(More customer reviews)I found myself needing a small coffee maker when my old 4-cup Braun needed to be replaced (the carafe broke and Braun wanted as much for a replacement carafe as the cost of this Krups model). Not wanting another fragile Braun carafe (which didn't pour well anyway), I looked at the reviews on [Amazon.com] and settled on the Krups. It's wonderful !!! takes up very little counter space, makes a terrific cup of coffee, shuts off temporarily without any drips when removing the carafe mid course in brewing, carafe pours well, and it looks sharp !... I highly recommend this to anyone looking at 4-cup coffee makers. By the way, mine came with a removable nylon basket for the coffee grounds.

It is practically impossible to pour the coffee into your cup without getting almost as much on the kitchen counter! I think it is the extra wide spout and the reason they give you 5 cups instead of 4 in the pot. This spillage also happens when pouring the water into the reservoir. Also, it you remove the carafe during brewing, it is not drip free. It will dribble and splash against the coffee maker. The coffee making is fairly quick and quiet. I prefer my old coffee maker that had a slide out basket and a pot that was easier to deal with.

Continental Electric CE23589 4 Cup Coffee Maker-black Review

(More customer reviews)This is basically the same brewer as the Elite Quisine 4 cup brewer which you can buy here at Amazon. The same manufacturer must make both for different companies. One says "Elite" and the other says "Continental" but they are clones. Both are so inexpensive I got one of each, in case I need a spare. As inexpensive as they are, I don't know how long they will last. This one seems to have a slightly lower brewing temperature than the Elite Quisine and the caraf doesn't have calibrations for the amount of coffee that the Elite has. This one is also a lot cheaper. I paid only $12.00 and now it is down to $9 and change. The Elite is 19.95.
My only real criticism of this one is that the brewing temperature could be hotter, as the other brewer is. I measured the temperature in the pot on this at 179 degrees Farenheit but that is after the water soaks through the beans and drips through the air about 6 inches. The Elite temps out at 185 in the pot. It tastes hotter too.
If you buy this one, or the other for that matter, I would recommend one of those double walled Bodum mugs you can get at Starbucks (don't have those shipped or they will arrive broken half of the time.) This will keep your coffee warmer longer but I wouldn't take to long to drink it lest it not be hot enough for you.

I also have hard water, but we use distilled/purified or spring bottled water in the maker - so their is not the build up of lime in the structure. Easy to clean with vinegar. Simple model, we keep it unplugged after it's done to prevent it from overheating (if in case it ever did) - then it lasts a bit longer. Of course we find the 12 cup only equates to about 4 of our mug sizes - but then, it's good for it's size.

The price was so good at walmart on this one, I had to try it - and I'd been looking for a cute little 4 cup, so I could have caffinated in one pot and decaf in another.
Had tried Mr coffee in the past and not liked it. Got it home an made my 1st 4 cups. It brewed a perfect pot, without leaks. The caraffe poured with no spills on the counter.
Cheap, small, cute, lightweight and brews a good pot. I am pleased

-I burr grind gourmet beans, filtered water..., and want a GREAT cup of coffee!?
I first tried the Black & Decker DCM500B 5-cup coffeemaker, & was VERY UNHAPPY!- bland flavorless, SLOW, MESSY basket paper filter (removing it is a mess!)..., coffeemaker!-
There is a reason the B&D's sooo slow/tasteless!- It's the large-diameter "basket" type filter!
Even with a shower head (sprays only about the size of a .50 cent piece)- the grounds on the sides "slowly" get wet, & are hardly strained for flavor (shut it off after brewing two-cups/look- you'll see 75% dry grounds!)!
-Most ALL Top-Rated gourmet coffeemakers, use the smaller-diameter CONE "paper" filters (more water contact...!).
-! Paper filters also remove heart-UNhealthy chemicals!-
"Use no-hole unbleached (Oxygen bleached is ok) paper filters when brewing your coffee. Kahweol and Cafestol, two substances in brewed coffee, can increase cholesterol levels! Paper filters trap both of these. Skip the espresso and other unfiltered coffees!"!

I Googled (many days/hours, and tried several brands) for a GREAT 4/5 cup coffeemaker, that uses "CONE" filters?-
I finally found the EXCELLENT Toastmaster TCM4B!
Toastmaster TCM4B 4-Cup Automatic Drip Coffeemaker, Black
TCM4B Pros-
- #2 CONE filter that makes a GREAT cup of flavorful coffee (pre-wet basket, handle down, press/fold smaller sides flat...)!
- Shower head!
- Brews 4-cups (2 USA mugs) of HOT coffee, in about 6min (optimal grounds contact time!)!
- No-drip carafe ( If you thumb-up the lid, & pour medium speed)!
- Pause & pour (20 seconds max!- hold basket in with thumb, & lift up back of carafe...).-
- 1 ¼ tbs. grounds per cup, for medium strength coffee.
- Longevity!- I read another user review where they had "happily" used it 4-times a day, for 2-years!
- I had good results with the Kroger natural brown/un-bleached paper filters!
- Be sure & wash ALL parts in HOT soapy water to remove oil release film. I also put 1/2 cup of white vinegar in first break-in pot, along with an empty filter.
IMPORTANT CLEANING/USE TIP (all brands!)!- The TCM4 had REALLY different cleaning instructions (not just this!)!- Big note to let it cool 10min between pots!!! Every coffeemaker I've had go bad on me, was shortly after I had poured cold water into a still hot pot (sizzle...)!
Cons-
- "FULLY" Insert caraffe, "AFTER" you close basket!- or leaks all over!
- This is not Heavy Duty, and probably un-suitable for a big office... I would never put any of the parts in a dishwasher! It should last long with lots of TLC!?
- On-Light is on the side.
- Does not come with any #2 cone paper filters- Shop ahead (I trimed 1" off a #4).

I had to return this product THREE times because it does NOT (as it says in the description) come with the perfect pour carafe which is what I wanted since the standard carafe drips EVERYWHERE. On the third time of returning it, I asked why they kept sending me the wrong carafe and they said that the perfect pour was discontinued in this size. I then mentioned to Amazon that they might want to remove that part of the description, but they have not.

I too was concerned that it is not a thermal insulated carafe but it turns out that is not needed since it sits on a "Keep Hot" warming plate. Though it is not listed on the outside of the box, it does indeed automatically shut off after 2 hours as described in the instructions. The clock and programmable timer are simple to set up. Best of all it brews hot delicious coffee!

Not only is the filter basket removable, washable, and operates as a paper-less filter system, but the part that encases the filter, is both removable and washable. Whoever made this coffee maker is brilliant. Though, like most brilliant people, they assumed that everyone thinks the way they do. A drawback to this product is that you cannot open or close the filter basket when the coffee pot is in place on the element. You just have to remember the pot is the last to go into place and the first to come off. This unit makes great coffee. The parts go in the dishwasher. It looks great on the kitchen counter... the design is exceptional. I am delighted with my purchase.

Hamilton Beach 4 Cup Coffee Brewer Review

(More customer reviews)My old 4-cup Mr. Coffee was a decent little coffeemaker and it lasted for about three years before it started to give me trouble. Technically it still works but the coffee it brews is only warm, not hot. So I decided it was time for a new machine.
I did a lot of research, and the fact of the matter is that there just aren't many good quality 4-cup coffeemakers on the market. I researched the models from Mr. Coffee, Cuisinart, and Black & Decker, and none of them got particularly good reviews. I went to local stores and played with the display models and all of them felt very light, flimsy, and cheap. Even the $40 Cuisinart was featherweight and felt like it would fall apart at any moment.
I've always had good luck with Hamilton Beach products, so when I found this one online, I had a good feeling about it. I did some more research and found that this particular model is used in hotels all over the country. That seemed like a good sign. Commercial grade products are usually built to a higher standard than consumer grade stuff.
So I ordered it, and sure enough, it's a major step above the 4-cup machines made by the other manufacturers. Even though it's made mostly of plastic, it is heavy and stable and definitely won't tip over easily. The power cord is heavy grade and has a 3-prong plug. The on/off switch has a nice spring action and seems durable.
Due to the fact that these are made for hotel rooms, there are picture-based instructions in white ink on top of the coffeemaker. If you are very concerned about appearances, this might bother you. It doesn't bother me. The #1 thing I'm concerned about is how the coffee tastes... and with that in mind...
It tastes great! It's very hot, much hotter than my old Mr. Coffee. But the water isn't TOO hot, so you don't need to worry about it making the coffee bitter and over-extracted.
I only have two complaints, and they are relatively minor: when you're finished brewing coffee and you open the basket holder to remove the grounds and filter, a small amount of water falls out and splashes onto the warming plate and onto the counter. It's not a huge amount of water -- maybe a teaspoon -- but it does do this every time I brew coffee. Just something to be aware of; have a paper towel handy and it's not a problem. My other complaint is that there is no way of knowing how much water is in the reservoir. Usually they have a little window or some other indicator, but this unit doesn't have either. Mildly annoying, but not a huge issue and obviously doesn't affect the coffee itself.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this coffeemaker and would recommend it to anyone who is searching for a good quality 4-cup machine.

It replaces a permanent filter from Mr Coffee that had a plastic bottom with the mesh only on the sides.
The Medelco filter has mesh on the bottom as well as the sides, thus the water runs through the filter too fast resulting in weak coffee.
The only suggestion from Medelco's help line was to use more coffee!

I also don't like the waste of single-use filters. So, I was pleased to find this permanent filter. I've been using it for several months now, and my coffee always comes out just fine. The filter is easy to clean and, other than washing it after each use, there is no maintenance involved. Using this filter over time, you'll make up the cost of buying disposable ones, and you'll have that much less to toss in the garbage each time you brew a cuppa joe.
