Takoyaki Pan #H5180 Review

Takoyaki Pan #H5180
Average Reviews:

Beggars can't be choosers, and that seems to be true for takoyaki in the US. The delightful Osaka treat is rare enough even at Japanese restaurants, and the necessary implements for making it at home are even more so.
The absolute best set up is a round takoyaki pan, either on a gas or electric portable grill. Much of the fun of takoyaki comes from everyone sitting around the table and cooking together, putting in your favorite ingredients and popping the little balls out then eating them hot and fresh. That is how it is done in Japan, and home-cooking takoyaki isn't meant to be the province of a lone cook standing over a stove while everyone waits patiently for the food. It is a communal experience.
However, true takoyaki cookers are not readily available, and this pan is better than nothing. It doesn't take much, just a pan with round indents in it heavy enough to rest on the range while the balls are flipped over using long toothpicks. It isn't really designed to work with electric ranges, as they are pretty rare in Japan, but it does the trick. I don't recommend using the included steel pick, as it will scratch your pan and conduct heat while doing the flipping.

This handy little device will save you hours of work if you like to make apple pies! It is very easy to work, easy to clean, and you can get 10-12 apples peeled, cored, and sliced in less than five minutes. You can also use it to peel potatoes, although I use mine just for apples. Trust me, it is awesome. The only bummer is that big genetically modified apples do not work, so get the bagged little ones. It is also a learning curve as to how to position the apples. But if you love to make apple pies, you will LOVE this!

On the Good Eats episode on milk and milk products, Alton Brown sliced vanilla beans with this product and dropped the four parts into the heated milk for the topping on the Tres Leches Cake. Having struggled with shriveled vanilla bean pods, I am very thankful for the recommendation.

Granted, fresh green beans are delicious, but sometimes can be a little tough. By turning them into slivers, they become much less chewy, and are then known as French Cut green beans. Now you can slice them just so, with this convenient contraption.

Norpro Large No Post Stainless Steel Vegetable Steamer Review

Norpro Large No Post Stainless Steel Vegetable Steamer
Average Reviews:

This steamer insert is too large to use in smaller pots, so be sure to measure and make sure your pot is at least 7" wide on the inside. The feet won't scratch your pot, and removing the cooked vegetables is much easier without the center post common to cheaper steamers. With this one, I can just use a large spoon to scoop out the items, or if I want I can hoist the entire steamer out of the pan by grabbing the rings on the sides, but that's pretty tricky when it's fully of steaming veggies.

The three pronged base provides stability equal to those with center posts, so instead of one central handle there are two ring style side handles. The side handles supports the basket's shape, rather than allowing it to open flat upon lifting.Capacity for more to steam.Segments fold inward for compact storage

I bought this recently, and was very disappointed with the quality. The workmanship was poor (the metal was uneven) and the rolled edges had small burrs that can catch on your fingers. I am a big fan of stainless steel products, but I would not recommend Norpro in the future.
To make matters worse, when I returned it, the price of return shipping was deducted from the price of the item, so I got burnt twice.

Norpro Stainless Steel Vertical Roaster, With Infuser Review

Norpro Stainless Steel Vertical Roaster, With Infuser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
They did a comparison of many types and styles of roaters on America's Test Kitchens, and came down to two decisions: The best way to roast a chicken is vertically, and this product beat out much more expensive roasters as their favorite.
They suggested the following, which works perfectly even without using the infuser: Place roaster in a roasting pan to catch the drippings. Make some slits in the skin, then oil, season and bake bird at 325 until it reaches a temp of 140 deg in the breast meat. Take it out for a few minutes, raise the temp to 500 deg, and add a cup and a half of water to the drippings in the bottom of the pan. This keeps them from burning and smoking in the hotter oven. Next, cook for maybe 20 min more until you hit an internal temp or 160. This gets the outside super crispy. You then glaze that sucker with your favorite glaze, bake just another five minutes, then take it out and let it cool a bit. You can then use a separator to defat the watered down drippings and use it to make a quick gravy if you desire while the bird stands for a few minutes before slicing. It really does make the most evenly crispy roasted chicken I've ever seen without using a rotisserie.

Infuse your chicken with intriguing flavors using this vertical roaster. It will be the most flavorful and moist chicken you've ever had!Made of quality stainless steel, this roaster begins with a vertical roasting stand that attaches to a large, round drip tray (the stand collapses for easy storage). In the center of the drip tray sits a round dish with cone shaped top. Fill the round dish with herbs, spices, cider, juices or beer; as your chicken rests on the stand, the aromas and flavors from the liquids and herbs pass through the perforations on the cone shaped top, filling the cavity of the bird and adding moisture to the meat as it roasts. Instructions on using the vertical roaster are included.

Norpro Spaetzle Maker Review

Norpro Spaetzle Maker

A decade or so ago I toured through Europe and while in Germany I was introduced to Spaetzle. It was love at first bite. I live in a small town in California and spaetzle is not easy to come by. I bought an instant package of spaetzle, and followed the directions (pour contents of box into boiling water...) and it was terrible. Finally I decided to shop around for a Spaetzle maker and the only one I could find cost a fortune and was incredibly big and awkward, I imagined scraping my knuckles off and gave up my dreams of having fresh spaetzle. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found this simple spaetzle maker here on Amazon.com and at such a friendly price. I ordered it right before the holidays and it arrived in time for Christmas dinner. We eat our Christmas feast early in the afternoon and for a light dinner I love to make turkey soup from leftover Christmas turkey. For a twist I decided to add some fresh spaetzle and it was a wonderful success. The maker came with two simple recipes and after a couple attempts, I mastered the spaetzle maker. Since then we eat spaetle often with gravy's, soups, and tons of other dishes. This is a great deal for such a wonderful tool that will inhance you meals.

Norpro Apple Mate 3 Review

Norpro Apple Mate 3
Average Reviews:

I'm sorry to say that the Applemate 3 was a great disappointment. I ordered it because it's supposed to be the most versatile of the apple peelers -- ostensibly it can do any combination of peeling, coring, and paring -- and I have to admit that the unit looks quite handsome and is sturdily made. But it simply did not work for me. I wanted something that would peel and core apples, and I couldn't make the Applemate peel efficiently, try as I did to adjust the blade. I experimented on four apples (two fairly hard, two soft), and each time the blade would begin peeling and then would just slide off and merely scrape the skin. I've seen apple peelers work before, and maybe it's something I was doing wrong; all I know is, this model behaved like a nifty-looking invention that isn't quite perfected yet.

Norpro Ice Pop Maker Review

Norpro Ice Pop Maker

This product is poorly designed. I am very sorry I bought it.
The metal top has slits of the precise dimensions of the popsicle sticks, but once the sticks are in liquid, they expand, of course, which makes them impossible to pull out of the lid!!!! The lid, in turn, contracts, squeezing the sticks even further, so to get them out, you have to strip the sticks through the metal holes. I am surprised that no leeway was built into this part of the product, and that the materials chosen, metal and wood, while nice and recyclable, were not more carefully evaluated for performance in changing temperatures. Perhaps the mold can be used without the lid, but then the sticks will fall over until the liquid freezes.

Norpro Cast Aluminum Tortilla Press Review

Norpro Cast Aluminum Tortilla Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll admit that at first I was a bit frustrated with making my tortillas. This quickly ended after I figured out a few things and my second batch was so much fun to make.
This is what I do:
1) Mix up the maza and keep it moist. I roll out the balls first.
2) Use 1 sheet of wax paper.
3) Fold the wax paper in half (I do this diagonally so that it fits)
4) Put the wax paper so that the open end is at the hinge side of the press and the folded part of the wax paper is at the handle side of the press. This will help in removing the tortillia.
5) Put your tortillia ball about 1 inch off center towards the hinge of the press and then fold over the wax paper and close the press. The maza being off center will keep it evenly pressed. If it is in the center it tends to get pushed forward too much and hangs off the press.
6) Open the press and run the wax paper with your hand a few times prior to peeling of the paper. This helps to break the bond. Turn the paper over and do the same thing to the other side. The tortillia now will fall out the paper very easily.
7) Since the paper peels off the tortilla from back to front, the tortillia will not rip. If the paper were the other way it tends to rip the tortillia as the handle side of my press makes the tortillia thinner there.
Hopefully this helps get you started. I love this press. Wish it were bigger though.

I was surprised to see a review saying they had problems with their donuts sticking to the pan. I haven't run into that at all. One of the things I love about this pan is how you don't need any oil. You do need to let them cool about 5-10 mins before removing. Maybe that's why your donuts are sticking?
I would buy two if I were buying again though, because who only makes 12 mini donuts at a time?

Norpro Meat Grinder, Mincer, and Pasta Maker Review

Norpro Meat Grinder, Mincer, and Pasta Maker
Average Reviews:

I like this grinder.
In the past I've owned the metal grinders that you have to clamp to a table and the electric kind with big motors that take up most of the space on the kitchen counter. They were so clumsy and a pain to clean that I seldom used either one. The electric one failed recently grinding peanuts!! and the old metal manual one got left behind in the last move so I decided to try this Nor-Pro despite it being made partly of plastic.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. You do have to assemble the blades correctly. My first project was meatballs -- it ground the meat(buffalo stew meat in this case), the onions, a little garlic, mint stems and leaves, and the dry bread all very nicely into the square bowl which is included with the grinder. I grind my own meat to avoid the fat and "parts" from supermarket hamburger. The coarse grind is just right for tacos or wonton filling. Cleanup was easy - I put the pieces in the square bowl, added some hot water and a squirt of detergent and it was all clean in a few minutes and ready to use for the next meal. The extra pieces fit into a small plastic ziplock bag along with the basic instructions so they are not likely to get separated or lost. The rectangular bowl is attractive enough and the right size to take to table to serve sushi or gyoza.
The plastic is nice sturdy plastic like that in Lego toys. You do need to have a smooth countertop for the suction to work to stabilize the base(it doesn't work on my butcher-block table). It looks nice sitting on the counter so there it stays and gets used a lot. I only use my blender for smoothies nowadays. Nuts and beans and all sorts of other foods get ground in this little grinder.
One needs to make sure the pasta dough is not too moist... it takes a little practice.
The vegetables and cooked meats typically used for sandwich salads grind very nicely - even celery. So it is great when preparing lunches for brown bag or picnics. It also does a nice job of grinding garlic for garlic bread and/or salad dressing... saves my hands from smelling like garlic forever.
I'm left-handed and it is still easy for me to use.

Only two things could be adjusted for me to like this slicer better. 1 - the grooves could be deeper to keep from slicing into the wood. 2 - the guide could be adjustable. Other than that, it is a handy tool to use with baked bread. We use a bread machine that makes a pound and a half loaf. This has really removed the guess work of slicing. The bread should be cooled a little before attempting to slice. We often take bread to functions and using this we now have nice even slices. It is a lot neater using it rather than a plain board, too. All in all, a great kitchen aide.

I recently had gotten a Villaware Pasta set for my birthday. One of the main reasons was the ravioli press. What a disaster that was. then I thought hmm, I'll try this. what a delight. I made up about 130 ravioli yesterday. It works great. I would like to mention to make sure you liberally flour it before laying on the dough so they pop out quick.
