(More customer reviews)I am an owner of the original Slice, which was shipped well before it was ready for use. Eventually Making Memories issued a "calibration" card to "fix" the machine, after insisting for months that the problems with the machine were all due to "user error." If you are looking for "exact" shapes you won't find them on the original machine, even with the calibration card.
Having said that, the Slice is a pretty good tool for those of us with limited areas for crafting, thus my desire to purchase the new Elite Slice, reported to be faster, quieter and much more accurate. As long as you are satisfied with cuts that are not perfect (which didn't bother me too much) this machine is a good tool.
My new Elite Slice machine arrived on a Friday, I came home from work, plugged it in and after five minutes the blade was no longer retracting and all of the cuts were ruined. I then left the machine plugged in overnight to see if that would help. In addition I adjusted the blade, I put a new blade in, I tried cutting on the mat with my original Slice machine, no problem, so the mat with adhesive was fine as well.
After ruining five pieces of cardstock I gave up and put the machine back in the box. I reported the problem to Making Memories and received an email telling me to adjust the blade, and replace the blade. When I emailed them back to report I had already taken those measures, I was then told that I must have put the adhesive on the mat wrong. I replied again that my old machine cut perfectly fine on the same mat.
Eventually I was told that I needed to "lubricate" the machine by adding some oil to the bottom in the two holes near the blade. Problem was that the Elite Slice does not have these holes (the original Slice does). Additional problem: I asked why I would need to lubricate a brand new machine, I was told that the lubrication evaporates when coming from the factory, but once I oiled the machine (which as I stated before was not possible on the Elite Slice) I would never again have to oil the machine! Somehow I find it hard to believe that the factory oil evaporates, while mine does not.
Making Memories offered to repair my machine, as long as I paid for postage to send it to them. They would "look" at the machine, and send it back to me with some of their products to cover the cost of my shipping. I had sent my old machine back to them and the "product" they sent back did not come close to covering the cost of shipping, and in my case the items were nothing that I would use.
The Elite Slice has a one year warranty, however if Making Memories has to replace your machine you no longer have that one year warranty on the replacement.
I finally was able to get Making Memories to accept the machine back, however I was told I needed to pay to send the machine back to them. Eventually they relented and agreed to send me return postage.
My complaint about Making Memories is that they expect the purchaser of their product to Quality Assure their product, and when there are problems Making Memories puts an added cost onto the consumer by way of shipping.
I have a Kitchen Aid Mixer that stopped working, I called the company, they immediately sent me a new mixer WITH a return, prepaid, shipping label for me to return the faulty mixer. Over and over I have dealt with companies that stand behind their product and pay for shipping, another example: I recently had to return my Cannon Digital Camera to Cannon because a chip went bad in the machine. This was a known problem to Cannon, and even though the camera was three years old, Cannon sent me a prepaid shipping label to return the camera, they fixed it and sent it back to me, at no cost to me.
Again, I would highly recommend that you put off purchasing the Elite Slice for about six months to a year. Making Memories should have the bugs worked out by then, as all those who purchase the machine now will be reporting the problems that Making Memories failed to address in their rush to get the Elite Slice on the market.
If you do go ahead and purchase the Elite Slice now, take heed: if you have problems you will have to pay for shipping, and you may well end up with a shortened warranty.
