16 inch Traditional Cast Iron Wok (incl. ring) Review

Hi. I read the previous review and just wanted to put in a correction and a FYI so people don't think these cast iron cooking utensils are defective. I cook alot with cast iron and have bought new cast iron cookware from the US and China. When a cast iron cooking vessel is brand new and hasn't been "seasoned" by the manufacturer (like Lodge does for some of their skillets and such), it is covered with a thin film of machine oil to prevent rust and corrosion in transit. This is what needs to be washed off before use. Non-seasoned cast iron is a very gray color- indeed, almost looking painted gray if you're expecting it to look black. It will not develop the black patina until you start cooking with it. It is essentially baked on oil that turns the iron black. The best way is to season your new pan is to coat the whole (dry) pan inside and out with vegetable oil and put it in the oven to bake. A very thorough explanation of the seasoning process is given at the Lodge Manufacturing website: www.lodgemfg.com When you're done cooking with your cast iron, scrub it out with hot water only, and then put it on the stove-top to dry. Re-apply a bit of oil as needed. Iron rusts without this protection to moisture from washing or in the air. Cast iron does take a bit of maintenance, but is a superior and very safe cooking surface. Enjoy.

A very traditional design that has been used in the Chinese countryside for centuries. Now it is available in the U.S. through the Wok Shop. Round bottom only and 41/2 inches in depth. Small metal handles. Retains heat, cooks evenly, quickly and efficiently and imparts the Chinese "wok hee" (wok flavor). Must be seasoned

Excellent rice cooker. So far, I've used it for white and brown rice with and without the automatic timer and it works great. I'll use it for shushi next week. With the automatic timer feature you set up the machine and then tell the rice cooker the time of day when you want your rice to be ready. After that time it switches automatically into 'keep warm' mode so your rice is ready to eat in case you're delayed. This is one of the main reasons I bought this specific model.
A few things to note so you can make a more informed purchase.
1- Cup size is different. I guess a japanese cup is different than those used in the US. Therefore, 10 cups in this case actually translates to 7.5 US-sized cups of rice.
2- Cooking time is longer than 'normal'. I included the estimates for some types of rice straight from the manual. The zojirushi website also has estimates.
a- Quick cooking (only white rice): 35-45 min
b- White Rice: 51-60 min
c- Sushi rice: 47-58 mn
d- Brown rice: 82-108
3- The minimum amount of rice you can make with the 10 cup model is 1 cup except for sweet, mixed, and brown rice where the minimum is 2 cups. Mixed rice is one where you ad a few other ingredients that will cook together with the rice 9eg. soup stock, soy sauce). For the 5 cup the minimum you can make is 1 cup for all types of rice except porridge where you can make 0.5 cups. Again, these are the smaller cup sizes.
4- For those with small kitchens, the 10 cup machine has the following dims (WxDxH in inches): 11x14.2x9.4. The 5 cup is 10x13x8.1
Enjoy perfect rice every time. Spend your time preparing other parts of your meal.

Clover Quick Yo Yo Maker Review

What a clever product and it's very easy to use. You just sandwich a piece of fabric between the disk and the holder, trim it and sew around the edges. Then pop out the disk, pull, and voilà, a pretty little yo-yo to decorate something with. I'm using mine to make a soft fabric doll for my daughter. The package comes with a little insert of ideas to use the yo-yo. Don't be fooled by the size, though, this extra large makes a yo-yo only about two inches wide when finished.

Sanyo 3-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cookers/Warmers with Bread-Baking Functions Review

Sanyo 3-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cookers/Warmers with Bread-Baking Functions

When I saw it had a bread baking function, I was curious. I didn't expect a whole lot but I figured if the bread baking isn't great, I'd always have an oven anyway. So I took the chance.
I just used frozen bread dough (the one with 3 loaves in a bag). 1 loaf was a bit too big so I pinched off the end to make it smaller.
after 90 minutes I opened the lid it was all the way to the top. I then flip it over to brown the other side. Now the instruction says after 40 minutes you have to punch it down. Well, I didn't because I didn't hear the buzzer. But since it baked fine, I don't even bother to punch it down. It bakes fine without doing so. I used Pizza dough. What's great is that for a quick loaf, it won't heat up the whole kitchen. It doesn't use unnecessary eletricity(or gas) because you don't have to turn on the big oven. When we decide to have Italian, I just pop one piece of thawed dough. By the time the dinner is ready, bread is done. It doesn't produce dark crust, instead, it comes out with very light crust. Inside is so soft like steamed bun. It is so yummy. I also tried sweet roll dough with cinnamon, currant and sugar. It was great, too. I'm sure you can get really creative.
And by the way, it also cooks great rice, too. I used to own Zojirushi and I believe Sanyo cooks better rice than that. Not that Zojirushi is bad, it was an older model. This rice cooker's inner bowl is much thicker so that might be why....
Anyway, I am so glad I bought this.
