(More customer reviews)I purchased this coffee maker after too many days of being the family's late riser and finding the coffee pot already drained. I have been using this pot for a couple of months now, and I am more than pleased with my purchase. This pot does hold more than the standard 10- or 12-cup coffeemaker, a great feature in a family of coffee-drinkers.
I had hoped to find a coffee-maker with a removable water reservoir to carry back and forth to the sink, which this model does not have, but even so, I give this model five stars for the excellent coffee it makes. While I have to lift the coffee-maker down from the shelf on which I keep it in order to fill the reservoir, its internal clock remains accurate even when unplugged for the short while it takes to fill the reservoir.
Some folks here have complained about the beep signaling that the element is being turned off. Even after several cups of coffee, my nerves aren't so high-strung that I even give the sound a second thought. It's quite innocuous, IMHO.
Perhaps owing to the water filter, this pot makes excellent rich-tasting coffee. It seems to brew just long enough to make perfect coffee for most folks' tastes. For stronger coffee, I can make fewer cups and use more ground coffee. If I'm really in need of a strong cuppa, I'll simply use my French press. I have never had the ground coffee overflow the filter doing this. Also, the heating element seems set to the perfect temperature, since I have never had a cup of coffee from this pot that tasted burnt...and on a number of mornings, I have barely gotten up in time to hear the beep signaling the end of hot coffee.
Best features of this machine--absolutely drip-free pot, unrivaled pure coffee taste, large capacity pot, variable settings for when the heating element will turn off, and an internal clock that retains settings with short interruptions of power.
Improvements that could be made--I wish it had a removable reservoir, but the one pot that I have used that had that feature made the worst coffee I've ever made at home, not to mention the leaky pot.
If you're not looking for espresso, but just a clean, pure cup of good coffee...even when "Early Bird" isn't your middle name, I think you've found what you're looking for in this machine.

Big City Slider Station Review

(More customer reviews)I thought this was exactly as it was described. It easily makes sliders (LITTLE hamburgers). I found it to be easy and fun to use and easy to clean. It does take longer than 2 minutes to finish cooking on an electric coil stove (about 5 - 6 min.) If you check it and it's not done, just replace the top and wait another minute or two. There is no need to try to flip them. I followed the included instructions for cleaning and had no problems, and found it unexpectedly easy. The sliders are cooked (not flame-broiled) and taste accordingly. My kids love them because they have no hard dry edges. I was pleased with the size of the burgers (fits great on half a hot dog bun) and with the size of the pan (easy to store). I'm happy!

Taylor 7009 Electronic Lithium Scale Review

(More customer reviews)I have owned this scale for about a week. First of all, the manual is well written, simple, and accurate. Both my mother and I use the scale and have found it to be accurate as compared to our old analog scale. To be honest, our old scale gave varying readings of 1 and 2 pound differences with each repeated weighing at 1-minute intervals. The Taylor 7009 gave consistent readings under the same test everytime except once where the pound difference was up by 0.5.
The scale is relatively small, neat, and gorgeous with its black and silver finish. It has quite a slim profile, and it does feel solid and seems durable, but only time will tell if it is durable. The display is large and the numbers are very easy to read. On the topic of the display, it must be noted that the scale gives a reading within 3 to 4 seconds of standing on it, and it dutifully turns itself off after a few seconds. (I believe this is why the battery would be able to last a lifetime as the manufacturer promises).
It is very sensitive, so it is advisable that once you stand on it, remain as still as possible, because too much movement will result in an Error message on the display. This is easily resolved by stepping off and then on the scale again.
In short, this is a beautifully made scale which functions the way it should - accurately.

Bodum New Brazil 1 1/2-Cup French Press Coffee Maker Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this French Press a few weeks ago, partly because I can't resist anything small and cute :) Seriously though, I'd been using a larger one from a popular swedish furniture store for about a year. But I only made half a caraffe full, so this one seemed like a good idea. I make one cup of coffee at a time (I'm the only coffee drinker) and this makes a perfect amount for one large mug plus a little milk. It's not 3 servings, but generally one "cup" of coffee is understood to be 4 or 6 ounces, not an actual 8 ounce cup.
I can feel the quality difference between this one and my $15 press from the aforementioned furniture store. Easy to clean, cute, and makes great coffee :) Perfect for me!

Benriner Japanese Mandoline Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent slicer. I've used everything in it from carrots (when making my carrot version of thai papaya salad) julienned into matchstick thickness to wide thin slices of Korean radish. Never failed me.
Two drawbacks though:
1. The safety guard is a joke. It doesn't hold the veggies very well and is a pain to use effectively...which means I usually don't use it. I've cut my fingers on this mandolin twice now, which isn't bad for two years of regular useage, but I don't like the sight of blood so I'll leave it as a major detractor. Luckily for me, I cut myself on the julienne part and not the actual wide slicer. In other words, my finger meat was left shredded but intact. Whew!
2. The metal parts rust. Yep. They rust. Hence the reason I am now shopping around for another slicer. Don't know yet if I'll get another Benriner. Might look into the Bohn.
***Update***
Apparently Benriner realized the metal parts rusted because their mandolins now come with plastic screws to hold the julienne blades in place and to adjust the thickness level.

Moody Pet Fling-ama-string Cat Toy Review

(More customer reviews)My cats loved playing with this toy. Then, after a long period of supervised play, I turned the unit off and stowed the string according to the instructions on the box. However, a short time later, my cat figured-out how to pull the string from behind the rear side of the elastic band to which it is attached. She had managed to swallow most of the string, which is about 16"-18" long. Luckily, I was home, noticed what was happening and intervened by pulling over 12" of swallowed string from the mouth of my cat!
Of course, I immediately removed the toy from the door knob, studied the unit more carefully to understand how this had happened, then finally repackaged it in the box, putting it where my cats couldn't get to it.
In my opinion, there is a design flaw in the unit. Simply shutting off the toy with the string behind the back side of the belt is not enough (obviously) to prevent a cat from finding the string and then swallowing it. If the design were modified to place a solid plastic wall between the front side and back side of the belt, attaching the plastic to the sides of the belt housing, then the string couldn't be pulled back out by a curious cat.
In an effort to help improve safety and potentially to save a cat's life, as well as to help the manufacturer of an otherwise nice toy, I later called the manufacturer to advise her of what had happened and to present my suggestion.
The call was answered by a machine stating no one was available to take my call. But as I was leaving the message, a woman picked up the phone (sounding like I had woken her up. The call was placed at 10am EST on a Tuesday).
I began to tell her why I had called. Instead of sounding concerned, being willing to listen, or even apologizing, I was interrupted and told to "just wrap the string around the door knob - no cat could unwrap it." I disagreed, as I've seen cats do things no one thought they could do. In fact one of my cats does so on a regular basis.
She insisted that there was no reason to redesign the product, when people could just wrap the string around the door knob. Next, she tried to assign blame to me, telling me that the cat was supposed to be supervised when playing with the toy. (Again, my cats were being supervised while the toy was on. It was only when I had shut the toy off and stowed it according to the instructions that my cat was able to get at the string anyway and swallow it.)
Next, the woman suggested that my IQ was not as high as hers, insisting there was no need to change the design and again saying she had quickly figured out (after a couple other people had called mirroring my concerns) that all you have to do is wrap the string around the door knob.
Finally, to top off this somewhat less than desirable "customer service" experience - throughout the conversation, the woman repeatedly (no less than 3 times) stated "you can't please all customers." She's right!
Because, she didn't even try. All I wanted was for her to listen to my concern (it wasn't even a complaint) and to allow me to make a suggestion to improve safety (which, she could have thanked me for and then done nothing with, if that's what she chose.)
So, the bottom line and my reason for this review...I feel responsible to warn potential customers (since my phone call led me to believe that the manufacturer won't). In my opinion, the instructions on the box are insufficient to protect your cat. If you have one of these toys or decide to purchase one, I highly recommend that you remove it from the door knob after each use and put it away, where your cat can not get to it.
However, given that recommendation and the level of supervision required while the cats are playing with the toy, you might just want to save the money and pick-up an old-fashioned string.

Vicks Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Review

I have two of these humidifiers.
Pros:
1. High mist output - very clearly visible. It's like a fog machine! 'WOW!'
2. Mist volume control - many mist levels
3. Large water tank (20 hours of operation)
4. Direction control
5. Comes with it's own filter - but if you use distilled water you won't need to use the filter.
It's not silent but it is NOT loud by any means. I can sleep uninterrupted with it. My older humidifier produces the same noise level but my older humidifier produces a different frequency which disturbs my sleep. The Vick's is far superior to my old one.
Cons:
Like any humidifiers - you must keep it clean.
You have to keep the sonic agitator clean and free of dust/lint. A small bit of lint will negatively impact it's ability to produce high levels of mist. You don't even have to see the lint or dust.
Keeping the agitator clean is easy, don't touch it with bare hands - I only have to use running tap water on the agitator and it's dust/link free and it works like new every time.

Cuisinart EasyPop Review

(More customer reviews)Well, I suppose it could have been worse if the thing had burned down the house, but I would still classify this machine as pure evil. It is especially evil because it bears the Cuisinart brand name, leading one to believe it is a quality machine. For the price, it certainly should be.
I am not inept, generally speaking, but this "Easy-Pop" popcorn maker is far more trouble than it is worth. It is difficult to line up the heating element prongs when you put it together. This would have been an easy design element to fix, just by having slots with wide openings that taper down as the element slides in, properly aligning it. Nope. You have to line it up just right, and the marks on the back--NOT THE FRONT WHERE YOU COULD SEE THEM--are difficult to see and line up.
So, I add the popcorn and oil and turn it on. Fifteen minutes later, it's still spinning, but I don't have any popcorn. I turn it off, readjust the handles and make sure it is latched, and turn it on again. Ten minutes later, no popcorn, and I've lost all interest by now. Still, I try a third time to see if it will even work. It finally pops the popcorn. When it is done popping, I turn it over, but because the bowl does not attach tightly to the base, I allow a gap to open and popcorn goes everywhere. While trying to get it rightd and back together, I slip and burn my finger on the very hot element. Who thought it was a good idea to have people flipping over a burning-hot burner with just two tiny handles to hold onto?
I just threw all that popcorn away, I was so frustrated. After the first disaster, I'm sure I could use it better the next time, if it will heat up. Why would they call this an "Easy-Pop" popcorn maker? That should be illegal. They should call it the Dangerous-And-Difficult-Popcorn-Maker-That-May-Or-May-Not-Work. After that experience, I just want to take it out to the driveway and run over it with my truck. And I still have to clean the stupid thing.
Worst product ever made.

mypressi TWIST Handheld Espresso Maker Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered my Twist last summer after reading a review of one on another site. Amazon had it on sale for $99 instead of the regular $150 so I snatched it up. I have a feeling they were on sale to get rid of the old models in stock. After I bought mine I saw the design had changed a bit. The new models now had indicators on the top to show how many shots of coffee you made to help keep track of how much gas was left in the cartridge. I had a problem with mine after a couple weeks. As soon as I put a new gas cartridge in, all the air would immediately blow out. I contacted the company and they had me ship it back to them. In about a week they sent me a brand new unit that was also the new design and I haven't had a problem with it since. Great customer service. I'm new to espresso making so I'm still experimenting. I bought a Gaggia bean grinder to go with it and I've been making some pretty good shots of espresso lately. I've also tried heating up different alcohols to run through the unit and I've had some good luck making a shot of espresso with Grand Marnier instead of water. It's a great little gadget for those who love coffee.

I don't understand why people are rating this so negative! I received one for Christmas from a family friend and have had no troubles with it. I wiped it down as instructed before using, sprayed a little Pam for baking on it, added the batter and BOOM! wonderful mini banana nut muffins my first go around. I thought it was too good to be true so I made another batch with chocolate chips - the nonstick was awesome! No residual chocolate left in the little molds and they came out perfectly.
I haven't heard or read anything negative about them until I came across it here. Like with all electronics such as this there runs a risk of overheating and electrical issues ( I had one with a foreman grill and yet they're still huge sellers) but I haven't read too much about this machine. I had it plugged in for a good 2 hours and no problems at all. I would recommend this to everyone.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this coffee maker around Christmas and was a little concerned over the prior reviews that stated it uses too much coffee. The chemist in me had to do the experiment.
A standard issue coffee from Starbucks was ground to a standard medium grind for coffee makers of this type. The coffee was measured on a 1 gram precision scale according to the specification on the Starbucks coffee bag (2Tbs per 6oz cup) to make 6 cups of coffee. The coffee grinds weighed to be 54 grams. The same coffee beans from the same bag were ground in the coffee maker set to 6 cups and strong. The coffee grinds were then measured on the same scale and wouldn't you know...it was exactly 54 grams.
For my coffee beans this machine on the 6 cup setting produced the following:
Strong = 9 grams (2Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
Medium = 8 grams (about - 1 3/4Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
Mild = 7 grams (about - 1 1/2Tbs) of coffee per cup of water
I can't imagine that one couldn't find a setting to their liking when you consider you have increments of 2 cups with 3 settings (strong, medium and mild) each.
