Froth Au Lait FALNS10 Elite Professional Milk Frother Review

I love cafe mochas. Unfortunately, the retail ones are either really bad (yes, I'm talking about you, Starbucks) or too far away (lucky you who either live in Maui for Java Jazz, or near any Tim Horton's). Moreover, you need foam. I can't use the frother on any espresso machine I have ever owned, and it adds excess water anyway. I have used the electric whips, and for a long time the Bodum frother. Not really satisfied with either.
Then I ran across the Froth Au Lait. I bought the cheap one first, and loved the foam, but it stopped working (the bottom beater stopped turning -- more on that later). I was not happy with how the return was going (they insisted I contact the manufacturer), so I took the machine apart to look at it myself, then fired off a not particularly flattering e-mail (I believe the phrase "piece of junk" was used at one point).
And the next day, received a call from the President of Froth Au Lait, stating my e-mail bothered her so much she googled me and tracked me down. Asked that I send my machine directly to her, promised she would get back to me, and said they would tell me what went wrong. In the meantime, I bought this model.
Not only did they call me back, but explained what the problem was (see below). In the meantime, I have been using this model, and it works great. Makes wonderful foam, I can mix in Hershey's and Splenda to make low calorie, sweet chocolate foam for the cafe mocha. The only downside to this model, as opposed to the less expensive ones, is that if you are only making one beverage, you will be wasting a lot of milk, but for me the stainless steel bottom makes that worth it.
The downside? You have to clean this after each use. Seriously. Clean it. Well. And don't use it wet. That's in the instructions, and if you don't it will burn the milk or not work.
As far as the beater not working, the beater assembly comes apart to clean, and if you don't snap it back together completely, the bottom beater will not turn. Oops.

KitchenAid New Professional 5.5 QT Commercial Style Wide Steel Bowl Stand Mixer 550 HD 575 Watt Motor- Empire Red Review

I purchased this KitchenAid after looking at mixers for quite awhile. I kept coming back to the KitchenAid, as it was the same mixer I'd seen in my mother's kitchen, as well as the kitchens of many people I know who are avid chefs.
Things I like about this:
1. It is very heavy duty. There is nothing cheap feeling about this mixer. The bowl fits solidly into the lifting arms, and even when mixing dough at high speed, the mixer barely moves at all.
2. It comes with the basic attachments you will use constantly. We've made many doughs and mixes, and the motor has handled everything we've thrown at it.
Things I don't like about this mixer:
1. When using the whisk attachment for trying to make some whipped cream, it didn't feel like it was going all the way down into the bowl, and after 5 minutes, it hadn't frothed up into whipped cream. Perhaps it failed as I was using half and half instead of heavy whipping cream, but my hand mixer has worked on this in the past. I see there is an adjustment screw, and maybe this will correct the problem
2. Doesn't include a mixing shield. When using a lot of flour or light ingredients, it would be nice to have some sort of quick-release shield.
3. Accessories are not cheap!
Overall, I'd say if you are on the fence--buy this mixer. If you don't think you'd use it--think again. We make great muffins, batters, doughs (really good pizza dough!).

KRUPS KM8105, 12-Cup Die-Cast Programmable Coffeemaker Review

Had I read these reviews before buying this coffee maker, I would have stayed away ..... far away. But it looked good in the store, so I went for it. The dripping carafe is the biggest problem. It's really bad. So I called Customer Support (1-800-526-5377) and I must say they were accommodating (must be getting a lot of calls on this one, or they're simply blowing me off!). They took my name and address and said they would ship a redesigned replacement carafe when they become available at the end of December (apparently the carafe's are in the process of being manufactured). I'll wait and see. I like the look and feel of the machine and the coffee is fine, it just makes a mess when you pour.
They did ask if I had the receipt and if I had the machine in front of me (yes on the receipt, no on the machine as I'm at work). However, they did not ask that I fax anything, unlike other reports I've read. So for now, I'll pour over the sink and hope they keep their word.
My one concern is in regards to a company that would actually manufacture and market a product that is obviously poorly designed to the point of being defective. Makes you wonder about the quality control for the rest of the unit. But if you own one of these, and can't or don't want to return it, call Customer Support, ask for a new and improved carafe, and keep your fingers crossed.
Update Dec 18, 2009:
True to their word, my new carafe arrived yesterday. Basically, they widened the spout and removed the baffle. Works perfectly. I'm pleased with the quick response, as I really want to like this machine. No other complaints, although the 2 stage timer advertised on the box would have been a nice addition, especially at this price. So I'm revising my rating from 1 star to 4. If you own one with the old style carafe, call customer service at the number above. The concern someone else mentioned about the removable tank eventually leaking is a possibility, I guess. Time will tell. In the meantime, I'm OK with it.

Not only a sleek-looking addition to any kitchen counter, this commercial-quality coffeemaker also brews up to 12 cups of great-tasting coffee. The appliance features a durable die-cast metal body with a powerful 1100-watt heating system for reaching optimal brewing temperatures between 195 to 205 degrees F--great for extracting all the flavor without the bitterness. The unit's front-loading coffee drawer opens with a pull of the soft-touch handle and closes with a magnetic safety lock, offering easy access to the removable brew basket inside. It also provides a removable water tank with an integrated folding handle for easy transport to the sink for filling. Best of all, its large LCD screen provides an oversized angled display with soft-touch buttons for simple programming. Set the appliance to automatically brew and wake-up to a fresh pot of coffee; its adjustable keep-warm mode allows for keeping coffee hot for one, two, or three hours before shutting off automatically. A 12-cup glass carafe comes included, complete with a stay-cool handle and drip-free pour spout. Other highlights include a water-filtration system for superior coffee flavor, an electronic descaling indicator, and an anti-drip system that prevents coffee from flowing with the drawer open during the brewing cycle. The coffee machine measures 8-1/2 by 8-3/4 by 13-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Saeco 21103 Royal Professional Fully Automatic Espresso Machine, Silver and Blue Review

Unlike the review below we've been lucky in that we've had no problems with our unit.
It's been exactly 3 years since we purchased our machine and we haven't looked back. The machine was bought as we were spending $40-50 a week at Starbucks. Now we use organic milk and beans and make our own latte's at home.
The machine is super easy to use. There are various settings for the grinding and dose of coffee. I just set the dose on max and change the grind depending on what beans I use. The machine gives you 3 sizes of coffee depending on what you want. The steam wand works well but can only be used after coffee dispensing is finished. It takes 15-25sec for the steam wand to really start.. steaming. The cappuchinore on my machine doesn't work but I only tried to use it after we had the machine for 2 years so I'm not bothered too much. I also have the direct water connection to my reverse osmosis system. So I haven't had to de-scale yet and might never need to.
Another useful item is the rinsing cycle where the machine runs hot water through itself for 10mins. At the end you get to see how much "dirt" was cleaned out. Quite satisfying :)
The machine also has some idiot proof features. One is when you put in pre-ground coffee but then press the coffee button instead of the pre-ground button first. The machine makes some funky noises but then dumps everything out. I'm not proud to say I've done this more than once....
Overall through it's the best $$$ I've ever spent and would highly recommend this machine. It might not be the cheapest (or most expensive!) but you get what you pay for!
p.s. the coffee is amazing!!!!!!!!!
