The replacement carafe isn't *quite* the same--the handle is slightly different and it's a bit larger, so that the original lid doesn't snap in firmly. Make sure you keep your lid, as this one does NOT come with the lid! All in all, a good replacement. I am pleased.

(More customer reviews)I owned the red-colored convex variation of this tamper.
I was initially happy with this tamper, but after a little bit over 3 months of use it broke apart as I was tampering coffee. An e-mail exchange with the retailer revealed that this is a know issue with this model of the tamper -- the tamper breaks if dropped. I have to agree that I probably dropped the tamper a couple of times during the time I used it because it rolls away so easily...
My expectation for any kitchen gadget/tool is that it should be sturdy enough not to break apart even if it felt from the counter. There are plenty of kitchen tools made of plastic that don't break so easily.
If you are not prepared to baby your espresso tamper, then do yourself a favor and get a more robust product.

(More customer reviews)I did not believe that a good tamper can make a big difference to the quality of espresso untill I tried this one. I purchased size 53 mm for my starbucks barista machine. It looks very nice. The stainless steel is a mirror like finish. The wood handle is a perfect size and finish. It fits exactly the portafilter of my machine. When I use it I can prepare amazing esprsesso each time. Highly recommended.

Red 49mm Espresso Tamper Stainless Steel Coffee Review

(More customer reviews)I have a DeLonghi EC155 and the inside diameter of the portafilter basket is 51mm. Many larger machines have 53 or 58mm baskets so these larger tampers won't work with the EC155. I couldn't find any 50 or 51mm sizes, so I ordered this 49mm size. It works perfectly, no problems whatsoever. Much more convenient than using the attached plastic tamper on the machine. The problem with that is that you must push the basket UP to compress the coffee while holding your other hand on top of the machine to hold it down. Much, much easier to just push down with this tamper. Also, this is a substantial tool, made of 18/8 Stainless Steel and weighs in at almost a half-pound (7.5 oz or 212 g). Unlike aluminum alloys, this will not discolor in the dishwasher.

This tamper is heavier than my friend's Reg Barber (shockingly heavy actually), and in my opinion has nicer workmanship. For the price this HAS to be the best tamper on the market.

(More customer reviews)If you're a home barrista and you want to tamp your coffee this tamper works well. It's not too heavy and fits nicely in your hand, giving the tamped espresso that final spinning polish is not a problem either. It's not milled out of one piece of aluminum, I had to tighten the two pieces after about two weeks (from the spinning?). Make sure you get the right size. If your tamper is too small it's hard to exert the right amount of pressure without the grounds pushing their way up and making a mess. This is a good tamper for the price, no nonesense, no frills but does what it's supposed to.

It is funny how the plastic tampers that come with the espresso machines never really fit. This one is nice and solid. The handle has a good knob to grab onto and it is so nice to pack a shot right.
