Starbucks Ground Coffee Espresso Roast, 12 oz Review

Starbucks Ground Coffee Espresso Roast, 12 oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Few things I'd like to point out:
1. "Espresso" is not a roast. It's a drink. In northern Italy they make espresso from Vienna roast, in southern Italy they use French. Starbucks appears to be using French roast, so they should just label it French roast like any normal person would.
2. The product description says "Taste Espresso Roast as both a shot of espresso and brewed in a coffee press. This is one versatile coffee!" This is patently absurd. It's pre-ground coffee, and it's either for use in espresso machines or presses, but not both. Here's why:
Making a shot of espresso requires a very fine grind. Making coffee press coffee requires a very course grind. If you have ground coffee that is appropriate for espresso machines, it will pass through the filter in a coffee press and you will have a cup of sludge. If you use ground coffee that does not pass through a press's filter in an espresso machine, you do not get espresso. You get cafe crema, which is a good, but entirely different, beverage.
Therefore, a "Universal Grind" is an impossibility. They should tell you on the label what kind of coffee maker it's ground for, like normal people.
3. It's over-roasted. Starbucks has an excellent bean-sourcing operation that buys better coffee than any other company of its size. Then they roast all their beans Vienna or French. Most beans taste best at a particular level of roasting that varies with the bean, and for most beans that level is not Vienna or French. So why roast all your beans too dark? I guess it's just easier that way. Also, it lets them rename Vienna Roast as "Starbucks Roast" because the Austrians don't seem to care.
That said, this is still better than what you get in the supermarket - Starbucks specializes in coffee and sources much better beans than any of the companies that also make cheese, hot dogs, shampoo or cigarettes.
Anyway, if you really want some good coffee, do this:
Buy a grinder. Nothing makes coffee lose flavor like keeping it around after grinding. If you have a drip coffee machine, get a grinder with spinning blades; if you have something else like a press or vacuum pot, get a grinder with burrs. If you have an espresso machine, get a very nice grinder with burrs. Amazon has good deals on all three kinds, just do a search for 'coffee grinder'. It's not that much money, and if you're somebody who's willing to pay for Starbucks you should invest in one.
Find a local coffee shop that roasts their own coffee and gives you the date it's roasted on. Freshness matters! Good beans don't taste nearly as good after they've been sitting around.
Ask the people at your local shop to tell you about the correct amount of beans to use. Most people don't use the right amount. If you don't use enough, your coffee comes out bitter, especially if you have a drip machine. Not enough coffee means the beans you do have get too much exposure to hot water, which makes bitter coffee.

Krups 0907163 2 Cup Filter Review

I purchased this to replace a portafilter in a Breville 800ESXL. This filter is well made and makes a more balanced coffee than the pressurized stock filter for my 800ESXL. This produced less creme but with a fine grind and a heavy tamp makes a good amount of creme. The only issues I had were that with more angled side wall I have to double tamp and then add more loose grounds to get the proper level. If the level is too low too much water builds up on top and if too high the pressure builds up and blows the basket out letting plain water run through.

Bene Casa's 6-cup "cafetera," as they call these units in Spain, is an excellent substitute for the WAY over-priced Bialetti. Clearly some folks like the "charm" of being able to say that their "cafetera" was manufacture in Italy instead of China (wher Bene Casa's unit is made), but if the quality of the unit is equivalent, is it worth paying $20 extra for the name? I do not. This is all aluminum, just like Bialetti's, and all three disassembling parts join flawlessly. The espresso made is the same as that by Bialetti's and other "cafeteras." So, unless you have money to burn, buy the Bene Casa brand and you'll enjoy a quality unit that produces the same excellent espresso. Now, if I can only find a 12-cup unit by Bene Casa...

I developed a bad habit of wanting a latte or cappucino everyday. Although I didn't indulge everyday due to expense ($3.50 a latte), I wanted to. Then I saw this little coffee pot advertised, and I got it right away. After I got the knack of putting on the pressure pump, it has delivered for me. In a jiffy, I have the best capuccino or latte at a fraction of my former expense. And it is every bit as good as I got in a coffee shop-- the frothing is excellent. I am so glad I saw this machine and ordered it. My calculation was that it will pay for itself in less than 60 days. This has been my happiest purchase this year. So indulgent, yet so smart to do. And because I bought caffeine-free expresso... I have my drinks day or night... whenever I want.

Bialetti Cuor Di Moka, 3 Cup Polished Aluminum Review

Bialetti Cuor Di Moka, 3 Cup Polished Aluminum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this little pot to make convenient and decent homemade espresso. Yes, I know that it's only steam pressure, so it's not *really* espresso. But, used correctly this little pot does a great job. It produces a dark, concentrated double shot of espresso that satisfies. I generally pour this into a mug and add hot water to make a cafe americano (yeah, I'm not a purist).
But ... and this is a big but, using it correctly is not intuitively obvious. I searched the instructions, the internet and the Bialetti website in vain for guidance because I had problems. That is why I'm posting this review and writing up a set of instructions for using the Cuor Di Moka.
How the Pot Works: Bialetti built this pot with a valve in the stem that cuts off the flow of water from the bottom to the top at a certain point. The goal, as they state it, is to provide just the "heart" of the coffee. It's the certain point that creates the problem.
The Problem: Often I was only getting a tiny portion of coffee--something like half a shot of espresso, instead of the two shots that this little pot should produce. I cleaned the pot, thinking that it was clogged, but got no reliable improvement. I did, at one point, consider setting this pot aside as another mistaken purchase. But, further experimentation brought me to ...
The Solution: What I finally realized is that the certain point where the shut-off valve operates is based on temperature. A couple minor adjustments in how I set up and used the pot now allow me to consistently produce a full double shot of strong espresso. Heat is what causes the valve to shut off the flow of steam through the ground coffee into the receiving chamber. 1) Fill the bottom chamber with very cold water. It doesn't matter how full the bottom is because only half the water gets pushed to the top in any case. 2) Wash out the receiving chamber, and the stem inside which contains the shut-off valve, with very cold water as well. This is the real key. Starting with the valve very cold permits the largest volume of water to pass into the receiving chamber. 3) Use a moderately low temperature on the stove top. I use 4 (out of 10) on my stove. It generally takes 7-9 minutes for the Cuor Di Moka to finish at this setting.
Cold water. Cold stem valve. Low heat. By following these three steps I'm very happy with the coffee produced by this machine.

Cuor di Moka is an innovative stove top espresso maker developed by Italy's premier coffee companies- Bialetti and Illy.Cuor di Moka has an original design and cutting edge technology. An innovative and patented pouring system called "controlled pouring" extracts only the best optimal coffee flavour. The design features a heart- that represents the 'cuor' or 'heart' of the coffee that is produced by the machine.Compared with a traditional moka of the same size, the new Cuor di Moka by Bialetti makes slightly less coffee because not all the water contained in the lower chamber passes through the filter, but only the amount necessary for extracting the best coffee blend, without any extraction dregs. The result is a coffee with excellent organic and flavorful characteristics.

MR. COFFEE? Steam Espresso/Cappuccino Maker - Grey Review

MR. COFFEE Steam Espresso/Cappuccino Maker - Grey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This low-cost, high-value espresso maker makes espresso as good or better than most restaurants. I should note that it can be purchased at Walmart for $29.99 I make perfect espresso daily and my girlfriend has mastered latte's and cappuccino's. Her friends are running out to buy this machine in droves after sampling her concoctions. We were delighted by how well it steams and makes froth. It takes a couple tries to get it all right, but can be mastered with little effort. To have enough steam for frothing, add water to the top of the metal band on the pot and switch from brew function to steam function as the coffee reaches the bottom of the band, this will allow ample steam for anything.
The general concensus has been that the drinks produced are as good as Starbucks or better. We recovered the cost of this espresso maker by the 2nd day of usage. It gets 5+ stars for an overall excellent product (the quality of drinks) and the same rating for overall value. Get one!

European Gift Stainless Steel Cordless Espresso Maker Review

My wife and I were looking to replace our old-fashioned aluminum stove-top espresso maker with something simple yet easier to clean. The aluminum models are a drag--you never know if the temperature is right or how long to let it sit on the stove. They're also nearly impossible to keep clean. The La Pavoni ESP-20 Caffe Mattina seemed like a good choice: it uses electricity, has an auto-shut off function, and it's made of stainless steel. I've used several times now and find the ESP-20 to be exactly as described: it's easy to use, easy to clean, and it brews several cups of smooth espresso in less than ten minutes (depending on the temperature of the fresh water you use). The stainless-steel construction is very robust, and the design is very stylish. As you can see from the advertising photo, this model has a tiny spout that looks, well, impractical. To the contrary, I found this little pitcher to pour very, very well. And my wife thinks it so cute. It costs a bit more than you might expect for something this small and simple, but I think it's a good value. Highly recommended.

First off, I usually don't go out of my way to review a product unless I am very happy with the item. This is a very nice moka pot! After looking at other models I knew I wanted stainless steel and one with a larger cup capacity. The Liberta is made very well with high quality materials. It also comes with an extra gasket and a reducer filter so you can make half of a pot. I received the Bialetti 1-Cup Electric Mukka Express Cappuccino Maker after a very disappointing experience with Krups latest item. Upon returning Krups for a full refund, I was pleasantly surprised by this small machine. What makes this machine so great is:
1-it is easy to use, just add water, espresso grounds, and milk (will even froth fat-free milk!)
2-plug in the base and push the button, then just go about your business as this little miracle brews and froths a tasty surprise for you (it takes 5-6 mintues)
3-easy to pour and wash. No small parts that will break or get lost and the parts seem to be VERY durable
4-the design is very handsome and easy to store on your counter top until next use since it is small thus not taking up much room
I would recommend this product to any casual coffee/cappuccino drinker who enjoys a tasty brew during the week and doesn't want to fork out money to trot to "4 Bucks"

It takes forever to brew regular coffee, and its 99% plastic. Add onto that the spring loaded thing to stop drips while pouring mid brew doesnt work. But the espresso part works great, super fast (unlike the 2+ min it said it needed in the manual). I paid $19 at Christmas Tree shop, so in all honesty, thats why it got 4 stars. If I paid Amazon price of $90 it'd get 1 star

After having Illy at the espresso bars in Italy, well, no other espresso tasted good to me! Illy tastes great made in a good pump espresso machine. It also tastes great made in a steam espresso machine (e.g., a low end Krups) and a Moka (an Italian poor-man's espresso maker). The rich flavor isn't burnt tasting like many espresso roasts. Everyone I've made an Illy espresso for raves over the flavor compard to espresso from chain coffee stores.
I used to buy Illy at the local stores, but the prices were over $11 per can, sometimes $12. I was happy to see Amazon start carrying it at an even lower price.
If you can't find Illy a good runner-up is Lavazza, however, its flavor isn't as intense as Illy.

The Kalorik Aqua Espresso Maker makes an excellent latte. It requires less steps to make the beverage and is much easier to clean than our last few machines. The Kalorik is well made and looks great on your counter. The only problems... and they are not really problems unless you want them to be are: There is no carafe to brew into...
