I am a coffee snob and have been looking for a replacement for my Cusinart grind and brew (which sucked!) which we got as a wedding present. I searched and read tons of reviews of all the machines available and wanted to spend around $100 for a quality machine. I bought this coffee maker from Bed Bath & Beyond using their 20% of coupons to meet my budget.
I just tried out the maker for the first time this morning and absolutely love the look, quality taste and long life of the hot brew!!!
Reasons I chose this machine over others were:
1. Thermos Carafe, which keeps the coffee hot w/out scorching the coffee taste.
- The opening of the Carafe was large enough to get your hand in there for easy cleaning.
- The easy pour carafe which doesn't require you to push any button or twist the top to pour yourself a cupa
- Coffee stayed hot even after 2 hours after brewing and tasted freshly brewed!!!
2. The grounds basket allows the use of the gold filter or paper. It is flat bottom basket which brews the grounds more evenly and results in better tasting coffee. There is a shower water dispenser which aid in the even water distribution.
3. The timer for programming morning coffee before work
- There is a beeper which tells you when the brewing cycle is complete (this prevents against dribbling messes on the machine base when removing the carafe to pour a cup. The beeper is also by signal when getting ready in the mornings that there is 15 minutes before I have to hit the road!!
- There is a delayed drip to pour a cup if your in a rush for your fix ;o)
- There is an indicator which shows how much time has laps since the last brew
4. Easy to clean!!
- The Cusinart Grind'n Brew was a pain in the arse to clean between brews cause the grinder will get moist during the brewing process and leave ground sludge in the grinder section!
- The grounds basket in top shelf dish washer safe but the carafe must be hand washed which is no big deal because of the design of the lid and opening size is big enough to stick your sponge and hand inside.
- Control buttons are flat and easy to wipe clean
5. It looks sleek and classy!!! Looks great on the countertop!!!
- The design fits great under cabinets and the front water pour section allowed you to fill the reservoir easily w/out having to move the machine around to reach it.A few Tips for Thermal Carafe Users:
- Preheat your thermal carafe to extend heat retention by filling with piping hot water from the sink for a few minutes before starting the brew process! People complain about these machines not keeping their coffee hot enough or for as long as claimed but it because people don't follow directions!!!
- (to the previous reviewer) heat your cup of milk in the microwave for 30-40 second before pouring a cup of coffee to maximize the temp... its not rocket science to know that adding cold liquid to hot liquid will cool the over all temp ESPECIALY if you tend to had a lot of milk like I do!!!

KitchenAid JavaStudio 14-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Review

This coffee maker worked & looked great the 1st few months. Several times we got up to coffee all over the counter. After 1 year the error code came up that you had to call Kichenaid (Whirlpool). They quickly sent another - it worked for about 3 days, the same error code came up & they quickly sent another. It worked for about 2 months, spilled twice so quit using the programmer - Whirlpool actually called us to see how things were going. Told them about the spills and they sent a new lid for the pot that had been designed. It did work better but again the error code came up. Called them again & they sent yet another replacement. Same problems with the coffee all over the counter & the newer lid. Gave up, dumped it and bought a really nice 14 cup Cuisinart - about 1 year now & it's working fine with no spills. I will say Kitchenaid/Whirlpool customer service agents were extremely nice & helpful.

With its sleek contemporary styling and stainless-steel accents, this 14-cup coffeemaker not only looks good on the kitchen counter, but it also makes it easy to brew a rich, flavorful pot of coffee. The unit's electronic control regulates the powerful 1100-watt heat pump, while its extra-wide JavaSpa showerhead soaks the filter basket evenly with hot water to ensure uniform extraction and enhanced flavor. Thoughtfully designed, the appliance also provides a user-friendly control panel with a digital display, a 1- to 4-cup brew cycle for smaller batches, and a programmable clock/timer that allows for brewing "wake-up" coffee. A dishwasher-safe glass carafe comes included, complete with a comfortable stay-cool handle, measuring marks up the side, and a drip-free pour spout. For sneaking a quick cup of coffee midbrew, simply remove the carafe from the machine to pause the flow of coffee, then replace the carafe to continue the brewing process--a nice feature, particularly for those in a hurry for that first sip. Other highlights include a split lid for easy access to the brew basket and water reservoir, a Clean Touch control pad, an end-of-brewing audible tone, stylish wrap-around housing that minimizes heat loss from the carafe, two-hour automatic shut-off for safety and peace of mind, and convenient cord storage to help keep countertops looking tidy. Accessories include a gold-tone permanent coffee filter (no need for paper filters), 10 unbleached paper filters (for the option to use paper filters), a coffee scoop, and an ion-exchange water filter to reduce chlorine and other contaminants from the water, helping to ensure a delicious cup of coffee. Available in a variety of colors, the coffeemaker measures 11-1/2 by 8-1/4 by 13-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I received this coffeemaker as a Christmas gift and was initially skeptical of the thermal carafe being able to make hot coffee and the basket-style filter. After using the maker for a week, I have to say my skepticism was unjustified. This machine makes great-tasting coffee that is as hot as I could want it. I never liked the "cooked" coffee that regular, glass-carafe makers produced - burned tasting after the first cup. The coffee from this machine is consistent from the first cup to the last. I fill the carafe with hot water, mill my beans and fill the reservoir, empty the carafe and enjoy. After two hours, the coffee was still hot. One great feature not highlighted is the front-fill aspect: Kitchenaid designed the top with a channel to fill the reservoir by pouring the water from the front, right next to the filter. No more struggling to pour water in the back and see the water level. Extremely convenient.
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer - this machine makes ten 5-ounce cups. After reading the review, I double-checked the carafe capacity against my old Krups machine: exactly 10 cups; more than enough for our household. All in all, a great-looking, great-performing coffeemaker that meets Kitchenaid's high standards. I highly recommend it.

I really wanted to like this coffee maker. We've tried several and thought this one was the answer but unfortunately, we need to keep looking.
The problems are:
1. Coffee produced is not that hot. I expected more, especially with a pre-heated carafe.
2. As someone else noted, the carafe will pour even in the "closed" position. This indicates an air leak-- something that will chill the coffee much more quickly.
3. Pour spout is not good and a lip overhang means that the last drop is virtually impossible to get out.
4. The indicator for the timer is very hard to see.
5. The water holder, while convenient to remove, is very hard to level. And, there is a hole in the tank to prevent over filling. Unfortunately, it means clean up of spilled water.
6. The handle was crooked (not a major issue but annoying to look at on a $129 coffee maker).
Made good coffee, especially in small batches, but lots of machines will do that. Shame it had too many flaws to overcome.

KitchenAid 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker Review

KitchenAid 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker

I originally ordered this coffee maker from another retailer in August. Waited and waited. Finally cancelled when Amazon had it available. First pot of coffee was made without pressing bold button. Coffee was weak and temperature was cooler than I expected. By second cup, I would describe the temperature as warm but certainly not hot. Also, I typically make 4 cups of coffee for myself. This coffee maker has a button labeled 1-4 cups which you are supposed to press to make less than 4 cups. I thought perhaps it would raise the water temperature for smaller quantities. It doesn't appear to do anything. I contacted KitchenAid who stated that the brew water temperature should be 200 degrees and that the bold button only changes the way hot water is delivered (small spurts, longer wait time). They also stated that the 1-4 cup button would allow you to make a maximum of 4 cups of coffee even if the reservoir is full. I used a very accurate electronic thermometer to measure the water temperature at the basket which was 172 degrees which is a far cry from 200 degrees. Coffee temperature in the thermal carafe was 165 degrees after 20 minutes. Contacted KitchenAid who said it was defective but because it was "so new" they didn't have any replacements. Contacted Amazon who agreed to replace machine at no charge and did so in record time. Second machine functioned exactly the same as first although water temperature at the basket was 2 degrees hotter. Returned 2nd maker. For $100 kitchenAid could and should do much much better. Save your money. I eventually bought a Mr Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT with optional thermal carafe. 1/2 the price and twice the function. You can use either thermal carafe or glass and coffee maker automatically adjusts by turning hot plate on (glass) or off (Thermal). Water temperature measures at 189 degrees at basket and thermal carafe keeps coffee warm longer.
