(More customer reviews)I purchased a single-serving coffee maker awhile ago and found myself burnt out on the available pod flavors. So I got this pod maker and I very much enjoyed being able to make my own pods. However, this product doesn't last very long. I have since read several reviews from other sites with the same problem. My pod maker worked great for about 9 months. After that the heating element would no longer heat. I called the number in the manual several times and got an answering machine every time. I left messages but never did get a response. I refuse to spend another 40 dollars for a product that doesn't even last a year. However, I did find a way to continue making pods. I took the product apart and removed the heating element and all the electronics. The plastic base is the only part you need to keep. I use a small travel size iron to heat the pods which seals them just as well if not better than the original heating element. You will want to use an iron without water to avoid get the pod wet while sealing it.
Note: This product will fail, but with a little adjustment you can still use it to make your favorite coffee pods.

(More customer reviews)Having tried eco-pads and the Presto, this is the best yet!
Too much water bypasses the coffee with the eco-pads, and they are a PITA to clean by comparison. The water flow is too fast with the Presto, not having the restrictor orifice to slow things down and allow enough contact time with the coffee. Plus you have to buy or make your own filter papers to boot! It's correct contact time, water temperature and passing the brewed coffee at pressure through an orifice that gives you the good crema, somewhat similar a true espresso maker.
Clean up is quick, if only somewhat more messy than pods, but way more economical in the long run than buying pods or pod filter papers to fill yourself.
The espresso grind French Roast from Peet's works perfect with the 'Duck, giving you a brew that looks like Guinness on tap while filling your cup and ending with a fine bubble crema. It's robust without being bitter. You'll end up with slightly less brew because the flow rate through 'Duck is lower. The best cup of coffee I've ever had out the Senseo.
Start with a standard measure of coffee, make sure the grind is "fluffed" up and not compressed in any way when you measure. Do not tamp or pack the grind in any way or overfill the 'Duck or you WILL end up with a mess! Don't ask me how I know. :^)
Your Senseo should not sound erratic or leak while brewing, if it does you either have too much, too fine of grind or have packed the grind in the 'Duck.

Update 6/8/2010. The Duck finally gave up the ghost after LOTS of cups of coffee. The failures were the top screen deforming (first problem), most likely from the brew temp plus the pressure from the spring tab that holds it down in the Senseo , then the o-ring that sits under the bottom screen deteriorated (fatal!). This allows coffee grinds to slip past the screen and plug the orifice. I noted that the plastic frame of the bottom screen had deformed also. These are plastic/rubber bits that are exposed to acidic liquid (coffee) and high temps. My water also has low pH, so that didn't help either. This first Duck outlasted the Senseo though.:-)
Ordered my replacement Duck tonight!

(More customer reviews)I bought these pods because they were rated the highest quality to use with the Senseo. The pods do work great,with the 2 pod holder. You need to finely grind the coffee. I did find the lid hard to close. I bought another brand that cost less to compare. The lesser expensive ones worked just as well and were easier to close. If you want good pod coffee with the foam,these work well,and you won't loose the lid.

Senseo HD7001 Espresso Pod Holder for Gourmet Coffee Machines Review

(More customer reviews)Ever since I received the Senseo coffee maker I have been in search of it's ability to actually make good coffee. I like a good cup of coffee and espresso, I do roast my own green coffee beans to achieve this, but by no means am I a 'coffee snob'. I have an expensive espresso maker but by the time you grind the beans, heat up the unit, tamp in the grind, make the cup and clean up the thing...WOW! I like the Senseo for a single cup when the time necessitates this. To be honest, I went outside of the 'Senseo Brand' to find a decent tasting cup...I found the Senseo brands of coffee thin and lacking in taste. One reason is the blends, but the most significant issue is freshness....other brands individually package the pods and insure this biggest reason for good coffee. Now to the espresso part. I saw the Senseo espresso pods when they were only available in Europe (ordered them on eBay) and they needed the Senseo Espresso Pod Holder to maintain the correct pressure (different nozzle on the bottom of the holder) for the drip. This holder is set up for a single size pod and there in lies the issue...with the Senseo pods (not individually wrapped) it produced a thin, stale espresso. The look (crema) and smell were spot on, just not the taste...so I looked outside the Senseo brand AGAIN. I found that most companies that made espresso pods to fit the Senseo made them with more coffee in the pod (double size) and they didn't fit in this new holder. If used it would leak because it doesn't seal completely, the pod is too thick...they use the standard double size holder included with the Senseo coffee maker. I found that Timothy's Rainforest Espresso Blend espresso pods (9-10 grams each) to work great for me and make good espresso coffee in the Senseo. The reason they work with the existing holders is that they are packaged with the right amount of grind and tamped to the correct density within the pod. They are flavorful and robust...you can make a 'shot' when used in the single cup mode or to make espresso style coffee in the double cup mode. I'm still playing around with them, but either way they are much better than the Senseo pods...which to me, render the need for the Espresso Pod Holder useless.
So let's recap: save your money and stick with the holder you got with the unit and just buy a better espresso pod that contains more espresso grind in it, 9-10 gram pods versus the standard 4-5 gram pods, and is DESIGNED to work with what we already have.
But once again, Amazon shipped the holder for free, got it quickly, and was packaged well...second to none in this E-Commerce world.
