Singer Serger 14CG754 Serger Overlock Review

Singer Serger 14CG754 Serger Overlock

Purchased this item from a retail JoAnns' It was 249.99 on sale, came threaded.
I had to play around with the machine more than I used it, read the reviews here and on JoAnns' site and decided there was a better Serger out there.
Bought a Brother from Amazon, JoAnn only sold Singer.

Now, in defense of the Singer serger machine, it has a much heavier material cutter, less oiling and a heavier steel shaft, collar combination, than the Brother.
Also, when the Singer was serging it did an extremely good job of overlocking, better than the Brother, in my opinion.
After I became used to the Singer form of threading it wasn't as bad as most of the reviews made it sound.

Janome MyLock 204D Serger Overlock Review

Janome MyLock 204D Serger Overlock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sergers are amazing, frustrating machines. This is the only one I have ever used, but I am assuming that such a complex machine, regardless of manufacturer, is difficult to learn to use. I am not an everyday sewist, and I would say this machine sees about 5 projects a year.
This machine is kind of built for a beginner. It is relatively easy to change from seams to rolled edges. It is easy to remember how to thread, however the provided thread was not high quality and I replaced it soon after learning to thread. Troubleshooting problems was a pain in the neck because after you re-thread the lower looper 5 times and the thread breaks AGAIN, you just want to go back to your little regular machine and zigzag your edges. Then you remember the differental feed, which is a pretty sweet deal, and you re-thread the lower looper after adjusting the tension.
Honestly, this is alot more machine than I need as it is just a toy for me. I would not recommend a serger if you are a hobby sew-er, unless you have alot of patience, and are bored with the 24 stitches your regular machine can achieve. That being said, if you are into knitwear or quilting, a serger (this serger) could be a dream come true.

The previous reviewer obviously has no idea how to use a serger if it took an hour to thread and was that difficult to operate. This machine works very well. Easy to use and the dvd that comes with it is very good. I would highly recommend this serger. I got on sale for $199 at Sears and have been very happy with it.

Juki 2-Needle, 2/3/4/5-Thread Overlock Machine MO-735 Review

Juki 2-Needle, 2/3/4/5-Thread Overlock Machine MO-735
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched for nearly two years before deciding on getting the Juki MO735 5 thread two needle serger with coverstitch. What I found with the Juki is a solidly build mechanical machine that has all the stitches I wanted in a serger but most importantly, the quality of stitches that are superb, balanced and even. It is easy to thread compared to other brands without the jet air. The lower looper has a threading helper built into the machine which places the thread exactly where it needs to be in a hard to reach elbow of the looper. It is very easy to switch to rolled hem, a simple switch slides the stitch finger to a narrow setting, an adjustment to the cutting width, stitch length made for fast conversion. It has lay-in tension discs which aid in the ease of threading. I find the standard tension settings to work for most of the stitches which means there is near zero fiddling with the tension to get the stitches to look balanced. There is no auto tenion feature but no big deal. If I sew with heavy threads or fabric, then adjustment is necessary and to be expected. Chain stitch threading is easy and located to the left side of the machine. Coverhem is also beautiful. At first I had trouble with threading for coverhem but that was more to operator error than the machine. The machine comes with two packs of needles. The Juki uses both household 103/705H and JLx2 needles for coverstitch. The household needle capacity is a huge bonus & JLx2 needles can be found at CTUSA, Amazon, and most Bernina Dealers. A nice vinyl pouch with accessories comes standard including spool caps, thread nets, screw driver, and coverhem pressure foot. Also clip-on waiste bin, small tube of sewing machine oil, a pack of JLx2 serger needles, a pack of Schmetz Univeral needles and coverhem extension plate, Inside the Looper Cover there is handy storage for tools including pack of needles, small screw driver, tweezers, upper looper converter, needle threader, and needle inserter/lint brush. If I had any critique of the Juki MO735 would be the Instruction Manual. In my research I learned this to be a problem, that the manual is not intuitively laid out. However, there is a threading chart to be found at AllBrands website, if you look at Juki MO735 there. It should have a pdf link to save and download. I found this to be absolutely essential when learning to thread this machine because the diagrams are large enough to define detail which is hard to see in the Juki manual. Once I threaded the machine a half dozen times in various stitch patterns, it was very easy to learn new threading variations. As a promotion through Juki, my machine came with eight additional pressure feet including a blind hem foot, an elasticator, gathering, beading, curve/pearl, cording, and piping foot. Normally, the pressure foot accessories are optional and cost about $200 for the entire set of 8. Maintenace is straight forward. I regularly, after every sewing project or every day of use, clean away lint which accumulates easily; oiling is required in two specific places on the upper looper arm. The manual is very clear about maintenance. Finally, to get perspective, I am fairly new to the world of sergers, though have been sewing for many years. I was not in the least intimidated by this machine. Btw, I discovered that Juki makes Bernina sergers and the Bernina 1300 is the equivalent model to the MO735. One can obtain a Bernina Workbook for the 1300MDA, if that is helpful. As I add more hours using it, I will return to update my experience.
One Year Later... I can not say enough good things about this serger. It has and continues to be a consistant and reliable performer. I have virtually no problems with this machine. It handles every sewing project I throw at it with ease. The quality of stitching, will never cease to amaze me. One of the best sewing investments I have made.

This is my first serger. I'm thrilled with the instructional video it came with, the easy to use manual, and the quality of this machine. Nancy recommends practicing threading daily until you're comfortable. It didn't take long! Adjusting tensions is also clearly explained. It has a number of features I couldn't get without spending much more money and comes with lots of accessories. I easily found the needles online too. I can hardly wait to try out all the stitches this machine is capable of. I'm an experienced seamstress but a novice about serging. I feel confident I'll be able to use the EZ Lock without difficulty. I'm very happy with the speed and simplicity sewing is now. I'll always have my sewing machine - but boy am I glad I finally bought a serger!

Brother SA212 Serger Elastic Application Foot Review

Brother SA212 Serger Elastic Application Foot

Well first off the little instructions that came with the foot are LACKING, and than the foot its self was kind of dissapointing, it doesnt put much tension on the elastic so you still need to put gentle tension on the elastic. I have decided to make a casing for elastic instead of using the foot whenever possible but its better than a zig zag.

I bought this for my 13 year old daughter 3 months ago, and she has been using it quite a bit. She designs and makes costumes, and was able to figure out how to use it without any help from me. She has made about 15 items on the machine, and it seems to be working very well for her, no complaints at all. I got her the gathering foot, and it will make small gathers, but not big bunchy ones, she uses the regular machine with manual gathering for that.

Heavy Duty Serger Overlock Carrying Case Review

Heavy Duty Serger Overlock Carrying Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On the positive side: The size of the case is perfect for a serger. It is wide enough, with ample room for the serger, the serger's accessories pouch, cords, foot pedal, and for the four thread cones once the supporting thread stem of the serger is lowered.
On the negative side: The plastic with which the case is made of is not rigid and the bottom of the carrying case which I received was curved inwards front and back. The cover did not fit snug over the base. Due to the bent base, there was a 1/2 inch gap in the front and in the back of the case when I placed the cover. Moreover, the two locks of this "heavy duty serger overlock carrying case" are not as sturdy as those of the 5300 Brother Universal carrying case. When I received my serger's carrying case, it had already received a hit, possibly during transport. and the cover's molded plastic hook on one side was broken. Those plastic hooks on the left and right which are an extension of the cover, support the two metal locks. They appear to be weak spots. In my opinion, the 5300 Brother Universal carrying case is by far sturdier, and its two locks seem to be more reliable.
One final note: As soon as I reported the damaged case, the company that sold me the case via Amazon.com were very courteous and they immediately credited my account. As a result, I bought the 5300 Brother Universal carrying case instead, and I am very happy with the 5300 model.

Gosh, after paying a whole lot more for this seemingly professional serger, it started falling apart--literally--after the first few days. The machine vibrates, shakes, rattles--is very difficult to keep steady even after placing it on my heaviest and sturdiest table. Then the upper looper started yanking the thread out of the needles. This one's going back. Problem is, I don't know what to get next. So I am going to try for the Reliable Dreamstitcher. We'll see.

Purchased the serger as a gift for my wife and she was very excited! Works very well and the price was the same or better than ANY other site, nice not having to shop around. It did everything it said it did and was not a disappointment. The video it came with was a little outdated but very quick and easy in describing what it can all do. I purchased Juki because of the quality in the name brand and not the functions, but from what I hear from my wife it does everything she could need. If you buy the extra feet (like all sergers) than it could do even more. Value for the money, compact and well made.

JUKI MO654DE Portable Serger Review

JUKI MO654DE Portable Serger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my fifth serger and, so far, my favorite. For the last five years I have mostly sewn on a Baby lock Imagine, and then a Baby Lock Evolve. These are excellent, very easy to use sergers, but very expensive. In addition, I found the Evolve, the one I used the most, had trouble going over thick seams. When the Evolve was getting serviced earlier this year I bought a vintage Juki (MO-104) and loved it but decided I needed a more modern one with differential feed and a rolled hem.
This Juki has it all. It is very stable--never moves around when you're serging--has a wonderful knife set-up that cuts through anything smoothly, and has a beautiful rolled hem, either two or three thread. It doesn't have the jet air threading of the Baby Locks, but threads easily. Everything is color-coded. The tensions are also very easy to set. I haven't had any problem with them at all.
I would advise you also to order a good, basic serger book because the instruction book with this Juki doesn't explain how to make the variety of stitches that are possible with it. With most of them you just have to tweak the tensions or stitch length or width, all easy to do on this machine. The electronic, high end machines (that go for a thousand dollars or more) will either make these adjustments automatically, or tell you how to do them on the screen, but I find a good serger book works just as well, and is much, much cheaper.
Do be aware that this machine does not have a coverstitch, or coverhem, as it is sometimes called. It's the two or three thread stitch used to hem knits. To get this stitch you need to buy an expensive, high-end combo serger, or a separate coverstitch machine. I like having a regular serger, this one in particular, and a separate coverstitch machine, like the Janome CP 1000.
This is shipped from Ken's Sewing Center, a store with an excellent reputation in the sewing community. Mine arrived quickly in perfect shape, but had there been a problem I know Ken's would have taken care of it.
Really, this serger is an amazing deal. Juki is an excellent brand; I understand they make the Bernina sergers as well.
Update: When I reviewed this serger it was $399.00 and was shipped by Ken's Sewing Center. I see now that the price and vendor have been changed. It is still an excellent serger but not quite as good a deal now.

Brother 1034D 3/4 Lay-In Thread Serger Review

Brother 1034D 3/4 Lay-In Thread Serger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think if you're looking at this machine, you're either a) new to serging or b) impressed by the price and interested in the quality. I'm completely new to sergers, but I did my homework before buying this one, and for the price and the performance, this serger has a perfect balance.
I was also concerned about being able to figure out how to use it on my own (so many people talk about taking a class) but within a day I felt like I knew it inside and out. It's setup is uncomplicated and I was able to get right to work. There's something to be said about passing over the machine that can "do it all" and buying one that just does what you need.
1) The "how-to" videos are wonderful for the visual learner. You can pick up the same knowledge from the thorough instruction book(s) included, but the videos reinforce the book. Watching the video on "threading" once, and following the line drawings on the machine itself, I was able to thread the machine in 5 minutes. (It's really not that hard - it's all color coded and the steps are numbered, but the videos help)
2) Included are two additional feet, one for a blind hem/flatlock and another for gathering ruffles as you sew. Together, they themselves are an $60 value. The feet are "snap-on" (when I read about that online I instantly thought of breakable plastic, but the feet are primarily metal with some plastic pieces on the blind hem foot) - the "snap-on" construction is very easy to use and solid (i.e. nothing is going to snap OFF over time)
3) It's very easy to set the tension and the manual has a very clear chart on troubleshooting uneven stitches (with 4 threads, there are multiple things that can be off with the tension).
4) The company description says that it does 22 stitch functions, which I think is a little misleading (it does the basic stuff and they show different applications for the basics).
THIS IS WHAT IT DOES:
1. 3/4-thread overlock (uses 4 threads; best for use with knits or upholstery fabric)
2. 3-thread overlock (general use) in two widths - 3mm (using only the right needle) and 5mm (using only the left)
3. Rolled hem (great for edges of napkins, pajama bottoms, frilly skirts, etc)
4. Flatlock stitch (decorative or flat seams)
5. Blind hem
THIS IS WHAT IT DOESN'T DO:
1. Coverlock stitch (stretchy stitch with two straight lines on the front of the fabric). If you're sewing for yourself (i.e. not selling what you make), you can fake this stitch on your regular zigzag sewing machine with a twin needle. It's not quite the same, but close enough for me.
2. Chain stitch (a semi-straight stitch, similar to a regular sewing machine but easier to rip out (i.e. good for basting) and a good reinforcement for upholstery)
Other sergers I looked at that did the coverlock stitch in addition to overlock, etc. had complicated and time consuming adjustments to be made to switch to the coverlock. If you're going to use it a lot, consider getting a separate machine that does it (the Brother model is 2340CV).
The one feature the 1034D is missing for me is the ability to do a 3-thread overlock and a chain stitch at the same time - good for upholstery but something available only on a 5 thread machine.
5) Nice little things:
1. You have the option of using regular thread spools (cheaper and smaller if you don't need 1000 yards x 4 of whatever color you're buying)
2. You use regular needles - so you can use them in both your regular sewing machine and your serger
3. It's really easy to control speed with the foot pedal - very responsive
4. Disabling the knife (that trims your fabric as you sew) is done with just the flick of a switch
5. Differential feed allows you to sew any thickness of fabric, line up stripes evenly, etc.

The Brother 1034D Serger features a 3/4 lay-in thread system with lower looper threader. Stitch options include 4 thread overlock, 3 thread overlock, narrow hem, rolled hem, and ribbon lock stitches. Additionally you can sew blind hem, pin tuck and flat lock stitches by purchasing optional presser feet. The machine has a free arm/flat bed convertible sewing surface. The 1034D also offers a F.A.S.T. lower looper threading system for easy thread changes. The differential feed improves sewing results on stretch or thin fabrics to give you a perfect finish. Snap-on presser feet allow quick and easy changes to transition to each desired stitch. The 1034D also includes an instructional video tape to make serging fast easy and fun.

Singer 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger Sewing Machine Review

Singer 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger Sewing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this item at Walmart for $229 and was excited to begin sewing my first project. That was a huge mistake. The thread kept popping out of the tension on #3 no matter what I did. I tried tightening it several times, went back to directions repeatedly looking for what I could have done wrong, though everything appeared to have been done correctly. To finish the initial project I was sewing I ended up having to hold thread #3 by hand to create the right tension to finish sewing. Thank goodness for dexterity! The other major problem I had was the machine jumped around a lot on my sewing table as it sewed. It didn't weigh enough to hold it in place, nor were there any suction cups on the bottom to keep it stable. I ended up having to chase the machine down while I was holding thread #3! I'm sure it all looked quite comical, but it was WAY too much of a hassle for me. I returned the item to Walmart, got my money back and went to a local sewing shop and found a Janome serger that didn't cost too much more. The Janome threads beautifully with perfect tension and has little suction feet to hold the machine in place while sewing. Going from the Singer to the Janome in the same day made it very clear to me what a cheap piece of junk the Singer is. As a side note, I asked the repairman at the sewing shop about the Singer and he says he won't carry them anymore because they break too often. 3 Months later and I haven't had a single problem with my Janome!
