I had talked myself into buying a small rear-tine tiller (my back cannot take the abuse from a large front-tine version) and then I saw this little gadget for ~$200 less. At first I didn't think there was anyway it would be up to the task, but after a fairly thorough literature and market review I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did.
It cut through the sod with no problems as well as a number of finger thick roots. It only bogged down briefly before it spit out a 1/4 of a brick that it dredged up from the soil.
Pros:
Extremely lightweight--I can carry it with one hand
Very maneuverable--should make cultivating an easy chore
Reasonable cost
4-cyle, no gas/oil to mix
Doesn't take up a lot of storage room
Fairly quiet
EASY ON THE BACK
Removeable tines--quick and easy cleaning
Cons:
Small tilling width--takes more time per square foot tillage
Fast idle on running tank dry--SAFETY ISSUE (more on this below)
I was allowing the tank to run dry while I finished the raking and planting. Suddenly the idle began to run up as the tank ran out; when it did the centrifugal clutch engaged and the tiller tried to take off. Admittedly it wouldn't have gone far because it ran out of gas almost immediately after I snagged the handle, but it is something to consider.
Bottom line: I would not want to do a large garden with it. Mine is 5' x 15' and took me about 3 hours to till, rake and plant. At the end of that time I was still in pretty decent shape, pleasantly tired, but not beat up.

I purchased this edger at my local Home Depot, used it and returned it that day. It simply does not have the power to edge. The blade stops rotating when the engine is under load. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more to get a low end McLane model, you will be glad you did

I have had my McLane edger since 1974. The new ones are built virtually the same as mine with the exception of different wheels. I have had no problems with mine at all. If you take care of things, they will take care of you. I have used this edger just about every Saturday since 1974 and it performs great. I have seen no engineering problems like the previous poster said. Maybe his was assembled incorrectly. Very dependable edger and it will probably last me the rest of my life.

Weed Eater RTE115C 15-Inch 4.5 Amp Twist-N-Edge Electric String Trimmer Review

Weed Eater RTE115C 15-Inch 4.5 Amp Twist-N-Edge Electric String Trimmer
Average Reviews:

I purchased this weed eater a few months back. It is very powerful for an electric, so that is a positive. The worst part (at least for me) has been the mechanism which delivers more string when needed. The other negative is the "trimmer guard" which you attach when you are assembling it. (Not the big plastic shield that prevents grass from flying everywhere, but the little metal piece that goes right in front of the spinning head.) It's very difficult to get that off after you've assembled it, so I recommend you leave it off completely. In my case I couldn't get it off, so I took some tin snips to it and cut it off. It serves no purpose.
The main problem with the feeder mechanism is that I almost always found myself with about 1-2 inches of string coming out of the head. This was so frustrating I wanted to literally throw the weed eater off a cliff. I was almost to the point where I was never going to use it again. That's when I tried some different string. I went to Lowes and purchased Heavy Duty 2mm (.080") titanium trimmer line. Thank the Lord that solved my problem! This weed eater is now an unstoppable CUTTING MACHINE and I love it. I would give this product 5 stars if it came with this string. But because it gave me so many problems before cutting off the guard and switching the string, it gets a 3.
I recommend this product only if you're going to purchase the new string with it. If you want to use it as is, right out of the box, I would pass. Thanks for reading.

For the small price and power, I didn't have any great expectations. Was I surprized? After years of using a garden weasel to cullivate and weed a medium size garden may back and patiences were dwindling. This product finished that back breaking job in just over a hour. I was actually looking for more places to cultivate. It brought back the fun in gardening. Some areas of my garden were pretty packed, but this guy dug down and loosened everything up in fine fashion. The battery charge lasted about as long a I wanted to work before taking a quick breather. The recharge is quick, getting it back up to full speed in less than 30 minutes. Just make sure you use it with the intended purchase; culivate, aerate, & weed. Beware of large tree roots.
I would say this is a Garden Weasel on steriods.

Black & Decker ST1000 9-Inch 1.8 amp Electric Grass Trimmer Review

Black and Decker ST1000 9-Inch 1.8 amp Electric Grass Trimmer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This small, light weight trimming/edging tool cuts in 9-inch swathes at a time. Because of its size, it is more controllable than the larger (12" - 14") trimmers.
The larger, more powerful trimmers are not suitable for many lawns. I took back one because of its imprecise cutting. The powerful motor resulted in the shredding of a wood edging that separates the lawn from an adjacent mulched area.
One problem with all trimmers is that there is nothing to catch the flying bits of lawn. The only thing that might help in the future is to lay a sheet over the mulched area adjacent to the lawn to catch the cuttings, and move the sheet as I go along. Perhaps this should come with a sheet? Again, the smaller, less powerful machine's precision reduces excess trimmings. This is also a less noisy machine and is easier to store than the more powerful trimmers.
Features include a trimming option so that you can trim lawn under protruding bushes or around rocks, etc. There's also a locking feature for the electric cord. YOu do need to occasionally "bump" the machine (literally lighting hitting it against the lawn) to advance the cutting wire, this takes a little practice to get right. However, the learning curve is fast, after a few outings I thought this was a fairly useful machine.
Update:
I now would not recommend this unless one has previous satisfied experience with it, or something very similar. The main problem is the weight of the cutting assembly at the end of a long "pole." The physics are simply against the user.
Add to that the need to recharge and replace the cutting wire, and, for ME, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits highlighted in the original review.

If you're in the market for a basic, entry-level electric trimmer to handle light trimming work around your house, the Black and Decker 9-inch grass trimmer might be worth considering. While certainly not as powerful or feature-laden as more costly models, this trimmer can handle much of the light-duty work many homeowners need. The trimmer weighs just 3.2 pounds and requires little assembly with just 2 steps. It operates off a reliable, 1.8-amp HP motor, which spins the line at 11,000 rpm. This grass trimmer features a basic bump feed line system, a generous nine-inch cutting path, and a secondary assist handle for added comfort and control. It comes with 20 feet of .065-diameter line, and spool replacement is fairly simple. One thing I found especially handy with this particular trimmer was its unique cord lock system, which holds the extension cord firmly in place while the trimmer is in use. As someone who has accidentally unplugged a trimmer halfway through a job on more than one occasion, this indeed a handy feature to have. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty. --Carl Thress

I decided to buy this trimmer after reading all the reviews for the Ni-cad one. I was hoping the Li-ion battery would give me extra run time. So far, I haven't been able to run it down! I haven't had enough trimming at one time to see how long it will go.
I have a friend that recommended this trimmer (although he has the ni-cad one). I must say that I'm pleased with it. I previously had a 24 volt one from Sears. It was a good trimmer, but heavy. The Worx is much lighter. It doesn't have as much power as the Sears, but plenty for normal yard work. One of the first things I noticed is that it actually cuts better than my old Sears model. If you're expecting a full blown replacement for a grass trimmer, you will probably be disappointed. It doesn't have near that much power. But, if you're realistic in your expectations, and have normal yard work, I think you'll like it. If you go to the Worx web site, you can get your string for just the cost of shipping. I ordered six spools and it cost me about $6.00 for the shipping. That's very reasonable in my book. The quality of the unit appears to be very good too. I am very satisfied with my purchase.

The battery pack will even work with your other WORX Lithium Power Share tools; just swap it out when you're ready to move on to the next job. It's built with ErgoSum Design Technology, so you can operate the WorxGT using a natural grip. The trimmer's front handle has multiple adjustable positions, and the rear grip is angled for maximum comfort. The shaft of the trimmer extends or retracts with a simple twist to match the height of every user and adapt to every application.
The handle also pivots easily to go from trimming to edging in a matter of seconds. The head of the trimmer also pivots 90 degrees to make light work of sloped surfaces and gives you access to grass under low-lying branches. Troy-Bilt LE720R Trimmer Plus 7-1/2-Inch Lawn Edger Attachment Review

Troy-Bilt LE720R Trimmer Plus 7-1/2-Inch Lawn Edger Attachment

My best friend has a dedicated edger. It's large, expensive, takes up space and can't edge any better than this TrimmerPlus accessory.
I've used mine nearly every week of the lawn mowing seasons for the past two years. My edges look great!
I finally replaced the original blade (well worn after 2 years worth of use). The new models (or replacement blades for your old model) now have a large v-shaped notch (scallop) at the edge of the blade. It makes cutting more efficient than the orignal rectangular blade.
After a few months worth of use I finally did discover (as did several others who've reviewed this item) that it really does work best to walk backward. I find that with this technique I can edge my sidewalks, drive, and curbs in one pass.
If you've not edged before and have overgrown edges (I moved into a new home where the edges hadn't been maintained) it will take longer the first time and requires a slower technique. Move the unit back and forth (like a vacuum cleaner) to nibble & carve away the soil & grass to create a new clean edge. After the initial cut to regain control of my edges, it's a snap to run the edger through once weekly or bi-weekly.

The Ryobi add-on lawn edger for TrimmerPlus system does everything a regular edger can do, except take up a lot of room and leave your wallet light. The hungry 7-1/2-inch steel blade cuts an edge up to 2-1/2 inches for clean, deep edges along your driveway, sidewalks, and curbs. The wheel is just large enough to offer perfect stability without sacrificing maneuverability. Like all Trimmer Plus attachments, this edger add-on snaps securely onto any gas-powered Trimmer Plus unit with the Click-Link shaft. And when you're done edging, just remove it from the trimmer shaft, and you're ready for a new task: trimming, pruning, hedge trimming, leaf blowing, cultivating, and when the snow flies, even clearing your driveway. This lawn edger attachment comes with Ryobi's 2-year warranty.

I just purchased a Troy-Bilt 4HP triple blade Edger at Lowes yesterday. The unit edges well. We have a long driveway (500 ft.) with lots of curves, and I believe we can keep grass from growing into the driveway with this unit. On the downside, I've only tried to start it a couple times, with poor success both times. Right out of the box, it took about 15 pulls to start the first time. After running for several minutes, I released the safety bar, which kills the engine (there is no clutch to stop the blade... releasing the bar kills the engine). Then, with the engine already warm from just runing, it took another 10-15 pulls to re-start. The unit has no choke, only a primer bulb which I believe contributes to hard starting. Zapped by "big brother" again!
UPDATE: After using this edger for about 2 months, I believe my rating to be a little to hard. The problem is that the number of pump primes needed to start the machine cold is considerably more than stated in the instructions, at least on my edger. The instructions written on the edger say to pump it 3X. The instructions in the users manual say to pump the primer 6X. By experience, I've learned that if I pump it 12X, it usually starts on the first pull. As long as I know this, it is not really a problem. Our driveway is 450 feet long, so requires 900 feet of edging total (because there are two sides). The edger does a good job. However, it will only dig a maximum of 2 1/4". This is lower than other edgers I've used. Because the edge of our drive is higher than the ground, if I edgw with the wheels on the hard driveway surface per the instructions, I can only dig less than an inch deep. If I want to edge deeper (up to 2 1/4"), I have to have the wheels on the ground. This is contrary to the instructions, but works. Because I'm satisfied with the edger, and have overcome the initial starting problem, I would change my rating to a 4.0 if amazon allowed that.

I used it one time and want to sell it. With only one wheel on the far right side of the blade it tilts towards the blade when you lift the handle to go around a curve in my driveway. it then digs into the concrete or the lawn and tears it up. I purchased this thinking it would be as good as the Trim Rite trimmer I've owned for almost 20 years but it's not.

I have had this edger for about 4 years. Everything was great until the lever that adjusts the edging angle broke. The plastic blade guard also broke so I ordered the parts I needed online. After repairing the machine, the lever broke again in the exact same spot. I took it to a repair shop and they said they make that repair on these machines all the time and there is no guarantee on the work to repair this issue. I asked why and they told me it was due to a poor design. There is a lot of pressure put on that little lever. The engine runs great.
I have not fixed this again, I was thinking of purchasing a new edger, but i haven't found one that I like yet.Update 3/13/2011
I have ended up replacing this friggin lever 3 times now. It just broke again. I never change the angle. I am unbelievably frustrated with this product considering the price tag on this item.

Troy-Bilt TB154 9-Inch 6.5 Amp Electric Garden Cultivator/Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt TB154 9-Inch 6.5 Amp Electric Garden Cultivator/Tiller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this machine last year with the money from my government stimulus check. Technically, it is called a cultivator, not a tiller, so I didn't know what to expect out of it power-wise. I was intent on putting in a decent-sized garden, but the only place in my yard that was getting good sun was also the spot where my lawn grew the thickest. I mowed the lawn and then went to work on it with the cultivator. With the narrow width, it naturally took me a good bit of time to till up approximately 16' x 32' plot of thick lawn, but I took my time and this machine did it in a day. I gave it a second tilling at a cross angle. I did have some grass come back in the garden, but this year I don't expect any of it to still be there.
With the success I had on the garden spot, I went ahead and dug up huge stretches of my yard and built planters. These spots equaled the size of the garden spot. Then, in about three stages, I gradually tilled up my entire back yard (where grass would no longer grow due to shade) and planted it all in clover. This year I added more garden space by tilling up another chunk of lawn approximately 8' x 32'. I have tilled it twice, but will hit it one more time to make sure I've gotten all the grass killed this year. I've also-re-tilled last years garden area which I had over-wintered in clover.
One thing that had concerned me was the instructions to remove the tines after each use and clean them. This turned out to be an extremely easy task, as they are held in place with ring pins and slide right off the axle. The tines are extremely tough on this machine. I've jammed large rocks in them and also bounced it off the edge of my concrete driveway. It just keeps chugging away with a minimum of care. Troy-Bilt makes a more expensive gas model, but I looked at them in the store and the tines appear to be exactly the same. This model is quiet and you never have to mess with oil and gas. Get a heavy-duty extension cord (or two)--the heavier the gauge the better to get full power to the machine.
