Hamburger Patty Maker Review

Hamburger Patty Maker

This works well. I think it is mostly designed for a resteraunt, but I use it at home. It does seem to work best if you put a paper on top and bottom of machine befor pressing. My only wish is that it made a slightly thicker patty. You can do this by not squeezing the meat so much, but would like a deeper patty mold. The clean up is easy and the product is quality made.

This patty maker is an excellent choice for low volume, cost conscious food service operations. Made of heavy cast aluminum with a baked enamel finish. It comes complete with cloth liner and two interchangeable patty molds (5 1/4" diameter). One mold is slightly deeper than the other. (4-5 patties per pound of meat or 6-9 patties per pound of meat.) Holds up to 100 sheets of wax paper (not included). The patty maker is 12" in length and round 5" tall with handle down, 15" when handle is open. Use in Six Easy Steps: 1. Place machine on table or counter and lift arm. 2. Load Patty paper onto metal posts. 3. Place ball of ground meat on patty paper. 4. Position liner on top of ball ground meat. 5. Press down on mold handle. 6. Lift up handle; liner ejects patty as you pull up. In stock and ready to ship. Features: Can be mounted to counter with screws. Change liners as required. Ejector mechanism is adjustable with set screw in handle. Metal posts hold 100 sheets. Mold plates are interchangeable.

Chef'n VeggiChop Vegetable Chopper, Arugula Review

Chef'n VeggiChop Vegetable Chopper, Arugula
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the VeggiChop because I'm trying to cook from scratch more instead of buying pre-chopped mire poix from Trader Joe's or frozen chopped veggies for soups & stews.
I have a certain breaking point, where a whole lotta chopping becomes... well, demotivating, and the soup just doesn't get made (pizza, anyone?).
I also have a TINY kitchen and an electric, full size food processor is simply out of the question.
The VeggiChop brings enough variation and novelty to the chopping process to keep me on task in the kitchen. I'm using a lot more fresh vegetables in my cooking now, saving money, and enjoying the work!
Some notes...
You'll still have to clean & cut the veggies (I've tried onions, celery, bell peppers, carrots, and shallots) into chunks before they go into the bowl. And if you're doing a stock pot of soup, you'll be doing a couple of rounds of each of the major ingredients.
And the chop isn't as even or "pretty" as a good knife chop or even a food processor chop. So if it's food for a party and you want a perfect dice of red bell peppers for garnish, get out your knife.
Also, I haven't had much luck with herbs or garlic. They stick to the blades and don't really get minced, even with the little paddle attachment that's supposed to help with that. I bought a garlic twist NexTrend Garlic Twist - Clear for the garlic, and use a knife for the herbs.
And although it says somewhere in the product info online that you can chop ice with this thing... meh. Not really. Or I couldn't... Maybe if you started with those tiny hotel cubes?
However, you CAN make fruit sorbets with the thing. Mark Bittman had a recipe in the NY Times recently for simple fruit sorbets, and if you let the frozen fruit thaw slightly first, you can make a nice two serving batch very easily with the VeggiChop.
What else: Oh. Easy to clean, just be careful with the blade.
Hope that helps!

Onion Chopper The Quick, Safe and Simple Way to Chop up Your Fruits and Vegetables. Review

Onion Chopper The Quick, Safe and Simple Way to Chop up Your Fruits and Vegetables.

I have only used it once and it broke (made out of cheap plastic)! It for sure is a "one time use only" and the way it is shown on TV is not the way you really use it, not so smoothly - I think they have used an already chopped onion. I would say it is better for soft vegetables such as tomatoes (which also is very messy because of the juice). It was just a waste of money. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

This handy Onion Chopper lets you quickly and easily chop onions without crying. It also keeps your hands odor free. Simply place an onion on the stainless steel slicing grid, then push down the lid to chop in one quick motion. The chopped onion will fall into the see-through plastic container that reduces odors to prevent tears while keeping your counter clean. It also has measurements on the side so you can clearly see how much you've chopped - up to 2 cups. Dishwasher safe.

If you are anything like me you have probably bought your share of gadgets around the house that seemed like a 'must have' when you bought it ... then seemed like an 'i'ts Ok' when you firts used it and then into the junk drawer ... never to be ssen again until you move.
Well, if you like mashed potatoes then this is a MUST HAVE little and trust me you'lll use it over and over. (Darned if I know why they call it a ricer since it has diddly to do with rice. I mean we alll KNOW that potatoes hate rice anyway)
For us semi professional cooks you know that potatoes when boiled in their skins not only maintain their nutrients, but also, most importantly the flavour! In the past that has meant peeling hot potatoes which was never much fun. With this machine however you just dump the potato into the bowl and squeeze, voila ..... the potato comes out the bottom and the skin stays in the bowl ... I don't know how to explain it but the closest I'll come to is to say it's MAGIC.
You can usually do like 3 potatoes and then just pop open the ricer, scrape away the boiled potato skin and continue ...
no fuss no musss no burned hands no cutting and mashing just perfect fresh flavourfull mashed potatoes to add butter, garlic, cheeese or whatever else turns you on ...
OK potato lovers buy this baby now you will NOT regret it ....

If you've watched a few cooking shows you've probably seen one of these in action. Many professional chefs swear by this method of ricing rather than mashing potatoes. This is an excellent device for straining tomatoes and fruits as well-great for homemade baby food!

Bought this. First time out of box, couldn't even cut an onion. I had the correct holding plate and blade installed correct side up. Quartered a normal yellow onion, and the machine crushed it instead of cutting it. I could get it to work with the larger grate if I literally put all my body weight on top of it. Piece of junk. I will be returning it.

Marcato Atlas Pasta Bike Review

Marcato Atlas Pasta Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I ordered this I couldn't wait to get it. I had been making all of my pasta by rolling out my dough, rolling it up and cutting with a knife or a pizza cutter for years! I thought the pasta bike was going to be more versatile than it turned out to be. The concept is great but it, first of all, only cuts your dough with a crinkled edge. You can remove some of the disks and make lasagna noodles but you cannot push the disks closer together to make something like fettuccine. The slimmest noodles are about 3/4 of an inch wide. Probably the biggest trouble I have with the pasta bike is that when I press down and roll it across my dough one of the ends almost always comes apart and I have to stop midstream, lift up the cutter and fit the end back on, and then try to place it back exactly where I was on the dough when it came apart and continue rolling. For the price I guess I expected something much more functional. It seems a little junky to me but I will continue to use it while I look for something better.

I saw this on QVC and thought it was a neat idea. So I mulled over it for a couple of weeks.
I decided to order it from Amazon - something about the free shipping and cheaper price that won me over. hahahahaha
It was on backorder at the time and I was surprised when it just showed up one day.
We love it. My hubby, who is always skeptical about my gadget purchases, was surprised when he used it. He thinks it's a neat idea - and the fact that it organizes everything by category on your list automatically is simply GENIUS!!!
Press the button say the item you need to add - it shows up - select it from a list of options and it adds it to the list. When you are ready to go shopping simply press print - and it prints out the list. Easy as that.....
No more sitting at the table trying to remember what you need - just add the items to the list as you can think of them. The list stays until you delete it.
Plus it even lists errands - another added bonus. Need to run to the bank, atm, cleaners, lawyer's office...
Another plus - is that you can add your own items, or errands, if they aren't listed.
If you have problems with it recognizing your voice or speech - you can TEACH IT to understand your diction. Talk about a HOT MESS!!1
As you can tell - I LOVE THIS THING!! Best gadget I have ever bought!!
Try it - you won't be disappointed!!!!

Demy Kitchen Safe Touchscreen Recipe Reader Review

Demy Kitchen Safe Touchscreen Recipe Reader
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been wanting to purchase this since way before it was released - I would go to the website and dream about all the cool ways to use it. So, when I was given some money and gift certificates for my birthday, I ordered the Demy right away.
It arrived yesterday, and having played with it for several hours (including adding recipes and "cookbooks"), I have several observations.
Pros:
1. Solid construction and intuitive use. The power button is on the bottom and is easy to spot. On either side of the power button are the sockets for the usb cable (included) and the charger (also included). They both have rubber covers that can be placed over the outlet when they are not being used to prevent food getting inside.
2. Able to change font size and brightness level. There are 3 settings for each, making it nice when you're looking at the screen around a big mixing bowl, etc. You can also change the time before the Demy dims and before it "sleeps".
3. The included "gadgetry" in the software. The conversion calculator, the 3 timers, the substitution list - all are terrific. And of course, the ability to put recipes in separate folders ("cookbooks").
4. The recipe input process is fairly painless. I'm a quick typist, so I chose to input my recipes myself rather than paying to have them scanned for me, and the area to input recipes is easy to use. It's a nice, clean interface and is also easy to copy-and-paste if there are favored recipes on other websites.
Cons:
1. The cookbooks that the Demy came pre-loaded (as well as the individual recipes) cannot be deleted *at this time*. I just spoke to someone in Customer Service, and apparently this option will not be available until mid-August at the earliest.
2. The cookbooks/recipes that are already on the Demy DO NOT show up on the recipe website. So for example, one of the pre-loaded cookbooks is "Beef and Pork". If you decide you like that cookbook and want to load a favorite beef recipe into that cookbook - it doesn't work because since they don't register on the website, there is no way to add them.
3. There is no way to add/delete recipes or cookbooks right on the Demy. A small issue, but one that would be tremendously nice to have. There is also no way to search by keywords, so if you're looking for a specific recipe that doesn't have one of the ingredients in the title, you're out of luck. The index only lists recipes alphabetically.
4. There is no way to delete cookbooks you add personally. That's right - if you add a cookbook and decide you want to delete it in favor of something else, it will delete on the website but NOT on the Demy. For example, when I realized that I couldn't access the Beef and Pork cookbook, I wondered if adding an identically titled cookbook would help by taking the place of the first one, allowing me to access it. Nope. I got two identically titled cookbooks - no big deal, until I realized after deleting it on the website that it will not come off the Demy.
5. While the Demy will "sleep" after whatever preset time you program, it will not turn off, so it still sucks battery power. To actually turn the machine off, you have to hold the power button in the back until it beeps. Of course, if your machine does turn off (battery dies, etc.), then when you power it back on, rather than going back to the recipe you were using, it takes you back to the home screen, leaving you to find your place again. Small issues, but ones that would be nice if they were fixed. It would be nice to have my original place come back first, particularly if I'm in the middle of a dish.
6. Another small complaint is the process for adding recipes to the website. I either have to type them all in myself, or pay something like 50 cents per recipe to the companion site to have them loaded to the website for me. So, if like many, I get this machine to store a lot of loose recipes, that's either a bunch of typing over a long period of time, or a fair amount of money. While I'm no software guru, I would think it would be possible to scan my own recipes in, rather than typing them all by hand. And for any recipes stored on my computer, like a photo program, the software could scan my computer and create a file to load.
Quite honestly, for the price of this item, most of these things should have been taken care of before it was released. I love the idea of the Demy, and would love to keep it, but the execution of the software leaves a lot to be desired and makes it much more clunky than helpful. I am honestly thinking hard about returning it until a later date when I know that these issues (or at least the big ones) will have been fixed.

Progressive International GMMC-68 Microwavable S'Mores Maker Review

I ordered this for my three kids. We love roasting smores on a campfire but do not get to do that too often. When I saw the low Amazon price, I had my doubts. I was still so excited to try this out. It came in and the kids and I tried it for dessert. It was just as easy as promised. It took only 30 seconds to cook the marshmallows evenly and perfectly. The chocolate doesn't really start melting until you take it out of the microwave which is good. It is less messy that way.
I could not recommend this enough. We use ours very regularly. I have already bought three more as Christmas gifts. Wonderful, simple, inexpensive. What more could you ask for? Go get your own!!

Enjoy delicious s'mores indoors with this easy-to-use contraption--no need to wait until summertime camping trips or gathering with friends around a bonfire at the beach. The nostalgia created with these sweet treats can now be savored any time of year and from the convenience of home. Simply fill the reservoir with water, assemble one or two s'mores on the tray by stacking a piece of chocolate and a marshmallow in between two graham-cracker squares, lower the arms to hold in place, and microwave for up to 30 seconds. The heated water allows the graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate to heat evenly, while the arms prevent the marshmallows from over expanding and overcooking, giving the chocolate time to melt. Be careful when removing the s'more maker from the microwave as the water is hot and can spill. The innovative unit creates consistently perfect s'mores--crisp graham crackers neatly holding together soft marshmallow and melted chocolate. A fun addition to sleep overs or birthday parties, the s'more maker measures approximately 7-1/2 by 6-1/2 by 4 inches and cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher.

Xpress Redi Set Go Cooker Review

Xpress Redi Set Go Cooker
Average Reviews:

I watched the infomercial for months. It seemed simple and Cathy Mitchell seemed believable. By the time the commercial ended...I was anxious to own one. My little George Foreman finally gave way and as a Christmas present to myself I purchased one. The first meal I tried was pork chops and potatoes. Cathy always made it simple. Popped in the food, set the timer for 7 to 12 minutes and out comes a delicious meal. The potatoes never cooked well at all. After 15 minutes, the edges were fine but the middle still hard so I popped in the microwave and finished. Pork chops were my next attempt. Never seared as there was too much juice. I kept pouring it off and finally browned a bit but I could have cooked faster on the stove. So okay, not good for meats and potatoes. Eggs should work. For breakfast, I tried an omelet and bacon. Bacon steamed and did not crispin. Omelet cooked for 12 minutes and still the center was not cooked well. So I tried a flat bread pizza with pesto and cheese. The bread did crispin but the cheese hardly melted in the center. Took longer than the 7 minutes on the commercial. Tried a grilled pastrami and cheese sandwich. The bread browned, nearly burnt in the 7 minutes, only the edges of the cheese melted. The center was still cold, but if I cooked longer, then the bread would have burnt. My little George Foreman cooked so much better. I felt I gave the Express RediSetGo a good try. I e-mailed and told customer service I wanted to return it. They said I could return it for a replacement as mine might be defective or I could get a full-refund. However, I lose the shipping charges no matter what and that was $16.95. After reading the review by another consumer, I will not use their express return tag included in the package. Instead, I will mail with my own label and pay for signed delivery confirmation. I am saddened it did not work as seen on television. I was really looking forward to fast and easy meals when I'm on the go.

Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer Review

Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a really good apple peeler. The blade is wider than in standard peelers (the red ones where you put the apple sideways) so it peels the apple faster. It peels around the top and bottom of the apple, missing only the parts right above and below the core, so after coring the apple there's no skin left--no touch-ups required. It comes with a corer, a corer/slicer, two extra blades, and little plastic covers for the blade and prongs. It's easy to clean.
The cons: It looks like it belongs in a toy chest, so if you pride yourself on your beautiful Martha Stewart kitchen you're going to want to put this away after using it rather than leave it displayed. It doesn't work well at all on potatoes--even when you cut them in half first, it still misses lots of spots and carves them into apple shapes. There are four plastic suction cups on its base to keep it from moving while you're using it, and you have to wet them to make them work. It only takes a few drops of water, though, and then they work fine.
I love mine and use it all the time. For me, the cons are outweighed by the usefulness of being able to peel, core, and slice an apple in seven seconds. I'll never go back to a sideways peeler.

Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker Review

Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker
Average Reviews:

Look...making yogurt isn't that compicated. All you need is a good starter culture, a stable and appropriate temperature and clean equipment so you get the proper cultures growing. The Salton 1-quart does a beautiful job and you can't beat the price. If you've never made your own yogurt before, this is the unit to buy. Don't spend tons of money on a piece of equipment that does nothing more than keep the milk warm for a few hours. Realize, it is much easier to just buy yogurt at the supermarket. But if you don't like keep buying little plastic containers, and if you don't mind going to just a little effort to make your own foods, you'll enjoy making yogurt. I like to use milk straight from the bulk tank at a local dairy farm and either organic Stonyfield (NH)or organic Butterworks (VT) yogurt as a starter. Homemade yogurt doesn't always have the homogenous and solid consistency of store-bought, but I've had very good results (quite comparable with commercial yogurts) with the Salton, plus I can use whatever flavorings I want from real maple syrup to my favorite jams. I even use the yogurt in place of sour cream. The possibilities with home-made yogurt are almost unlimited!

Yogourmet Multi Electric Yogurt Maker with Yogurt and CBA Starter Review

We ordered this one because we wanted to make a larger batch. The first two or three times we weren't totally satisfied - once we had a tub full of stinky mess. But if we use fresh starter (only a couple of tablespoons needed) and carefully sterilize the milk it comes out great. The incubation time isn't that sensitive, but if you don't heat the milk to 180 you may get slime.

Euro Cuisine 2qt Yogurt Maker - Electric Review

This works beautifully! Thanks to the large 2-quart capacity, now I can make enough yogurt to last a week and avoid using all of those store-bought plastic yogurt containers. Note: The recipe provided by Euro-Cuisine is not as good as the one from Diet for a Small Planet, which--doubled for the 2qt capacity--makes a delicious yogurt with a much thicker consistency.

Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210 Review

Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210

I am a firm believer that you need no special equipment to make yogurt. I have made yogurt many times using a double boiler and a styrofoam "beer cooler" as is available in various sizes at grocery and service stations every summer for about $4. (see my comments at the end)
However, if you want a maker "off the shelf" this is excellent. It has the following pluses:
* It's instructions actually allow effective production of decent yogurt without further ado or special "mixes" or extras.
* It's got the "high top" lid which allows fairly easy 92oz (3qts) of yogurt to be made at one time.. (I live alone and easily eat one to two quarts of yogurt a week.. it cut me out of my "ice cream addiction* haha as it satisfies my "cream crave"). My "thick yogurt method" takes prep time and the prep is the same whether I make an ounce or 3 quarts.. and it lasts easily 2-3 wks in the refrigerator.
* Although I would not rate it "superior" quality, it is decently made and has a 5yr warranty.. definitely above the norm.
* This makes inexpensive yogurt. (under $0.75 a quart for me) You can also use soy milk, goats' milk, etc to make your yogurts as well as add sweeteners and flavorings for variety. Check the internet for many variations. There are good sources.
* The small jars it comes with are handy if you're making a small amount or if you are doing it for children who all want different flavors.
* It's easy to clean (the small jars are glass.. the hardest items to clean). Rarely do you need to do much cleaning to the unit itself.
My method:
To make yogurt I simply put milk in a double boiler over slowly simmering water for about 30 minutes. I do this because I like THICK yogurt and the "fill and heat" method just doesn't make it thick like I like it. The yogurt I make is considerably stiffer than soft peak egg whites, though not so stiff as standing peaks.
After the heating (which loses about 10% of the volume by evaporation) I put hot tap water in my sink, and cool the pan to about 115 fairly quickly. Pour this into jars through a strainer to take out any scalded bits or solids from your mix.
I then pour some of this in a short glass and add a generous tablespoon of a previous batch for each quart of yogurt you're going to make (see note at end if you have no starter). Mix this starter bit until its smooth and divide among the jars you are going to use for the yogurt.
If you are going to add flavorings, this is the time to do it.
Put these jars in a warm place. It can be electric like this Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210 or just use a few jars of HOT FAUCET water as "heaters" in an insulated area. That's it. Yogurt cultures for some reason are VERY SENSITIVE to being stirred or shaken, so culture them where they won't be disturbed after you add the starter.
In about four hours you'll have yogurt that has firmed (leave it up to 12 hours if you like a sharper tasting yogurt.. added time doesn't make it thicker). Put the jars in the refrigerator until chilled. It will keep at least 2 weeks. It can be frozen indefinitely as well as making "yogurt ice cream".
Just as an added note, you can thicken the yogurt by adding about 1/4 cup powdered milk per quart to the milk before you heat it or by adding pectin or gelatin as a thickener. Thickeners likely will be required if you are using non-fat products.
If you like "greek style" or "yogurt cheese" simply take the yogurt you have made and pour it either into a fine cloth bag or a fine mesh strainer over a draining jar in the refrigerator for a day or so. You may also try the Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker. I haven't used it, but it should work. The liquid "whey" will drain off leaving a thicker, creamier product. I don't do this normally, but if done in my style it approaches the consistency of soft cream cheese.
*NOTE: If you don't have leftover yogurt for starter, I started my first batch with Dannon PLAIN (read on the side that it has active cultures and NO OTHER INGREDIENTS except milk on its contents) This can be frozen easily to provide "starter cubes" in an ice cube tray then bagged until you need it. For my tray each cube is about 1Tbs. Just remember to thaw them before adding to your yogurt batch. Also, though it is very expensive, there are "starter powders" available to provide the active cultures.
