Saeco MI-GL-04 Milk Island, 0.4 Liter Review

(More customer reviews)First of, I used to be a big Saeco fan - I have used them for many years. But this milk island is just junk. As the other reviewers here report, it has a tendency to leak water in copious amounts after a few weeks of use. We actually sent ours in to Saeco (a sheer nightmare) and since we got it back, it does not leak anymore so this can be fixed. Good news, right? Well, if it only would froth the milk it would be great but it doesn't. Occasionally, like every 20th time or so, you get nice frothy milk. The other 19 times you get hot, runny milk with barely a film of froth. This is ridiculous. I have tried every type of milk there is and that doesn't make much of a difference. I will now have to buy one of the cheap little frothers to sit next to my $2,000 Saeco because that machine can't froth, milk island or wand!

(More customer reviews)I really wanted to like this coffee maker. We've tried several and thought this one was the answer but unfortunately, we need to keep looking.
The problems are:
1. Coffee produced is not that hot. I expected more, especially with a pre-heated carafe.
2. As someone else noted, the carafe will pour even in the "closed" position. This indicates an air leak-- something that will chill the coffee much more quickly.
3. Pour spout is not good and a lip overhang means that the last drop is virtually impossible to get out.
4. The indicator for the timer is very hard to see.
5. The water holder, while convenient to remove, is very hard to level. And, there is a hole in the tank to prevent over filling. Unfortunately, it means clean up of spilled water.
6. The handle was crooked (not a major issue but annoying to look at on a $129 coffee maker).
Made good coffee, especially in small batches, but lots of machines will do that. Shame it had too many flaws to overcome.

(More customer reviews)I have had this product for about 2 weeks and have owned several different brands of grind and brew machines over the years.
Thus far- coffee is good (on strong); clean-up is simple; programming requires a little experience on sequencing (I've owned other brands and seem to revert back to old habits).
The carafe design, however, is horrible. Whether filling the water reservoir or filling the cup, it leaks all the time unless you pour at a dribble rate (for the 1st cup of coffee in the morning? Come on!!!). About 1 cup of water seems to run over the counter when filling the reservoir. This seems to be a function of the narrow width of the spout. Should be an easy fix.
Also, the carafe design always seems to leave about 1/2 cup of water in the carafe when filling the reservoir until you practically turn the carafe upside down.

(More customer reviews)I had tried three different machines before purchasing this one, and I am completely satisfied with it. The equivalent Cuisinart machine, which has excellent ratings on Amazon and elsewhere was a huge disappointment: the place where you fill the water is this tiny area on the back right of the machine when you lift off the cover...getting the water in there at 5AM when I am half asleep was NOT easy. That is why that machine went back to the store. Then I tried the Krups, and thought is was a little better, i.e. the space to get water in was somewhat larger, it was still not ideal, and after a couple of days the indicater for how much water is in the tank seemed to have air bubbles in it so the reading was completely inaccurate. I tried to refill a number of times and put unit upside down...but could not fixt the bubble problem, so that one went back to the store. Then I tried the Kitchenaid coffee maker with the romovable water tank...great idea and super easy, BUT, this coffee machine had a basket filter area and not cone, and I almost overflowed the filter area making only 7 cups of coffee (because we like our coffee strong). There is NO WAY I could have made the full 12 cups with that machine. The Saeco has removable tank and cone filter and is super-easy to use, very quiet, it's a front loader so you don't have to pull out the machine every time you make coffee...I am extremely satisfied with its design and performance...I have had it for a month now and thought I would write a review because it only had one!! I highly recommend this coffee maker!!

Saeco Odea Go Fully Automatic Espresso Machine Review

(More customer reviews)It lives up to the functionality described fairly well. However, there are a couple of things you should know.
1) Even at the full-cup setting, it doesn't really fill up a coffee cup. If you have a large cup, it might fill it up half way, if you're lucky.
2) Due to #1, the picture that shows two cups being brewed is somewhat misleading. The picture would look like the one shown only if the cups were left in place after the first brew cycle in order to run a second brew cycle into those same half-filled cups. This no faster than just brewing one cup and swapping in the next cup for the second brew cycle.
3) There is a low water sensor to let you know you need to fill up the reservoir -- which is good. However, it will stop brewing the instant the low water sensor triggers even if it is in the middle of brewing a cup. This ruins the cup in progress, but to make matters worse, the low water sensor triggers when there is about two cups of water left in the reservoir. There is pleny of water left to finish the currently brewing cup (and probably enough for yet another cup), but the brewing comes to a crashing halt mid-brew. I wish it would perform the low water sensor check AFTER finishing a cup so you know when to refill the reservoir withot ruining a brew cycle (or wasting beans).

Many espresso purists turn their noses up at superauto machines, but as someone who has owned a high-end non-auto machine, this Saeco will reliably produce a high-quality espresso shot with virtually no effort! With my manual machines the shots would vary in quality, and while at times I could produce a better shot on my own, it would require a lot of effort. This superauto produces espresso that is 100% reliably better than most but not all of the shots I could produce manually, and it does so with almost no effort on my part (add water, beans, empty dreg drawer, that's about it).
Oh, and definitely get the [optional] Milk Island, which produces a phenomenal microfoam, to the point that you can do some basic latte art with it; again not better than some I could produce manually, but consistently better than most I produce manually, and with no work at all!
This machine looks great, heats up INSTANTANEOUSLY (that's right, no waiting at all for a boiler to heat up), is fairly quiet (thanks to ceramic grinder), and produces espresso that is superior to anything you could ever get a Starbucks.
I also looked at just about every other superauto in the $500 to $1,500 price range, and in fact tried a number of them out in person. This particular unit was my favorite by a wide margin!
BUY THIS AND THE OPTIONAL MILK ISLAND AND NEVER GO TO STARBUCKS AGAIN! I'm serious.

(More customer reviews)I received my coffee maker and loved it for almost a year, until it stopped dripping the coffee. I had followed all the directions for cleaning and servicing the machine. I called the Arabee company from whom I purchased it.
They promptly made arrangement for me to get it back to them, as it was still under warranty. They have now had it for over 4 months and I can't get a proper response from them. I have been told that it took 6 weeks in the queue to get to service, then they needed a part, which may or may not have had to come from Italy. Now they won't even return calls or answer when I call. The next step, I guess is a legal one to get a new coffee maker or some form of recovery.
Loved the coffee maker while I had it.

Sent off for repairs and after two months it was sent back to me only to work for another two weeks before breaking again. Delonghi seems to be content with having the machine in transit and repair longer than in my kitchen. Very poor product. Very high price. Stick with your local gourmet coffee shop.
Main problems: Milk frother will not work. Leaks water from the bottom of the machine.

(More customer reviews)I owned a Jura Impressa S90 for 6 years at a daily rate of 8 espressos . No problems , I sold it to upgrade it for a professional like machine.. Bad decision, The Talea Ring Plus has a beautiful design and is relatively small for a full automatic, but...
After 4 months it was leaking (faulty 0 rings ), it wastes more water that it goes into the coffee, it is very high maintenance to clean (new filter every 2 weeks, cleaning tablet every 3 weeks, descaling twice in 3 months), but most important if you have a problem forget about Saeco customer service:rude, incompetent and they don't return emails or calls, so you better have a good relationship with your retailer to enlist their help. After the repair of my NEW machine, Saeco lost my original box and protective pads, they scratched the led display and plate and the serial number sticker was missiing...
After 8 single coffees you must empty the grounds and the drip tray! the container is flooded with water.
What about the coffee? Just OK , not any better that one could get with a machine one third of the price.
If you are thinking superautomatic forget Saeco( at least this model)

(More customer reviews)Actually I have this machine. I wrote this below review for older model.I got this machine from ebay because for lower price was available there.
So I have used it already for one month. The espresso is coming out a fabulous, I think better, then Starbucks, even I have used Starbucks beans. I have tried three types of beans (Lavazza, Starbucks, Costco Hawaiian (yellow package) brand), so the best taste and creamy was from Costco Hawaiian brand. Lavazza in other hand was creamy but is not strong enough.
The cleaning is easy and fast. The frothing pitcher is produced good milk for cappuccino. I don't have any problems with this machine.
I have also noticed that me and my family is started consuming more coffee. I last time I have bought Starbucks coffee was just a day before I got this fabulous machine.
Also I will to suggest a follow the user manual and if you don't now something called to CS Saeco[...]
Because remembering, its European product, so it's like a German car- amazing to drive but easy to break, if you're not followed to user manual.
I gave four stars is only because the trash container need to be emptied too often, even the last one was not full and water container I wish will be bigger.

(More customer reviews)I almost always look at Amazon reviews before I buy anything these days. Shopping for an espresso maker with this method was extremely frustrating because the reviews for most machines are all over the map. The same machine will be loved by some, hated by others. This seems to be because people are looking for different things. The would-be barristas (why would anyone dream of working at Starbucks?) want all the bells and whistle and others just want the basics. For me, this machine does a pretty good job of covering both worlds. I have had it about a month and use it many times each day and have had no problems. I mostly use it for espresso using freshly ground beans and it works well for that. I have also used it with pods a couple of times and that seems to work well also. I think the Cappucinator attachment is pretty cool. Basically, you pour some cold milk in a cup, stick a little plastic hose from the Nina's Cappucinator attachment in to the cup, place another cup under the Cappucinator and turn it on and out comes steamed milk with froth. I get a nice froth with 2%, not so much with skim. One other reviewer notes that you need to prime the pump for making espresso after each of the steam wand and/or cappucinator. This is true but it is a simple and quick process and doesn't bother me. Overall, I'm very happy with this machine.

Anyway, this thing is quite simply awesome. My wife and I are now addicted to coffee :-) Latte machiatos and cappuccinos in the morning, espresso in the evening, hot milk for our daughter too!
The machine is totally automated, it will tell you when to clean it, when to add stuff, it will keep your cups warm, and did I mention it makes wonderful coffee? You can personalize how you want each of the different coffee drinks to come out, stronger, hotter, more robust. You can double the quantity of coffee coming out. It will accommodate various cup sizes, from espresso cups to large coffee cups. Did I mention it makes wonderful espresso/coffee :-)
Now the negatives: the machine is rather large so make sure you have the space for it, figure about a 1'X1' footprint of counter space, but it looks very modern and high tech. You do have to keep it clean, certain things have to be done about 15 minutes after your first cup (if you use the cappuccitore to make milk based drinks) but that is understandable as you want to make sure the milk doesn't start clogging everything. The water reservoir is not very large (you can get about 6 cups of coffee out of it) considering the size of the machine. You do have to learn to navigate the touch sensitive ring to get to what you want, I can imagine some people finding it frustrating. The machine does seem to have a lot of moving internal parts, when you use it you hear all kinds of mechanical noises in there, it makes you wonder how long that internal mostly plastic apparatus, called the Brew Group, will last; it's the heart of the machine. I am now drinking more coffee than ever!!!
All in all this thing is awesome, I hope it lasts a long time!

The brew head would only produce a few dribbles of water (it took 60 seconds to get 1 ounce of water directly from the brew head when the brew switch was engaged). Dispite this bad first impression, I went ahead and gave a second machine a try. Mostly due to the fact that a good Italian friend of mine has had a Classico for several years and it has proven to be a steady, reliable performer under daily use. I am happy to say that the replacement arrived quickly and performed beautifully!
It heats up quickly, the espresso is just the right temperature, and it produces plenty of steam from the frothing attachment. Almost straight out of the box, it produced shots of espresso that were half crema! It seems to perform best with a finer grind of coffee.
I was a bit leary about the "Rapid Steam" feature. I don't understand how this machine can go instantly from steam to brewing and not burn the coffee with water that is at too high of a temperaturefor proper brewing. So, I actually put an instant read thermometer in the cup and discovered that the coffee actually comes out at just the right temp...

(More customer reviews)I got this thing 4 days ago when Costco had it on sale. Awesome coffee, whether you just want an Espresso, Latte, Cappucino, or a regular coffee. Easy to use. Not too noisy when grinding, tons of options to program. So, all in all, seems like a great machine. But...I have to say I already had to use their manual pump twice to "ventilate" the system (charging the circuit with water). It is supposed to do this once when installing, and then after a long time of not being in use. Well, I already had to do it twice within 4 days. Worse, it did not do it automatically, so I had to use this 20 cent hand pump that does not properly fit. It's ridiculous, this is a $1,200 machine. I really love the coffee, so I want to believe in it, but if this happens a few more times, I will check with customer service, and if this does not stop I will send it back and get a manual 15 bar one without so much electronic. Too bad though, coffee is really great.

(More customer reviews)I read reviews of multiple automatic expresso machines (deLonghi, Saeco, Gaggia, etc) and was concerned that most brands tend to have some negative reviews of their selected expresso machine breaking down after some time. Since there was no single review that reports on the reliability of these machines, I decided to take my chance with this expresso machine.
The manual of this expresso maker lacks sufficient instructions. Mine came with the new series Intenza water filter. The instruction, with the new water filter, instructs that the existing small white filter needs to be removed and does not provide instructions on its removal. It is only upon calling Saeco customer service that I understood how the small white filter can be removed. And when necessary, I sometimes called Seattle Coffee Gear, whom I originally bought mine from, who has excellent product expertise and customer service.
Most automatic expresso machines come with plastic parts from in to out. So this machine stands out in that the main body is still made from steel.

This product comes with an inbuilt grinder, with small to coarse grinder settings, and thus making it super-handy (fully automatic!).
I used this machine to brew some Blue Mountain coffee. It came out so rich in aroma and taste. Previously I was using some traditional filter to brew this coffee and was not able to discern the aroma and taste of this Blue Mountain coffee.

And the frother is able to froth the milk with a consistent quality as well. And it comes with the option of hot water as well.
I bought this during Jan 2010, so I can't comment on the reliability as yet. So far I cleaned this up after each use. In case, this machine starts breaking down, I will update my review so that future buyers can be fore-warned.1.5 mths later:
Upon power on, the 2 top & 1 bottom leftmost LEDs started flashing. I referred to the manual and it indicated loading and to wait. After waiting 10 mins and resetting the machine, I still observed the same phenomenon. After some tests, I found that it needed priming. So far this has happened twice in the last 2 weeks and priming solves the problem. Saeco USA needs to improve on their manual instructions !!!
