German Oktoberfest Home Beer Brewing Ingredient Kit Review

German Oktoberfest Home Beer Brewing Ingredient Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Normally we don't brew from a kit. Out of laziness (no brewing stores where we live) and because of the low price we decided to give it a try. Normally we spend twice the amount assembling all the ingredients. The kit comes with very clear instructions. Furthermore, all the ingredients are individually labeled with instructions on when to add. This makes the brewing process almost fool proof, this also helps out if there is drinking involved. After eight days of primary fermentation, we added a seven day secondary fermentation step which is not in the instructions or required. We like to add the secondary fermentation step because it increases the clarity of the beer and allows us to bottle or keg when we are ready. Ten days after bottling, the beer tasted great. It is recommended waiting two weeks, but we couldn't resist. The beer had good carbonation, nice clarity, a very mild malty taste with just a taste of hops. You should be aware that this kit does not include bottle caps. Overall I would give this kit an A.

Oktoberfest is Germanys festival beer. We use a blend of Light, Amber, and wheat dry malt extracts to produce a bright copper color lager with a creamy white head. This beer is nicely balanced with a traditional blend of Hallertauer, Hersbrucker, and Tettnanger hops. This is one of our personal favorites for introducing new people to fine homebrew. You will find that all great beers have two things in common:  the finest ingredients and the best recipes.  Ours have both!  With freshness and quality in mind, we produce all our kits on demand.  We want you to make good beer the first time and every time. Our beer making kits come with complete instructions that are easy to read and follow.  They contain all the ingredients you will need to produce five gallons of great homebrew that you will be able to serve with pride.  All our beer kits include dry malt extract, specialty grains with a grain bag for steeping, hops, yeast, clarifier, and priming sugar (for carbonating). These beer brewing kits are so easy to make that even a first-time brewer can make great beer with one of these kits, but the quality and convenience keep even experienced home brewers coming back for more. Krups C75 BeerTender Home Beer-Tap System with Heineken DraughtKeg Technology Review

Krups C75 BeerTender Home Beer-Tap System with Heineken DraughtKeg Technology
Average Reviews:

I recently bought the C75 Beertender as we prepare for the fall football season and we love it- here's why.
*Heineken is the beer of choice in our house, so when we saw the mini draught kegs in the grocery store, we knew this would be a nice alternative to the bottles and cans we normally buy for our gatherings.
*I am a big a fan of Krups products; I've always used a Krups coffee maker; I can't live without the pannini grill and recently purchased the fully automatic espresso machine- which we love. When I saw the Beertender, I knew we had to have one in our house.
*We have beer on tap all the time! Does it get any better then that? The beer stays at the perfect temperature, it doesn't take up any room in our refrigerator and it tells us when the keg needs to be replaced, if we exceed the 30 day freshness period. (So far we have drained the kegs before that date happens but we have come close)
I'm thinking this will be a great present for all the beer lovers in our families.

Sleek looking and deceptively easy to operate, this innovative countertop beer-draughting system offers an impressive way to serve up perfectly chilled, pub-style beer from the comfort of home. The unit works with either a 5-liter Heineken DraughtKeg or a 5-liter Heineken Premium Light DraughtKeg (both sold separately), and it uses Heineken DraughtKeg patented carbonator pressure technology to create the perfect glass with that well-loved head of foam every time. To insert the keg, simply snap on a disposable DraughtKeg tube, place the Heineken DraughtKeg into the machine, position the keg's plastic tube into the spout, and close the lid. When it's time to serve, simply hold a glass underneath the spout and pull the handle forward, tilting the glass at a 45-degree angle and adjusting upright as the glass fills. Then relax after work with the cold beverage or raise a toast with friends to mark the occasion. The unit's patented silent cooling system keeps the beer chilled at an ideal serving temperature of 38 degrees F, plus it automatically pressurizes the keg and releases Co2 each time the tap opens, ensuring crisp, fresh beer for up to 30 days--perfect for serving up the crowd-pleasing brew from one party to the next. Other highlights include an LED display with temperature and volume indicators, a removable drip tray, and easy-to-clean detachable parts. Ten disposable DraughtKeg tubes come included. Ideal for poker nights, football parties with friends, and other fun events, the home beer-tap system measures 19-1/2 by 18 by 12 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

Haier HBF05EBSS Draft Beer Dispenser Review

Haier HBF05EBSS Draft Beer Dispenser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was 'ignaugurated' at a party I hosted, and the 5 gal keg didn't last long! (Of course, it was a good beer...locally brewed Pacific Coast Emerald Ale.)
Be prepared: After it's set up and you've had people over, you're going to be QUITE popular! Expect comments like "I'm going to be over at your place every afternoon." Haier America should realize their best marketing ploy is satisfied customers. I've had it two weeks and Haier may be selling 3 additional units soon.
OK, so what about the product rating, especially in light of all the negative comments provided earlier? Well, here's my take on it:
- Set up was fairly simple, if you discount the fact that one part was missing (see below).
- Quality seems to be adequate. They use quality parts, e.g., the CO2 regulator and dispensing valve.
- It's keeping my second (post party) keg perfectly chilled and pressurized. (Since the first keg only lasted several hours, we can't base much judgement on that.)
- It's wonderful to come home to a fresh, draft beer!
- Finding a place to refill the CO2 canister can be difficult. Most commercial places will only exchange (take your brand new canister and give you a used, filled canister). I finally found a fire extinguisher service that does refills after making MANY calls.
Does this make it perfect? Hardly.
My experience confirms that Haier America has poor customer service. I purcased the unit a week in advance of a party I was hosting. After getting it home and setting it up, I realized (according to the manual) that it was missing the washer that goes between the CO2 tank and the regulator. I called Haier customer service the following morning and was shocked by how they treated me. The basic tone of their response was "tough luck." I would have to follow their procedures which were: 1) fax or send via US mail my purchase receipt 2) Allow them two business days from their receipt of this to get back to me 3) After doing a 'confirmation' they would send me the washer within two weeks.
I was irate and told them so! I had purchased the unit specifically for my upcoming party and now would not be able to use it! Their reponse: "These are our procedures."
I did two things after this:
1) I located the manufacturer of the CO2 regulator and contacted them about the possibility of getting a washer. They informed me that the regulator was redesigned and did not need a washer. Haier was supposed to include an update with their user manual (they didn't, and customer service obviously wasn't aware of this change).
2) I located information on Haier America and faxed their CEO an scathing letter telling him what I thought about spending $500 for something and not being able to use it at the function I bought it for! Lo and behold, the next day I received a call from their corporate offices saying they would be overnighting me the missing washer. I explained I had learned it wasn't needed, but the woman calling me wasn't taking any chances. She overnighted it to me anyway. Moral of the story: Make your voice heard when you recieve bad service.
Anyway, my 'washerless' set up is now working fine and I'm loving the unit.

The Haier HBF05EBSS Kegerator with Stainless Steel Door is the only full-size keg beer cooler with the ability to be turned into an all-refrigerator with two shelves. This unit also comes with an attractive metal safety rail to help keep mugs and glasses from sliding off. This unit comes with everything you need except the keg. You will need to get the CO2 tank filled locally. You should look up gas suppliers in your local yellow pages to find a place to get the tank filled. A full CO2 tank should last about 5 to 6 kegs.

Aluminum Can Crusher 10 Cans 10 Seconds Review

Aluminum Can Crusher 10 Cans 10 Seconds
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was easy to setup and it crushes well. I also like the space on the bottom where it falls out when it is crushed and I put a box under it to catch it. There are other can crushers out there which can crush one at a time which I have used before. This is more quick and more acurate in crushing it down and not popping out and easy to drop into a box. My only problem is that when you order it, the prices is right, just the shipping can increase the cost 50% or more depending on the place you are ordering from. If you can get a shipping cost of $5.00 or less, then I think it is a good deal. I just did not like ths shipping costs being so much. If it was at a local store, I would buy it without thinking twice because the tax would be much less than shipping.

This is the can crusher you've been waiting for. Brand New! IT HOLDS 10 ALUMINUM CANS!You load it up with cans, crush 10 of them in a row, and then reload. The cans fall out the bottom. I use a 5 gallon bucket to catch them. It is made of high tech reinforced nylon. Never needs painting! Mounts with 3 screws. Easy assembly too. Works way better than metal can crushers in damp or outdoor environments. Why? Because it can't rust! Check my Feedback to see how my customers love this tool. Most of the time your visitors will crush your cans for you because this thing makes the can crushing chore FUN!Recyclers rejoice as they can speed up their work. This also makes a great gift for friends or relatives. Especially great for tailgators and other beverage type get-togethers. I have had mine for about 5 years now. IT WORKS GREAT!Please note that I found out that United Kingdom cans may not fit as they are too big. As far as I know only American soft drink and beer cans will fit. A 16 oz. can will fit, but only one at a time. It will also crush the 12 oz. Coors cans which everyone knows is a little taller than other cans. You can pack them right in there and it crushes them great.

BeerTender from Heineken and Krups B90 Home Beer-Tap System Review

ALas.....it seems I as many of the early adopters are learning the pain of the KRUPS BEERTENDER.
I was very excited for this product and my girlfriend bought one for me for my birthday in APRIL 2008.
THe product is well designed and works well when it works.
Problem is...I only used it 2x...and the unit stopped cooling.
One thing customers of this item should know is that you really aren't supposed to store a Heineken Draught Keg in it for more than a day (they say this in the manual) and that you are supposed to remove the keg and put it in the fridge if you plan on storing it longer.
ISn't that kinda stupid and defeats the purpose of such an expensive unit?? Also...it only uses Mini-Kegs that have their own CO2 pressuration built in like the Heineken Mini-keg.....so expect your choice (if any) to be limited.
Anyhoo, I used 2 Draught Kegs in a 6 week period....and the unit stopped cooling. I contacted KRUPS and received an RMA and had the unit shipped in for repair on 6/23/08. After hearing nothing I followed up on 7/24/08 as to the status of my machine, they apologized and put in a rush order to have a replacement shipped after emailing them 2x and calling.
My latest phone conversation (8/19/08) I was told that they had been backordered on the machine until this past week and should receive my replacement machine in 2 weeks....we'll see.
While I like the machine......the rep said that this being a brand new product for Krups they were experiencing issues in servicing of the unit. I am thinking this machine was not ready to be released and that the cooling unit is very likely to fail in every unit.
I would have to say there might be a better options if you plan to use this type of dispenser regularly.
UPDATE (9/21/08):
Received my warranty replacement unit at the end of AUGUST. To my surprise.......KRUPS did not repair my machine...they sent a completely NEW Unit!! YAY!
So far the unit has worked perfectly and I have used it 1x since i received it. Hopefully they have resolved any issues they were experiencing in manufacturing so I or others won't experience the cooling failure that I did with my 1st unit. So Far So Good.....there are also rumors of more varieties of Draught Keg coming to the US like they have in Europe....that would definitely make the unit a more worthwhile purchase rather than a creature comfort.

Mini Kegerator Refrigerator & Draft Beer Dispenser - EdgeStar Review

Mini Kegerator Refrigerator and Draft Beer Dispenser - EdgeStar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Background:
I first thought of the BeerTender from Heineken as the 5L kegs are simple, easy to use and a big hit at parties and keeping the beer cool and out of the fridge is a challenge. While in a specialty shop I saw several other foreign brands of beer also in 5L kegs, but to my surprise, their tap was at the bottom like a Gatorade cooler. I then learned that the Heineken Draft kegs have an internal pressure system and that the Beertender would only work with that particular type of keg.
The Search:
At first it didn't really matter that much to me because I love Heineken and Heineken Light. After seeing the variety of beers available in the 5L minikegs, I decided to start shopping for a kegerator that would work with more than just the Draftkeg line. A low price was important, but so was functionality and reliablility. While searching, I found several other options with most looking similar and having the same features. You can go crazy and get one of the $300+ models out there, but I'd only recommend doing that if you have that kind of cash-flow to spend on a counter-top beer dispenser.
The Product:
The EdgeStar Mini Kegerator jumped out at me first because of its low price, and second, because it's identical to the more expensive Avanti MBD5L Mini Kegerator. (Note: Although the Edgestar doesn't display a drip tray like the Avanti, one is included.) For about $50, you can purchase a CO2 kit to tap and use non-pressurized 5L kegs from any other brewer (I've even seen it suggested that home-made beer can be placed in such a keg.) The kit comes with three 16-Gram CO2 cartridges (the small silver ones that you can pick up at Walmart) which are enough to dispense 3 or more 5L kegs. If you don't feel like replacing the cartridge every time you change the keg out, the space provided for the CO2 canister is large enough to accommodate a larger (340-Gram) CO2 Cylinder which is enough to dispense up to 20 5L kegs! The EdgeStar comes with a direction booklet, a cleaner bottle to wash out the system, an AC cable and DC cable, and an adapter for the Heineken Draft kegs.
The Perks:
- Having draft beer right in your own home!
- Looks great and comes in silver or black
- Better than the BeerTender for the following reasons:
o Costs less even with the CO2 kit
o CO2 kit allows you to use any 5L keg
o Has a controllable temp fan (38-54 degrees Fahrenheit) for a variety of beer types
o Comes with a DC adapter for tailgate parties and RV use!
The Bad:
- Can be tricky for people who don't normally pour from a tap
- Pours a lot of head if not setup properly (I suggest coiling the tube and getting it as horizontal as possible to mitigate this.)
- Tap is plastic, not stainless steel
Five stars because even with the few shortfalls, it blows the BeerTender away!

I just brewed my first 5 gallons of beer with this kit. It has everything you need besides a pot to boil the wort. The pressure activated bottling attachment makes the bottling process a breeze and all the bottles end up having a really consistent fill. I would recommend "The Complete Joy of Home Brewing" to go along with it instead of using the directions this kit comes with. The book breaks the brewing process down into easy to follow steps for the beginner and contains a lot of useful information ranging from the history of home brewing to advanced brewing techniques.

Coopers Brewery Micro-Brew Beer Kit Review

Coopers Brewery Micro-Brew Beer Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the kit has some substantial drawbacks, which I'll discuss shortly, it was enough to get me started in home brewing and teach me enough to know what upgrades I needed to make. I rated it a 4 based based primariliy on its value.
The drawbacks are these: 1) the screw on lid to the fermenter bucket is very difficult to take off - it desperately needs a better way to grip it while holding the bucket still. I'm sure I looked pretty comical with the [round] fermenter stuck between my knees while trying to get a grip on the slippery lid; 2)the valve would not stay tightened within the fermenter bucket, and any attempt to open or close the valve with one hand merely twisted the whole valve assembly around in the bucket instead of just rotating the valve open or closed. Sometimes it was very difficult to have two hands free to work the valve. 3) although it was a nice touch to have included a bottle filler with the kit, I wished it was a little better made as it constantly dripped (and the valve is not the size for other bottle fillers, I discovered). Note that some of these problems (size discrepancies, for instance) may be related to the fact that the kit is made in Australia and I'm rating it based on my U.S. experience.
Some of the positives - 1) the bottles are large (25 oz.) so there's less washing, bottling, etc.; 2)the fermenter is HUGE so there's little worry of any disastrous beer explosions during the initial and heavy fermentation period; and 3) the Cooper's carbonation drops are unbelievably easy to use and a great idea (if you keep bottling and don't start kegging or mini-kegging as I did).
Overall, the kit is viable and can get you through enough batches to know whether you like to brew beer at home. If so, you may find yourself wanting to buy more and/or better equipment and using more traditional brewing methods. The canned "hopped" extract beers, like the one included in the kit, are not in my opinion as good as unhopped extract brews using grains and hops, especially if corn sugar is used as the primary fermentable. But it's important to remember that the equipment in the kit can be used for hopped or unhopped extract brewing. If you're curious about brewing beer, but don't want another mortgage to get started, I'd recommend this kit. Then after a few batches (make sure you let them age!) you'll know whether you're interested enough to move onward/upward, keep using the Cooper's Kit (perhaps with unhopped extract and grains), or post it on Ebay.

Mr. Beer Premium Edition Home Microbrewery System Review

Mr. Beer Premium Edition Home Microbrewery System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received the Mr. Beer kit for Xmas, and it's a good system overall. It serves as a very good introduction to home brewing, but it does have some downsides as well.
Good bits:
-The system is about as easy as it could be.
-The instructions are clear and simple.
-The fermenting tank is small (2 gallons), meaning that you don't have to wait around for a long time to taste the final product. With your more normal 5 gallon kits, you have to bottle a LOT of beer, and wait a bit longer for fermentation.
-There's dozens of mixes available on their homepage, and they offer a lot of quality products at reasonable prices. Join their club to avoid the expensive shipping charges.
Not so good bits:
-The fermenter is almost too simple. A proper airlock design would make it more foolproof as to tell when fermenting is complete, as well as avoiding contamination of the beer.
-The included mixes, while of good quality, produce a rather poor beer by comparison to what it is possible to make with the kit. Their website has a lot better product than what they include in the kit, and this gives some people bad impressions of the kit itself. The fault is not with the kit, but with the very basic starter beer in the package. The separate mixes they sell in stores are not much better, being all very basic brews. They're not bad, but they're not great either. Mediocre at best.
-Sterilization (which is possibly the most important part of home brewing) is difficult because the fermenter is not dishwasher safe. A higher quality plastic that could stand high temperatures would be a better overall choice for the fermenting keg, since automatic dishwashers are a great way to sterilize your equipment easily.
My suggestions on how to use this kit correctly:
-Go to their website and pick up some of the more advanced receipes instead of using the mixes as given initially. If you've used those included mixes, don't be disappointed overall, it's that the mixes are very basic. Using the better receipes and the better ingredients, you can make quite incredible brews.
-Keep the fermenter in an enclosed dark space during the fermenting process. I recommend a large cooler. This avoids contamination of the product as well as keeping it at a steady temparature.
-Be very, very careful to sterilize completely. The OneStep cleanser they include is very good, but you do have to use it properly. Read the instructions and be sure that everything gets cleaned extremely well.
-No matter what the instructions say, bottle conditioning takes longer than a week. Really. Wait 2 weeks, preferably 4, before you crack the first bottle. The beer only gets better the longer you let it mature in the bottles.
-Go easy on the sugar. Too much sugar in the bottles and they will explode, or taste like cider.
If you use the kit as intended and with a careful eye for cleanliness, then you can produce some excellent quality brews in a very short time. But follow those instructions precisely. Anything less will result in poor quality brews.
----
After using it for over a year, I have some more things to add:
- DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE LID. The lid must allow the gases produced MUST escape. This is especially true with their higher alcohol mixes and stouts. If you overtighten, the end result will be spilled beer and a ruined keg. I brewed a dopplebock using the keg, and overtightened it. Result: The keg overpressurized and almost burst. Some foam came out of the top of the keg, and spilled into my cooler. The residue, once it dried, provided food for.. well.. not so nice creatures. The keg was naturally unusable afterwards. However, this was my own fault, and a new keg only cost me $10 through the Mr. Beer website, so it was not a total loss. And the beer (since it was not contaminated due to the pressure differential, I bottled it anyway) turned out to be absolutely spectacular. So whatever you do, don't tighten it too much. A little hand pressure for tightening is enough.
- Again, go easy on the sugar when bottling! Somebody told me that they had one of the plastic bottles burst on them and the remainder tasted like cider. This is the result of excessive sugar in the bottling process. I highly recommend you get the sugar measure that they sell, if you are bottling in the 12oz, 22oz, or 1 liter sizes. The sugar measure is very easy to use and exact in nature. Takes out the measurements and guesswork.
- Finally, I do not recommend normal bottles with a capper. These are difficult to use and contrary to popular belief, do not produce better beer. The screw top bottles are simplest because they hold the pressure in properly and are trivially simple to use. Alternatively, Mr. Beer sells 16 oz "Grolsch style" bottles on their site, which are the rubber grommeted wired cappers, and they work very well. If you must bottle with glass, get those. Or go find similarly capped bottles of beer and use those bottles (after dishwashing, of course). Glass is much easier to sterilize because it's disahwasher safe. Just take the rubber caps off first.

BeerTender from Heineken and Krups B95 Home Beer-Tap System Review

BeerTender from Heineken and Krups B95 Home Beer-Tap System

If you love draft beer but don't drink enough to need a full keg this is for you!
I like my beer ice cold poured in a SMALL frozen glass .... I dont drink enough to warrant a full size type draft keg machine with all the hassles that come with it (like Co2) this unit is simple: just drop the draughtkeg in and your done. This unit has a thermostat setting that lets you set it to 36 degrees , the other unit will not allow you to lower the setting so this alone makes it worth the extra $20.
With the draughtkeg and beertender you get a nice little fridge who's sole job is to keep that keg ice cold and easy to pour... since it has a bottom drip tray you can pour your draught " english " style by letting the first half second just pour out to clear the foam then quickly put your glass in to get a nice pour with little foam - you cant do that when pulling from the big fridge....
What makes it nice is you can pour as much or more importantly as little as you want... like I said I like a small beer glass that gives me nice cold gulps of beer then just pour more - no wasted warm beer just nice and cold PLUS its fun to pour ! Lets face it this is a luxury item because you could just keep it in the big fridge and pour from there but thats no fun! Plus the big fridge is not going to maintain that keg at a constant 36 degrees!
The unit itself is pretty small and very light - it uses some induction type cooling so there is no typical fridge motor its a small fan - now this fan will work hard at first to get that keg down to temp but once its done it gets quieter - its loud enough that you should not put it in an area that is normally quiet .. also since it does not use a fridge type motor it will not work outdoors! It uses the ambient air to help cool the unit - anything over 85 degrees and it will not be able to maintain the temp - so indoor use only.
So to sum up - if you like the Heineken draghtkegs you will enjoy this item - is it necessary ? No , but you will get a much more enjoyable feeling when pouring that perfectly chilled draught. I hope Heineken adds more to the draughtkeg line up like they have in Europe... remember it only works with Heineken so if you dont like Heineken then this item will not work for you...
B95 or B90 ? Spend a little more and get the fancy lcd screen and temp control - especially if you like the cold beer because the other unit is preprogrammed at 39 or 40 deg ... but some people like a warmer draught but the price difference is so little you might as well ' go all the way ' ....
Cheers!

Mr Beer 20629 Brewmaster's Select Home Beer-Making Kit Review

At first I was skeptical about this kit because I had a similiar one a few years ago that gave disappointing results. However, the Mr. Beer brewmaster kit made a pleasantly surprising good batch of home brew on the first attempt. This was the American Devil IPA premium. I even "cheated" by only fermenting for 10 days and carbonated for 10 days where the instructions recommended 14 days for each. My connoisseur friends on this subject really enjoyed this IPA batch as well. That was the icing on the cake for me. So, I'm very excited to continue brewing with this kit. As I write this, I have my second batch carbonating in the bottles and my third and fourth batches fermenting. I bought another fermenter from Mr. Beer directly so that I may have at least two batches in the rotation at a time. The hardest part is waiting for it to become "drinkable". That reminds me, I'm parched. Time for a cold one. Cheers!

Beer Mixes for the Beer Machine Review

Beer Mixes for the Beer Machine
Average Reviews:

I have a beer machine and love the beer it makes. I ordered the mix and it is supposed to come with the co2 cartridge as well as the defoamer disk. I called Brookstone ahead of time to make sure it had the required cartridge and defoamer disk. They assured me that it did. When I got it, guess what? It was not there. It has been about two months and I still have not made my beer. I called to complain and it was resolved. They gave me a full refund, but I STILL DO NOT HAVE BEER! I love the product, but it is not possible to make the beer without those items. The actual Beer Machine Company sends them automatically because they know you have to have it. It is like selling a car without a motor when you need a running car. It doesn't make sense. It would be great if they sold it with the essential materials.

i have made 3 batches with it and everyone has come out perfect. just add the mix water and a packet of brewers yeast and even a small packet of baking yeast will work. its easy no mess and you dont need to add any sugar unlike its lower priced ugly cousin mr beer. the only recomenation i have is when you pour half of it with water then add the mix stir it untill almost disolved then add more water. make sure its alittle warmer then room tempature. alot of it will disolve. then add the yeast and wait about 5 days then put it in the fridge for 10 and it will be perfect.
