Technivorm Moccamaster KBTS Coffee Brewer with Thermo Carafe Review

Technivorm Moccamaster KBTS Coffee Brewer with Thermo Carafe

I have had this unit for four years and it is still going strong. The water temperature and shutoff on the filter housing make this the Ferarri of coffee makers. There is no timer, so you actually have to make the coffee. I like to let the filter fill with hot water with the flow restrictor shut. This allows me to stir the coffee and wet the entire contents, allowing it to absorb the water fully. I then allow the coffee to flow on the first setting (slow). If you don't mind a little labor and you like stick shifts, this is an amazing machine.
Update: Still use this machine daily, but there are cones now available (Clever Coffee Dripper) with the flow restrictor that do similar work (cheaper) if you don't need the carafe, don't mind heating your own water, or like to brew one or two cups at a time. Still best machine IMO.

First, if you are interested in this coffee maker. Buy the EC-BD15. Amazon has it for about $68 and free shipping. It is the same as the EC-BD15BA. We bought the EC-BD15. Our EC-BD15 had an inserted sheet in the instruction manual that corrects the manual by replacing the #3 filter wording for the #4 filter wording. The #4 filter fits fine, no cutting or anything. Apparently the the EC-BD15BA has the wording corrected in the manual and prints it on the box. If that is worth the difference in cost then go for it. It really just looks like a translation problem for the American market that uses #4 filters.
The coffee maker is exactly 15 inches tall. So make sure you have room under a cabinet if you store it there. My wife says the coffee stays hotter than in our old Mr Coffee thermal model. This caraffe is unbreakable because it is solid steel. No glass insert like our old Mr Coffee.

Black & Decker TCM830 10-Cup Thermal Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker Review

Black and Decker TCM830 10-Cup Thermal Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker

We had this coffee maker for about 9 months, then it just stopped working halfway through a brew cycle. I could not find any other reviews for it online, so I'm not sure if this is typical or not.
What I liked about it: the thermal carafe kept the coffee hot for quite awhile as long as you take it off of the machine right after brewing so that the brew-through holes close up. It is easy to fill since the water resevoir is removable. I also like the look of it. It seems fairly sturdy, and it was very easy to pour (no spilling issues as I have read about other machines).
What I didn't like: The brew-through lid has small holes that the coffee, soap, and water get into and it is very hard to get out. You have to shake it very hard to get the liquid out, and I felt like I needed to rinse it repeatedly to be sure to get any residual soap out. The pot itself has a very small opening so you have to use a bottle brush. It also has a lip that makes it hard to fully empty.
I'm not sure if we will get another of the same or try something else. It seems like alot of the thermal pots have similar cleaning issues.

Balck & Decker's 10 cup Stainless Steel Thermal Coffee Maker has that smooth sleak look that become very popular in homes across the country. The advantage of Thermal Coffee Makers is that you do not have to re-heat your coffee or leave your coffee over a heating element which causes the flavor to be comprimised. Simply brew and trust that each cup will have the same great flavor every cup.

Update: This note is being added about 6 months after my inital review. We too have experienced the problem with coffee overflowing on to the countertop. I very quickly learned that is after inserting the pot into the maker I pivot the pot so that the handle is as far left as possible, the spillage does not happen. This method has been successful for the past 200 pots made. It's a weird quirk that shouldn't be necessary, but I otherwise stand by my review.
The best coffeemaker we have ever owned is a long since discontinued Starbucks Barista with a thermal carafe. It was close to perfection for almost 10 years. Even after some trim pieces fell off, it continued to be a reliable performer. After several years of regular use, the plate on the bottom of the carafe top began to break, one piece at a time. The Barista continued to make great coffee, it just didn't hold the temperature as well as it originally did.
Earlier this year we despaired that we would have to go back to buying makers that work for a few months and then die. My wife, after hours of searching spotted this familiar face in the crowd. We ordered in December and it arrived today. To say it was worth the wait is an understatement. We now know that we have years of fresh, hot, reliable coffee making ahead of us. The only difference between this model and the original Starbucks is the it now uses a cone filter instead of a flat bottom. No big deal at all.
Footnote: "Old Reliable" the Starbucks Barista worked right through this morning, its retirement day. It's not headed for the trash however, there spare parts to be salved for our beautiful new baby.
When, (and if), this machine becomes available again, click 'n' buy. You won't regret it!

Attractively housed in brushed stainless steel, this coffeemaker not only looks great on the counter, but it also brews up to 12 cups of great-tasting coffee at a time. Simply add a measured amount of ground coffee, fill the removable water tank at the sink (no messy spills to clean up), press the "auto on" button, and it takes care of the rest. The machine's 24-hour programmable timer can also be set to delay the brew for a later time--exceptionally convenient for "wake-up" coffee or for having a pot ready and waiting to serve to dinner guests after the main course. Even more, the unit's 1- to 4-cup brew option allows for brewing a smaller batch of equally flavorful coffee, while its brew-pause function makes it possible to sneak a cup midbrew. The coffeemaker also provides a money-saving permanent cone filter, a spraying head for maximum flavor extraction from the ground coffee beans, and an activated charcoal filter that removes impurities in the water for better tasting coffee. Other highlights include a blue backlight LCD clock, an audible "ready" beep, a countdown timer that shows how long the coffee has been in the carafe, automatic shut-off for peace of mind, and a cord-storage compartment to keep countertops looking tidy. The included stainless-steel double-wall carafe keeps coffee hot for up to four hours--without the use of a hot plate, which means better flavor and lower energy use. A locking tab in the lid prevents accidental spills--depress the tab to allow coffee to flow freely from the nondrip spout. The carafe can also be used as an elegant serving pitcher for any hot or cold beverage. The coffeemaker measures 10-3/5 by 10-3/5 by 15-3/5 inches.

I replaced our old basic coffee machine because after 10 years, the carafe began to leak when you pour. Unfortunately, the new one leaks more! Coffee brews slowly (I like stronger coffee so I use the aroma button) and it could be hotter but really no complaints with the coffee once you get some in your cup. I have tried aligning the arrows, opening the lid a little more, opening a little less. but the carafe just leaks when you pour into your coffee cup unless you completely remove the lid. Pass on this one unless you have alot of patience and don't mind wiping the counter after you pour.

Simply pull the handle on the front of the machine, and easily access the water channel and coffee filter. Once brewed, keep your coffee hot for hours with the double-walled thermal carafe. Use the 24-hour digital timer to program the precise moment you want to enjoy your morning jolt. I just got this, and just tried it our for the first time, and I am madly in love with this espresso maker. The look is fantastic, I mean how often do you get to cook with something you're likely to see in the MOMA design wing? However, it's one thing to make a pretty object, but it's another to make a beautiful object that functions better than any other of it's kind: the design is fantastic. It pours without a single dribble, the handle doesn't get hot nor melts like your usual stove top maker, and it's Stainless Steel which means you're not going to leach out any nasty chemicals or flavors. I also love it because it give you the option to make a half batch, allowing this to function as a 3 cup when it's just you or a friend, or a 6 cup when you have company. I almost bought the 10 cup just so I could have the versatility of a 5/10 cup... but i'll never drink that much coffe... I mean it is espresso... which makes the 3/6 size ideal! I had lots of Bialettis when I lived in Italy, but I have a feeling nothing will be better than the espresso I make from my new Stella.

Capresso MT600 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Stainless-Steel Thermal Carafe Review

Capresso MT600 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Stainless-Steel Thermal Carafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Capresso MT-600 was introduced to replace the older MT-500 model. Both models have essentially the same functions and features, but there are two differences:
* The MT-500 has an aluminum die-cast housing. The MT-600 has a milled steel housing.
* The MT-500 was made in Portugal. The MT-600 is made in China.
I recently purchased the MT-600 to replace a Mr. Coffee automatic drip that served me well for over 15 years. I decided on the MT-600 because I wanted a thermal carafe and a built-in water filter. I also had faith in the Capresso brand because both my sisters have owned the Capresso CoffeeTEC model for many years, and their machines make absolutely fantastic drip coffee.
So I was very disappointed when I found that the Capresso MT-600 makes weak and lukewarm coffee. I read the directions carefully to make sure I was using the machine precisely as designed. I tried different beans and grinds to strengthen the coffee. I pre-heated the carafe prior to brewing to increase the temperature. But no matter what adjustments I made, the coffee always turned out weak and tepid.
I called Capresso to ask why the coffee comes out weak even when I double the standard amount of grounds. They told me that it has to do with how the water is dispersed (or rather, not dispersed) over the grounds during brewing. I went back and looked at the filter after brewing a pot, and sure enough, there was a deep divot right in the center of the grounds. So the problem seems to be that the water is driven down the middle of the filter rather than dispersed evenly over the grounds, leaving the grounds along the perimeter largely unbrewed.
I also measured the temperature of the coffee immediately after brewing, and as another reviewer mentioned, the coffee hits the carafe at 180 degrees. But even when the carafe has been pre-heated with boiling water, it loses its heat FAST. The other problem with the carafe is that even when you line up the dots exactly as directed, the coffee flow is more of a heat-depleting trickle than a pour. So while the coffee brews at 180 degrees, the temperature is much lower by the time it hits even your first cup.
I've been thinking about why my experience has been so different from that of veteran Capresso owners, and I can only conclude that the newer machines are not of the same quality as the older machines. Take a read through the user reviews posted for the MT-500 model and you'll notice that it's those people who have had their Capressos for more than 2 years who love and rave about their coffee makers. The same is true for the Capresso owners in my own family. My sisters' machines are going strong after 5+ years of heavy use, whereas my brand new Capresso has been a non-starter.
So sadly I will be returning the Capresso MT-600 in favor of a better machine. I doubt I'll find anything more beautiful in appearance, but there has to be a machine that makes better coffee, especially at this price!
(One final point... there seems to be some confusion about the materials used to build the MT-600. The heating block is lined with stainless steel to prevent water from coming in contact with the machine's aluminum components. So if you have aluminum concerns, the MT-600 has you covered. But like almost every drip coffee maker on the market, the water reservoir and filter holder are made of plastic. If you want to avoid plastic altogether, a French press or standard percolator may be your only options.)

Brew up to 10 cups of delicious, full-flavored coffee in under eight minutes with this programmable coffeemaker. The machine provides an illuminated, 24-hour, LCD digital clock and timer with soft-touch controls for easy operation. Set the timer so that fresh, hot coffee awaits dinner guests when it's time to serve dessert or so that the aroma of a freshly brewed pot fills the house a few minutes before the alarm goes off in the morning. The coffeemaker supplies a 10-cup stainless-steel thermal carafe with an ergonomic stay-cool handle, brew-through lid, and drip-free pouring spout. Removing the carafe from the coffeemaker stops the flow of coffee and allows for sneaking a quick cup before the end of the brewing process. Simply replace the carafe to restart the flow of coffee. Another thoughtful detail includes its special smaller-amount setting, which ensures maximum aroma when brewing just 3 to 5 cups at a time. For added convenience, the coffeemaker features a stainless-steel-lined heating system that eliminates contact with aluminum and reduces the need for decalcifying, the ability to retain programming during short power outages, and automatic shut-off after two hours for safety and peace of mind. Other highlights include a handy water-level indicator, a washable gold-tone filter (no need for disposable paper filters), a charcoal water filter that removes up to 82-percent of chlorine and other impurities from tap water, and an electronic indicator that shows when to replace the charcoal filter, as well as milled steel housing for superior strength and style and concealed cord storage to keep countertops looking tidy. The coffeemaker measures approximately 9 by 8 by 14 inches.

Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer Review

Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent slicer. I've used everything in it from carrots (when making my carrot version of thai papaya salad) julienned into matchstick thickness to wide thin slices of Korean radish. Never failed me.
Two drawbacks though:
1. The safety guard is a joke. It doesn't hold the veggies very well and is a pain to use effectively...which means I usually don't use it. I've cut my fingers on this mandolin twice now, which isn't bad for two years of regular useage, but I don't like the sight of blood so I'll leave it as a major detractor. Luckily for me, I cut myself on the julienne part and not the actual wide slicer. In other words, my finger meat was left shredded but intact. Whew!
2. The metal parts rust. Yep. They rust. Hence the reason I am now shopping around for another slicer. Don't know yet if I'll get another Benriner. Might look into the Bohn.
***Update***
Apparently Benriner realized the metal parts rusted because their mandolins now come with plastic screws to hold the julienne blades in place and to adjust the thickness level.

DeLonghi DCF210TTC Complete Frontal Access 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe Review

DeLonghi DCF210TTC Complete Frontal Access 10-Cup Drip Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is a well-made intelligently-designed coffee maker that works well, has some outstanding features, but has some significant differences from common automatic drip machines. Brewing into a thermal carafe with no burner or warming plate below the carafe means the coffee will not get the bitter taste of being kept hot by continuing to cook it. But, it also will probably not be quite as hot as some people would find ideal. It's a compromise and involves personal preference. For me, the coffee is plenty hot and remains at a pleasant drinking temperature for well over an hour.
The way the carafe and its lid have to be designed to keep the steam from escaping and thus keep the coffee warm means it will pour into your cup a bit more slowly than from an ordinary carafe. To me, that's not a big deal.
Some have reported not getting the carafe properly seated, thus allowing the freshly brewed coffee to spill all over the place. I have trouble imagining how that could happen and even more trouble imagining how anyone could let it happen more than once. I would expect any rational person, after having such a mess to clean up once, would make certain to seat the carafe correctly in the future. It's not rocket science.
There have been some comments by others that rating this as a 10-cup coffee maker is misleading. All manufacturers rate coffee maker capacity in terms of 5-ounce cups, demi tasse cups, if you will. I ordinarily use a 10-ounce mug. So being aware of this, I govern myself accordingly. No big deal, and nothing different from any other manufacturer. Frankly, I don't know of any normal person who actually uses demi tasse cups any more. That was a standard serving 100 years ago, but not today.
The instructions provided by DeLonghi are somewhat lacking and it doesn't help that they combine the instructions for several different models with different features into a single booklet, printed in several languages. Not as helpful as it could be. That said, most of the operation is fairly intuitive. It is a little bizarre that the clock shows the hour from midnight to 10:00 a.m. as "0." I guess that's a European standard, but find it strange on a clock that displays a.m. and p.m. rather than a 24-hour clock. That's just a little wierd to me, but does not diminish my enjoyment of this coffee maker.
Operation is reasonably easy and the quality of the brewed coffee is outstanding. I am well satisfied and do recommend this machine.

Norpro Stainless Steel Vertical Roaster, With Infuser
Average Reviews:

They did a comparison of many types and styles of roaters on America's Test Kitchens, and came down to two decisions: The best way to roast a chicken is vertically, and this product beat out much more expensive roasters as their favorite.
They suggested the following, which works perfectly even without using the infuser: Place roaster in a roasting pan to catch the drippings. Make some slits in the skin, then oil, season and bake bird at 325 until it reaches a temp of 140 deg in the breast meat. Take it out for a few minutes, raise the temp to 500 deg, and add a cup and a half of water to the drippings in the bottom of the pan. This keeps them from burning and smoking in the hotter oven. Next, cook for maybe 20 min more until you hit an internal temp or 160. This gets the outside super crispy. You then glaze that sucker with your favorite glaze, bake just another five minutes, then take it out and let it cool a bit. You can then use a separator to defat the watered down drippings and use it to make a quick gravy if you desire while the bird stands for a few minutes before slicing. It really does make the most evenly crispy roasted chicken I've ever seen without using a rotisserie.

Infuse your chicken with intriguing flavors using this vertical roaster. It will be the most flavorful and moist chicken you've ever had!Made of quality stainless steel, this roaster begins with a vertical roasting stand that attaches to a large, round drip tray (the stand collapses for easy storage). In the center of the drip tray sits a round dish with cone shaped top. Fill the round dish with herbs, spices, cider, juices or beer; as your chicken rests on the stand, the aromas and flavors from the liquids and herbs pass through the perforations on the cone shaped top, filling the cavity of the bird and adding moisture to the meat as it roasts. Mypressi Twist Portable Espresso Maker Review

I originally got the Mypressi Twist in March. I was blown away by the great shots it was able to produce after only a few tries of getting used to it. Who would have thought such great espresso could have come from this little thing? I really loved the thing, and used it each morning for one double shot. However, as time went on the cartridge life continually declined. At first, I could get the 4 double shots from one cartridge, then 3, then just one. I could hear the gas leaking out slowly. Thought it might be bad cartridges, but it was not. I contacted MyPressi and they said there were problems with some of the early units having a 'slow leak.' On their website, they say they'll send you a "slow-leak patch kit," but in reality there is no kit, they just replace the unit. So I'm thinking, "Wow, what great customer service!" As they said they would, the replacement unit was sent. It was not a new unit, and it was obviously used. The end cap had extra metal soldered into the end, and I could instantly see some gas leaking out from around the bowl (cold on metal). And it made sounds not like my other. I knew it would not last. Again, the Mypressi worked for about a month of daily 1 double shot use. Then, just like the last unit, it is down to 1 double (or single, ONE TIME use only) per cartridge. I again contacted mypressi and they will not respond. I tried posting this info on the help and message board on their site, but all posts relating to the Mypressi not working well are IMMEDIATELY erased (vs 'how do I do this' posts). The Mypressi has a year warranty, but the thing only lasts two months. I am very disappointed as I did love it at first. I tend to think this company may go under...

BUNN HT Phase Brew 8-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Brewer Review

BUNN HT Phase Brew 8-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Brewer

I was excited to see that Bunn had a new brew technique and was in the market to replace my old Mr. Coffee unit. I preordered the Bunn HT and got it on December 30, 2010. Initially, I thought that the Bunn HT made a good cup of coffee and was easy on the eyes, easy for set up, and easy for clean up. However, on January 17, 2011, my coffee maker quit heating water and I did not get my morning coffee which upset everyone in the household! I contacted Bunn and they sent me out a new unit and asked me to ship the broken one back to them. In 2 days, I received the new unit and peace was restored to the family.
Then, on February 1, the same problem occured - no heating of the water!! I contacted Bunn and told them of my unhappiness and asked if they were experiencing a rash of failures. They said that they had only had a few but for one person to have 2 failures in month is completely unacceptable!
Although I like the unit, I could not recommend this to anyone as long as it continues to go belly-up in such a short amount of time. I could understand one failure, but two??????????? BTW - I use filtered water for the coffee maker so it shouldn't need cleaning in less than 2 weeks.
Not impressed with the reliability and durability of the product.

Phase Brew is different than other drip coffee makers. Unlike ordinary machines, the Phase Brew doesn't "drip" right away. In fact, it doesn't drip at all. That's because the revolutionary Heat and Release Technology heats all the water to the right temperature during the 6-minute heating phase, then quickly releases it through the unique sprayhead for an optimal 4-minute brewing phase and amazing coffee flavor. Thermal carafe keeps brewed coffee warm for hours. BUNN Phase Brew - Brews better, not bitter.

Jan 18, 2011: This is THE BEST washer I've ever had or used! I LOVE it and can't say enough good about it. I bought it in Nov 2010 so I've had it about 2 months and I do 2 or 3 loads a day with a family of 5. I researched a lot. I subscribed to Consumer Reports to research even more. The bottom line was that the best washers according to user reviews were this Maytag MHWE450WW and the Samsung. I really wanted to support our U.S. economy and buy American...even though this washer is made in Germany. The dryer is made in Ohio. Maytag was not good several years ago but they recognized that and revamped their company and are now making commercial grade appliances built to last, like they used to be in our parents' day. This washer is built to last and truly is commercial grade. I went from a top loader to this front loader, and in my hours and hours and hours of reading reviews on every website I could find, I saw that people going from a top loader to front loader that uses less water, had a very hard time believing that the front loader could really wash their clothes clean because they saw through the window that the clothes were not swimming in water. I can tell you to not let that keep you from going front loader efficient because it gets my clothes cleaner than my old top loader. I also ready lots of people talking about how front loaders get stinky because they get moldy because the door is so airtight. Well I haven't had one bit of a problem with that because I always open the washer door and detergent door after clothes are finished washing and leave them open. Duh. How hard is that? I've left clothes in it overnight and then opened the door in the morning before dashing off to work and when I get home, the clothes are still fresh as a flower and no mold or mildew. The people who have written about that must keep the door closed so it is wet in there all the time and molds. Again, I have no problem with that whatsoever. I love the "sanitary" wash, the "power" wash, and the "whitest whites" wash. I love the way I can wash a king size blanket, king mattress cover, king sheets and pillowcases all in one load and they come out fresh and clean. I wash pillows and quilts and they come out great. I can wash 10 pair of men's jeans easily. Not having the agitator in the way makes you have so much more room for clothes. I love the way it has a heater that keeps the water hot for sanitizing and whitest whites. I love the way it spins clothes so "jet engine" fast that they are pretty much dry when the washer is done. My kids and husband and I like to watch it still because it's amazing. The dryer is great too and has a steam feature. I use way, way less detergent, which is saving money. I haven't checked my water and sewer bill but it's got to be less. And my dryer runs for a much shorter time. I have 2 teenage daughters and it has been their job to do laundry for many years, but now I find myself running in there to do laundry because it's actually fun. I know that sounds like a lie but it's not. Every time I do laundry, I come out saying, "I love my new washer and dryer". And I'm thankful to the Good Lord that I was able to buy them.
