(More customer reviews)I received this as a Father's Day gift a year ago, and we've made ice cream at least a dozen times since then, most recently two batches over the 4th of July weekend. It works great, and we haven't had any problems with the bucket stretching. The only complaint is that sometimes getting the motor clicked on properly can be difficult. Other than that, this has been well worth our money!

(More customer reviews)it's really simple to use. Compared to the traditional ice cream markers this one doesnt require ice and salt. It mixes the cream until it is stiff enough for freezing. The ice cream texture is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! very little air is blended in with the cream mixture. All in all there is just enough air that the machine allows for the smooth and creamy texture. It's truly worth the purchase. My kids and I love it!

Rival 8804-BL 4-Quart Oval Ice Cream Bucket, Blue Review

(More customer reviews)Works as advertised, makes fine ice cream. Instructions are brief and clear. Well-made for the price. About the size of a small wastebasket, fits easily into one side of a double sink. I think the size is an excellent compromise between the countertop units and the big churns.
The can is thin deep-drawn aluminum with no seams at the bottom to trap salt (like a soda can, but not nearly that thin). People have complained of it getting pinholes from corrosion during storage, but I think this must be from forgetting to rinse all salt from the bucket, or not drying can or bucket thoroughly. I would recommend storing the can upside down in the bucket so that any possible moisture/corrosion will be at the rim where it will do little harm, but the can will still be protected from dents.
The motor is silent but the gear train is noisy, because it's all spur gears. All gears but the final one are die-cast zinc, and the final looks like filled nylon or acetal. Gears and shafts are greased with white grease. I believe they should hold up nicely in home use. Motor is fan-cooled and has a self-resetting overheat protector.
All in all a good, lightweight but honest product that should last well if you get all the salt and moisture off after use.

(More customer reviews)I really love this little ice cream maker. I live alone, but often have an extra for dinner, and this is perfect. I had a larger one from when my kids were all at home, and when it died, I knew I wanted a way to make small batches. Homemade ice cream does not store well. I searched for a long time before I made my decision.
This little one is perfect, and it works like a charm. I keep both bowls in the freezer, so I can make two different flavors if I choose. I can't understand how anyone could claim it is hard to clean. The paddle and lid pop apart easily, and into the dishwasher. The freezer bowls take a swish of hot water, dry them and back into the freezer.
Most important -- it works. I make my own yogurt, and easily make frozen yogurt in minutes with no strange ingredients. I set it running while we eat -- usually takes about 10 minutes. I hop up to take the paddle out, and let it sit until we are ready for dessert. A quick stir, and it is perfect consistency. You can make up to 12 oz in one bowl -- perfect for two people. I especially love that it works equally well when I am making just a tiny amount for just me. If you love to experiment with exotic flavors that may be wonderful or awful (or expensive), you can make tiny batches to perfect your recipe.
I've been making ice cream for over 20 years, and I am having more fun than I ever did with my big machine. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to store, makes great ice cream, and is as cute as can be -- what's not to love.

(More customer reviews)When I first got this I followed the directions on the box for chocolate cookie ice cream exactly (which specified refrigerating the mixture for 30 minutes and freezing the gel canisters for 24 hours). This gave me something at about the consistency of a runny milkshake. My second try involved refrigerating the mixture for 18 hours and freezing the gel canisters for around 36 hours. That was more of a thick milkshake.
My winning formula was refrigerating the mix overnight and freezing the canisters for a week in a 0 degree (F) deep freezer. This produced fairly soft ice cream, but still definitely ice cream (it did harden in the freezer afterward). I haven't yet experimented to see what the minimum time for a refreeze is, but bringing them down from room temperature the first time took a very long time.
If you want to make smallish batches of ice cream fairly often, then this is the ice cream maker for you. It doesn't require you to get bagged ice to cool the mixture, and the gel canisters collapse to take up less space in your freezer if you just store them there full time. If, on the other hand, you want large batches or only want to make ice cream for special occasions you're probably better off with a bagged ice and rock salt model.

(More customer reviews)We bought this unit because we were delighted to find an ice cream maker that allows you to make SMALL amounts, and even better, three different flavors (it allows you to make three distinct pints). We used it relentlessly for two weeks, and couldn't manage to make anything thicker than a milkshake. Worse yet, most of the results, when frozen, were like the unfortunate consequences of melted and refrozen ice cream: you get a sweet treat that's as hard as a rock, and impossible to serve unless you have an icepick and a sledgehammer! We weren't willing to put egg in our recipes, but wondering if that was the problem, we tried a vegan egg replacement product: that ended up our most successful batch, but by that point we'd already felt as if we'd had to fight too hard with the darned thing, and we didn't want to be forced to make only recipes that called for eggs, so we returned it. We just ordered a Cuisinart ICE-20 from Amazon to replace it, because a friend has that same unit and it makes absolutely delicious, perfect ice cream! She's made many recipes _without_ egg, and they come out fine.

(More customer reviews)This is the first time we have ever used an electric ice cream maker, so I have nothing to compare to. The motor keeps popping off when ice gets jammed around the can. I'm beginning to think the oval bucket is a bad design - there is no room for ice on the front or back, and that's where the ice gets jammed. Are we doing something wrong?
Otherwise, the ice cream came out fine. We had to stand there and hold the motor on.

(More customer reviews)Are the materials cheaply produced? When we took it out of the box, we were blown over by the chemical smell. After soaking the wooden tub, it went away, but my sinuses were burning by then.
Then we made the ice cream and that part was fun. But the motor stopped before the ice cream was frozen. Also, a disappointing thing happened - I could taste an aluminum aftertaste in the ice cream from the aluminum bowl. The ice cream literally tasted like aluminum foil. We have to take this back for a refund. We are looking for one with a steel bowl now.
Overall, a disappointing experience. I gave it one star because that was the only way to proceed making the review.

You freeze the bowl, make your mix of whatever you want, and just pop it on and you have soft ice cream in 5 minutes, thicker ice cream in about 10 minutes. Makes 1 large bowl of ice cream, but you can make two batches with the double bowl. Also this doesn't take a whole lot of space up, so it's good if you don't have a whole lot of storage (which I don't). I can't wait to make fruit sorbet and smoothies with fresh fruit in the summer. I really like this because you control all the ingredients, so it's really good if you have food allergies, or diet restrictions. You could make fruit sorbets with spenda or honey - so this would be great if on a diet. The only thing, this doesn't mash fruit - so if you want to make something with fruit and want it really smooth, run it through a blender first. I just chopped a banana really small and it made for some great chunky banana ice cream :) Definetly worth the money- Great Buy!

(More customer reviews)I ordered this item directly from [...] and it isn't the item that is the problem it is [...] I thought I was getting a set of 4 ice cream cups, and 4 ice cream spoons since there are 4 members of my family I thought this would be great as we are purchasing an ice cream maker as well. When I received my order it was the 2 ice cream cups and 2 ice cream spoons. I called the 1-800-257-0008 number and the lady I spoke with stated that it was shown wrong online and the she would definitely let the person that handles that to change it but there is nothing she can do. I asked if I could return it so that I could find the 4-pack elsewhere and she stated I would have to pay shipping to return it. It already cost me 7.95 to ship the darn thing and they expected me to pay more just to return it? It would cost me more to ship it back then it would to just keep it. I am extremely unhappy with [...] and their resolution for the problem. I want to warn everyone not to do business with a company that will do nothing to resolve mistakes that they make especially when it is a Christmas present that is only 1/2 of what it was supposed to be.

(More customer reviews)This design was given to me as a gift, replacing a Krups La Glaciere that had worked well for a few years before the coolant began leaking into the freezing chamber. In terms of freezing and mixing ability - the only real differences between ice cream makers at this low-end level - the Cuisinart works very well. In fact, it seems to hold its temperature longer than the Krups model, perhaps due to the extra bit of insulation afforded by "freezing chamber in bucket" design. Also, for those familiar with the Krups, the Cuisinart actually rotates the bucket rather than the dasher; odd at first, but it works fine, and allows for faster assembling of the component parts when you're starting the freezing process. The only (minor) complaint I have is that, if you are making a sizable batch, the ice cream frequently starts to pour over the top of the dasher as it expands, even if you follow the instructions for how high the freezing chamber should be filled. It doesn't spill out of the unit, however, and the freezing process doesn't seem to be significantly disturbed. In short - the Cuisinart is worth the buy, and will produce ice cream that's as good as your recipe allows.

(More customer reviews)It's inexpensive, doesn't have to be plugged in and doesn't need ice or salt--three things plenty of folks are looking for in an ice-cream maker!
The ice cream turns out pretty good (if you use a good recipe!), and it is just the right amount of ice cream for 2-4 people after dinner--just start it about 4 hours before! Also, since it's such a small amount of ice cream, you don't have to worry about hard-to-find additives that will make it still "scoopable" the next day--it will be eaten by then!
It cleans up easily, as long as you don't overfill the cups and rubberband the top on so it doesn't slip.
IT'S STILL CHEAP, THOUGH. I use mine a couple of times a week, and it definitely shows some wear (gears slip occaisionally). In my case, having this machine for a few months has convinced me that I WILL make ice cream often, and therefore a heavy-duty machine will be cost-effective for me.
But for people who will only use the machine a few times a month and are on a budget, this ice-cream maker is ideal!
