The pieces were very cheap, and the rod that inserts in to the geared hole to allow the motor to spin the rollers was not close enough, so the rollers would not spin when turned on. After fooling around with the appliance for 30 minutes while my kids anxiously awaited a cooked hot dog, I finally gave up, reboxed it and cooked them in a pan on the stove!

(More customer reviews)This was a huge hit at my last family get-together. It makes great hot dogs, and does a nice job of keeping everything warm. The directions on how to assemble were awful. My husband had a hard time, because it came with a lot of screws, etc.-it just doesn't go into to detail on how to put it together. It does come with a nice cover for when it's not in use.
Everyone seemed to like making their own hot dog their way. We had a great time with it, and we think it will be a hit at our backyard carnival.

Nostalgia Electrics HDR-565 Old-Fashioned Hot-Dog Roller with Griddle Review

(More customer reviews)Hot dog cooker works as the manual says it does; the only other review on this item says it is malfunctioning junk and not worth the money. I couldn't disagree more. This is my third cooker in four years (I use them a bunch!) and I still love it like the day I first got it.
Takes about twenty minuets to heat up eight hot-dogs, but they are perfect when they finish! If you use "bun length" dogs or decide like me to buy bratwursts and sausages, you will only be able to fit four at a time on the rollers. I usually cook hot-dogs and bratwursts together, so I can fit four hot dogs and four of the larger items.
It's rough to clean the rollers without submerging the roller mechanism in water, however I never had a problem with the cooker because it was "too dirty to function".
The only other downside is that the gears in the roller mechanism is made of what my father calls "cheap pot metal", which tends to grow over time with enough humidity and water. From living in Florida and having washed my grill several times, the gears can eventually locked up on one of my three models.
Other than that, it is a fantastic machine.
(Also, the place to "heat" the buns is the only thing "bunk" about this product. Nice place to store them though!)

(More customer reviews)I could tell my husband had his reservations when he put it on the grill. But our minds were changed when we ate our Nathan's hotdogs. Like ballpark (I mean, where they actually play baseball, people) hotdogs, but better, because we did them over coals. They had a perfectly browned, slightly crisp, skin. Was it a fluke? It was not. Time after time this device has delivered franks of perfection. We wash the metal part in the dishwasher, but the wooden handle in the sink. It now has a brown coating of burnt on grease, but it hasn't affected its performance in any way. Is it worth it? Oh, yes.

Definitely worth the extra cost compared to other similar (but not the same) styles and makes far tastier hot dogs than the steamer style.

(More customer reviews)This hot dog maker is obviously waay cute. It's also a good price. Compared to other cutesy hot dog makers, 8 dogs is a good number. I love the carnival themed umbrella sneeze guard over the dogs, and having that double as a bun warmer was an inspired idea. The poles that hold up the umbrella are nice and sturdy, and it assembles in only 1 minute. This thing has many bonus features:
*Rollers look just like the industrial unit at your local convenience store. They really roll!
*It can also handle 4 foot long dogs and even foot long buns! That's really great because my wife loves those. However, 4 is an anemic number.
*Nostalgia went to the extra expense to include an on/off switch and even a temp control. Temp control should prove useful vs. devices that do not include that.
*This unit includes a griddle attachment for hamburgers/bacon/sausage, etc. I think the unit is too small to be useful for frying hamburgers; you could only do two at a time. The griddle drops in where the rollers would otherwise go, so switching functions is not going to be convenient and will require tools or heat proof gloves if you don't want to wait for a cool-down period.
*The heating element is a beefy rectangular coil that gives good coverage of the cooking area and is directly exposed to the dogs, yielding fast, strong heat.
*The drip tray, griddle, and rollers are all removable for easy cleanup. Love that.
*The rollers are beefy all metal construction - nice.
So that adds up to one very nice unit, of which Nostalgia should be proud. The only real shortcoming I see is that eight dogs, while a good number for a toy device like this, can't stand up to much crowd control. Figure at least two dogs for each child, and three for each man and you're feeding only three to four people per batch. Assume the thing is lightning fast at ten minutes per batch and you see that you're going to need ten of these toys to feed your super bowl party, hahahaha.
Then you have to ask yourself, is this gizmo worth the space? It's pretty big, about the size of a toaster oven. Will you keep it out on the counter and use this special purpose device often (doubtful)? How far back in the closet will it be stored and will you go to the trouble to drag it out to cook up dogs for three people, pack it back up, and re-store it (doubtful)? So is it worth the space? I think it's probably best suited for its intended audience: a party of four kiddos.

(More customer reviews)I looked for a long time to find the right size at a good price, and I think this one is it! It was easy to assemble the cover and attach it to the top. The grill is big enough for 15 to 18 weiners if you have a big crowd, but if you want to cook 4 or 5 that works well, too. It heats up quick, but you have to watch it and turn it down or you'll overcook 'em. I guess that's my only complaint -- the little manual that came with it doesn't completely spell it out as to how long to cook on the higher heat, and then how long you can safely hold them on low.
