Sony ICF-CD73V Shower CD Player/Clock Radio (White) Review

Sony ICF-CD73V Shower CD Player/Clock Radio (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: Reception, Features, all digital, looks, build like a tank.
Cons: Price.
I picked this up to replace a piece of junk Curtis shower radio I bought my wife from Best Buy. She was so dissapointed in the Curtis because no stations would come in on its analog tuner.
The Sony was everything the cheaper Curtis wasn't. It is fully digital including the tuner. It has an external antenna and the reception is great. It sounds great for a littler radio with a even a bit of bass. The auto off feature will let you turn this thing on first thing in the morning and not worry about draining the batteries by leaving it on all day. Aditionally, it comes with a rope strap that will let you hang it from about anything. It is a bit on the heavy side because it is built solid as a rock.
The final word is I am super pleased with this little radio. My only gripe is the price: ... ouch. But if you believe that you get what you pay for...

It's not the icecream, but the family time spent together that makes his item grand! In the winter, I fill the center container with frosting to decorate cupcakes for the holidays. In the fall, we switch to coating and decorating caramel apples. In the summer, I fill the center bowl with salsa or melted cheese, and break out the chips and veggies! AeroGarden Seed Kit Review

AeroGarden Seed Kit

The AeroGarden had been so fun to use, and the Salad Chef Pack is especially gratifying in that I can just pluck a few leaves and put it on a sandwich or make a small salad. The grandkids think this is just the best idea ever. I purchased the AeroGarden for my father who has been a gardener for years. He still loves the outdoor activity of his garden (at 92) but is having a good time with this as well. He shows his great granddaughters how it works, shows them when the plants start growing, has them help harvest, and makes tasty treats for them. Now, how much more fun could you want?

DeLonghi America, Inc IC8000 Ice Creamery 1.5 Qt. Capacity Review

DeLonghi America, Inc IC8000 Ice Creamery 1.5 Qt. Capacity

We purchased our DeLonghi after sampling ice cream made from my Sister-In-Law's Cuisnart machine. Nice fresh ice cream unlike the old days where you had to manually crank a handle...and the results were mixed at best.
Comparing the DeLonghi to the Cuisnart....the DeLonghi is much quiter. And that is a big plus when you have visitors who you don't want to be disturbed and want to entertain. Also the texture of the ice cream is better.
Replying to another customer review appearing for this machine...it DOES make treats with milk and skim milk. All without all the preservatives you will find in over the counter frozen treats from stores. ...
Our first batch didn't turn out great...but it was related to not being familar with our new machine. Ever since...success.
The secret to making a firm treat is to mix your ingredients beforehand and freeze/refrig before adding to the ice cream maker. Add it to the machine and let it work away. Then if you prefer a firmer treat, freeze further for a few hours to overnight.
Another suggestion is to buy the Ben and Jerry ice cream guide. It also states the innovation which I just mentioned above...and gives you many other helpful tips which will solve any issues you might encounter.
Gelato, Sorbet, Ice Cream, Smoothies. All came out well.

Rival GC9155 Gel Canister 1-1/2-Quart 2-Piece Electric Ice-Cream Maker Review

Rival GC9155 Gel Canister 1-1/2-Quart 2-Piece Electric Ice-Cream Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first got this I followed the directions on the box for chocolate cookie ice cream exactly (which specified refrigerating the mixture for 30 minutes and freezing the gel canisters for 24 hours). This gave me something at about the consistency of a runny milkshake. My second try involved refrigerating the mixture for 18 hours and freezing the gel canisters for around 36 hours. That was more of a thick milkshake.
My winning formula was refrigerating the mix overnight and freezing the canisters for a week in a 0 degree (F) deep freezer. This produced fairly soft ice cream, but still definitely ice cream (it did harden in the freezer afterward). I haven't yet experimented to see what the minimum time for a refreeze is, but bringing them down from room temperature the first time took a very long time.
If you want to make smallish batches of ice cream fairly often, then this is the ice cream maker for you. It doesn't require you to get bagged ice to cool the mixture, and the gel canisters collapse to take up less space in your freezer if you just store them there full time. If, on the other hand, you want large batches or only want to make ice cream for special occasions you're probably better off with a bagged ice and rock salt model.

Euro-Pro Triple Canister Ice Cream Maker Review

Euro-Pro Triple Canister Ice Cream Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We bought this unit because we were delighted to find an ice cream maker that allows you to make SMALL amounts, and even better, three different flavors (it allows you to make three distinct pints). We used it relentlessly for two weeks, and couldn't manage to make anything thicker than a milkshake. Worse yet, most of the results, when frozen, were like the unfortunate consequences of melted and refrozen ice cream: you get a sweet treat that's as hard as a rock, and impossible to serve unless you have an icepick and a sledgehammer! We weren't willing to put egg in our recipes, but wondering if that was the problem, we tried a vegan egg replacement product: that ended up our most successful batch, but by that point we'd already felt as if we'd had to fight too hard with the darned thing, and we didn't want to be forced to make only recipes that called for eggs, so we returned it. We just ordered a Cuisinart ICE-20 from Amazon to replace it, because a friend has that same unit and it makes absolutely delicious, perfect ice cream! She's made many recipes _without_ egg, and they come out fine.

AeroGarden 2500-01S Pro 100 with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit Review

AeroGarden 2500-01S Pro 100 with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a remarkable device, one that is a boon to apartment dwellers with no patch of garden, or to anyone who wants an indoor garden that's nearly foolproof.
The Pro 100 has a black shell, stainless steel plate and trim, and a newer feature called "adaptive growth intelligence" which is supposed to automatically monitor water, light, and nutrient delivery for maximum growth. I think it may be a complex timer that is keyed to what type of plant you choose from the front panel (ie, herb, lettuce, tomato) because it seems to demand water the same time every week, though I fill it up whenever I see the level dip below an indicator post inside. The Pro does tell you when to add new nutrient tablets and tells you what phase you are growing--sprouts, new growth or mature plant. I have to say, I have probably a "black thumb." I can grow aloe plants really well, pothos (ubiquitous viney house plant) and I once had a good crop of morning glories but normally, my gardening efforts are pretty sad. I don't trust myself to keep an outdoor herb garden growing.
But I like to cook with fresh herbs, and I got really tired of trying to find chervil, let alone keeping basil and mint from going all black and soft in the fridge. After reading a lot of discussion about the Aerogrow and seeing a tempting sale, I decided to spring for one and try it out. The device is a rounded vessel that holds a pump and water, and a light attached at the top. The surface of the lower vessel has a stainless steel plate with seven wells. You put plastic seed pods in these wells, cover with plastic "bio-domes" and add tablets of nutrient and let 'er rip. The pump feeds the foam in the plug where seeds are embedded. The light encourages the seedlings. Within weeks, you have a crop of various herbs or lettuce or flowers. The "razor blade" of this device is the seed pod. It is a specially designed unit, like a small plastic frame rather like a thimble. It holds foam plastic, split in two. Inside the split, the manufacturer places some seeds and puts a paper collar with the name of the herb on top. The collar serves also to support the plant as it grows taller. The other "razor blade" is the grow bulb, which needs replacing after some months because lights grow dimmer as they are used. Eventually, the grow light is too weak to do its job and you need a replacement. I say "razor blade" because these disposables are unique to the unit and you must purchase them from retailers who sell Aerogarden products. There are master gardener kits with special pods you can use to insert your own seeds--probably a great idea for gardeners who need to get a real jump on the growing season, such as folks in New England where the season can be as short as 60 days. I tried three kits so far: first, I used the gourmet herb kit. This had two types of basil (purple and green), mint, parsley, cilantro, dill and chives. I got a great crop of basil. Enough to share some baggies of this essential herb with my assistant at work. I got a bumper crop of dill, plenty of chives for breakfasts of omelets, and eventually, some viney mint that seems to be of the apple mint variety. Not enough to do tabbouleh salad, but enough to use in drinks and garnish fruits. Only the cilantro failed to grow. No seed even showed a sprout. I called the support number, and very polite folks immediately sent me a replacement and noted they felt it would take more than four weeks to sprout cilantro. Now, some of the herbs are slow to grow (parsley is notoriously slow) but neither pod ever showed a ghost of cilantro. I assume that the seeds supplied to the company might have been mistakenly irradiated food-grade spice seeds and not fresh crop growing seeds. In any case, I got absolutely nowhere with cilantro, a shame, as that is a very tender herb that doesn't keep well. The parsley grew too slowly to be of any real use, as well. But it did grow. I eventually depotted the herbs into a kitchen flower pot (cutting off the plastic frame and leaving on the foam, into which the roots had really made a home.) Then I tried the lettuce. It sprouted in three days and in a month, I had enough to make some light salads and yes, share a bag with the assistant. But it seemed a waste to let the Aerogarden grow something as mundane as lettuce, and I prefer mache (cornsalad, feldsalat) or arugula to leaf lettuce, so I harvested the rest of the crop and started the French Herb kit. This is chervil, sorrel, parsley, chives, Marseilles basil, sage and savory. Everything sprouted immediately except the parsley and chervil, notable slow-pokes of the herb world. I sure like having fresh herbs to hand on the kitchen counter. I can even see the attraction of having three or these mounted on an optional wall rack, but that is quite a luxury. However, a determined gourmet or gardener in a harsh climate or restrictive living setting could satisfy their green thumb with such an arrangement. The customer support is fast and friendly. I have heard stories of failed pumps but mine is quite reliable, and I did have a light give up the ghost way early, and this was cheerfully replaced by customer service. The unit is attractive, easy to use (hey, my black thumb has yet to deter the Aerogarden) and it is a lot of fun to watch the plants grow taller and taller. I'd say this is a great idea for kids as well as cooks who like fresh herbs. As to the other kits, there are a number of them and more are being made available. I can purchase them at my local farmstand-garden shop and that's quite handy. Of course they are also available online. The kits so far that I know of are the French Herb, Gourmet Herb and Lettuce I mentioned and:
Japanese Herb--two colors of shiso, mitsuba, chives, shungiku and cress
South of the Border: Epazote, cilantro, oregano, thyme, parsley, basil
Year Round Gourmet Herb (extra herbs like savory, sage, lemon basil, and the ones in the regular gourmet kit)
Holiday Herb (parsley, sage, oregano, thyme)
International Basil
Italian Herb
Cascading Petunia
Cherry Tomato
Salsa Garden
Beans
Snow Peas
Chili Peppers
More greens (arugula, mesclun, baby greens, chef pack, romaine) And I assume more packs are in the works. All come with nutrient tablets and complete instructions. I give this two (greenish) thumbs up.

It's inexpensive, doesn't have to be plugged in and doesn't need ice or salt--three things plenty of folks are looking for in an ice-cream maker!
The ice cream turns out pretty good (if you use a good recipe!), and it is just the right amount of ice cream for 2-4 people after dinner--just start it about 4 hours before! Also, since it's such a small amount of ice cream, you don't have to worry about hard-to-find additives that will make it still "scoopable" the next day--it will be eaten by then!
It cleans up easily, as long as you don't overfill the cups and rubberband the top on so it doesn't slip.
IT'S STILL CHEAP, THOUGH. I use mine a couple of times a week, and it definitely shows some wear (gears slip occaisionally). In my case, having this machine for a few months has convinced me that I WILL make ice cream often, and therefore a heavy-duty machine will be cost-effective for me.
But for people who will only use the machine a few times a month and are on a budget, this ice-cream maker is ideal!

Prepara PPL1-PP201 Power Plant Professional Review

Prepara PPL1-PP201 Power Plant Professional
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I lucked into a deeply discounted Prepara Power Plant Professional with included grow light and the herb saver at my local Marshall's. I'd never seen one of these before, but I'd tried my hand at various types of indoor hydroponics before, and it looked well designed.
The first thing I must say is this: Aerogarden seed kits cost a lot of money because they make sure the seeds are viable and the whole thing is idiot proof. They pick miniaturized plant types that work well for mini-container gardening, knowing that anyone who plants an indeterminate tomato plant in their product is not going to be satisfied. You can save a lot of money by using your own seeds with the Prepara Power Plant, and I really love that about the product, but you have to make sure the seeds you use are viable. (Nose around GardenWeb and find out how to do that.) If you've bought off-season 10-cents-per-pack seeds at Walmart, and most of your seeds fail to germinate or rot, don't blame the Prepara Power Plant. Also, don't expect seeds that germinate under very different conditions and have different rates of growth and lighting needs to do well together. Lettuce sprouts quickly; cilantro, not so much. You have to understand what the different seeds/plants need. The "foolproof" products that cost a fortune are for people who don't want to have to learn how to garden.
Now, all that said, I think rock wool cubes would work better than the little grow sponges that come with the Power Plant, and I happen to have plenty of those from my last hydroponics experiment. I would start seedlings in the cubes in a seed-starting tray (an old meat tray, perhaps), or maybe a makeshift lettuce-raft type hydroponics setup, then move the strongest plants into the Power Plant when they are ready to really take off. But I have to say that the design of the little pods that hold the plants looks PERFECT for just buying some small herb plants, washing the soil off the roots very well, and trimming them down to work the roots through the holders, sans sponges. That's what I'm going to do with my next batch of plants so I've always got fresh herbs growing in my kitchen.
This is NOT a good product for seed-starting and then transplating the plants to another area. That's what you save your styrofoam meat trays, old cut-up toilet paper rolls, and paper cups for. It's for kitchen herbs and lettuces, maybe strawberries. Green garlic might do nicely in this unit.
I do very much like the way the Prepara Power Plant is designed, and I LOVE the sound of the water running inside of it. It's got all the charm of a feng shui water feature but with the functionality of being able to grow fresh edibles. It fits neatly on my countertop, and the clean lines are quite appealing.
A word of warning: if you have cats in the house, they are going to be absolutely fascinated by the sound of the water inside the Power Plant. They are going to be constantly sneaking up to it and biting off the heads of your young plants when you aren't looking. Don't expect much growth from the Prepara Power Plant if you have cats in your house. But, still, it's a hoot to watch. And if you really want to have a good time, put some catnip plants in your Prepara Power Plant. Multiple trips for multiple cats....

This little device is almost perfect. It's fun to use, and you control the size of chopped garlic you need. (If you're a serious chef and can mince garlic behind your back with your eyes shut, you probably don't need this device.)
The minor drawback is the clean up. There are two components to this little zoom; the garlic compartment and the rotating blade. You need to be careful not to hurt yourself when separating the two and removing your garlic. But, if you're patient in the kitchen (and not accident prone), that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the super cool zoom, Chef'n!

I received this AeroGarden on December 14th and planted it that night. 16 days later, I'm looking at 1/2-1" sprouts from my phlox, petunias and stock. This garden is simple to set up and use- it takes only a few minutes to get it all going. The water circulation pump is pretty quiet, not distracting at all. Maintenance is a snap, you don't really need to do anything but pop in a nutrient tablet and add more water about once every two weeks.
I'm keeping this in my kitchen, I was hoping to keep it in the bedroom so I could have some nice flowers there, but this garden's lights run on a default 17-hours-on, 7-hours-off schedule, and there's no option to change that (other than a manual on/off button that should see only occasional use)- so unless I want very bright light at some point during my sleep cycle, keeping it in certain locations isn't a good idea. There aren't any options for personalization- just a simple on and off light cycle- so if you're looking for customizing the garden for a certain type of plant or certain nutrient cycle, you'll be better off buying a more complex AeroGarden.
Overall, this is an excellent machine, very easy to use and grow with the AeroGarden kits- I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has trouble growing plants in any other medium (like myself)!

GARLIC TWIST CRUSHER, MINCER, PEELER TOOL - CLEAR

I have used this gadget for a year. It makes evenly crushed garlic in seconds. It works best if the garlic clove is cut into at least two pieces first. Several cloves can be done at once. This item seems over priced, since it is just molded plastic. However, I have crushed a lot of garlic with mine and it works fine. I had previously worn or broken at least four metal ones, (three of those were OXO Brand that came with a lifetime warranty). We have given these crushers as gifts and the feedback has been positive. One caveat- it takes a lot of wrist action to use. If you have wrist problems, it would not be a good choice.

Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker 1.5 Quart Bonus 2 Freezer Bowls Review

I researched ice cream makers for about a month before I purchased. The reviews were all over the place, usually the complaint was about the consistency. The consistency has to do with INGREDIENTS, not the machine itself. Thanks to one review I read, I understand that you must use PURE vanilla, not imitation vanilla for the best results -- or leave out the vanilla all together. With the Ice-20 you get a consistent, lovely soft serve quality (not runny, rather like Dairy Queen consistency). Also, using Hershey's syrup instead of melted chocolate makes a nice milk-shake, but not solid enough to be considered ice cream. It's more like a Wendy's Frosty.
I use mine to make frozen yogurt, lower-fat ice cream, and premium ice creams (with egg custard). The custard-based ice creams are the closest to commercial ice cream texture when frozen after the fact. The frozen yogurt and lower-fat content ice creams are best eaten soft serve right away. They tend to freeze hard and get a bit icy when frozen after the fact.
I have grown increasingly concerned with the ingredients in commercial ice cream, and since it's my partner's favorite treat, I wanted to be able to control the ingredients that go into it without paying an arm and a leg. Have you looked at the price of really tasty organic ice cream lately? I use strictly organic ingredients, including a specially developed low-glycemic ice cream sugar and am able to make 1 1/2 quarts of ice cream for under $3. And the taste of commercial ice cream can't compare. Besides buying commercial ice cream in the past, we also bought special toppings. No need now -- the purer the better with the Ice-20. The extra bowl is a great perk, so we can either make two flavors or we can make consecutive batches.
My only concern is the plastic blade. We use this machine daily, and sometimes twice daily, so it gets lots of use. But we take good care of it. Be SURE that the machine is running BEFORE you put the ingredients in -- otherwise you run the risk of freezing the blade and breaking it. However, I'm sure with a great company like Cuisinart behind it that we won't have trouble replacing the blade if that time comes.
In all fairness, though, I understand that you can purchase this same product at Costco for $40. But I dearly love the convenience of Amazon because I live in a remote area.
Enjoy your Ice-20. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me at jadelaine@gmail.com. I also have some great recipes for fabulous tasting, low-fat, low-sugar desserts made with this machine that are not in the machine manual and that rival anything you've ever eaten commercially.
