I grow, literally, 50 or so different varieties of herbs of all sorts, from the common place to the exotic. Drying them was always a process, and I always seemed to lose them to mold, mildew, or those that I kept were brown and unattractive looking. Then, as a gift, my husband bought me this dehydrator because he was told it'd dry herbs.
This little gadget has turned into just about the most important gadget I have in my kitchen. It's practically in-use everyday from May to November, dehydrating everything from my precious herbs, to apples, tomatoes, jerky, and all manner of fruit and flower. This dehydrator has literally saved me hundreds of dollars, not only because I can make my own jerky, fruit roll-ups, and dried fruits for everything from trail mix to healthy snacks, but because vegetables from the garden that were left to rot because we couldn't otherwise keep them (and there wasn't enough to can) are now being saved, and every last one of my herbs, even some which didn't take to being dried the "traditional way," are easily preserved. I can even buy in-season fruits and veggies in bulk and dehydrate them, saving me even more money!
This gadget dries everything very quickly and efficiently, so everything really retains its color. I've found myself drying everything from rose petals to bee balm flowers (and all sorts of other flowers that couldn't previously be dried) for use in sachets, potpourri, and carpet deodorizers. My red and purple rose petals stay red and purple, and my herbs keep their emerald-green color, something I'd never keep with conventional drying. I'm really impressed that a dehydrator that is gentle enough to dry herbs is also rugged enough to make jerky and apple chips. Unlike other dehydrators I've seen, this particular one allows you to custom set the temperatures, ensuring that whatever you dry is dried at the temperature most conducive to effective and attractive drying. There's been more than once where I dry a batch of herbs, then after a quick scrubbing, my husband sets it up to dry jerky, which is just awesome. The little booklet full of recipes and drying times that accompanies this dehydrator ensures that even if you've never seen a dehydrator before, you can still use this one almost right out of the box.
Our dehydrator comes with a fruit-rollup attachment, which I'll admit we only have used once, but it appeared to work very well. I will also admit we saved a few dollars by buying some door screen from a hardware store, and cutting it to the size of our dehydrator racks, saving quite a bit of money on the "Clean-A-Screen" which is offered as an optional attachment. It's also nice that this dehydrator is quieter than your average stove fan or air conditioner, so it's not loud at all. If the TV is on, I can't even hear it. My only real complaint with this dehydrator is that it doesn't have an "on/off" switch, so to turn it on and off, you have to plug and unplug it. For people who don't have a lot of power outlets our outlets that are hard to reach, I'd imagine this is a hassle.
I have to say, this tool is a must-have for any cook or gardener. I know my culinary ambitions have always stretched beyond my wallet, but with this I can make my own "sun dried tomatoes" and keep my own exotic herbs, saving not only a chunk of change and using everything in my garden, but also really dressing up my meals for super cheap. My friends have wondered just how I do it. :D I dare say, this is almost more useful than my canner, since I can save a garden harvest of any size, and still make use of them in jams, jellies, sauces, and meals... This product is a must have!

Beggars can't be choosers, and that seems to be true for takoyaki in the US. The delightful Osaka treat is rare enough even at Japanese restaurants, and the necessary implements for making it at home are even more so.
The absolute best set up is a round takoyaki pan, either on a gas or electric portable grill. Much of the fun of takoyaki comes from everyone sitting around the table and cooking together, putting in your favorite ingredients and popping the little balls out then eating them hot and fresh. That is how it is done in Japan, and home-cooking takoyaki isn't meant to be the province of a lone cook standing over a stove while everyone waits patiently for the food. It is a communal experience.
However, true takoyaki cookers are not readily available, and this pan is better than nothing. It doesn't take much, just a pan with round indents in it heavy enough to rest on the range while the balls are flipped over using long toothpicks. It isn't really designed to work with electric ranges, as they are pretty rare in Japan, but it does the trick. I don't recommend using the included steel pick, as it will scratch your pan and conduct heat while doing the flipping.

We've been through every automatic feeder there is. No, not just the ones on Amazon -- we also went through 2 "Perfect Pet Feeders" -- yes the $450 polished chrome thing you see online. Both units shipped broken with different problems, I wouldn't recommend that feeder to anyone.
Nothing was working -- the cheapest feeder on Amazon was inconsistent and the first one shipped broken (wouldn't feed ever).
What I liked so much about this feeder when I finally saw it was the *lack* of frills and the use of an external (replacable) timer unit. While we all like glitzy/expensive machines to do our bidding (especially me), I was so fed up with ultra-fancy, computer-controlled machines that never worked that the utter simplicity of this device really got me intrigued.
NOTE: I was a bit turned off by the pictures of this, thinking there was going to be a lot of complexity with putting it together and wiring it up -- don't worry, it's not complex. The pictures just make it look like some sort of electronic science kit. It's just as easy to put together as anything else you've ever bought that needed minor assembly.
Anyway, we got the feeder, plugged it in, adjusted the size of the mouth (to match the food pellet size) and then the duration of the motor run-time (which determines how much food comes out with each feeding) and then on the dial-timer, set it to trigger the feeder every 3 hours.
That was 6 months ago... we've never messed with it since and just make sure it's filled with food every few weeks.
The cats are happy and go running every time it turns on, we're happy... everyone is happy.
Absolutely recommend you give this one a try.

I searched online for quite a while before finding this taiyaki-ki (taiyaki cooker). All the others I found were either in Japanese-only site or much too expensive. I stumbled across this one by accident, and a happy accident it was!
Taiyaki are tasty little fish-shaped cakes with red beans in the center. That doesn't sound that good, but Japanese red beans - anko, or adzuki - are sweet and quite suitable for snacks and desserts. Taiyaki are easy to make, which is good considering that the packaging and documentation for this cooker is all in Japanese.
Basically, you heat this over your stove. I tried using it on an electric burner, and believe it or not it works just fine that way. Heat the taiyaki-ki up on both sides until water sizzles on the cooking surface, then give it a light dash of cooking spray and spoon in a thin layer of batter, working from the tail to the body. (You can Google up a recipe, but I'm lazy and use pancake mix.) Add some red beans to the body area, then more batter to cover, and then close the mold. Cook for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Voila, tasty sweet fish-shaped snack cakes!
You can vary the recipe by using chocolate, shrimp paste, peanut butter, or whatever you like as fillings.

This thing slices well, then comes the impractical task of trying to clean it. The tray does not detatch from the base, which cannot be put in water because it containes the motor. Pieces of food work their way into the motor area. After removing the blade (using tools) you must remove a plastic cover with 3 screws and dig out the pieces of food. I could not believe how bad a design it was from a cleaning standpoint. The tray that slides back and forth with the food has a stainless top that is literally two-faced taped onto the plastic base. This was very poor from a quality standpoint, and came off in my hand the first and only time used. The plastic base for this tray has about fifty little half inch square honey-comb sort of areas that grease from meat or juices from food WILL get down into. This thing is a nightmare to adequately clean and not worth the trouble. It went back to the store immediately, and it was not all the way clean because after about thirty minutes I gave up. I'm looking for another brand now.

This is awesome! I got the S'mores Maker as a Christmas gift and have completely used up all 3 cans of chafing fuel that I got with the gift. I'm addicted!
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants to be able to eat S'mores at any time of the year! I used to make S'mores in the microwave, but the marshmallows always got chewy. This is the perfect solution.

It has a very cute set-up and although I don't really use the little containers for my marshmallows and graham crackers (except when taking fun photos), I do keep my wrapped chocolate bars in there all the time.
At first it took forever to roast my marshmallows until I read the directions (which I should have done in the first place) and saw that there's this neat feature that lets you adjust the flame height. The bigger the flame, the faster your marshmallow roasts. If the flame is too high, your marshmallow is quicker to burn.
As for someone's comment about Sterno not recommending that you cook open food over their flame... that's because certain foods can drip into the flame and cause dangerous flare-ups if you aren't careful. They specifically say that the emissions of the chafing fuel will not cause harm. :)
If you're having trouble finding the chafing fuel, check out the list of places in the FAQ on sterno.com. I'm pretty sure Amazon sells some, too!

Before purchasing this dehydrator I did some research as to which dehydrator to get. Was going to start off small with one of those "cheap" dehydrators, but decided to get this one instead. Reason being, that the Excalibur blows the air from the back of the unit going across the trays. While others just blow from the top. Number ONE problem I kept reading over and over again from comsumers is that those types of dehydrators dry the outside but the inside of whatever they were dehydrating wasn't completely dried. When it came to reading up on The Excalibur I looked at it as a investment. I rather pay a little extra for a better product, knowing that with the size of this one I only need buy one for now. With the other one I almost bought I would have had to buy 3 or 4 of them. Once I get my garden up and running I plan on purchasing yet another Excalibur Dehydrator. I been learning how to use this product on [...] from a awesome lady check out [...].... Watch her videos. I was already leaning towards buying the excalibur. Once I saw her videos she sold me on this product. I would recommend this product to anyone!

I was excited to use this product when I got it. The recipies worked well and were tasty. I would use the recipes again with another press or when making burgers by hand. I saved the recipe guide. The problem was that I also experienced a silver residue on the burgers after a few uses that made me concerned. I have also thrown it out because of concerns over this unknown residue that definately did not seem like anything healthy.

Finally, a product that lives up to all its hype and doesn't end up wasting precious kitchen space like the food processors, bread machines, etc. we have bought in the past but all too often turn out to be too much of a pain to clean and assemble. I've had mine for over a year now...we live in an apartment where kitchen space is at a premium. On hot days, if I turn on the oven or stove, it heats the whole kitchen and half our place up. To top it off, I'm a vegetarian -- hubby is not. The George Foreman Champ grill is terrific -- I buy those extra-lean premade frozen hamburger patties at Safeway, and even Jim (whose specialty is cereal with milk) can get motivated enough to plug the grill in, heat it up and toss a patty, or an Italian sausage, boneless chicken breast, etc. for a quick lunch, dinner or snack. Best of all, no splatter of grease like you would get using a skillet - the grease just runs off! Besides cooking for hubby, I have also used it to make super GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES, and Gardenburgers come out great. And that non-stick surface is great -- so easy to clean! I just can't say enough good things about the George Foreman Grill. I've recommended it to countless people and even bought several for presents (my sister and brother-in-law bought about 15 of them last Christmas for relative presents!). So buy it already! It's great!

This grill is definitely better (dollar for dollar) than the infamous George Foreman grill. My college roommates and I usually buy about fifty frozen hamburger patties from costco every month. Each frozen patty takes only 15 minutes to cook, making it perfect for a quick inbetween-class meal. You'd be suprise at how much grease is extracted from each meal!
Now, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to use this grill in a small room (ie. dorm) unless you don't mind your place smelling like a busy kitchen for a few hours.
The Extra Large Contact Grill is only large compared to the smaller foreman grills. It really will only hold about two steaks, 3 burgers (2 if they're big), 3 chicken breasts, and about 2 lrg pork chops. If you have a big family, I suggest you go up one model to the even bigger grill.
I really don't like washing cleaning. This grill is improved from the previous model, because the heat panels come off, and are dishwasher safe.
In conclusion: Great grill for smaller families. Awesome grill for college folks in an apt/house. Not so good for dormatories. Easy to clean.

This review is for the SousVide Supreme Demi. I've never seen or used the larger Supreme model, which is about 50% more expensive, for a slightly larger capacity. My understanding is that you probably get 1/3rd more space for the money. The only difference appears to be capacity, so this review may still be useful to read. See my warning at the end for what the machine won't do, but to be clear: you'll need to buy or already own a separate device that will allow you to vacuum seal food in plastic bags. This "oven" can't be used without that sealer and it's not included in this package, although certain warehouse stores have been known to sell a bundle that includes a sealer for not too much more money.
I will not claim to be an expert at SousVide cooking, but this seems to do exactly what you'd want. Briefly, what you'd want is a very precisely controlled water bath. The idea is that the food is put into a bag and vacuum-packed using a separate device, and then thrown into this "oven" to be brought to its perfect final eating temperature. Since there's no risk of over-cooking, food can be left in this state for relatively long periods of time: from hours to days. It is a great way of cooking steaks, fish, soft-boiled eggs/custards, and certain vegetables. It is not necessarily a faster way of cooking, nor does it seem optimized for the vast majority of baking applications. Note that you can't cook at two different temperatures without two different ovens, so you're probably either cooking meat/fish OR vegetables. Given the length of time it takes to cook foods, you probably wouldn't be doing both.
So, it's a device for holding water at a constant temperature for an indefinite period of time. Does this model do the trick? In a word, yes.
First, it is completely silent. There's not even a fan whirring gently in the background. There's not even the whine from the small LCD display. It's silent.
Second, it holds the temperature of the water plus or minus a degree or two (fahrenheit). You can set the temperature to display in celsius or fahrenheit. It relies entirely on convection to circulate the water (no blades or pumps to break) but that seems to work pretty well. Every time I reached into the water, it felt evenly hot throughout. Since one tends to cook things for long periods of time in one of these "ovens", I think convection works just fine. There is a timer that counts down time and then turns OFF the oven. Sadly, there is no count down timer to count down time and then turn the oven on.
Third, it comes up to temperature very quickly - from water out of the tap to cooking temperature in less than 15 minutes. Since you're cooking for long periods of time, you can probably ignore the warm-up and just throw your food in after you plug it in. The one cautiion here is that it takes a full three seconds of pressing the button before the power turns on. Three seconds does not sound like a long time, but it will stop the machine from being switched on or off by mistake. It sure feels like a long time when you plug it in for the first time.
Fourth, the capacity seems fine for anything up to a small family/6 people. If you're going to use it for entertaining or more than 6 people, you'll need the bigger model. I could fit six steaks into the oven. If you were really careful, and the pieces were small, you could probably fit 8. In terms of size, you can get the dimensions from the specs above, but it seemed like it would take a couple of small whole fish, or 6 inch-thick salmon steaks. Again, not great for big families.
Fifth, the lid and (optional) heat mat (which looks/feels like a mousepad) do a nice job of conserving heat in the unit. There's no steam and water at 130 degrees F, for medium-rare meat, just isn't that warm. I'm pretty happy reaching in and grabbing things without gloves or tongs. It's definitely warmer than a hot-tub, but no-one's going to get badly scalded. I'm not sure how high it will heat: up to 200 degrees F should be possible. I don't think it will boil water, but I've never tried. Certainly, that's not the point of this device, since the lid does not lock so it will never function as a pressure cooker. And if you wanted to boil food, you could do that in any pot.
Sixth, at the end, it's easy to take off the lid, pull out the tray, and use the two off-set handles to pick the whole thing up and empty out the water. You don't want this water sitting around for repeated runs - things will start to grow in it unless you add some salt or perhaps a copper penny or two. By the way, I'm sure that either of those approaches will invalidate the warranty.
Yes, this is basically a super accurate, very expensive crock-pot that's designed to be used with water and bags of meat instead of stew. Advantages: the meat will retain it's shape and consistency much better when cooked in the bag.
Ok, so what doesn't this product do?
Well, in order to cook food in this gizmo, you really have to buy a SEPARATE vacuum sealer and then a supply of bags. The sealer creates a vacuum inside special food-safe bags and then melts it closed. Note that the bags are not really re-usable and regular zip locks won't really do the trick, so you'll have to buy a supply of bags OR rolls of plastic that you can seal to create bags. The SousVide company makes a sealer (which I bought) that is not cheap, but that's because it has an important extra functionality: Some vacuum sealers will only seal the bag after a vacuum has formed completely. That will suck out any marinade/juices from the food. However, the SousVide sealer (and certain others, eg some FoodSaver models) allow you to seal the bag, independently of applying a vacuum. In this case, that means I can apply a vacuum until I see the marinade beginning to be sucked out, then hit the other button to seal the bag immediately. It works really quite well.
That's it. So why only four stars? Well, it's really expensive for what it is: a very nicely built waterbath. As an ex-scientist, I've used these in a laboratory setting and I couldn't find one cheaper ... but that's not really surprising since scientists get ripped off anyway. Basically, you're paying for being an early adopter. As these become more mainstream, I would expect the price to go down. Until then, c'est la vide (couldn't resist).

I know this is a silly looking gadget but I LOVE IT and you will, too!! I love to cook and entertain but I have always hated boiling and peeling eggs. I have tried everything to get the 'perfect' boiled egg...start them off in cold water with a little vinegar, boil 15 minutes, into the ice water, blah, blah, blah...still, even when they're boiled perfectly, half the time I can't get them peeled without tearing them up. However, my kids LOVE deviled eggs so when I saw the Egg Genie, I decided to give it a try. I can't believe how much I love it!! Not only are the eggs cooked exactly the way you want them every single time (whether soft, medium or hard boiled), they are also EASY TO PEEL!! I have never had a single one tear up. They just slide right out of the shell with absolutely no fuss. Now I don't mind making deviled eggs! I keep a half dozen boiled eggs in a baggie in the fridge and they're great to throw into salads or to grab for a low-carb snack. My sister has fallen in love with mine and wants one, too, so I came online to find one for her and decided to leave a review while I was on here. Two thumbs up from this girl!! :-)
