Vietnamese coffee filter set Review

(More customer reviews)Ever since I came back from Vietnam, I have been using these small "French presses", or Vietnamese coffee filter sets. I bought 3 sets for one dollar (15,000 dong) in Vietnam, and soon realized that I needed more. So, I bought a few in the U.S. (local VN grocery store) and noticed that they come in different forms. This one has the screw in press, which I don't like as much as the simple press down piece that just sits on top of the ground coffee. It works great. The screw in needs to be tighten until you hit the coffee, but don't tighten too much (low drip, or no drip) and too little (too fast), but just right. I can't figure it out.
It is much more difficult to remove the screw part after the coffee is done. Worse, sometimes it can be that it is screwed in too hard, so the water does not drain through, but now you can't loosen it, because the hot water covers the piece. That's why the simpler version works much better. I have never seen this construction in Vietnam either.
However, there is one advantage, it is that it is sturdier and lasts longer.

Preparing delicious Vietnamese coffee is quick, easy and doesn't require much clean-up afterward. The coffee filter is stainless steel and there are three parts (filter, screw-on damper, and lid). Simply place the filter on top of a cup, so it looks like a hat. Add 2-3 teaspoons of coffee to the filter, then screw on the damper so it's snug (not tight). Shake the filter a bit to settle the coffee. Fill up the cup about 1/3 with hot water then wait 20 seconds. Unscrew the damper 2 turns and fill the cup entirely with hot water. Place the lid on and wait a few minutes until the water has dripped though. Add a spoonful (or more) of sweetened condensed milk to the cup before or after you start the process. The final result is fabulous. Printed instructions come with the filter. The filter set is made in Taiwan of stainless steel, and quality is excellent--it will last for years. (More customer reviews)I've made some of the best coffee ever with this, melita #2 filters, and fresh ground (medium grind) coffee. Hot-not-boiling water, pour slowly and stir the grounds periodically.
Two things I wish this had:
* a wider base to fit over my favorite coffee mug
* bigger slits for "see through" - unless the mug is light-colored, it's not really a useful feature, because it's too dark inside the cup.

(More customer reviews)I am very pleased with this product. I have been eyeing it for awhile, mostly as an alternative to the drip we use daily for reasons of getting away from plastic. I am glad I waited because the new design with the handle is wonderful--the coffee pours easily and gracefully.
Some things to be ready for, though--it does take about three to four rounds of pouring the boiling water over the coffee grounds while waiting for it to drip, and the glass container cools fairly quickly. I was also concerned that the extra steps of boiling the water and pouring it through would be too much in the morning as opposed to filling up the drip machine and hitting the switch, but I find that I actually like the ritual of preparing coffee with the Chemex (and I am not a morning person). Also, I found that pre-heating the Chemex with hot tap water for a few minutes while waiting for the coffee water to boil makes a lot of difference, and then once the coffee is brewed, I pour it all into a stainless steel carafe or thermos to keep it hot. The coffee is so good that any leftover at the end of the day, either re-heated or iced, is delicious. The six-cup is perfect for one to two enthusiastic coffee drinkers. I highly recommend!

It works as well as the old one, but it overflows easily when using more than 6 tablespoons of coffee or 6 cups. It is a well made filter and works great with only using it for 6 cups. This might not be an issue with slower coffeemakers, however. I wish it were a little taller.

CHEMEX 10 Cup Classic Series Coffee Maker Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using a Chemex 10-cup coffee maker for over a year and half, and have never had such good coffee before in my life. I am constantly looking forward to my next pot of coffee!
There is a downside to this coffee maker: it is a more manual procedure than what you are used to, and it also takes a couple of pots to learn how to use this most efficiently. The first time I tried to use mine, I had ground my coffee way too finely and it just took forever! The big time consumers: you have to boil your water separately (you do have a water kettle right?) and then you have to gradually pour the boiled water through the Chemex. This means that while the coffee is brewing, you are pouring, or watching, or giving the filter area a bit of a stir.
Now the up side: you will never ever ever drink a better cup of coffee. I use filtered water, freshly ground home roasted beans, and this Chemex to produce the finest coffee I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. And this coffee is a pleasure! In fact, I've totally given up using cream and sugar because my coffee no longer has anything to hide.
Another up side: clean up means swishing the Chemex with warm water and tossing the water down the drain. You can also wash with a bottle brush but this is rarely necessary. A brief swish is really all it takes. Over time, it does start to acquire a smokey color, at which point I wash it in water mixed with a splash of bleach to get your Chemex looking factory new. Try that with your electric drip machine! Ha! That thing will NEVER look brand new!
Oh, here's a final upside: despite the fact that this Chemex brews the best coffee you'll ever drink, it costs less than just about anything. You are probably already spending more money than this every month at Starbucks!
The Chemex is just a type of glass carafe, so there are no heating elements to burn your coffee. Some people may not like this, but without the heated burner there is no risk of burning your coffee. I usually make enough coffee to fill the 10-cup Chemex. When ready, I just pour it into my thermos and a large mug and I have enough coffee for the whole day. And that includes enough to share; everyone at work knows the best coffee comes out of my thermos. The Flavia machines do not come close!
Go ahead and buy yourself one of these. If necessary, wake up 10 minutes earlier to make your coffee. Better yet, wake up 20 minutes earlier. And when your coffee is ready, instead of dumping it into a travel cup and bolting out the door, sit down and enjoy your first cup for the next 10 minutes. You deserve it!

(More customer reviews)Several reviews have claimed that these filters are a total waste, blah blah blah. If they feel their water doesn't need filtration, then I should think they should simply not use a filter and not complain.
Some of us, on the other hand, live in areas where the tap water tastes downright vile--this is certainly the case where I live. I used to buy bottled water for the sole purpose of making coffee. These filters, though, have saved me time and money--yes, they really work! Since I bought the Mr Coffee coffee maker last year, I can use tap water and have coffee without the unpleasant taste of chlorine. This was certainly not the case before.
As to the price, I've paid just as much for two filters (as opposed to six) in stores, and what Amazon charges is much more reasonable than any other price I've seen for this item on line.

Swissgold KF 300 One-Cup Coffee Filter Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent solution if you like a small-ish (8-10 oz or less) and convenient cup of coffee in the morning. My experience is that no automatic drip maker is really designed to make a good single cup, and while I use a french press on the weekends, cleaning the screen assembly is too much hassle for a weekday morning, as is having to mind the infusion time. So the swissgold one-cup is an excellent compromise. There's no brew time to pay attention to, it's very easy to rinse everything clean under the tap, and you don't have to buy or throw away paper filters!
My only complaint (hence the 4 stars rather than 5) is that the infusion time seems very short -- the cup is usually done brewing in about a minute or less -- and the coffee does lack body as a result. I wonder if the filter might have been designed to slow down brewing a bit more. In any case, I just use a fairly fine grind, like one of the other reviewers here said, and end up with very decent coffee with a minimum of hassle.

Typically gold filters allow the oils and other properties of the ground bean to pass though, instead of being stuck in the paper filter. This gives a darker richer coffee. It also means you have a small "shot" of more dense coffee at the end of your cup. You can either drink it or not, some people really like the taste of the gold filter, others are used to the paper and don't like it at all. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

The rounded, white Chemex filters work fine, but these are the better choice. They also give you something to hold onto as you plop the dregs into the garbage or your compost bin.
I'm a home roaster, too. The Chemex with these filters will bring all the beauty and/or ugliness of your beans and the roast straight into your nose and mouth.
Do it right or go to your local coffee shop, 'cause you're an addict who can't make good coffee, so you should have someone else make it for you.

I was skeptical that I would have plasticy or metallic tasting coffee with a metal basket, but my coffee has never had such a warm woody taste since I started using the basket. cleaning is a little hard since I have to spray all the coffee out of it with the faucet hose, but it is worth the landfull space for me to spray a little bit. also keeps from filling my valuable cabinet space with a huge box of filters, and not to mention the hassle of separating them every time I want a fresh pot!
this filter is magnificent, and much better than the cheaper ones which my friends have gotten and had metallic tasting coffee.

(More customer reviews)Having tried eco-pads and the Presto, this is the best yet!
Too much water bypasses the coffee with the eco-pads, and they are a PITA to clean by comparison. The water flow is too fast with the Presto, not having the restrictor orifice to slow things down and allow enough contact time with the coffee. Plus you have to buy or make your own filter papers to boot! It's correct contact time, water temperature and passing the brewed coffee at pressure through an orifice that gives you the good crema, somewhat similar a true espresso maker.
Clean up is quick, if only somewhat more messy than pods, but way more economical in the long run than buying pods or pod filter papers to fill yourself.
The espresso grind French Roast from Peet's works perfect with the 'Duck, giving you a brew that looks like Guinness on tap while filling your cup and ending with a fine bubble crema. It's robust without being bitter. You'll end up with slightly less brew because the flow rate through 'Duck is lower. The best cup of coffee I've ever had out the Senseo.
Start with a standard measure of coffee, make sure the grind is "fluffed" up and not compressed in any way when you measure. Do not tamp or pack the grind in any way or overfill the 'Duck or you WILL end up with a mess! Don't ask me how I know. :^)
Your Senseo should not sound erratic or leak while brewing, if it does you either have too much, too fine of grind or have packed the grind in the 'Duck.

Update 6/8/2010. The Duck finally gave up the ghost after LOTS of cups of coffee. The failures were the top screen deforming (first problem), most likely from the brew temp plus the pressure from the spring tab that holds it down in the Senseo , then the o-ring that sits under the bottom screen deteriorated (fatal!). This allows coffee grinds to slip past the screen and plug the orifice. I noted that the plastic frame of the bottom screen had deformed also. These are plastic/rubber bits that are exposed to acidic liquid (coffee) and high temps. My water also has low pH, so that didn't help either. This first Duck outlasted the Senseo though.:-)

Swissgold Gold Foil Filter 12-c. Review

(More customer reviews)I own two of these, for a Melitta Clarity and Presto Scandinavian Design coffee makers. The difference in taste between these and paper filters is unimaginable. It's not the same as French pressed coffee: not as thick mouthfeel, brighter. The SwissGold filter is fine enough that there is very little sediment, a problem cheaper (Krups) knock-offs suffer badly from.
The filter has an indented rim to let you pick it up, rather than a handle. This lets it fit into more machines, at the cost of making it less convenient to remove while hot from machines that don't have a detachable filter holder (both of mine do, so it's kind of moot for me).
One thing the write-up doesn't mention is that there is an extension ring hiding in the box under the little cardboard bit the filters sits in. I have never needed it, but I imagine there are coffee machines where it would help.

(More customer reviews)We use our filter basket 99% of the time rather than buy the costly single use "pods". We got these as a replacement when our original basket broke. They work well. No leakage and no extra grounds in our coffee. The only thing you need to know is that the basket is a little deeper than a true Keurig basket, so it holds more coffee grounds. But it still fits and works in the old filter cartridge holder. This actually may be of benefit if you have a Keurig that brews larger cups of coffee (like the 12oz) or just like strong coffee. I don't fill these baskets to the top since I don't like really strong coffee.
