Starbucks Ground Coffee Espresso Roast, 12 oz Review

1. "Espresso" is not a roast. It's a drink. In northern Italy they make espresso from Vienna roast, in southern Italy they use French. Starbucks appears to be using French roast, so they should just label it French roast like any normal person would.
2. The product description says "Taste Espresso Roast as both a shot of espresso and brewed in a coffee press. This is one versatile coffee!" This is patently absurd. It's pre-ground coffee, and it's either for use in espresso machines or presses, but not both. Here's why:
Making a shot of espresso requires a very fine grind. Making coffee press coffee requires a very course grind. If you have ground coffee that is appropriate for espresso machines, it will pass through the filter in a coffee press and you will have a cup of sludge. If you use ground coffee that does not pass through a press's filter in an espresso machine, you do not get espresso. You get cafe crema, which is a good, but entirely different, beverage.
Therefore, a "Universal Grind" is an impossibility. They should tell you on the label what kind of coffee maker it's ground for, like normal people.
3. It's over-roasted. Starbucks has an excellent bean-sourcing operation that buys better coffee than any other company of its size. Then they roast all their beans Vienna or French. Most beans taste best at a particular level of roasting that varies with the bean, and for most beans that level is not Vienna or French. So why roast all your beans too dark? I guess it's just easier that way. Also, it lets them rename Vienna Roast as "Starbucks Roast" because the Austrians don't seem to care.
That said, this is still better than what you get in the supermarket - Starbucks specializes in coffee and sources much better beans than any of the companies that also make cheese, hot dogs, shampoo or cigarettes.
Anyway, if you really want some good coffee, do this:
Buy a grinder. Nothing makes coffee lose flavor like keeping it around after grinding. If you have a drip coffee machine, get a grinder with spinning blades; if you have something else like a press or vacuum pot, get a grinder with burrs. If you have an espresso machine, get a very nice grinder with burrs. Amazon has good deals on all three kinds, just do a search for 'coffee grinder'. It's not that much money, and if you're somebody who's willing to pay for Starbucks you should invest in one.
Find a local coffee shop that roasts their own coffee and gives you the date it's roasted on. Freshness matters! Good beans don't taste nearly as good after they've been sitting around.
Ask the people at your local shop to tell you about the correct amount of beans to use. Most people don't use the right amount. If you don't use enough, your coffee comes out bitter, especially if you have a drip machine. Not enough coffee means the beans you do have get too much exposure to hot water, which makes bitter coffee.

(More customer reviews)This has to be one of the worst coffee makers that I have ever used. The problems that I found were also stated by other people as well. I wish that I could give it less than one star. The problems that I found are as follows:
1. Attempting to fill water storage area for first time turned into a mess when I was focused on filling it up while being half asleep. Found that water was spilling out of the back from holes put there in manufacturing process. Idiotic design.
2. Unit leaks water from somewhere onto counter. Mystery leak that others complained about as well.
3. Carafe is the worst that I have had the misfortune of dealing with. Try to pour a cup of coffee & end up leaking on the counter, floor, etc. Whoever designed the carafe should be flogged or at least ridiculed by coworkers.
4. Unit overall is a mess to deal with. Everything about it is messy. The stupid swivel water dispenser is more trouble than it is worth.DON'T waster your money on this garbage. Find another model or different brand.

I tried to replace it, but Bodum's online purchase process didn't work. I purchased another brand from Progressive ([...]) at my local hardware store for about half the price. I like the plastic frame of the Progressive because it retains the glass flask for improved handling and cleaning. The Bodum flask was loose in the metal frame and could slide out.

Planetary Design Double Shot Travel French Press Mug Review

(More customer reviews)Like software, which I work with, product design sometimes needs more than one iteration to get things exactly right. So it was with the Double Shot mug, which I reviewed here based on the first edition, and which (while liking the concept very much) I had two basic problems with:
- The handle of the mug was held on with only a single rivet and broke off after about six months of use
- The French press lid didn't have a complete cover or closure - the filtered mouth was always open
I'm happy to report that version 2.0 of the Double Shot gets both of these things (and a few more I didn't point out) exactly right. The new handle may be riveted on behind the scenes, but is also secured with a pair of very visible and business-like screws; it's also got a closure for the French press lid just as it does for the regular coffee lid. In addition, the designers have added a couple of new helpful features:
- The "secret compartment" at the bottom and the container it conceals both have screw-on lids now instead of just popping off. This greatly reduces the incidence of coffee grounds flying everywhere (that lid is tight!)
- The handle now has a ring for a carabiner clip, allowing you to attach the mug to your backpack, bike or whatever. Hands-free coffee! (at least until you want to drink it)

In short, I'm very happy with the new version of the mug. Yes, the price point is still up there ($30), but if the current version proves to be as sturdy in other respects as its predecessor as well as having a longer-working handle, I won't be in the market for another travel mug for several years.

(More customer reviews)I've owned this mug for a couple of years and used it primarily for camping. Dan from Rochester got it right with his commentary, so I'll add just a few points.
The concept is ideal for camping and reduces the effort to make really good coffee. However, the bad points regarding the plunger not going down far enough; leaking lid; etc. are all right on. Also, the cup is double-wall plastic for insulation. The inside sleeve on mine cracked when I poured boiling hot water in it!
I would certainly purchase a similar item again, though not this one. Bodum just needs to increase the quality. I would pay twice the price for higher quality.
Overall...not recommended.

The double wall construction works fantastic and if properly preheated it will deliver a very hot cup of tea more than an hour after the first one. The handle stays cool throughout the process. Construction is first rate. You will not need a napkin anymore to catch the drips after pouring becouse there are none. The large lid, which is also double wall construction, makes access to the inside easy and a breeze to clean. Becouse it is metel there's no more worriing about breaking it. The infuser is also heavey construction and has a nice ring to remove it easily from the pot. The polished finish on the outside of it gives it a very attractive apearance as well.

(More customer reviews)This is my first french press. My sister and brother in law only use these. So we went to visit them on vacation and coffee has never been the same. I tossed the drip crap we had and bought one of these from my local Sur La Table for $30. It makes the best tasting coffee ever! I do not use coarse ground as it states. That was a little weak for us. I use fine grounds, making an almost espresso strong coffee. I am now making home made lattes for great money savings!
Now the one con-the lid. Yes, it is cool to have a no spill feature, but you can't clean inside the lid! I can forsee some nasty growth in there sometime in the future. We use ours everyday. I thought about putting vinegar and hot water in and pouring that out to help, but then I have to be REALLY sure to get all that outta there before brewing again. Not worth the hassle for me.
I plan on returning this model tomorrow for one that just uses the beaker to pour and not some plastic part. Plus, staying away from the plastic is better for us in the long run anyhow.

To Use:
1.) Remove the plunger;
2.) drop a few spoonfuls of ground coffee into the glass beaker;
3.) fill the beaker a few inches with boiling water;
4.) stir;
5.) replace the plunger and press it down slowly through the water until it reaches the bottom of the beaker;
6.) pour and enjoy!
WARNING: If you're not used to coffee with a high caffeine content, go easy with this at first. An ensuing caffeine headache is almost guaranteed any day following a high-caffeine intake day UNLESS you continue to take in high caffeine levels at or near the same time of day. To avoid caffeine headaches, be consistent with your daily caffeine intake OR, withdraw from caffeine gradually, reducing the amount over a number of days.
Pros:
fast, easy, affordable, convenient, rinse-and-store clean-up
Cons:
A floating coffee granule or two may occasionally be found in the brew. For me, this isn't really a drawback and it only happens infrequently, particularly with fine-ground coffee.
Bialetti coffee makers are consistently among the best of the affordable genre of manual home brewers. This one's no exception.

The only beef I have with it is that the plastic base that the handle is attached to allows the thermal glass to slide out somewhat easily when it is hot and it is tipped over for pouring or dumping out the grounds. This could cause the glass to break if it were to fall out onto a hard surface. Cleanup is as easy as a 5 second rinse on the plunger and another 5 second rinse on the glass part.

Bodum Bean Ice French Press 1-1/2 Litre Iced Coffeemaker, 51-Ounce Review

(More customer reviews)I got this to make cold brew coffee concentrate and it works perfectly and easily. It is also great for large batches of hot brew too.

COLD BREW:
1. Add 12 scoops medium course grounds (scoop included)
2. Fill beaker with filtered water, leaving 1/2 inch room at the top
3. Stir grounds into water for about 45 seconds to saturate all the coffee
4. Place the bonus lid on french press and put in refrigerator for 12-24 hours depending on strength desired**
5. Once steeped for hours desired, remove lid and put filter lid on and press grounds to bottom of beaker
6. Mix coffee concentrate with water, either 1 parts concentrate to 2 parts water, or up to half concentrate and half H2O
I use 1/2 coffee concentrate, 1/2 milk over ice because I like it strong. My hubby prefers hot black coffee made with the concentrate and uses the half concentrate and half H2O ratio, then heats it in the microwave. We notice a definite absence of acid, which my husband prefers for taste reasons and I like because of taste and health reasons. When I am under stress, I have to take acid reduction pills for my stomach, being able to drink cold brew when under the gun has given me back my beloved cup of coffee without the stomach cramps.
TIP: Always use filtered water for cold brew since you will taste any and all funky flavors in your tap water. The water for cold brew doesn't get boiled so these flavors, which may disappear with boiling for hot coffee, are very present with cold brew.
**If you have the overhead clearance in your fridge, you can put the filter lid on and press it down about an inch to keep all the grounds under the waterline. The top knob will stick up about 8 inches, so be careful not to hit the lightbulb in the ceiling of your fridge. I have noticed a small difference in flavor, it comes out a bit richer/darker than if I use the bonus lid.

HOT BREW:
1. Add 12 scoops medium course grounds (scoop included)
2. Fill beaker with water that is just under boiling hot, leaving 1/2 inch room at the top
3. Stir grounds into water for about 15 seconds to saturate all the coffee (saturation is quicker in hot water)
4. Place filter lid on beaker, but don't press down until coffee has steeped for 4 minutes
This massive french press makes enough hot coffee to fill a carafe to the top and have a whole large mug of coffee left to pour. This worked great for a large party we had this past weekend, because I only have to make one pot of coffee instead of two like I did with our 8 cup Chambord press.

10 OTHER PROS:
1. It is nice that this one appliance does two jobs perfectly, it cuts down on the amount of kitchen clutter
2. No filters to buy
3. It cleans VERY easily and quickly
4. If you follow the directions, it is foolproof
5. It is sturdy and feels very well made even though the casing is plastic
6. Looks great, I leave ours out on the counter
7. It has a rubber seal and a thumb pressure pour spout, so coffee doesn't spill out if jostled in the fridge
8. 50 oz. of concentrate will last us all work week, so I only have to fill it on Sunday - speedy mornings!
9. There are no small screws or bits to lose, everything dismantles quickly with just a turn of the filter base
10.The handle is well designed, keeping your knuckles away from the glass if you are making hot coffee
Final tip: To get the top off when you first take it out of the box, twist the top a half inch and then pull the press screen out to remove the lid. There is a twist latch in this lid that my other Bodum french press does not have, and the instructions for using this press are folded up INSIDE the closed coffee press, LOL. Thought I'd pass on this bit of advice for those used to their Chambord press :)
UPDATE: After using this product constantly for almost 3 months, I have to say it is one of the all-time best things in my kitchen. I don't have to take as much acid-reduction medication as I did while drinking hot brew. The system is so streamlined for cold-brew concentrate that I don't even have to think about it. My hubby cannot believe how delicious cold-brew concentrate is heated up every morning, he says it is the smoothest way to brew coffee that he has ever had. I still highly recommend this product and will be purchasing more for gifts.

Ive had mine for over 9 months and use it almost everyday with no problems. It is basically a single serve coffee cup size.
I have not had any problems and would recommend to anyone who may be on the go a lot and needs just one good cup of coffee for the road.
I like the all glass design and the handle is rock solid (fused and NOT GLUED)

(More customer reviews)Got this for Christmas and am on my fifth day of use. I'm a fully converted french press freak and will never use my drip machine again except for social occasions where I need a bigger brew.
This press works great. It's easy to press the plunger (even though I have not yet acquired a good grinder to give consistent coarse grounds...my grinder is about as crappy as you can get), it's easy to clean and the coffee tastes great (richer, thicker and more smooth)...much better than a drip. I asked for the Bodum because of its reputation for quality and so far, I'm impressed.
I typically make enough coffee to fill 2 typical mugs (about 16-20 oz of coffee) and the unit appears about 2/3 full. I've not tried to make a full 34 oz, but it doesn't appear to really hold that much. We'll see.
The thermal sleeve is a bit of a waste, though. You really shouldn't leave coffee in a french press to sit because the flavors will continue to extract to the point of bitterness. I make two cups and pour the second into a small thermos until I'm ready. So, if you plan on drinking more than one cup out of this yourself, plan on acquiring a small thermos for this purpose.
My only other concern is that I have read reviews about cracking glass. I'd still prefer glass to any plastic container (not convinced of the safety/health of using plastics with hot products). As an engineer, I would recommend filling the unit with hot tap water while the water for your coffee is heating to near boiling. This will preheat the glass and minimize the thermal stresses as a result of pouring ~200 degree water into a room temperature glass container. Also, I would recommend letting the glass cool to room temperature before trying to wash/rinse with tap water.

I also love the coffee from a French press. Because I wanted to have the automatic capabilities with the French press, my options were few with the only other one available getting rather poor reviews. Reluctantly (and because I had a $100 gift certificate), I tried the West Bend for $39.99. IT IS FABULOUS. The water is VERY hot and so it makes a fabulous cup of coffee.

(More customer reviews)I just got this, and just tried it our for the first time, and I am madly in love with this espresso maker. The look is fantastic, I mean how often do you get to cook with something you're likely to see in the MOMA design wing? However, it's one thing to make a pretty object, but it's another to make a beautiful object that functions better than any other of it's kind: the design is fantastic. It pours without a single dribble, the handle doesn't get hot nor melts like your usual stove top maker, and it's Stainless Steel which means you're not going to leach out any nasty chemicals or flavors. I also love it because it give you the option to make a half batch, allowing this to function as a 3 cup when it's just you or a friend, or a 6 cup when you have company. I almost bought the 10 cup just so I could have the versatility of a 5/10 cup... but i'll never drink that much coffe... I mean it is espresso... which makes the 3/6 size ideal! I had lots of Bialettis when I lived in Italy, but I have a feeling nothing will be better than the espresso I make from my new Stella.
