(More customer reviews)After having Illy at the espresso bars in Italy, well, no other espresso tasted good to me! Illy tastes great made in a good pump espresso machine. It also tastes great made in a steam espresso machine (e.g., a low end Krups) and a Moka (an Italian poor-man's espresso maker). The rich flavor isn't burnt tasting like many espresso roasts. Everyone I've made an Illy espresso for raves over the flavor compard to espresso from chain coffee stores.
I used to buy Illy at the local stores, but the prices were over $11 per can, sometimes $12. I was happy to see Amazon start carrying it at an even lower price.
If you can't find Illy a good runner-up is Lavazza, however, its flavor isn't as intense as Illy.

After brewing your espresso, just shake the pod out of the holder, and you're ready to brew another. Use two at once for a double shot.
The quality of the espresso from the pods is as good as ground coffee. But you trade off convenience for price. Buy these if you just make an occasional cup of espresso, if you are always on the run, or like to make several espresso shots in succession, for example, when you entertain.

Firstly, it uses ILLY ESE pods available as Dark, Medium and Decaf. I usually go for dark but keep a few boxed of medium for guests. The espresso is beatiful with a lovely crema every time - just impossible to make a bad espresso.
Very easy to keep clean as the grinds are in a filtered pod.
Secondly, it looks awesome without being overbearingly garish or over-designed.
So happy - I bought a second one just in case!

The tin packaging is compact for easy storage, but I recommend keeping the opened pods in a vacuum container to maintain freshness. If you're willing to invest in two 18-pod tins, you can't beat the price on Amazon!
For a slightly different great taste and individual packaging to maintain freshness, try Espressione as an alternative, though the individual packaging requires additional storage space in your cupboard.

This machine is for people who want convenience. This machine uses pre-packaged espresso servings. If you do not want to fuss or mess that comes with grinding your own beans, you have three options:
1. Nespresso. You have to buy the machine and the capsules from Nespresso. I tried this machine and didn't really like the espresso. Not enough rich crema.
2. E.S.E Pods. Made by lots of different companies. This is an industry standard format. It's basically like an individually packaged tea bag, with a compressed puck of finely ground coffee inside. You could use this in a convensional espresso machine with the appropriate adaptor. Widely available. But the quality of your espresso will depend highly on your machine.
3. Illy's iperEspresso capsules, used by this machine, the Francis Francis X8. Not much of a selection of coffee, but what they do offer is very good. The crema is excellent. I find the machine very easy to use. The multi-color LED tells me when the machine is ready. Switches quickly between brew and steam (< 30 seconds). The frothing wand works pretty well, but it tends to over froth a bit. That's great for cappuccinos, but not so great for lattes.
PROS:
1. Extremely easy and convenient.
2. It acually makes decent drinks.
3. Seems to be good quality construction.
4. Never really runs out of steam. The pump inject small amounts of water into the boiler while steaming.
5. Switches between steam and brew (and vice versa) in under 30 seconds.
6. Heats up very quickly (under 30 seconds).CONS:
1. This is not for espresso connoisseurs. The espresso is acceptable, but not in the same league as a Rancillio or Gaggia. My other machine is a Silvia. I bought the X8 because I wanted a second machine for the office, where grinding beans and making a mess is not an option.
2. The Illy capsules are not individually wrapped. Once you open the tin (14 capsules), the shelf life is 14 days.
3. The construction quality is excellent, keeping in mind the whole thing is plastic. Again, not in the same league as something 100% stainless steel or polished chrome.
4. The steam power is very weak, however due the sophisticated design of the steam wand, it does a good job creating froth because it mixes lots of air into the milk. Nonetheless, you don't really have the power or flexibility that you'd find on a high-end machine.
5. It's mainly designed for single shot drinks. A tripple shot "venti" cappuccino will be rather tough to make with this machine (and expensive). Steaming a large enough portion of milk will be a slow process. Also, it would take you nearly two minutes to brew three capsules. By then, both your crema from the first shot and froth in the sitting milk would have started to collapse and your end result will not be great.
Overall, I love this machine.

While the individual capsules aren't cheap (about .70 cents each), the machine is well priced at $400. We go through at least 3 cans a month. Each and every cup is perfect!!! (More customer reviews)With the pods & the Lavazza machine you get a shot of espresso with the push of the button. The pods make it super easy (though they're probably not eco friendly). I have a double espresso every morning and have found the crema to consistently produce the most flavorful and creamy espresso shots. While the crema is strong espresso, it does not produce the jolt that some coffee house espressos do. On the other hand, it is smoother, less harsh and very "drinkable". The coffee houses have not been getting my money in the morning for quite a while now.

(More customer reviews)I've been a faithful FrancisFrancis user for years. I loved my X1, but it needed repairs. Since Francis Francis has been taken over by Illy, their customer service has become nonexistent, so I haven't been able to get the parts I need to fix it.
I was excited by the new iperespresso capsules, so I decided to go with the X7. The espresso is as good as advertised. But my wife and I each make a latte every morning. This machine, however, is very reluctant to switch modes between brewing and steaming. It's not uncommon to wait five minutes between pulling the shot and the machine deciding it's ready to steam the milk. This doesn't sound terrible, but the espresso is sitting out all this time, and I'm getting late for work.
The machine produces good results, especially the espresso. It's just frustrating to deal with the waiting. I've tried to contact the company to see if there was any sort of work around for this problem, but as stated above, FrancisFrancis's once wonderful customer service has dropped off the face of the Earth now that Illy runs things.
