, I guess is a legal one to get a new coffee maker or some form of recovery.
Loved the coffee maker while I had it.

Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic Commercial Espresso/Cappuccino Machine Review

Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic Commercial Espresso/Cappuccino Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Pasquini Livia 90 Automatic in 2002. The version I needed was for 240 volt operation so it was shipped from Italy. At the same time I also ordered the grinder and 2 drawer base. I had spent a lot of time reading reviews and comments on several sites for a wide variety of machines. The number of reviews which compared their brands to the Pasquini Livia machines was what really sold me on the Pasquini. You don't compare your machine(s) to lesser machines, you compare against the best. If so many various reviews used Pasquini as a target then it must be well worth a look. I am glad I did, it is an extremely well built and reliable machine.
I have mine on for 12 to 16 hours per day and make and serve quite a lot of espresso and cappuccino to family and friends. The Pasquini is also used for tea, cocoa, instant soups and anything else that calls for the use of near boiling water. The machine gets it right every time, any variation in quality is due to the coffee, the milk or the user. It took a bit of time to learn how to use it effectively but it has never disappointed me.
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the choice of a plastic water storage reservoir in the machine. I think that a stainless steel tank would be a better choice due to the effects of age, heat and vibrations which caused some cracks in my original tank. Pasquini replaced it free of charge even though the machine was out of warranty! A stainless steel tank would add to the noise level though and it already is not a stealthy machine. The pump is by no means quiet, but it certainly does the job and I'm sure will continue to do so for years to come.
I recommend Pasquini without reservation based on the machine and the service I have had when dealing directly with the company on several occasions.

From Italy comes the celebrated Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic espresso & cappuccino machine. Designed for home, office, or small restaurant use, it employs sturdy commercial components from a world famous professional espresso machine line. The Pasquini Livia 90 Semiautomatic espresso machine sets the standard for what is possible from a home espresso machine. This is the true connoisseur's espresso machine, and is a lifetime investment for the espresso aficionado.Jam packed with commercial grade features and parts, the Pasquini Livia is a true heat exchanger espresso machine, which means the boiler is used for steaming on demand, and espresso water is drawn straight from the built in reservoir - it gets flash heated as it passes through a piping system inside the boiler. With the Livia 90, producing espresso shot after espresso shot, and steaming instantly for large parties is never a problem.Brewing espresso & frothing milk at the same time is no problem for the Livia! This is an absolute necessity for any espresso machine used for entertaining or in a semi-commercial environment. This saves a lot of time and eliminates the need for you to wait for the boiler to ""recover"" between espresso brewing and milk heating functions (common on all single boiler machines). The dual heat exchanger allows for both functions to take place simultaneously. The Livia 90 Semiautomatic is just like the Livia 90 Automatic, but IT DOES NOT have the automatic one-touch brewing system like the automatic version.

Espressione 1334/1 Cafe Minuetto Professional Espresso Machine Review

Espressione 1334/1 Cafe Minuetto Professional Espresso Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just purchased this unit, (actually the 1334 not the 1334/1, the only difference is less stainless steel exterior). I read hundreds of reviews on all kinds of models and spent way to much time going to the stores here in Florence, Italy looking and comparing and talking to the sales reps. Like most items if you get a bad one you hate it and if you get a good one it is the best there is! So many units are plastic and so light weight that they really scared me. Even the old names out there seem to have models that look and feel cheap and you wonder how long they will last? I narrowed it down to the Ariete Minuetto, Gaggia Evolution and the DeLonghi EC 310 models. I was on a tight budget so that made things a little difficult to sort out as well. The DeLonghi had lots of reviews and the highest user satisfaction rating but two things turned me away, 50 euros higher in cost and it felt light and seemed kind of cheap. The Gaggia was pretty plastic and light as well and was supposed to have good inner working parts but the reviews were a 50/50 thing for the most part with not good ratings on after the sale service. The Minuetto had only 2 or 3 user ratings on it that I could find and they were 50/50 as well but the negative one seemed more like user error to me than the brands problem. So after a lot of scrutiny I decided on the Minuetto at a cost of 99 euro. I looked at the Minuetto pro with all the stainless on it but decided that another 35 euro was not worth just the look of more stainless steel.
The unit was very well packaged and there was no damage of any kind to the exterior of the unit and the fit and finish was excellent. The unit feels very solid and has a good weight to it like something that is made to last for a while. Not bright and flashy in appearance but just simple and very professional looking with stainless steel parts and brushed chrome and the darker areas are a dark gray color. The foamer wand is stainless steel and not plastic like so many I looked at and feels solid when I turn it and not wobbly like it is going to fall off at any moment. The drip tray grate is stainless steel as well. The drip tray is easily removed for cleaning and even has a float gauge to tell you if it gets full of water. The top has a stainless steel plate over the cup warming area but like so many I don't think it will get warm enough to want to use it for cup warming. The plate is removable for cleaning so that makes cleaning the top of the unit very easy. The water tank is on the back side and is clear so you can see the water level with ease and it hold a very good amount of water so you won't be filling it each time you use it. The tank is also very easy to remove and the top of it also is used as a handle to lift the tank from it's position on the unit.
The filters it comes with are, one for using pods and one for a one cup espresso using ground coffee and one for a two cup shot using ground coffee. The filter wand and housing are solid but the handle might feel slightly light weight. Time will tell how it hold up. There are two indicator lights on the front, one for power being on and the other letting you know it is up to the right heat level to use. Their is a rocker power switch on the back left side of the unit. The main control knob on the front is chrome plastic but feels very solid and turning it to the left produces steam for the wand and to the right for pouring the espresso and in the center for standby mode. User manual is shown in several languages and is clear and easy to read. Not hugely in depth but adequate for the most part. There is also a service center brochure supplied.
A short word about service. I had one very simple question that I emailed the Ariete customer service center about and within 4 hours I had a return email with a very clear answer. If that is typical of their response I give them high points for taking care of their customers.
I followed the instructions for preparing the unit for use. Some talk about noise of espresso machines. What came from this unit was nothing alarming at all. You of course heard the pump running but what do you expect? The unit heated up quickly after priming the pump etc and ran hot water through the filter well and also steam through the wand very well. No leaks of any kind, no water spraying where it should not etc. but just worked like it was supposed to work. I filled the two cup filter with ground espresso coffee with the supplied measuring spoon and tamped it with the other end which is a tamper. Not heavy duty but it did do the job. Positioned the filter and snugged it into place. Allowed it a couple of minutes to warm up and then turned it to the espresso switch side. In a couple of seconds great looking espresso began to flow with a great creama effect on the top. I then ran the steam wand in a glass for a few seconds to allow it to warm and produce good steam and then with a cold cup of milk in a stainless cup began to produce great looking frothy milk. Espresso and milk were nice and hot and looked great. Taste was not perfect but that was because I used a cheap espresso brand to begin with to get the hang of things.
So in summery this unit did all that it was supposed to do the first time out. Looks good, feels good and is very easy to use. My first impressions are 5 stars! If you are looking for a well made and put together easy to use espresso machine take a look at this one. It is worth the look and I think you will be impressed especially if you compare it to others in the same and even slightly higher price range.

I've owned the Francis x1 Iperespresso for two weeks now. Here's my take:
PACKAGING- Impeccable, very well protected for shipping.
INSTRUCTIONS- In all major languages, the guide clearly walks you through every step in what is truly a simple set up process.
QUALITY- First rate, nearly industrial grade with but a couple minor exceptions not worth mentioning.
COOL FACTOR- I think it IS cool; you'll have to judge that for yourself.
OTHER OPTIONS: I've only had previous experience with Nespresso machines, of which I've owned several. But Nespresso does not offer the quality of coffee that I prefer. In my opinion, it's mostly for lungos and soft lattes. If you like high intensity coffee, as I do, the Nespresso alternative is probably not for you.
SUPPLIERS FOR THE COFFEE CAPSULES- There are many, including Amazon, which of course you can google for. In my case, Amazon does not ship illy coffee to my location in San Juan, PR, so I ordered it elsewhere. Five cans of Dark Roast capsules. The cans, which I read should be stored in a cool place or in the fridge after opening, are vacuum sealed and come with 21 capsules. After a very simple set up, I poured myself a terrific cup of macchiatto which I really enjoyed.
BUYING- Of course, I shopped around before ordering from Amazon. I couldn't find a better deal, and with free shipping to San Juan, what more could I have asked for.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE- After a couple of weeks, I'm thrilled with my X-1 Iperespresso. It is very easy to use and requires minimal maintenance, just refilling the water tank and occasionally emptying and cleaning the drip tray.

This snazzy-looking espresso machine had our hopes up. As coffee roasters and coffee students we liked previous reviewers who talked this machine up. The first brewing attempt produced a bland drink with no crema as promised by Whole Latte Love. I then spent an afternoon adjusting variables. Our coffee is one day after roasting with a fine grind by Rocky Rancilio which cost more than the Gaggia Color. Eventually I took the temperature of the water exiting the brew head. 160 Fahrenheit. Water this cool can't make coffee by any method. Long conversations with Whole latte Love had them admitting that we knew more about coffee than them. Promises of full refund did not pan out although we did force them into issuing a return shipping label.
We are amazed that a reputable company like Gaggia can desgn a technically deficient machine like this. We would not deal with Whole Latte Love again although they are not necessarily an intentionally bad organization.

I would never normally give 1 star to anything except if it is dead on arrival and not fixable- obviously there is a design flaw so unforgivable, this is why it is being sold for likely half of what is was originally priced to retail for. I wanted a white retro cappucinno machine for my newly remodeled mid-century modern kitchen. I was willing to pay at least 2-500, as I am quite addicted to fine espresso and prefer it in the morning to coffee. This machine looked attractive but had no reviews I could locate. I felt it was a risk and saw it priced well below what it used to retail for. (more red flags) I thought I'd risk it, because if it was decent, I would save a couple a' c notes. Too bad for me.I eagerly tried to start it, read the directions and followed each step to the letter. Tried to prime it (run some water through the unit before making an actual espresso) but absolutely NO water was coming out. I was mystifyed- but re-read the instructions just in case I missed some minut detail of incredible importance. I checked the tank to see if I was crazy & forgot to fill it. Totally full tank of water, just sitting there. I emptied the tank, and I inspected the hose. I then saw "IT". A BIG JAGGED TEAR in the cheap plastic water delivery tube. So big of a tear it was hanging by a thread! I could not believe it- because there is NO WAY this damage could have occurred via any type of shipping. The hose was not something that could be removed without completely diss-assembling the unit either. So I could not even attempt to fix it w/o voiding any return policy! I had to return it. It was so un-believable, I took some photos to email to Amazon if the seller disputed the return- I politely emailed the company explaining the issue just as I've stated. Surprisingly, they did not even question this odd type of damage and curtly (no apology offered either) told me they would pick it up via Fed X. weirdly fast response. somewhat suspicious if these defective machine was a return, and was being sold again by folks that hope someone will forget to return it after purchasing? Oh well.. Just don't buy it.

La Pavoni PAB-16 Espresso Si Black Automatic Espresso Machine Review

Have had this espresso machine for several months now. Researched a lot before buying and believe this is a great machine for the money. Performs well. Makes a great shot of coffee, assuming you are using great espresso beans. Looks good on the counter, altho not a sexy as the more expensive machines. Not too noisy. Only major negative: Not a lot of clearance between the machine and the drip tray - can't use anything taller than a cappuccino cup. Also, machine does drip a bit after you stop brewing.
Consider getting a good burr grinder to go with it. I highly recommend the Capresso Infinity.
Takes a 53mm tamper size.

Gaggia 16109 Evolution Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver and Chrome Review

Although I would like the unit to be all stainless, that is unrealistic expectation at this price point. The internals are the same as higher priced Gaggia units and it makes an excellent cup of espresso. I use the Evolution to make a minimum of 4 double shots daily and it never misses a beat. The Evolution is easy to operate, easy to clean and is ready to use in less than 5 minutes. I highly recommend this unit and would purchase the Evolution again.
If you are concerned about the "plastic" exterior, buy the Gaggia Classic or another higher priced unit instead.

Espressione Café Retro Espresso Machines Review

Espressione Café Retro Espresso Machines

(More customer reviews)
I almost didn't buy this machine because I was worried about some of the negative reveiws I've read about it from users. However, it was the only machine its price range that really caught our eye, so we went ahead and purchased it and have been using it for about six months. It is hands down the best machine I've ever owned. It has great features, and the espresso is the best espresso I've made at home, and better than most espresso I can buy in american coffee shops. A quick rundown of the great features.
1. It looks great. It heats up quickly, and it is very simple to use.
2. The size of the water resevoir is pretty generous. It holds enough water for about 24 shots. You can expect to get a little less if you are steaming a lot of milk, but if you are steaming at the recommended temperature, the machine is very water efficient, and you shouldn't see a dramatic drop. We use it every day to make at least two drinks (at leeast 4 shots), a lot more on the weekends, and we refill only about once a week, roughly. The design also makes it quite easy to refill, I've been in the middle of steaming or pulling a shot when I realized the reservoir was low, and refilled whiled pulling the shot. This is awfully convenient.
3. The machine comes with a disc you can put inside the porta filter to make a sort of fake crema by whipping the coffee, which is popular on upper-end machines these days. However, if you are using good coffee, and grind your beans fresh, and brew the coffee at the recommended temperature, the machine produces a wonderful genuine crema without the disc. I never get an espresso in a coffee house with a crema as good. (crema has more to do with the the quality of the coffee than the machine, but cheaper machines that pull the coffee way too hot never produce good cremas because of the crazy temperatures.)
4. The steam wand does a great job of genlty steaming and frothing without scalding the daylights out of your milk. I've heard a lot of complaints about the steamer, but in my experience it works perfectly, and easily.
5. It does come with an adaption for pods, if you're into pods (blech.)
6, I love that the machine has a temperature gague that allows you to control the temperature of your steam and coffee, and not just indicator lights. It allows you to have a lot more control over the quality of your espresso.
A few things that are so so, the included tamp is flimsy and useless, get yourself a nice heavy one. The drip tray does feel a little light and cheap compared to the rest of the machine, but it is perfectly functional. The Cup warmer isn't very successful at warming cups. But these are minor quibbles I have with it.
I'm sure if I were willing to pay 4 or 5 times as much, I'd get a better espresso, but for the price, I couldn't be happier with this machine. It beats any of the little starter machines you get, and makes better espresso than machines that cost twice the price, in my experience. I'm very happy with this machine.
