Northern Industrial Tools Deluxe French Fry Cutter Review

Northern Industrial Tools Deluxe French Fry Cutter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked all over the web for a French Fry cutter and found nothing but cheap junk that could not accommodate a whole potato. Not only that but every review I saw said that the fry cutter broke, bent, or was rendered useless before 5 potatoes had been sliced.
Then I found the Northern Industrial Tools DeLuxe fry cutter. It looked impressive and sounded as if it could do the job with more damage to the potato than the cutter. As it turns out, that is an understatement.
This commercial tool is a monster. It is larger and much heavier than I would have guessed. It is made from heavy cast aluminum with steel nuts and bolts, and steel cutter blades. The guide bars even have plastic slider bushings for quiet and smooth operation. If you were to drop this thing onto concrete, I would be willing to bet that the concrete would fare worse than this tool. It weighs 8 pounds and is an industrial grade tool. I cannot imagine how this thing showed up broken as in the other review. I had to tighten a couple of bolts, and mount it to the wall, but I cannot fathom how this item was broken in transit.
This fry cutter will EASILY accept a 6 inch (and larger) potato. This beast makes short work of twenty full size russet potatoes (sold individually as baking potatoes in the supermarket). The long lever arm requires a long pull to get the job done, but the leverage you generate to cut through the spuds (with skins on) in a single pull is impressive and makes the task relatively easy.
The cutter ships with two blades, one for 3/8 inch square, and one for 1/2 inch square. The "pusher block" and cutter blade assemblies must be swapped out to change between sizes. This is done by removing wing nuts to pull out the cutter blade assembly, removing machine screws that hold the "pusher block", and installing the other blades and pusher. It was never built for quickly changing sizes. It will take a few minutes and some basic hand tools.
I would have given 5 stars if the cutter were easier to mount and/or clean.
This industrial tool must be mounted to a wall with four screws (not included) to make it stable and safe to operate. My guess is that this unit was designed to be mounted directly above a fryer so as the potatoes are sliced they fall into the hot grease along with potato juice.
When you cut a spud, the juice sprays a little bit, and the frame, slides, guide, and cutter blades get pretty much covered with sticky, starchy goo. If you are outdoors or in an industrial kitchen, you could just spray the unit down with a hose to clean it. In a home kitchen, a spray down is impractical. This is the reason I gave this cutter only 4 stars.
Each of the holes to mount this beast to the wall is just that, a hole. To really clean the cutter, you need to completely remove each and every one of the mounting screws from the wall. If all of the holes were counter bored slots, designed to quickly mount and un-mount the cutter, I would have gladly given this monster 5 stars.
If you buy this you will never buy another fry cutter. But be forewarned that it takes no small effort to swap cutter size, likewise to mount and clean this industrial grade kitchen tool in a residential kitchen.
BTW, the BEST fries are made by blanching at 325F for 6-8 minutes, then remove them from the oil. Crank up the grease to 375F and dunk them in small batches for 2 minutes to brown them up. Heaven on Earth.

Chef'n VeggiChop Vegetable Chopper, Arugula Review

Chef'n VeggiChop Vegetable Chopper, Arugula
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the VeggiChop because I'm trying to cook from scratch more instead of buying pre-chopped mire poix from Trader Joe's or frozen chopped veggies for soups & stews.
I have a certain breaking point, where a whole lotta chopping becomes... well, demotivating, and the soup just doesn't get made (pizza, anyone?).
I also have a TINY kitchen and an electric, full size food processor is simply out of the question.
The VeggiChop brings enough variation and novelty to the chopping process to keep me on task in the kitchen. I'm using a lot more fresh vegetables in my cooking now, saving money, and enjoying the work!
Some notes...
You'll still have to clean & cut the veggies (I've tried onions, celery, bell peppers, carrots, and shallots) into chunks before they go into the bowl. And if you're doing a stock pot of soup, you'll be doing a couple of rounds of each of the major ingredients.
And the chop isn't as even or "pretty" as a good knife chop or even a food processor chop. So if it's food for a party and you want a perfect dice of red bell peppers for garnish, get out your knife.
Also, I haven't had much luck with herbs or garlic. They stick to the blades and don't really get minced, even with the little paddle attachment that's supposed to help with that. I bought a garlic twist NexTrend Garlic Twist - Clear for the garlic, and use a knife for the herbs.
And although it says somewhere in the product info online that you can chop ice with this thing... meh. Not really. Or I couldn't... Maybe if you started with those tiny hotel cubes?
However, you CAN make fruit sorbets with the thing. Mark Bittman had a recipe in the NY Times recently for simple fruit sorbets, and if you let the frozen fruit thaw slightly first, you can make a nice two serving batch very easily with the VeggiChop.
What else: Oh. Easy to clean, just be careful with the blade.
Hope that helps!

Chef'n Garlic Zoom Review

Chef'n Garlic Zoom

This little device is almost perfect. It's fun to use, and you control the size of chopped garlic you need. (If you're a serious chef and can mince garlic behind your back with your eyes shut, you probably don't need this device.)
The minor drawback is the clean up. There are two components to this little zoom; the garlic compartment and the rotating blade. You need to be careful not to hurt yourself when separating the two and removing your garlic. But, if you're patient in the kitchen (and not accident prone), that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the super cool zoom, Chef'n!

I love this product. I have only used it once so far to make bruschetta. It chopped the tomatoes very quickly but did not puree them. It even chopped up the parsley very nicely. I can't wait to use it to make salsa. The chopper also came with a ton of other great kitchen tools. It has a grater, a slicer, an egg white separator, and so much more. This product is well worth the money.

Onion Chopper The Quick, Safe and Simple Way to Chop up Your Fruits and Vegetables.

I have only used it once and it broke (made out of cheap plastic)! It for sure is a "one time use only" and the way it is shown on TV is not the way you really use it, not so smoothly - I think they have used an already chopped onion. I would say it is better for soft vegetables such as tomatoes (which also is very messy because of the juice). It was just a waste of money. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This handy Onion Chopper lets you quickly and easily chop onions without crying. It also keeps your hands odor free. Simply place an onion on the stainless steel slicing grid, then push down the lid to chop in one quick motion. The chopped onion will fall into the see-through plastic container that reduces odors to prevent tears while keeping your counter clean. It also has measurements on the side so you can clearly see how much you've chopped - up to 2 cups. Dishwasher safe.

Bought this. First time out of box, couldn't even cut an onion. I had the correct holding plate and blade installed correct side up. Quartered a normal yellow onion, and the machine crushed it instead of cutting it. I could get it to work with the larger grate if I literally put all my body weight on top of it. Piece of junk. I will be returning it.

Ninja Master Prep Professional Blender, Chopper and Ice Crusher: More Power & 2 Times Faster & Recipe Book Included Review

Ninja Master Prep Professional Blender, Chopper and Ice Crusher: More Power and 2 Times Faster and Recipe Book Included
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are two serious issues with this item which minimizes it's value.
First, the power is only 450 watts, which is about the same as the normal household blender. The people who have been writing these positive reviews - reviews upon which I relied when I bought this thing - seem like they have never heard of a blender or food processor. The bottom line with regards to power is indisputable - this is the same wattage as a weak blender. Regardless of what people are saying, bear this in mind - no more power than a blender. That's the biggest problem.
Second, the position of the blades relative to the size of the containers does not crush ice into snow as stated (unless you are willing to continually remove the motor and lid, and reposition the ice and/or the contents) and does not chop veggies or anything else evenly.
I tried to crush ice into snow. After repositioning the contents 4 times, I still had chunks of ice (the ice I started with was already crushed ice from our freezer dispenser). So yes, you'll get some snow. But you'll also get so many chunks of ice that it makes this thing useless relative to a blender. When I chopped veggies, the size difference was annoying. Any attempt to more finely chop the larger pieces liquified the smaller pieces.
Here's the thing. If you want to truly crush ice into snow, you need a professional blender (as you see in coffee shops or smoothie outlets). Amazon carries them, they operate on 1000 watts, and cost $200. The base motor (with blade) has to be wider than traditional blenders and the container wider throughout. The idea of 2 or 3 tiers of blades does not help in this regard.
If you want to chop veggies, you need a good food processor where the blades are proportionate to the container. These blades are far too spread apart to chop evenly.
One more thing. This product comes with 3 separate containers for different purposes. You'll need 2-3x the storage space of an ordinary blender.
The Amazon ad says that this lists for $69.95 (as of today). I paid $59.95 at Kohls and had a 30% off coupon. I also had $10 of Kohls cash that I used. That means my cost was about $32 before tax.
And I'm still taking it back.
Beware of some of these reviews. I mean, I have yet to read reviews that were so hyped up. I have to wonder about the origin. Just use common sense and if you still wat to try it, make sure you save the box and receipt.

When i went to use the Mixxo for the first time, I was not sure how I would like it. I have had hand mixers before and they never live up to their hype. I know BOSCH makes quality products so I decided to give this a try. The first thing I attempted to make with my new Mixxo was a smoothie. I read that the foot can crush ice, so I figured that it would be able to blend up frozen fruit. I used the blender jug attachment piece and added my ingredients, I then attached the foot and turned the Mixxo on. In order to activate the Mixxo you have to hold down two buttons and then release one, this is a safety feature, but it was a little bothersome at first because i was not familiar with the machine. After a few minutes I was able to get the hang of things and the smoothies turned out great. I even added extra ice at the end and the Mixxo was able to crush the ice with no problem. On my second attempt to use the Mixxo I used the food processor attachment. This was really neat. The base of the processor has suction cups which help keep it in place on the counter. I found it very simple to hook up because the hand piece hooks on the the top of the processor. I was also very pleased with how quiet it is. I was able to talk with other people in my kitchen when I was using the Mixxo. Additionally it fits perfectly on my counter and all of the pieces except the hand piece can go in the dishwasher. It was very easy to cleanup after I was done using it. I am very satisfied with my purchase and I would recommend this hand mixer to anyone. The Mixxo exceeded my expectations. Once again BOSCH has delivered. It would also make a great wedding present or house warming gift.
***Update***I've been using this as a mini food processor and potato masher a lot over the past 2 years! It's still strong and works well.
It chops onions (with no eye pain) and peppers evenly.
It easily granulates and mixes spices, rubs and breading mixes.
It can make smooth or chunky mashed potatoes in an instant.
I love this thing and will continue using it every day until it wears out.

Cordless for maximum flexibility in the kitchen, this handheld immersion blender works great for blending batters, pureeing soup, making milkshakes, and more. A 24-ounce blender jug with measuring marks and a secure-fitting lid comes included--great for blending and storing all in one container. The kitchen tool also provides a mixing container with a chopping blade. Simply detach the stainless-steel blender foot and attach the chopper for dicing onions and green peppers or mincing herbs. The unit not only delivers sufficient power for mixing and blending, it can also crush ice and supply constant power for up to 20 minutes. Even more, the cordless handheld immersion blender and chopper features a revolutionary design detail--it's the first in the world to be powered by Lithium ion batteries. Its lightweight and long-lasting re-chargeable lithium ion battery produces exceptional power, plus it remains relatively unaffected when left plugged in after a full charge, where other batteries often become compromised or weakened. The blender foot, blender jug, and lid clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. The immersion handheld blender measures 2-1/2 by 2-1/2 by 15-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter Review

Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter
Average Reviews:

The product itself get 5 stars for ease and functionality and 4 stars for a cleaning problem and lack of accessories.
In the package are 2 different sized blade grates and push blocks that are easily assembled and removed from the main body by depressing a small lever and turning a latch, respectively. Cutting capacity is less than 4 inches in length. You'll have to "cut" large Russets before "cutting!"
Clean-up is mostly easy, if you have a baby bottle nipple brush to poke through the grate holes and cross brush the push blocks (a toothbrush for the latter works also). However, the main body has slots where the push block slides. This area collects and traps small potato fragments and is difficult to clean.
I would like to see different shaped blade grates, just for the heck of it. You never know what strange moods you will be in!? I would enjoy a larger capacity in the main body, but this would cause more strength to cut the potatoes. Right now, there's a good compromise between capacity and cutting effort.
Don't forget to double fry your potatoes: about 2-3 minutes at 325F, pat dry, then about 5 minutes or golden brown at 375F.
You can check the cooking sites for variations.

Average Reviews:

I purchased the V-Slicer over ten years ago and it has been a faithful companion in the kitchen. The speed with which it slices/dices onions makes it more than worth the price. You can make french fries or julienne fries, onion rings, scalloped potatoes, carrot or celery sticks...the list is endless! Cleanup is no more than a rinse under water. The safety holder ensures that you won't be suffering any mishaps. But for safety's sake, keep this appliance away from the kids. The blades are VERY SHARP and can deliver a nasty cut if you don't handle them carefully. For that reason, I never wash them in the sink where suds can hide them and risk injury. But these warnings aside, this is a wonderful and versatile tool. It is as useful as a mandoline at a fraction of the price. You will reach for it often and the V-Slicer will be one of your favorite and most used kitchen tools.

I have really enjoyed using this product. I need to have easy-to-eat foods, so I started using blenders and a food processor to puree meals. What a pain, and the clean-up!! Don't get me started. This Cuisinart has saved the day. I fill it with the food I want to puree, add the liquid (needs more than you think) and then pulse. First on low, then high. I may take it off an shake it, and then run a bit more, occasionally I will run without pulsing for 30 secs. or so. Its fast!! It makes a smooth puree, better than my blender, better than my food processor and much quicker. Then I put the black top on the cup and viola, ready to eat. No other dishes needed. The clean up is easy -- just rinse the blade and put the top and cup in the dishwasher. There are plenty of cups and tops, so if I want to make another flavor or a side, I use another cup. This has been indispensable for me to eat regular food--the same food I make for my family, pureed. When I want hot items, I can put the cup in the microwave before or after blending, which makes it so much easier than a blender. For my needs this is perfect. I haven't used the grinding blade yet.
I'm having fun making great puree recipes...so much so, I'm thinking I should publish a book on them, or at least share with friends who are recovering and need easy to digest foods, or easy to eat foods.

I highly recommend the Cuisinart Mini-Prep. I've had one for 6 years and it is still running beautifully. For such a small unit it has a surprisingly powerful motor. It can chop or puree vegies, fruits, - even cooked beef, chicken, and fish. When I first bought it I used it mainly for chopping onions, garlic, herbs, etc., but then I began to discover the possibilities. Ofcourse, the portions you are able to prepare are small, but if you're alone or have a very small family, it's a great little machine. Also a breeze to clean (not like the large Cuisinart units). Only negative is that it is rather noisy, however, for this price it is a terrific value. I must add that I bought two other mini processors prior to this one (both by Black & Decker) and was thoroughly dissatisfied with them. The motors were not powerful at all and the blades were in a different position than Cuisinart Mini-Prep. They could not chop more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food at a time or it would not run. Neither unit would puree anything, only coarse chopping was possible. If you're looking for a good mini processor the Cuisinart Mini-Prep is it!
